Toby Gad and Pixie Lott are contributing to album, coming this summer. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Christina Garibaldi Selena Gomez Photo: MTV News This summer, Selena Gomez will release her new album, which will feature the lead single “Who Says.” And, in the short time since she released her previous album, A Year Without Rain , in September, she’s managed to live a bit of life. When MTV News caught up with her, Gomez said those experiences will end up on the record. “The third record is really fun, and there’s a song called ‘Hit the Lights’ that I love, and it’s basically about every missed opportunity that you’ve had,” she said. “But it’s also a dance track. There’s a lot more depth [on this album].” Gomez took on a bigger role this time around as a writer. “I am writing, very excited,” she said, teasing that her life experiences will serve as inspiration for the lyrics. “There’s one song that I co-wrote with Toby Gad: It’s kind of like a compliment song slash dig,” she explained. “It’s really fun. It’s basically saying, ‘I had a few people who weren’t treating me right, but now I have wonderful people.’ So it’s like I’m thanking my friends while saying goodbye to the other people. It’s very therapeutic.” In addition to working with the “If I Were a Boy” hitmaker, Gomez also worked with a British pop starlet. “There is one [song] that I’m completely in love with, and it was written by Pixie Lott, who I am obsessed with,” she said. “And it’s my mom’s favorite song. It’s very sweet. It’s kind of a ballad, but not really. It’s basically about living in the moment; it’s about enjoying right now. I’m very much enjoying right now. I’m in a good place.” Are you looking forward to Selena Gomez’s new album? Tell us below! Related Videos MTV News Extended Play: Selena Gomez Related Artists Selena Gomez
RPattz will debut an exclusive ‘Water for Elephants’ clip and answer fan questions live tonight at 8:56 p.m. ET on MTV.com. By MTV News staff Robert Pattinson at the “Eclipse” premiere in 2010 Photo: Todd Williamson/WireImage Our weeklong celebration of all things Robert Pattinson has almost reached its glorious, OME-laden conclusion with the debut of “MTV First: Robert Pattinson,” our 30-minute conversation with the “Twilight” star. But before the show goes live at 8:56 p.m. ET, we’ve got one more favorite RPattz moment to present — our favorite one of all. Previously, we’ve celebrated our first interview with him and Kristen Stewart , the duo’s onstage smooch at the MTV Movie Awards , Rob’s first appearance at the Oscars and his love for “Twilight”-branded personal lubrication . So what happened to nab our #1 favorite RPattz moment? Oh, just the time he uncorked a few filthy words during a live MTV News interview. It all went down last June at the “Eclipse” premiere during our red-carpet live stream. The crowd outside the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles was squealing like mad, and we wanted to know if one rumor could possibly be true: Was Pattinson really looking forward to the moment the “Twilight” franchise would be behind him? “That was such bullsh–. I am so pissed off!” he said. But Rob, man, we’re live! “Oh sh–!” he cried. That’s not making it better. Oh well, those are the perils and pleasures of reporting live. And as it turned out, after Pattinson declared that he’d been misquoted about being ready to leave “Twilight” behind, he went on to give us a very thoughtful answer about the prospect of life after the vampire franchise. “Anyone who says they’re tired of this is completely crazy. If I ever said that, someone should just remind me of what I was doing before: just sitting around doing nothing,” he said, adding, “I love doing the movies. I like all the people. I’ve had a great time on all of them. The cast is great. It’s just weird. It’s become so much a part of my life. It’s like divorcing someone. I guess I’ll see. Maybe it’ll be great. I have no idea.” Don’t miss “MTV First: Robert Pattinson” tonight at 8:56 p.m. ET on MTV and MTV.com. RPattz will debut exclusive ‘Water for Elephants’ clip and answer fan questions live Friday at 8:56 p.m. ET on MTV.com. By Eric Ditzian Robert Pattinson Photo: MTV News What else can we say about Robert Pattinson’s #2 MTV moment other than “glitter lube”? All week, we’ve been ticking off our favorite RPattz moments as we count down the hours until “MTV First: Robert Pattinson,” a 30-minute conversation in which the 24-year-old actor will be answering your Twitter questions, goes live Friday at 8:56 p.m. ET. We’ve touched on our initial visit to talk to him on set in 2008 and his first trip to the Oscars the next year. Momentous occasions, all. And now, here we are: glitter lube. Allow us to explain: As “Twilight” shape-shifted from a wildly popular book series into a global box-office juggernaut, the franchise has branched out into all sorts of ancillary gear: clothing and jewelry lines, board games, bed sets, Halloween costumes, makeup, posters, dolls, lunch boxes and, well, the list goes on. And on. As in: Pillows? Really?! So when we caught up with Pattinson in the spring of 2010, while he was promoting “Eclipse,” we wanted to know if there was a piece of merchandise that truly perplexed and entertained him. “I like the glitter lube stuff. I thought that was really funny,” he said, laughing. “I was just like, ‘I did not sign that! Where is the paper?’ I think, yeah, I’m pretty sure it’s glitter — I think it’s lube.” Ever the goofball, Rob didn’t leave it there. “I’ve got a dispenser,” he joked. “I just have it on my hands. ‘Yeah, it’s nice to meet you!’ and it’s like, ‘Wow! It works!’ ” Don’t miss “MTV First: Robert Pattinson” this Friday at 8:56 p.m. ET on MTV and MTV.com. RPattz will debut an exclusive ‘Water for Elephants’ clip and answer fan questions live Friday at 8:56 p.m. ET on MTV.com. By Eric Ditzian Robert Pattinson at the 2009 Academy Awards Photo: Jeff Vespa/WireImage If you ask us, Robert Pattinson officially arrived in Hollywood when “Twilight” won five Golden Popcorn statues at the 2009 MTV Movie Awards — including RPattz’s nods for Best Kiss, Best Fight and Breakthrough Male Performance. But others might argue his Tinseltown coming-out party occurred a few months earlier. In late February ’09, after a weeklong series of rumors had whipped the Twi-nation into a frenzy, Pattinson walked onto an Academy Awards red carpet for the first time. He was not there because he was nominated, but simply because the Academy could not ignore the vampire phenomenon that had ignited the box office — and too many tween hearts to count — the previous fall. It was the biggest night in Hollywood, after all, and its biggest new star just had to be there. Not that he could quite wrap his head around the idea. “It’s insane,” Pattinson exclaimed when we caught up with him on the carpet. “When they first told me about this, I was like, ‘No, no, no, no, no, you’re joking’ — or ‘I’m going to have to do something really stupid like get gunged!’ ” Assuming he’d need to get doused with slime to justify an Oscars appearance, for that reason alone, this awards-season moment deserves to make our countdown of favorite Pattinson moments before the debut of “MTV First: Robert Pattinson” at 8:56 p.m. ET on Friday. But RPattz’s self-deprecating humor aside, it was at the Oscars that his status as the rising young actor in town was solidified. During the ceremony, he took the stage alongside Amanda Seyfried to present a montage of the year’s romantic films, everything from “Mamma Mia!” to “Revolutionary Road” to, yes, “Twilight.” Yet even though footage from the film that made him a star played at the Oscars, he couldn’t quite believe the situation. “I’m so surprised that it worked out the way it did,” he told us of becoming a crush-worthy Hollywood presence. “I was thinking the whole time, ‘I don’t really have the personality to fit into that.’ I’m not really afraid of it. I don’t even know how to play up that. I don’t know if I could ever be cast in a heartthrob role, apart from ‘Twilight,’ which I didn’t know was a heartthrob role.” Don’t miss “MTV First: Robert Pattinson” this Friday at 8:56 p.m. ET on MTV and MTV.com. Singer was released from hospital after receiving blood transfusions for ulcerative colitis. By Gil Kaufman “American Idol” Finalist Casey Abrams (file) Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Casey Abrams is back in the game. The “American Idol” front-runner, who missed out on Thursday’s results show because he was hospitalized for a flare-up of ulcerative colitis, posted a message to fans on Monday announcing that he is feeling better and will be ready to go for Wednesday night’s performance show. According to Entertainment Weekly, Abrams made the statements at an “Idol” panel on Monday at the 28th annual PaleyFest, where he took the stage along with eight of his fellow finalists (minors Lauren Alaina, Scotty McCreery and Thia Megia were doing schoolwork). “I’m feeling really good,” he said. The 20-year-old Illinois singer reportedly received blood transfusions last week, during his second hospitalization of the season. “I thought I was actually going to make it,” he said about last Thursday’s show, “but I had to stay behind. It was fun and everyone waved at me, and I felt really supported by everyone, and I loved watching.” Abrams also said he “hated” seeing Ashthon Jones go home on Thursday and was bummed to miss out on the first group performance of the finals. “It was awesome seeing the group performance … [and] thank you, Stefano [Langone] and Haley [Reinhart], for taking my part.” Earlier this season, on February 23, Abrams was rushed to the ER after complaining about stomach pains and almost missed the subsequent taping of the top-12 men’s performances, which potentially would have eliminated him from the competition before the finals. ‘Auto-Tune is absolutely a no-no in this show,’ Ray Chew tells MTV News of manipulating the voices of ‘Idol’ hopefuls. By Kara Warner “American Idol” top 13 Photo: FOX Coming into the shiny new season of “American Idol,” the show’s producers made it clear to the viewing masses that season 10 would be a revamped version of the ratings juggernaut. But along with the competition show’s many changes plenty has remained the same, in particular, the show’s stance on all-live singing, all the time. When MTV News caught up with new “Idol” music director Ray Chew recently, we asked him to address those Auto-Tune rumblings that seem to creep into critical discussions and/or Internet message boards each season, and whether it’s even possible to incorporate the device on the show. “No Auto-Tune,” Chew told us. “This is a [singing] contest, so that is absolutely a no-no. Plus the show, it’s happening live, so Auto-Tune would be a process that you’d either have to use globally or selectively with parts,” he explained. “All the vocals that you hear are live, there is no kind of manipulation of anything and auto-tune is absolutely a no-no in this show.” Another point of contention — also mentioned in previous seasons — is the judges, contestants and studio audience experience the sound during live tapings of “American Idol,” versus the version that TV audiences hear at home. (Former judge Simon Cowell, for example, used to make comments that the version he heard in the studio was different from the one he watched on his TV.) Chew assured us that the “Idol” team goes to “great lengths” to ensure the sound quality is the best it can be. “I know that they’ve been aware of comments like that,” Chew revealed. “And we’ve gone to great lengths to improve the audio production and the sonic quality of what happens coming out of the final TV mix,” he said. Before signing on to “Idol,” Chew worked as the musical director for a myriad of live-music performance events, including the BET Awards, the Inaugural Ball, as well as performances by artists like Jennifer Hudson, Rihanna, Prince and Aretha Franklin. ‘I’m Into You’ will be next single off Love? album, which still has no release date. By Gil Kaufman Lil Wayne Photo: Kevin Winter/Getty Images Steven Tyler isn’t the only “American Idol” judge trying to make the most of a double dose of weekly prime-time exposure on TV’s biggest reality show. While Aerosmith’s back catalog has gotten a boost thanks to its prominent placement on “Idol,” fellow judge Jennifer Lopez has parlayed her spot on the program into the highest-charting single of her career with “On the Floor.” And over the weekend, she revealed that she’s got a strong follow-up single ready to go. Speaking with fans during an online chat , on Saturday, Lopez said she’s finished a song called “I’m Into You” with Lil Wayne that will be the next single from her still unscheduled Love? album. “My next single I believe will be a song called ‘I’m Into You’ and it’s going to feature Lil Wayne, so look out for that,” she said. Asked to name her favorite rapper, Lopez said it used to be Nas, but that these days she’s really feeling Weezy, whom she called a “very unique” and “fresh” voice. “Plus he’s on my single!” And though J.Lo did not have a specific release date to announce for the album, she said it would “probably” come out in late May, once two or three singles have hit radio. That would be perfect timing, of course, since “Idol” wraps in mid-May. Lopez, who has toured sporadically during her music career, also said that she planned to launch a world tour in support of Love? . Over the course of the two years she worked on the new album, Lopez said she also recorded Spanish-language versions of some of the songs, and plans to release a full-length Spanish album next. Asked what the hardest part of being a judge on “Idol” this season has been so far, Lopez said, “I didn’t expect that it would be such an emotional roller coaster for me.” She also admitted that saying goodbye to the departing contestants has been very difficult for her.
