Josiah Leming Returns, Reinvigorated, With Come On Kid

‘I know I’ve still got a lot to prove, but I’m ready,’ the ‘American Idol’ castoff says of his debut, due September 14. By James Montgomery Josiah Leming on the cover of his album Come On Kid Photo: Warner Bros. Josiah Leming knows you’ve probably forgotten about him. After all, there was a time not that long ago when he had forgotten about himself too. “Absolutely, people have forgotten me, and rightfully so. I haven’t given them too much to think about,” he laughed. “I basically disappeared for a while. I had let the momentum drop. I hadn’t been writing. I was stubborn, and I was not prepared to fully dedicate myself to this. I had completely lost touch. And then, three little words popped into my head.” Those words were “Come On Kid,” a mantra he kept repeating to himself as he fought to rediscover the spark that had made him a standout on “American Idol” back in 2008 (despite not even making the top 24 ) and earned him an unheard-of contract with Warner Bros. Records soon after. Eventually, the phrase drove him to ditch his two-bedroom apartment in Los Angeles, disconnect from all the distractions — both external and internal — that had kept him from finishing his Warner full-length, and, as he puts it, “re-center himself.” And for all of those reasons, there was really nothing else Leming could call his debut, which will finally see the light of day September 14. It’s an album that showcases not only his skills as a singer/songwriter (which were pretty apparent early on ), but his newfound sense of maturity too. And that, really, was the key all along. “A lot of people that get off ‘Idol’ and jump into a contract don’t think there’s any more development to be done, since there’s a fanbase now. And I was definitely like that,” he said. “I was a little cocky, I wanted it all right away, and [Warner] realized they needed to develop me. They told me that I needed to keep writing, that I needed to be ready mentally, and that there was really no choice but to wait until I was ready. “But I kept writing songs that I liked, and the label liked them, too, but they just didn’t feel like there was a single for radio, so they didn’t want to put an album out,” he continued. “And I was getting more and more frustrated, because, really, I wasn’t ready to do the work. Like I’ve always done, I wanted to run. When I was young, I ran away from home. After ‘Idol’ didn’t work out, I ran from that. And I wanted to run from this. But, luckily, I didn’t.” Leming said he had an awakening last summer, after his mother died following a lengthy battle with cancer . He realized he had no other options, that making music was his dream, and he was about to blow a tremendous opportunity. Inspired, he parted ways with his previous management team, got back to writing and told the label that he was finally ready to work. “I just realized that I was meant to do this, there was no other plan,” he said. “So I sat down and figured out how I was going to make this work.” And the end result is, finally, Come On Kid. While its release should be triumph enough, the newly invigorated Leming is hitting the road hard to promote it, playing new songs and still aiming for the stars, despite the fact that most folks have forgotten his name. His new mission, he said, is to change that. “I like being the man down, and I know I’ve still got a lot to prove, but I’m ready,” he said. “The dream is still there, and I’ve still got the same lofty and unrealistic goals. Why wouldn’t I? I’m a 21-year-old kid.” Are you rooting for Josiah Leming to make it big? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Josiah Leming

Rick Ross Video Director Spiff TV Branches Out

Ross has been ‘getting me a lot of gigs,’ Spiff tells Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid Spiff and Rick Ross Photo: Spiff TV Fire Starter: Spiff TV Carlos Suarez has an ear for the streets and an eye for the Internet. Better known to everyone on the hip-hop blogs as Rick Ross’ directorial go-to guy, Spiff TV, the 26-year-old has made a name for himself with his vivid visuals for artists such as the Bawse and Waka Flocka Flame. What the world might not know yet: It was Spiff’s keen audio scouting that unearthed the beats for two of Ricky Rozay’s hottest records right now. ” ‘MC Hammer,’ I did two verses,” Ross explained to us a couple of weeks ago. “One night, we was riding around the city, and Spiff played me the beat. I just start writing to it, and Spiff took his BlackBerry and started writing down the rhymes. I actually wrote the two verses and the chorus riding around in the whip.” “I’m a director/A&R,” said Spiff, who also manages producer Lex Luger (Ross’ “MC Hammer” and “Blowin’ Money Fast [B.M.F.]” and Waka’s “Hard in the Paint”). “If you check that Albert Anastasia album , it’s ‘A&R by Spiff TV.’ I got him [the beat for] ‘B.M.F.,’ and I got him ‘MC Hammer.’ I actually gave him ‘MC Hammer’ when we left the ‘Super High’ video shoot . Like 2 in the morning. I had the laptop opened up, playing the beat. He just started freestyling. I said, ‘Hold up.’ I whipped the BlackBerry out and started writing down everything he was saying. The next week, he calls me like, ‘Spiff, e-mail me.’ Sent him the lyrics. Hit! Same thing with ‘B.M.F.’ ” Spiff is directing the upcoming videos from Albert Anastasia for “MC Hammer” and “Sweet Life” with John Legend. A couple of weeks ago, he helmed a teaser for “B.M.F.” Spiff directed all the freestyle videos Ross has done the past couple of years, as well as videos from Deeper Than Rap, such as “Mafia Music” and “Valley of Death.” The Orlando native has caught the attention of other MCs as well; he directed Waka Flocka’s “O Let’s Do It” remix video as well. “I’m from Orlando,” Spiff began to tell of how he hooked up with the leader of the Carol City Cartel. “I used to work as A&R for DJ Nasty. Nasty Beat Makers from Orlando. That’s [DJ] Khaled’s people and brother. So [Ross] put me on a couple of years ago. We just been building. Right now, we working. A lot of stuff going on. Ross manages me as a video director. He’s been doing a lot for me as far as networking, getting me a lot of gigs.” Spiff’s biggest goal right now is to start directing films. He says getting the opportunity to shadow director F. Gary Gray on the set of the “Super High” video was an invaluable experience. “I got to watch him shoot a video. It was amazing. He shoots videos like they’re movies. He’s picking two movies coming up. He doesn’t know which one. But either one he picks, I’m flying to where it is, and I’m going to be his water boy that day and watch everything he does.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines or follow the Mixtape Daily team on Twitter: @shaheemreid and @mongosladenyc .

Gloucester sign Scotland second-row Jim Hamilton

• Lock opts for Gloucester over Stade Français • Coach Bryan Redpath says he is ‘exceptionally pleased’ Gloucester’s Caledonian connection strengthened today when they won the race to sign the giant Scottish lock Jim Hamilton. The 27-year-old had appeared bound for Stade Français but performed a neat U-turn to come back to the Guinness Premiership club closest to his roots. Hamilton, key to Scotland’s win in Argentina last Saturday, was born in Swindon and moved to Edinburgh via Leicester where he played alongside Brett Deacon – another Gloucester signing this summer. With Dave Attwood, one of England’s few successes so far in Australia and Alex Brown, an England A international, also on the books at Kingsholm, Gloucester are acquiring a stable of class locks. In Hamilton and Attwood they will also have a couple of the “enforcers” that have been missing in recent seasons when Gloucester have trodden the Heineken Cup stage. “I’m exceptionally pleased to have signed Jim,” said Gloucester’s head coach, Bryan Redpath, adding with considerable understatement: “He’s a huge physical presence.” In fact Hamilton stands 6ft 8in, currently weighs in at close on 20st and has been a more than adequate replacement for another big man, Nathan Hines, for Scotland in Argentina. Alongside the captain, Alastair Kellock, Hamilton dominated the lineout last Saturday creating the possession Dan Parks turned into penalty goals. Hamilton still had 12 months of a three-year contract remaining at Edinburgh, but was keen to leave and the club was not prepared to stand in his way. He was a product of the Leicester Academy, making his debut for the first XV in 2003. He was capped by England at Under-21 level but opted to play for the land of his Glasgow-born father, becoming the 1,000th man to be capped by Scotland when he made his debut in November 2006. “Any player of Jim’s calibre is going to attract a number of offers, but the fact that he’s chosen to move to Kingsholm after coming down to look around and meet us is a great endorsement of the direction that Gloucester are heading in,” said Redpath, whose Scottish stable already includes another four currently on tour in Argentina – Rory Lawson, Alasdair Strokosch, Alasdair Dickinson and Scott Lawson. Taylor Lautner Found Shirtless ‘Eclipse’ Scenes Awkward

‘It is a little awkward for me to watch myself,’ actor says, despite ‘Eclipse’ being his favorite ‘Twilight Saga’ installment. By Terri Schwartz, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Taylor Lautner Photo: MTV News Fans have a lot of reasons to look forward to “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn” . There’s the tent scene, the leg hitch, the final battle scene and — of course — plenty of shots of Taylor Lautner’s abs. At a Los Angeles screening of the film, MTV News’ Josh Horowitz witnessed spontaneous cheering at Lautner’s first appearance on the big screen, in which he lacked (you guessed it) a shirt. Lautner has never been hesitant about saying that “Eclipse” is his favorite of the four novels in “The Twilight Saga,” and with a fan response like that, it’s not hard to see why. However, Lautner is quick to reassure that his objectification isn’t the reason he loves “Eclipse” the most. “It is a little awkward for me to watch myself, and actually, when we’re filming those scenes,” Lautner said. “But [‘Eclipse’] is my favorite one because it’s the most guy-friendly by far. It’s dangerous, there’s a lot of action. The romance is still there, but the action level is stepped up way more. It’s great. It’s definitely my favorite though.” Apparently filming the majority of “Eclipse” without his shirt on was easier than doing the same during “New Moon,” because “Eclipse” was filmed during the summer. However, despite the fact that Lautner has the rest of his wolf pack posse for shirtless solidarity, he admitted that it wasn’t any easier this time around being the one whose body the ladies were crushing on in “Eclipse.” “It’s a little different when I’m the only person on-set with his shirt off,” he admitted. Could Drake’s Thank Me Later Sell A Million In Its First Week?

Experts are skeptical of Drake joining Lil Wayne, Eminem in exclusive hip-hop club. By Jayson Rodriguez Drake Photo: Walik Goshorn It’s a benchmark in hip-hop that only two MCs have ever realized: selling 1 million album units during an opening release week. Eminem achieved the feat — with his second and third albums, The Marshall Mathers LP and The Eminem Show, respectively — and in 2008, Lil Wayne joined the exclusive club as he pushed seven-digits worth of his sixth set, Tha Carter III, an act that cemented his ascent to super-stardom. Kanye West came close with his third collection, Graduation, but stalled just short of the platinum plateau. And 50 Cent is the only debuting rapper who ever came anywhere near the mark when he pushed more than 800,000 copies of Get Rich or Die Tryin’. Now, on the verge of releasing his major label debut, Thank Me Later , many are wondering whether Drake — last year’s mixtape wunderkind — can deliver on all of the hype to become only the third rapper to break the one-million mark in first week sales. “I always said that his setup was so impeccable, so crazy, that I just thought he would get really close to 1 million,” Vibe magazine editor-in-chief Jermaine Hall told MTV News. “The one thing he needed was that big record and I don’t think he was able to get his ‘Lollipop’ out the gate,” he said referring to Wayne’s breakout Carter III single. “But still, I think the setup is incredible and I expect him to sell 500,000 to 600,000 the first week.” While “Find Your Love” is a favorite among Drake’s fans, the Kanye West-produced single has yet to crack the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The melodic track followed Drake’s first official single from Thank Me Later, the brooding “Over,” an unconventional ode to the paranoia fame can bring; not an especially traditional pair of singles for an upstart rapper. Also, Thank Me Later, while highly anticipated, is just the latest offering from Drake, who has released a string of records post- So Far Gone, from “Fear” to Forever.” Add to that the fact that his album leaked online well ahead of its June 15 release date. “Obviously, it’s 2010, it’s not 2003 anymore and the industry has changed a lot and I think everyone has sort of had to trim their expectations because of that,” Entertainment Weekly ‘s Simon Vozick-Levinson said. “That’s not something that reflects on Drake personally, it’s just that it’s hard to sell records. To look at some more recent examples of people who have sold more than 500,000 [in a week], Sade did that, Eminem, last year, did about 600,000. These are artists who were gone for a while that had big fan bases waiting for an album to come out. Drake is at a different place in his career.” The EW scribe also said he believed Drake would not cross the one-million mark, instead predicting sales of 300,000 to 400,000 copies of his debut. XXL ‘s Bonsu Thompson shared the same sentiments, predicting 400,000-plus sales; he noted Drake’s achievements and emphasized the rapper’s long-term potential, even as he drew the line below gold certification and well below platinum. “I don’t think Drake will do a million his first week,” Thompson said. “First, you have to compare it to the rapper who did achieve that, that was Lil Wayne. You have to look at all the elements that contributed to him selling 1 million in the first week. I don’t think [Drake] has that smash single. The girls like ‘Find Your Love’ and the guys dig ‘Over,’ but it’s not like that smash crossover, where everyone is in a state of panic and we have to have this album right now.” Much like box office tallies, first-week sales in music make for splashy headlines, yet ultimately a blockbuster’s health is measured not by the opening haul but by how strong the project fends off sharp dips and maintains a steady stream of revenue. A true star’s worth may lie in his ability to avoid the dreaded second-week dive. That’s the theory the New York Times ‘ Jon Caramanica subscribes to, noting Drake’s own goal may not be realized via those first-week sales. Instead, he noted Drake’s ambitious plans, outlining how the rapper’s sales down the road may be a better indicator of the impact of his debut. “I think the real question for Drake is what are his fifth-week numbers, what are his 10th-week numbers, what are his 20th-week numbers, if he still pops in July, in August, in September, then that’s a win,” Caramanica told MTV News. “Then it doesn’t matter if he sells a million the first week. But if he’s gonna last, that’s the thing, that’s a Kanye, that’s a Wayne, that’s a Jay. And I think ultimately, that’s the guy he wants to be considered as. I don’t think anyone should get bent out of shape. They should get bent out of shape if he only sells two [copies].” Do you think Drake will sell a million copies of his debut in the first week?
