M.I.A. ‘Didn’t Care About’ New Album, Diplo Says

‘All she has is a bunch of yes men around her and they kinda suck,’ producer tells BlackBook magazine. By Gil Kaufman M.I.A. Photo: Jeff Kravitz/ FilmMagic The last time producer Diplo was quoted talking about M.I.A. ‘s ///Y/&#92 album, he got caught in an Internet sinkhole when he referred to the noisome disc as a “turd” in joking response to a question from a fan about what sounded like a toilet flushing on the song “Tell Me Why.” He shrugged off that controversy, saying that the many music blogs that quickly headlined his slam of his collaborator’s music were “trippin’.” Diplo has since made a number of controversial remarks about the album and how it represented a breach in the once-close musical relationship he had with M.I.A., implying that he felt a bit locked out this time around. But in a new interview with BlackBook magazine , Diplo pulls no punches, making it very clear that he is not onboard with the sound of the album. “She didn’t care about it. I was in the studio with her, she didn’t write anything,” he said of M.I.A. “Me and [collaborator] Switch tried our best to be quality control of the record and she didn’t want that. She kind of went on her own way … I was like, Look, nobody in your crew — we were the only people she could trust, and our asses were on the line too. We got here because of working with people like her. We care about the way things sound, and when the people that she works with don’t, then it’s f—ed up.” Of course, Diplo was not naming names, and he noted that “she’s got talent in every aspect,” praising M.I.A.’s big ideas and ability to make things happen, but he lamented that the singer may have fallen into the usual trap of surrounding herself with sycophants. “All she has is a bunch of yes men around her and they kinda suck,” he said. “I burned like 20 bridges with her. I build my own bridges, it doesn’t matter. I’m honest. As soon as she comes to terms with what she does then we can work again. One of us has to be like, We f—ed up, and then we can do it again.” Last month, Diplo told MTV UK that M.I.A. “didn’t want to put any of my records on it like last time. She will do anything to discredit me.” And in the BlackBook interview, he added that he was a bit shocked at some of the backlash M.I.A. has gotten over the album. “I am surprised by it,” he said. “She like, retired because she married a dude and she didn’t care about music. She only did it again because ‘Paper Planes’ did blow up in the end. It gave her a second wind, but she didn’t have any hunger anymore. She already got a full table … but besides that I think she’s amazing and she’ll put another record out that’s going to be f—in’ sick because I think she needs to get grounded at some point.” For her part, the outspoken singer seems to have taken the high road and has not shot back at Diplo so far, recently telling MTV News that she’s very proud of the “3-D” sound of the album, saying she likes the aggressive, rattling drill bit effects on tracks like “Steppin’ Up.” Spokespeople for Diplo and M.I.A. could not be reached for comment at press time. Pink’s Acrobatic Stage Show: An Inside Look

MTV got a special view of the artist’s dangerous stunts before she performed at the 2009 VMAs. By Eric Ditzian Pink performs at the 2009 VMAs Photo: Kevin Mazur/WireImage Anyone who has seen one of Pink’s acrobatic stage shows — in which she flies upside-down through the air while managing to sing beautifully — knows that the talented 30-year-old puts herself at risk nightly. MTV News got an inside-look at what it takes to put together such a perilous act when Pink performed at the Video Music Awards last September. And after a harness reportedly malfunctioned and Pink fell onto a steel barricade during a show in Germany on Thursday, we immediately thought back to what we learned from seeing her VMA rehearsals and talking with a show insider. “There’s a lot of danger,” VMA creative director Lee Lodge told us last year. “You may see it, and you may think it’s amazing, but what people don’t understand is how technically difficult it is to do that — and do it while singing live.” During last year’s Funhouse Tour and this year’s Funhouse Summer Carnival Tour, the singer has been executing high-flying move after high-flying move, everything from trapeze flips to whirling rope spins. It’s eye-popping stuff, and something only a professional would be able to pull off. “She’s trained as a gymnast,” Lodge explained. “She does so much aerial work in all of her concerts. Pink is an amazing performer who probably doesn’t get enough credit as she should — vocally and as a songwriter, but also in terms of what she can do onstage.” Her stage show is so impressive that it ended up setting the tone for the rest of the VMA performances, from Lady Gaga’s to Jay-Z’s. “Our executive producer, Jesse Ignjatovic, flew to London to see the concert, and as soon as he saw the concert, Pink was the very first act booked on the show,” Lodge said. “And because it was the first act booked for the show, it raised the bar for the rest of the performances, in terms of they all had to have a sense of spectacle or scale or theater or drama. The whole direction of the show was started a long time ago when Jesse saw Pink’s show.” When an artist is flying 60 to 80 feet above a stage, there is always a concern about safety, but Lodge emphasized that Pink’s crew was experienced and safety-conscious. “For us, you have to check the safety of the performance,” Lodge said. “It’s dangerous, but for Pink, the fact that she does it every night and has been doing it for a couple of months, made everyone feel safe.” Have you seen Pink perform her stunts live? Michael Cera Recalls Hanging With ‘Jersey Shore’ Cast

‘We got drunk … and danced and got in a hot tub and ate pizza,’ ‘Scott Pilgrim vs. the World’ star says. By Jocelyn Vena Michael Cera in the hot tub after his “Jersey Shore” makeover Photo: MTV News While he’s made a splash in a string of lovable, if nerdy, roles, Michael Cera took on a new part of sorts earlier this year when he allowed the cast of the “Jersey Shore” to give him a very special, personalized makeover. Now, in a new interview with Playboy, the “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” star recounts the time he spent with Snooki, the Situation and rest of the crew. “Actually, it was one of the most pleasant days I’ve had in a long time,” Cera says in the magazine’s August issue . “We got drunk and laughed and danced and got in a hot tub and ate pizza. It was sort of like my 8th birthday party.” While he has no plans to resurrect his “guido” look anytime soon, next up, Cera will star in August 13’s “Scott Pilgrim,” and he addresses critics who say his onscreen work tends to appeal, a bit too much maybe, those living in nerd-land. “I would say this movie is both a nerd and a non-nerd’s dream come true. For the nerds, there are lots of Nintendo references and sound effects, and the non-nerds will enjoy making fun of all the nerds in the theater exploding with joy, and afterward, will possibly beat them all up.” When talk turned to his “Scott Pilgrim” co-star Anna Kendrick, Cera readily responds to the question of how he stacks up against Kendrick’s “Up in the Air” leading man, George Clooney. ” ‘Natural transition’ is not the phrase I would use. ‘Handsome transition’ seems to be a better phrase to encapsulate what that lucky girl has experienced,” Cera joked. “Unfortunately, Anna and I got to work together for only one day,” he continued. “Though she plays my sister in the movie, one of our biggest scenes together takes place over the phone, and we shot our respective sides of the conversation at completely different times on the shooting schedule. She regrets that we weren’t able to spend more time together,” he added. “We got close enough for me to feel comfortable in assuming that.” Do you think Michael Cera should revive his “Jersey Shore” look? Pink Says She Will Perform Friday After Onstage Injury In Germany

‘I will be on that stage, even if I have to crawl,’ singer tweets after falling into stage barrier Thursday night. By Jocelyn Vena Pink (file) Photo: Andy Sheppard/Redferns Pink had a bit of a scare during one of her high-flying stunts at a show in Nuremberg, Germany, on Thursday, when she fell into a stage barrier and was immediately rushed to the hospital. According to her Twitter updates from the hospital, however, she didn’t break anything and was “just seriously sore.” “Okay. Full steam ahead, people,” she tweeted on Friday morning (July 16), apparently determined to perform the same day in Salem, Germany. “No pain, no gain. Or is it no brain, no pain? Either way, I will be on that stage, even if I have to crawl:)” During the opening bars of her hit “So What,” a video posted online shows dancers helping Pink into her harness. “Shall we do it?” she asks the crowd. “I can’t hear y’all! Are y’all ready?” Then, she shouts “No! No!” as the wires pull her off the stage and she falls into the crowd. The music stops, as Pink says from beyond the camera’s view, “Oh, f—, that hurt like a mother—-er. Sorry.” Although the crowd’s cheers die down considerably, some fans can still be heard screaming for the pop star while her crew and dancers work to figure out what is wrong with the singer. Eventually, after some moments pass, Pink is able to get up and make her way back on the stage where she still seems visibly in pain. At press time, a rep for the singer had not returned MTV News’ request for comment regarding her current condition or the status of Friday’s show. But Pink’s husband, Carey Hart, wrote on Twitter that she has already been released from the hospital and seemed confident that she would be ready for the concert. “She [will] better feel better soon, she has a show tomorrow!” he tweeted . “No, sriously, she is good. Just super banged up. One tough girl.” As for Pink, she is keeping in good spirits about the injury. After Hart wrote about her encounter with the barrier, she made light of the situation, writing, “Nooo! I WON!! RT @hartluck: Fyi@pink out of the hospital+ all good. Just got the shit kicked out of her by the barrier. Steel barrier-1 Pink-0.” Leave your well-wishes for Pink in the comments! Related Artists P!nk

Jimmy Buffett Changes Tune on Oil Spill, No Longer Blames Bush

Last week, singer Jimmy Buffett took a swipe at former President George W. Bush, saying that the Republican administration was responsible for the oil spill off the Gulf Coast. “To me it was more about eight years of bad policy before [President Obama] got there that let this happen,” Buffett told the Associated Press. “It was Dracula running the blood bank in terms of oil and leases.” But Buffett appeared to change his mind at his concert in Gulf Shores, Alabama on Sunday, and laid the blame for the spill solely on BP. The musician revamped the lyrics of his famous “Margaritaville” song to: “Some people claim that there’s a woman to blame; but I know it’s all BP’s fault.”  We think this revision is a bit more on-target.

Taylor Momsen on Miley Cyrus Comparisons: Shut the Eff Up!

Miley Cyrus may be a colossal disappointment for a variety of reasons, but at least she doesn’t curse, smoke or look like a raccoon at all times. The same can’t be said for Gossip Girl cast member Taylor Momsen. Speaking to FHM UK , the 16-year old lashed out at critics that compare her to Miley this week, making it very clear that she doesn’t see any similarities between the pair. “I’m not looking to be Miley f*cking Cyrus,” Momsen said. “I don’t care about the fame. I do it because I love music. I like making records and if people like them, then we’ll go along for the ride.” Momsen and Cyrus may both act and sing, but that’s pretty much where the comparisons end. The former fronts rock band The Pretty Reckless, while the latter is nothing more than a Britney Spears wannabe at this point. Still, Taylor feels a need to distance herself from Miley, adding: “I think the Disney bubblegum shit that the world is living right now is pathetic. I thought we passed that repression.” It’s unclear what that actually means, but Gossip Girl fans have made their opinion of Momsen and her character well-known: Jenny Humphrey has been written out of most of next season on the show. Good riddance.

5 Reasons to See the American Idol Tour This Year

There’s a good chance American Idol ‘s finale didn’t thrill you this year. You may have tuned out early in the season when plenty of decent talents were voted out of the Idol megadome, or you may have balked at Lee DeWyze, one of the show’s pitchiest dawgs, who became a judges’ favorite and ended up winning the competition. Still, that shouldn’t stop you from seeing the Idol tour live this summer, even if the announcement of eight canceled tour dates seems to reaffirm your apathy. There are five solid reasons to see this concert, and I’m not just saying so because I’ve already bought my ticket. Spoilers ahead.

Eminem? Drake? Fans Name Their Best Albums Of The Year (So Far)

Fans also rep for Christina Aguilera, Jonelle Monae. By James Montgomery Drake Photo: Tim Mosenfelder/ Getty Images Last week we had reached the midway point of 2010, and I wrote my annual “Best Albums of the Year (So Far)” list . And, much like every other year, there were a whole lot of people who had different opinions. It seems that no matter how many albums I choose to highlight (23 this time around), there are always some that I miss … and more often than not, at least one of those albums is by Eminem. Last year, I left Relapse off of my list , and, boy, did the Em fans let me know about it. This year, his Recovery disc failed to make the cut, and once again, the fans were out in full force, voicing their displeasure and calling me all sorts of nasty things. While we could live without the catcalls, we want to know your picks for the best albums of the year so far, and lots of people have written in with theirs (Drake, B.o.B., Christina Aguilera). Oh, and a few folks out there actually agreed with my list, so, hey, let’s hear from them, too — and let us know what your picks are! “What about Eminem’s Recovery? SEVEN of his songs are on the Top 100 Billboard list,” reader Keith wrote. “And also, what about Drake’s Thank Me Later? The numbers show clearly for these guys.” Reader Ian had similar feelings — “Where is B.o.B’s album The Adventures of Bobby Ray? That was incredible.” — as did ConcertConfessions.com — “Dude, you forgot Deftones’ Diamond Eyes. Oh, and I am trying, but just not feeling the new Against Me! Some songs I love, some songs I want to smack them for.” — and Stomp17 (“Where is Gorillaz’ Plastic Beach? That album should at least be number 10 or 9 on the Best of 2010 list [note: It made the list as an ‘Honorable Mention’].” Several people had a lot to say about their picks. MclintM sounded off about Christina Aguilera’s Bionic : “I don’t understand all the backlash and unnecessary criticism with [ Bionic ]. If you give it repeat listens — the whole 24 tracks as it was meant to be … can’t stand label’s deluxe editions now — and have heard previous efforts it all makes sense in her trajectory. Really plays with her voice and is some of the most downright club-worthy stuff she’s ever laid down.” Others drilled down into my picks, singling out Janelle Monae in particular. “Great article!,” reader Mike wrote. “Kudos on a lot of your choices. A couple comments: 1) I think you should check out Foxy Shazam. Their self-titled album came out in April and it is fantastic. They have an incredible amount of energy and talent. 2) I think Robyn deserves higher on the list. Even at eight tracks, the album is really great. She really has a knack for writing great quality pop songs. 3) Others that I think you should consider for your list are Sia’s We Are Born and Motion City Soundtrack’s My Dinosaur Life. I also think Janelle Monae should be #1 on your list. Her album is fantastic and innovative. I really think she is the future of music.” “I heard Janelle Monae’s CD and I must say, pure epic,” Cwilson10 wrote. “I was hearing all kinds of stuff, I thought I was tripping for a second. To tell you the truth I didn’t know her CD was going to be that much fun. It felt like I was in a movie theater when the CD was over and Janelle was my date. I’m not lying, she puts everything into a story!!” And, of course, a few readers shared their disappointment in certain releases. “Sorry, but the new LCD Soundsystem is the biggest disappointment of the year,” Theboogieman631 wrote. “Time to get off Mr. Murphy’s n–s.” And Yoprince sounded off about several albums: “Glad to hear I’m not the only The Hold Steady fan who was a bit disappointed, which is to say a lot disappointed since they’re like my favorite American band. Damn Craig for thinking it was time to start harmonizing. I still haven’t been able to get all the way through that Gorillaz record. Janelle Monae, Yeasayer, Sleigh Bells FTW! And yes, I like the Drake record, which seems to be an unpopular opinion outside of teenagers and some very defensive blog writers. No Eminem? Fine with me. Too many tracks and Em fans won’t admit it but some of those punchlines were more miss than hit.” So what are your favorite albums of the year so far? Sound off in the comments below! Local CBS Staff Join Hollywood Celebs in ‘The Dream Lives On’ Boston Pops Tribute to Kennedys

Less than an hour before CBS’s Craig Ferguson-hosted 10 PM EDT “ Boston Pops Fourth of July Fireworks Spectacular” national broadcast on Sunday night, local anchors Jack Williams and Lisa Hughes from Boston’s CBS-owned television station , along with a couple of local actors, took to the stage to narrate the music-accompanied “The Dream Lives On: A Portrait of the Kennedy Brothers.” ( Video: downloadable from NB twenty second wmv clip of Williams and Hughes in action.) Introducing the 20-minute production carried by WBZ-TV channel 4 in Boston in its 8-10 PM EDT coverage, Pops conductor Keith Lockhart ludicrously insisted it was “not political” — even though it takes its name from Ted Kennedy’s very political 2008 Democratic convention speech aimed at motivating Democrats to push for left-wing policies, starting with nationalized health care, and culminates by quoting the call to arms in that address: “If we set our compass true, we will reach our destination. The work begins anew, the hope rises again and the dream lives on!” That line was read by actor Morgan Freeman Jr. in the original May 18 production at Boston’s Symphony Hall ( mov video excerpt ) and coinciding with the concert at Boston’s Hatch Shell along the Charles River, the Pops trumpeted : On July 4, the Boston Pops will release a CD featuring the live recording of the world premiere performances of “The Dream Lives On: A Portrait of the Kennedy Brothers,” which took place at Symphony Hall May 18 & 19 with guest narrators Robert DeNiro, Morgan Freeman, Ed Harris, and Cherry Jones… In liner notes for the CD (PDF) , composer Peter Boyer expressed a “deep admiration for the Kennedys” and related: [I]t was not until I began to research his life for this project that I became more fully aware of the remarkable scope of his legislative achievements , over more than four decades. For me, the most inspiring aspects of the Kennedy brothers’ legacy are a commitment to idealism, and a sense of enduring optimism for our nation and for mankind. Thus the title of the work, The Dream Lives On, is taken from one of Ted Kennedy’s last public speeches, at the Democratic National Convention in 2008. My May 16 NewsBusters post, “ Leading Actors Lend Their Voices to Boston Pops’ Tribute to the Kennedy Brothers, ” described: A production which “combines quotes from speeches by the Kennedy brothers with original text and video, accompanied by a dramatic orchestral and choral score” so it “pays tribute to the towering achievements and singular spirit epitomized by the Kennedy brothers – the call to public service, drive for social change, and the legacy of optimism for America’s future.”… A promotional video features “Tony Award-winning lyricist Lynn Ahrens” relating the lyrics she created for the concert: Now on the rain-slicked streets of Boston and across the wind-swept Cape Code sea, over the din of Washington’s halls and down the halls of history, their passionate words can still be heard, their highest ideals a clarion call; these three American brothers inspiring the best in us all. More celebrity performances are to come: Actor Alec Baldwin will take the lead for a July 18 performance at Tanglewood and actor Chris Cooper will narrate a Hyannis Village Green event on August 1.

Happy Birthday, Ashley Tisdale!

She probably won’t celebrate in the same way as fellow birthday girl Lindsay Lohan, but Ashley Tisdale turns 25 years old today. One of our favorite young stars, The Tis got her big break when she landed the role of Sharpay Evans in High School Musical . She anchored all three of those successful big screen hits alongside Vanessa Hudgens and Zac Efron. Never one to seek out attention via any of the typical antics of stars her age, Tisdale is in a serious relationship with Scott Speer. She seems like a very nice person, unless you ask Trace Cyrus for his point of view . In the fall, Ashley will star in a new CW series titled Hellcats . We wish her the best of luck with it and encourage readers to send in birthday wishes now!
