Stanley Kubrick’s First Film Set for Blu-Ray/DVD; Jennifer Lawrence Eyes The Ends of the Earth: Biz Break

Also in Monday afternoon’s round-up of news briefs, Toronto ’12 doc heads for U.S. distribution, while an Occupy Wall Street doc is also set for theaters. Julia Louis-Dreyfun, James Gandolfini, Catherine Keener and more begin work on a new comedy, while Bruce Dern and Will Forte are set for Alexander Payne project. And Joe Manganiello has boarded an action-thriller. Jennifer Lawrence Eyes The Ends of the Earth The Weinstein Company will produce and distribute the project. It picked up worldwide rights from Escape Artists, which will produce the film. Lawrence is in talks to star in the epic love story, based on true events as Lydie Marland. In the film Ernest Marland, an oil tycoon, risks losing everything after an affair with his adopted daughter, Lydie. The screenplay was written by Chris Terrio (ARGO). The director has yet to be chosen. Commented Harvey Weinstein: “I’m not sure that anything resonates more with an audience than a true story. Jennifer Lawrence shows the skill of a seasoned veteran in everything she does, and we’re thrilled to work with her again.” Stanley Kubrick’s First Feature Fear and Desire Set for Blu-Ray and DVD Release The 1953 release is an existential war film that is often compared with Kubrick’s Paths of Glory (1957) follows a squad of soldiers who have crash-landed behind enemy lines and must work their way down river to rejoin their unit. In the process, they encounter a peasant girl (Virginia Leith) and tie her to a tree, where she is tormented by a mentally unbalanced soldier (future director Paul Mazursky).  Before making their escape, the soldiers determine the location of an enemy base and formulate a plot to assassinate its commanding officer. Kino Lorber will release the film on Blu-Ray and DVD October 23rd following a restoration by the Library of Congress. The Central Park Five Headed to Theaters The documentary is about five black and Latino teenagers from Harlem were arrested and later convicted of brutally beating and raping a white woman in New York City’s Central Park, but acquitted later after a confession by a serial rapist and DNA evidence. The Central Park Five will screen at the upcoming Toronto International Film Festival and will close Doc NYC in November. Jeff Deutchman, Director of Acquisitions & Productions for Sundance Selects/IFC Films, with co-director, writer and producer McMahon on behalf of the filmmakers. Occupy Wall Street Doc Set for September Magnolia Pictures label Magnet Releasing will bring Occupy Unmasked by Stephen K. Bannon to a limited theatrical release day and date with VOD in late September. The film takes viewers into the Occupy Wall Street camps around the country in New York, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., Portland, Denver and Oakland for an up-close look at what’s happened there and who’s at the heart of the movement, documenting criminal activity and raw brutality in the camps – much of which has not been reported by the mainstream media. The film also features the late conservative commentator Andrew Breitbart. Julia Louis-Dreyfus, James Gandolfini, Catherine Keener, Toni Collette Start New Comedy Indie filmmaker Nicole Holofcener directing her fifth feature from a script she wrote. The Fox Searchlight project revolves around soon-to-be divorced empty nester Eva (Louis-Dreyfus) who meets Marianne (Keener) whom she considers the embodiment of her “perfect self.” Eva decides to take a chance on a new love interest, Albert (Gandolfini), but things get complicated when she discovers he’s in fact Marianne’s ex-husband. The film will shoot in and around Los Angeles throughout August and September. Around the ‘net… Bruce Dern and Will Forte Set for Alexander Payne’s Nebraska Paramount has green-lit the black and white production, which is set to begin production in mid-October. Bob Nelson and Dern wrote the $13 million project about a cranky alcoholic dad who believes he’s struck it rich in a sweepstakes and undertakes a road trip with his underachieving son (Forte) to claim the winnings. The film is apparently going to be ready for the 2013 Oscar season, Deadline reports . Joe Manganiello Eyes Arnold Schwarzenegger Action Thriller Manganiello is in negotiations to join Schwarzenegger’s Breacher , which David Ayer is directing. Written by Skip Woods ( Swordfish ), the film follows 10 DEA agents who pull off a heist during an operation, but afterward start dying one by one, THR reports .

Brie Larson’s Criterion List Is Pretty Fantastic

Actress/musician Brie Larson — AKA Scott Pilgrim ‘s Envy Adams, of 21 Jump Street and United States of Tara fame — is also a Criterion Collection fangirl, and given her terrific recent round of the cineaste label’s Top 10, she’s probably got a better-stocked DVD catalogue than you. Consider Red Desert : “Antonioni’s first color film. I felt like I was opening my eyes for the first time. An incredible palette and commitment to tone. He actually painted trees whites and grays! I have always wanted to talk technicalities with someone about this film. The fog? How did he do the fog?!” And, on Bergman’s Scenes from a Marriage : “This was the most invested in any relationship I had ever been — including my own.” Read Larson’s full Top 10 and share in my newfound nerdy girlcrush. Frank Miller’s Batman: The Dark Knight Returns Graphic Novel Adaptation To Arrive In September

If you’re already jonesing for more gritty Batman heroics, you won’t have to wait for the eventual home video release of The Dark Knight Rises to get your fix: The folks at Warner Premiere have announced the September release of Batman: The Dark Knight Returns , an animated adaptation of Frank Miller’s celebrated 1986 graphic novel charting the return of the retired Caped Crusader to a Gotham City in need. Bonus cool points: Peter Weller as Batman! Miller’s Dark Knight Returns story, which earned critical acclaim and has been heralded as one of the best graphic novels of all time, joins a slew of animated features from the studio behind previous direct-to-DVD animations Superman: Doomsday and Batman: Year One and will hit DVD/Blu-ray on September 25. This version of Bat-lore follows a 55-year-old Bruce Wayne as he comes out of retirement to battle old foe Harvey Dent/Two Face, also tangling with The Joker, local cops, and the U.S. government. Sidekick Robin pops up — in the form of a 13-year-old girl named Carrie — as does fellow DC superhero Superman, with whom Batman battles. (Christopher Nolan’s TDKR borrowed elements from Miller’s Dark Knight Returns , Batman’s retirement, beef with authorities, and arguably his fate included.) Bonus features on the Dark Knight Returns release: • Standard and high definition versions of the feature film • UltraViolet™* • Sneak Peak at Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 2 , the next DC Universe Animated Original Movie • Featurette – “Her Name is Carrie … Her Role is Robin” – An all-new featurette. Experience the role of Robin, through the eyes of a female warrior. • Featurette – “Batman and Me: The Bob Kane Story” – A documentary comprehensively chronicling the remarkable life of the creator of Batman. • Two bonus episodes from Batman: The Animated Series handpicked by producer Alan Burnett: Two-Face, Parts 1 and 2 . • Digital Comic – “Batman: The Dark Knight Returns” (digital comic with cover art and three full comic pages) [via THR ]

Gael García Bernal Plays Hero of Democracy in No

He’s made dozens of films since his 2001 breakout Y Tu Mamá También charmed audiences not only at home in Mexico, but also north of the border. Since then he played a priest in The Crime of Father Amaro , acted with the likes of Brad Pitt and Cate Blachett in Babel , a footballer (soccer player) in Rudo Y Cursi and even the revolutionary Ernest “Ché” Guevara in The Motorcycle Diaries . But now Gael García Bernal , the Mexican actor/director/producer and even festival founder (he and fellow actor Diego Luna co-founded Mexico’s Ambulante Documentary Festival), is playing a more conventional revolutionary of sorts in Pablo Larraín ‘s No , which debuted last May in Cannes and will screen at the Locarno Film Festival , which opens Wednesday. In No , he plays an advertising executive who creates an ad campaign to defeat Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet in 1988. The publicity campaign by ad bigwig Rene Saavedra helped topple the brutal dictator who is still reviled and praised at home. The TV campaign urged Chileans to vote “No” to another eight-year term for Pinochet. The campaign worked and Pinochet was ousted with 55 per cent voting against his return and paved the way for a resurgence of Chilean democracy. García Bernal told the A.P. that he often met Latin American exiles while growing up in Mexico, but didn’t understand their plight until he began shooting No . “This made me realize the profound pain caused by the dictatorship and it hit me hard,” he told A.P. (http://news.yahoo.com/garcia-bernal-feels-chiles-pain-latest-film-033203261.html) before No ‘s premiere in the South American country’s capital Santiago on Monday. “The director wanted to make a movie about the history of what went on in 1988, as well as an introspection and reflection on democracy.” Pinochet continues as a divisive figure in Chile. He came to power in 1973 in a CIA-backed coup that overthrew the country’s democratically elected leftist president Salvador Allende and ruled with an iron fist until he left office. Up to 3,200 were killed and tens of thousands were tortured and jailed. But supporters laud Pinochet’s free-market policies that transformed the country’s economy. “Before this campaign no one dared to talk, so when they were finally given a chance, the knee-jerk reaction could have been let’s tell the world about everything that’s wrong with Pinochet — his countless atrocities and about those who have died. But the minds behind the campaign said ‘no,’ let’s use another way,” Pablo Larrain, the film’s director told the AP. “They said— the way to oust Pinochet is to show something positive about what would come next, to tell people: ‘the happiness is coming,’ and that was the turning point.” [Source: A.P. http://news.yahoo.com/garcia-bernal-feels-chiles-pain-latest-film-033203261.html]

Avengers Blu-Ray Clip: Watch The Post-Credits Easter Egg

Heads up, fanboys and girls: Marvel has released a barrage of Avengers clips ahead of its September 25 Blu-ray/DVD street date, including the geek-baiting post-credits scene that had fans in a tizzy. No, not the one that boosted sales of shawarma around the nation ; the other Easter Egg, which revealed a menacing glimpse of the real orchestrator behind Loki’s invasion of Earth. The impending Blu-ray/DVD release has also given Marvel occasion to release a handful of additional clips from the film, reminding what life was like before The Dark Knight Rises came along and stole everyone’s thunder. I’d include a spoiler warning here, but if you’re reading this now and haven’t seen Avengers yet… well, I can’t help you there. The post-credits peek reveals Marvel baddie Thanos, who is believed to be the villain in the next Avengers pic. This might also be the closest we’ll come to another Hellboy sequel. (Kidding!) Ashley Tisdale Big Cleavage of the Day

Ashley Tisdale has a battered fucking face. My god this girl was not meant to be on TV, and the worst of it is that she’s had plastic surgery awards and has won Teen Choice babe of the year awards…in some kind of obvious scam or lie or marketing strategy because I know dudes who are prettier than her…but she’s got a tight body cuz she does work out and she’s rocking some tits, that are a good tool to distract from the obvious downfalls that she has….like her face…and here she is at the Step It Up Stomp the Yard I Belong on DVD movie premiere…because that’s the caliber event she is invited to attend….cuz bitch is falling off and I’m willing to catch her thanks to that whole no standards thing I always talk about… Here’s the video… TO SEE THE REST OF THE PICS FOLLOW THIS LINK

Expendables 2 Comic-Con Poster: Testosterone Tsunami

I’m hugely fond of the headline accompanying this Expendables 2 “Comic-Con poster” (just what the movie needed, seriously, because surely none of the thousands of culture obsessives in San Diego will know anything about it ) on Ain’t it Cool News: “This EXPENDABLES 2 Comic-Con Poster Has Enough Booms, Badasses, Barrels To Humble Even The Most Uppity Of Geeks!!” Yes, it certainly does. You know what else it has? Hilarity. Somehow this all makes me envision Sylvester Stallone wolfing down a testosterone taco a few years past its sell-by date and then racing to the nearest Kinko’s and evacuating every last granule of his meal inside a color copier whose lid comes crashing down and short circuits and sputters and churns out a boomtastic accident likely intended for an imminent Chinatown bootleg DVD sleeve yet is just tasteless enough to qualify for Comic-Con signage. The man is good! Or at least he will be once his stomach settles. Better, anyway. [ Ain’t it Cool News ]
