Lady Gaga Fans Show Their Love, Get Engaged At Monster Ball Kickoff

Montreal’s little monsters say Gaga’s speaking moments are as important as her over-the-top musical performances. By James Montgomery Lady Gaga performs in Montreal on Monday Photo: Matt Harper/ MTV News MONTREAL — They wore leather and lace, stiletto heels, studded jackets, crowns and Diet Coke-can curlers . Two of them even got engaged. Yes, Lady Gaga’s little monsters were out in full force on Monday night at the Bell Centre, for the kickoff of the latest North American leg of her Monster Ball Tour . And in a show of dedication that’s practically unparalleled in pop music today, they got there early, waited in lines that stretched all the way down the Avenue Des Canadiens-de-Montreal and around the Rue de la Montagne (trust us, that’s far), braved brutal winds and some genuinely ominous thunderclaps … all in the name of Gaga. And after the show was over — after two-plus hours, not to mention all the time they had spent waiting just to get inside the Bell Centre, was it all worth it? “Absolutely. It was the most emotional night of my life,” said Melissa Sassone, wearing a pair of signature Gaga shades. “When she was speaking to the crowd, she touched us all. We know her, we feel her, we know what she’s been through, we’ve all been through it. So when she’s speaking to the crowd, we all feel it. It was beautiful, inspirational. My life began tonight.” “I love her, and she does everything that I want to do. My favorite moment was ‘Alejandro,’ ” Gaga fan Michael Perry added. “The costume changes were great. The whole show was so great. It was like the ‘The Wizard of Oz,’ Judy Garland all over again. It was the best thing I’ve ever been to.” And while some monsters loved the fashion, the attitude and the songs (set-closer “Bad Romance” was a particular fave), most said the best parts of Gaga’s performance were the moments when she simply spoke to the crowd. “She was just so beautiful … and she said things that were so touching. She said it doesn’t matter who you are, just be yourself,” Catherine Dupressoir said. “She makes me feel free. I feel like I could do anything I want to.” “It made me cry the whole time,” Dupressoir’s friend, Olivia Bellemara added. “She’s so inspirational. She’s my idol. If I could meet her, I would cry in her arms.” Of course, for others — like 11-year-old Gabriella Bagnoli, who got tickets to the concert as a conformation gift from her godmother (who also accompanied her to the show) — the reasons for loving Gaga’s performance were a bit simpler. “Yeah, it was amazing. Lady Gaga was so extraordinary. I like when she the turns and dances,” Bagnoli beamed. “I like her fashion styles and the way she sings. She has a good voice and attitude, too. She inspires me.” Bagnoli’s 7-year-old sister, Olivia, liked “the big ball” Gaga donned for “Bad Romance.” And speaking of romance, it was alive and well at the Bell Centre, thanks mostly to David Hopps, who raised the bar for Gaga fans everywhere when he proposed to his girlfriend, Jenny Smith, during the show. “I had no idea!” Smith said afterward, showing off her brand-new engagement ring. “I was really obsessed with her, and he had no choice but to be obsessed with her too. He bought me these tickets as a pre-birthday present, and then he proposed to me during ‘Love Game.’ ” “I was pretty nervous,” Hopps laughed. “I really, honestly thought she’d say no, because she’s way too pretty for me.” Do you plan on seeing Lady Gaga during this leg of the Monster Ball Tour? Jeremy London Thought He Was ‘Going To Die’ During Alleged Kidnapping

‘Party of Five’ actor insists abduction happened, but others have cast doubt on his story. By Gil Kaufman Jeremy London Photo: Charley Gallay/WireImage Reacting to reports that have cast doubt on his tale of an abduction during which he was allegedly forced to smoke drugs and drink, former “Party of Five” star Jeremy London made his first statements about the incident on Tuesday, telling RadarOnline , “I thought I was going to die.” London, 37, a recovering addict, said the alleged incident in Palm Springs, California, a week and a half ago really rattled him. “It’s been an absolute nightmare,” London said in the interview, which appeared to be shot on a camera phone in a car and during which his voice was shaky. “First of all, I want to say [the incident] actually did happen. It was one of the worst days of my life. I thought I was going to die. Thank God I made it out alive.” The actor said his alleged captors put a gun to his head and threatened his family, adding, “We’re working closely with the Palm Springs Police Department to get the rest of the guys. There’s one guy in custody. There’s two more out there.” The one confirmed suspect, Brandon Adams, 26, has been charged with kidnapping, robbery, possession of stolen property, vehicle theft and carjacking. According to Radar, in a statement released on Monday, Adams’ lawyer said the pair had “partied together” on the evening of the alleged abduction. “I’m confident that a jury will find that the allegations are just not true,” said attorney Gregory Geist. People magazine reported that London has been involved in a nasty custody battle with his ex-wife, Melissa, over their 3-year-old son, Lyrik. But it appeared the two had reconciled, since reports have emerged that Melissa, who has also allegedly struggled with drugs, was with London earlier on the night of the alleged kidnapping. The former child actor lashed out at his mother, his twin brother Jason and his brother’s girlfriend in the interview, claiming they were spreading “outrageous lies” about the incident. London added that he hasn’t spoken to his family in six months, has sent legal threats to them to stop talking to the press and is seeking a restraining order against them. According to Radar , one of the most damning pieces of evidence casting doubt on the kidnapping allegation are reports that Melissa was dropped off at home by the alleged abductors when she decided she wanted to leave. London was trying to change a tire when three men stopped to help him on June 10, after which he offered to drive them home and they allegedly held him at gunpoint and drove him around for five hours, reportedly forcing him to smoke crack cocaine and amphetamines and then purchase alcohol and hand it out in a gang-infested area of Palm Springs. London is adamant that the incident occurred, saying in the Radar interview that the kidnappers told him, “Hit this! Hit this or I’m gonna kill you!” as they held a gun to his head and threatened to go after his son. “I had a gun put to my head,” he said. “I had my family threatened.” Melissa London backed up her husband’s story, saying that the tony Palm Springs area has been hit by a crime wave lately. “Police told us this is the new thing to do down here,” she said. “Rob people at gunpoint and make them do drugs so they won’t be reliable witnesses. It’s happening more and more.” When asked if police have any doubts about London’s version of events, Palm Springs Police spokeswoman Melissa Desmarais told the site, “No, not at this point. Our investigators had enough information to arrest a suspect and the investigation is ongoing.” Asked about Melissa London’s claims that kidnapping and forced drug-taking incidents are on the rise in the Palm Springs area, a Palm Springs Watch Commander Sergeant said, “We have not had a rash of them — they are not commonplace here.” Speaking to People on Monday, Jason London said, “I’m glad my brother’s okay, but I have serious questions about what transpired. His health is our number one concern.” Related Videos Brand New ‘Eclipse’ Sneak Peeks MTV Rough Cut: Kristen Stewart

The Roots Are At ‘Crossroads’ On How I Got Over, Says ?uestlove

‘You really don’t hear any hip-hoppers dare use the word ‘midlife crisis,’ the drummer tells MTV News. By Mawuse Ziegbe, with reporting by Steven Roberts ?uestlove Photo: MTV News The Roots’ long hip-hop career is rivaled by only a few acts. With the release of their 11th studio album, How I Got Over, however, the Philly collective shows it can still push boundaries, exploring some fairly un-hip-hop themes. “The whole premise of How I Got Over is basically … a coming-of-age record,” ?uestlove told MTV News last week of their latest effort, which came out Tuesday (June 22). The Roots drummer added that the band wanted to switch things up and touch on some thought-provoking themes, a practice he said is more typical of rock than hip-hop. “There hasn’t been a real precedent of anyone being at the crossroads [in hip-hop]. I hear [it] a lot in rock records … where it’s sort of like, ‘I’m at a point in my life where I don’t know what to do and things are happening around me.’ ” The Grammy-winning group known for keeping a tireless touring schedule has more recently eased up on the concert dates, putting down roots as the house band for NBC’s “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon.” The band has no doubt arrived at an enviable level of success for an act that dropped its first effort back in ’93. Still, ?uest explained that the group wanted to get candid on How I Got Over about the issues confronting them at this stage in the game. “You really don’t hear any hip-hoppers talking about some sort of … existential existence of God or even dare use the word ‘midlife crisis’ in any of their verses. So we wanted to make a completely honest record.” But How I Got Over isn’t all existential musings, ?uestlove insisted. The drummer points to tracks like the upbeat “The Fire,” which features soul singer John Legend, who also happens to be working on a collaborative album with the legendary Roots crew. “As far as ‘The Fire’ is concerned, we wanted to balance the record out also, with a sign of hope, a ray of hope,” ?uest said. ” ‘The Fire’ is … almost an anthem, if you will. It’s like a hang-on-in-there, if you will, for us.” Are you glad to hear the Roots will touch on some more complex subjects on their next album? Tell us in the comments!

Conan O’Brien Jams With Jack White At Small Show In Nashville

Comedian covers Radiohead, White Stripes during intimate concert. By Gil Kaufman Conan O’Brien (file) Photo: Michael Buckner/ Getty Images He’s jammed with Spoon and Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder during his “Legally Prohibited From Being Funny on Television Tour.” On Thursday night, Conan O’Brien lived the ultimate rock ‘n roll fantasy when he traded licks with the White Stripes’ Jack White in front of 300 fans during an intimate show at White’s Third Man Records outlet in Nashville. “Those lucky couple hundred people who waited in line all day today and got into Third Man Records tonight got a treat: AN AMAZING ROCK AND ROLL SHOW,” read the post on O’Brien’s blog describing the evening, which was titled “Epic.” The post continued: “Conan blazed through a rocking setlist of stuff from our ‘Legally Prohibited’ show — as well as a few other jams that we’ve never done! The energy in the room was incredible: The band lit by a dim red light, the hot Nashville air thick with excitement; the room packed to capacity — it was a scene the likes of which I’ve never experienced. I could totally see this show being something that happened outside under a tent in the South in the ’50s. A very, very cool vibe.” According to reports, O’Brien, sporting his off-the-air beard and an all-black ensemble and wielding a light blue Fender electric guitar, told the crowd, “I’ve had a crazy six months… Six months ago, I was the host of ‘The Tonight Show,’ the greatest franchise in the history of television. Then I started a live tour, going from small theater to small theater. And tonight I’m pressing a vinyl recording. I’m going back in time! Next week I’ll be on vaudeville. Then I’ll be a steamship captain.” The whole show was recorded on reel-to-reel tape and will soon be released as a vinyl album. Among the songs O’Brien played: Willie Nelson’s “On the Road Again”; the Band’s “The Weight”; the White Stripes’ classic “Seven Nation Army”; Elvis Presley’s “Blue Moon”; the Stray Cats’ “Rock This Town”; and Radiohead’s “Creep.” The set ended with White trading licks with O’Brien on Eddie Cochran’s early rock classic “20 Flight Rock.” The whole thing was so old-school that at one point during the set, the band had to take a breather so a technician could change the reel-to-reel tapes. According to the Associated Press , O’Brien played it mostly straight, but he did add comedic touches to some songs. He deployed an exaggerated British accent on “Creep,” saying, “This is the only way I can sing Thom Yorke songs, as a 19th-century chimney sweep with a top hat and a smudge on my cheek.” No sooner had he joked about the old-timey vibe than White walked out on stage with a top hat, which O’Brien rocked during the run through the British band’s breakthrough hit. O’Brien also rewrote the lyrics to Nelson’s “On the Road Again,” singing, “My old show again/I just can’t wait to get my old show again… Off the road again, dear God please get me off the road again.” He closed out the concert by thanking TBS for giving him a new talk show, which debuts in the fall. More than 1,000 people had lined up around the block on a scorching-hot Nashville day in order to secure one of the 300 audience spots in the small performance space at White’s downtown complex, with some securing their places in line 24 hours before the show. White tossed bottles of water to those in line from the roof of Third Man during the day and O’Brien was clearly moved at the end of the night, telling the sweat-soaked crowd, “This means everything to me. This was so cool.” O’Brien will do it all over again this weekend, when he performs at the Bonnaroo festival. Rick Ross, T.I., Drake Rep The Dirty South At ‘VH1 Hip Hop Honors’

Timbaland, Lil Jon, Paul Wall and others also performed at the event, which airs Monday on VH1. By Jayson Rodriguez Rick Ross Photo: Getty Images NEW YORK — “VH1 Hip Hop Honors: The Dirty South” might have represented Atlanta, Texas, Miami, New Orleans and everywhere in between, but all points were a unified front for the event Thursday night (June 3) at the Hammerstein Ballroom. “I always say the East Coast is one piece of bread, and the West Coast is another piece of bread,” honoree J. Prince of Rap-a-Lot Records said during the tribute. “And the South is the meat. I describe it that way, ’cause everyone has roots in the South.” Drake, Bun B, the Game, Juvenile and the Geto Boys’ Willie D all performed as a part of the Rap-a-Lot set. Drake paid homage to the late Pimp C as he and Bun joined forces for “Get Throwed.” “Office” actor Craig Robinson replaced Tracy Morgan as host of the festivities, and with the help of Lil Jon and Paul Wall, he received a Southern makeover. “You got to put your money where your mouth is,” Jon told the host, as Paul Wall “DDS” presented Robinson with grillz. Jon and Wall scored plenty of laughs throughout the night via a series of sketches. In one, the pair attempted to dole out directions to a bystander, but the combination of slang (“slabs” and “shawty”) left him confused. Paul Wall also put in time onstage as he, Chamillionaire and Slim Thug were part of the Texas tribute. The Lone Star State, Miami and Atlanta were all recognized, in addition to official honorees Master P, Timbaland, Jermaine Dupri, J. Prince, Luther Campbell and 2 Live Crew, and Outkast producers Organized Noize. JD’s set rivaled the Rap-a-Lot tribute for the highlight of the evening. The producer brought out Dem Franchize Boyz, Diddy and Bow Wow, who brought fans to their feet when he rose from the audience with his clothes on backward, in honor of Kris Kross. ” ‘Cause inside-out is wiggity wiggity wack,” he rapped. Uncle Luke suffered through technical difficulties during the 2 Live Crew set. Mannie Fresh helped keep things moving throughout the delay, shouting out Tony Draper and his pioneering company Suave House Records. Master P’s tribute went through without a hitch. His son Romeo, brother Silkk the Shocker, Trina and Mystikal hit the stage to pay homage. Mystikal was a frenetic force of energy, as he and Romeo performed P’s breakout hit “Make ‘Em Say Ugh.” Gucci Mane, T.I., Bone Crusher, DJ Drama and the Ying Yang twins honored Atlanta, while Trick Daddy, Pitbull, Flo Rida, and Trina repped for Miami. Rick Ross and DJ Khaled proved to be showstoppers as the pair put on mink coats for the Boss’ latest single, “Super High.” Producer Timbaland and Organized Noize brought out a bevy of guest to celebrate their discography, from Fabolous and Keri Hilson to Nelly and Asher Roth. “VH1 Hip Hop Honors: The Dirty South” airs Monday at 9 p.m. on VH1. Justin Bieber Fans Wait Overnight For ‘Today’ Show Performance

‘For Justin Bieber, I’ll do anything,’ one fan tells MTV News. By Nuzhat Naoreen Photo: MTV News & Docs On Thursday afternoon (June 3), Penny Noelle, 10, started standing in line for Justin Bieber’s “Today” show concert on Friday morning. She arrived in New York from Springfield, Massachusetts, equipped with her bag, posters, money, a chair to sleep on overnight and a very patient mom. “For Justin Bieber, I’ll do anything,” Penny told MTV News. She’s not the only one. By Thursday evening, hundreds of fans, including some as young as 5, had already lined the streets outside Rockefeller Plaza in anticipation of the free Bieber concert. Megan Hazelwood, 17, who said she attended one of Justin’s first concerts, convinced her parents to travel 17 hours from Kansas City, Kansas, so she could see him once again. “I’ve never driven 17 hours for anyone but Justin Bieber,” she said. By the time Megan arrived Thursday evening, though, the line already spanned a couple of blocks. Most fans passed the time Thursday night making posters for the concert, singing Bieber’s songs and playing games. Many families also got nearby hotels and took shifts standing in line throughout the night. Joe Pezzino, who drove his daughter seven hours from Buffalo, New York, waited in line alone as his daughter joined some family friends at a nearby hotel for dinner. “I’m keeping busy,” he said. “I’m really caught up on my BlackBerry. I have no e-mails.” Which artist would you wait overnight to see? Tell us in the comments! Related Artists Justin Bieber

Michael Jackson Museum Plans Announced In Gary, Indiana

Jackson estate denies involvement in $300 million privately funded complex. By Gil Kaufman Michael Jackson Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage The city of Gary, Indiana, the birthplace of Michael Jackson , is moving ahead with plans to build a $300 million museum dedicated to its favorite son. The entertainment complex is slated to include a hotel, housing, golf course, performing arts center and an elevated rail line to shuttle visitors, according to the Gary Post-Tribune. Mayor Rudy Clay said the massive, privately funded Jackson Family Center will be built without using tax dollars from Gary residents and is expected to attract 750,000 visitors a year to the gritty industrial Midwestern city that has struggled through decades of hard times. “This is not a promise,” said Clay, who stood beside Jackson family patriarch Joseph Jackson at Wednesday’s press event announcing the plans after years of failed attempts to honor Jackson in Gary. “This is going to be done.” A possible hiccup in those definitive plans emerged just hours later, when a reporter from the paper called one of the attorneys representing the executors for the Jackson estate, who said that the estate is planning its own “world-class museum” at a yet-undetermined site. Lawyer Howard Weitzman noted that Jackson’s image and name can’t be used without the estate’s permission. “The estate of Michael Jackson was never consulted about, nor is it involved in, the Jackson Family museum being proposed in Gary, Indiana,” Weitzman said in a written statement. “Michael Jackson’s music, name, likeness, memorabilia and other intellectual property are assets exclusively owned by the estate for the benefit of his children, his mother during her lifetime and charities as specified in his will. These properties cannot be exploited legally without written authorization from the estate. … The estate is considering a world-class museum that would include memorabilia, music and other intellectual properties at a site yet to be determined. The estate has no connection to this project.” A lawyer for the city said the announcement was the “first step” in getting the project off the ground, noting that the Jackson family has a direct line of contact with the estate and that Jackson himself made a commitment in 2003 to building a performing arts center in Gary. Clay said the city’s Public Works department approved a land transfer to the Jackson Development & Marketing Corp. shortly before Wednesday’s event, noting that the plan has the endorsement of Joe Jackson and the singer’s mother, Katherine. The artist’s rendering of the proposed complex includes the Jackson Family Museum and Cultural Center, Michael Jackson Performing Arts Center and Concert Hall and the Michael Jackson Memorial Pavilion. It is expected to take three to five years to complete the project, with private funding supplied by the Jackson Family Foundation and groundbreaking expected in early 2011. Miley Cyrus Hates on Glee

In a recent interview with Billboard , Miley Cyrus made it clear she loves her own music . But the singer also opened up about something she hates, in a rambling, nonsensical way. Asked about the Fox smash Glee , Miley said: “Honestly, musicals? I just can’t. What if this was real life and I was just walking down the street on Rodeo Drive and all of a sudden I just burst into song about how much I love shoes?” She then paused, laughed and patted herself on the back, saying: “It would get you hits on YouTube.” Ah, classic Miley: not giving credit to another musical sensation, and also pointing out just how popular she is with that YouTube comment. Someone should probably tells Cyrus that maybe she “can’t” handle musicals, but over 13 million people can. They tune in to Glee each week. So, is there any musician out there Miley does respect? Lady Gaga, she says. “Unlike a lot of artists, all her music does mean something personally.” Do you wanna tell Miley that Gaga recently said it was a dream come true to have her songs covered by Glee ? Or should we relay that message instead?

Miley Cyrus Can’t Let Nick Jonas Go

Let’s hope Liam Hemsworth did not attend his girlfriend’s concert in Portugal on Saturday night. He would not have been pleased to hear the song “Full Circle.” Prior to performing this single for fans in Lisbon, Miley told the crowd: “It’s about two people. They’re always gonna come back together no matter what anyone says or the bad people that try to keep you apart. Surprise surprise, it’s about a Jonas brother.” Ouch . Sorry, Liam. Nick and Miley have a romantic history together, one whose future got a bit brighter after the former broke up with Selena Gomez in April. The chorus of “Full Circle” reads: “I try to run, but I keep on coming back full circle and I can’t jump the track, can’t let you go.” That’s a pretty clear message to Nick, isn’t it? It’s also incredibly profound, as Miley likes to tell everyone her music is, more than any other pop star in the business. WATCH THE PERFORMANCE BELOW AND LISTEN TO MILEY TALK ABOUT HER EX.
