By Jason Kaufman Heather Locklear Photo: Jon Kopaloff/FilmMagic Heather Locklear was rushed to a California hospital on Thursday with what law officials are labeling “a medical emergency.” TMZ reports that the emergency was a dangerous mix of prescription medication and alcohol. She was taken by ambulance from her home after a call was placed to 911. “Emergency response personnel responded to a medical emergency call at Ms. Locklear’s residence,” Ventura County Sheriff’s Capt. Mike Aranda told People later Thursday. “Once they arrived, it was determined that Ms. Locklear needed to be transported to the hospital for further medical attention.” This is the second medical scare for the 50-year-old actress within the past 13 months. In December of 2010, Locklear landed in the hospital for a brief stay for a bacterial infection. 2011 was not without bumps for the actress either after a split with longtime beau Jack Wagner, once her co-star on “Melrose.” The couple had been engaged for only three months. Locklear had appeared in public as recently as Tuesday night at a Lakers game, reports TMZ. Locklear had returned to television in 2009 to revive her role as Amanda Woodward on a reboot of “Melrose Place.” Locklear had proved dependable for weekly watercooler discussion during the series’ original run in the mid-’90s.

Heavy D reportedly passed away this afternoon at a Los Angeles hospital. Via TMZ : We’ve learned a 911 call was placed from Heavy’s Beverly Hills home around 11:25 AM to report an unconscious male on the walkway . When help arrived, we’re told Heavy D was conscious and speaking — and was transported to a nearby hospital. He died a short time later. Cops are investigating the death — and so far, there are no obvious signs of foul play. Heavy D had several massive hits — including “Now That We Found Love.” He also wrote and performed the theme song for “In Living Color” … and appeared as an actor in the movie “Life.” Heavy just performed at the BET Awards in October — and appeared to be fine Update: The International Business Times just released comments from the L.A. coroner, but they still provide very little information about the cause of death: A spokesman for the Los Angeles Coroner’s Office spoke to the International Business Times Tuesday evening about Heavy D’s cause of death saying, “All we know is he was taken from a location in Beverly Hills on the 400 block of North Maple Drive to the emergency room at Cedar Sinai Medical Center and declared [dead] there,” Spokesman Craig Harvey said. He said the L.A. Coroner’s Office is looking into the cause of death, and that an investigation is under way. “It’s in its infancy stage right now. Poor lady…this is absolutely ridiculous!! When Doreen Wallace fell and broke her hip in the lobby of a Niagara Falls hospital, she figured at least she’d get help — and fast. But that’s not what happened. Instead, the 82-year-old Wallace — who was leaving with her son after visiting her dying husband at Greater Niagara General Hospital on Oct. 8 — was told by staff no one could help her until an ambulance was called. To a hospital. “It was horrible. It really was. Everybody who walked through the door stopped and stared at me,” said Wallace, who already had a broken arm from a previous fall. She ended up spending almost 30 minutes on the ground. “I was inside the hospital. Why did they have to wait for an ambulance to come and pick me up?” As she lay face down on a metal grate, her right arm slashed, a security guard called for help and two nurses from the emergency room came over. But Wallace’s son said they refused to help until paramedics arrived. “I was floored,” said Mike Wallace. “We’re probably, maybe, like a 50-yard walk, literally, down to the emergency department.” In the meantime, Wallace’s head was wrapped in a dirty blanket and the security guard helped wipe away her blood with paper towel. Eventually, an orthopedic surgeon came across the scene and with the help of an assistant, moved the elderly woman into a wheelchair. Shortly afterwards, paramedics finally arrived at the main entrance — their ambulance allegedly originating in St. Catharines because no one at the hospital in Niagara Falls was available to help. The supervisor of the Niagara Health System said the incident stemmed from a communication problem among staff. “We shouldn’t have called the emergency room,” said Dr. Kevin Smith, who was hired on to aid the beleaguered region at the end of August. He said when a person is hurt in hospital, staff should call a “code,” meaning a team — not necessarily in the ER — is paged to help immediately. When asked why staff felt the need to call for an ambulance, Smith said that may have been an old rule at the hospital. He said staff has now been briefed on the correct policy and a review is underway. Health Minister Deb Matthews said the situation is unacceptable. “Clearly this is very disappointing and isn’t the standard of care that people should expect,” she said, adding she is pleased a review is being done. Rumors are already swirling that he tried to overdose or commit suicide. I don’t necessary believe rumors unless it comes from the horses mouth. Unnamed family sources tell English tabloid The Sun that singer quit drinking cold turkey. While initial autopsy results were inconclusive and the outcome of further toxicology tests will not be available for several more weeks, a report out of England is raising new questions about what might have killed the troubled singer. Winehouse , who famously struggled with drugs and alcohol during her rocket ride to fame in 2006-2007, was drug-free for the past three years, according to statements from her father, Mitch Winehouse. But the 27-year-old star appeared to still be struggling with alcohol, and unnamed family sources told English tabloid The Sun that it might have been Amy’s cold-turkey approach to quitting drinking that did her in. The sources said Winehouse’s decision to give up drinking entirely for three weeks might have given a lethal “shock” to her system. “Abstinence gave her body such a fright they thought it was eventually the cause of her death,” the source said. Click for photos of Amy Winehouse’s life and career. “He [Amy’s father, Mitch] said doctors had told Amy to gradually reduce her intake of alcohol and to avoid bingeing at all costs. Amy told him she couldn’t do that. It was all or nothing, and she gave up completely … Mitch said the shock of giving up, after everything she had been through over a bad few years, was just too much for her to take.” The family has reportedly speculated that Winehouse died as a result of a seizure because her small frame could not withstand such a dramatic withdrawal. People magazine reported that it had confirmed the family’s speculation about the cause of death. On Sunday, the singer’s U.K. representative, Chris Goodman, told TMZ that Winehouse was found alone in her bed by a bodyguard who had been hired to keep an eye on her. “She was in her bedroom after saying she wanted to sleep, and when he went to wake her he found she wasn’t breathing,” Goodman said. “He called the emergency services straight away. He was very shocked. At this stage no one knows how she died. She died alone in bed.” MTV News asked Dr. Sam Zakhari, director of the Division of Metabolism and Health Effects at the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, if it’s possible for someone to have this kind of reaction to stopping alcohol intake. Dr. Zakhari, who did not treat Winehouse and has no firsthand knowledge of her case, spoke in general terms about the scenario described by the unnamed source. “People who drink heavily or who are alcoholics and stop all of a sudden may have withdrawal symptoms that range from agitation to intense anxiety to tremors, seizures, convulsions and delusions,” said Dr. Zakhari. “In rare cases, it can affect the heart and cause cardiac standstill (heart stoppage), but that’s in very rare cases.” Dr. Zakhari said it’s difficult to say with any certainty if quitting cold turkey could cause a collapse, because there are many factors that play into that scenario. “You have to look at their nutritional status, family history of heart problems, whether they are using other medications that can interact with alcohol, whether they abuse other substances,” he said. “The accurate answer is that we don’t know if something like this is due to stopping drinking alcohol because the result depends on such a multitude of factors.” Dr. Dan Hall-Slavin, a psychiatrist and a consultant in addiction at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, agreed that it’s possible, but not common for someone who quits drinking to have such drastic health effects. “There is a phenomenon called ‘kindling,’ where withdrawals from alcohol can get worse and worse over time,” said Dr. Hall-Slavin, who also had no firsthand knowledge of the Winehouse case and was speaking in general terms. “From a clinical standpoint, you never tell anyone who has been actively drinking to just stop until they get into a monitored setting because alcohol is a central nervous system depressant and while some can stop and not experience problems, others with a previous history of alcohol withdrawal can experience very serious symptoms like seizures and a severe withdrawal called Delirium Tremens, where your temperature goes up, you become dehydrated, and you can die in that state.” Sometimes, people who suffer a seizure in private can aspirate the contents of their stomach and die, but different factors can also play in, such as other health issues that result from daily drinking at high volumes and the short and longer-term consequences to the cardiovascular system from use of stimulants such as cocaine. “The other factor is that alcohol is more toxic for women at lower doses over a shorter period of time than for men,” Hall-Slavin noted. “It’s partly how alcohol is distributed and metabolized in the body.” Will You Remember Winehouse More For Her Music Or Troubles? Doctor reportedly gave her the all clear the night before her death. On Sunday, her U.K. representative, Chris Goodman, told TMZ that Winehouse was found alone in her bed by a bodyguard who had been hired to keep an eye on her. “She was in her bedroom after saying she wanted to sleep, and when he went to wake her he found she wasn’t breathing,” Goodman said of the troubled star . “He called the emergency services straight away. He was very shocked. At this stage no one knows how she died. She died alone in bed.” Police have called Winehouse’s death “unexplained.” An autopsy is slated to take place on Monday (July 25), with a funeral likely to follow quickly, within the next day or so, as required by Jewish law. Results of the autopsy are not expected before Tuesday. Winehouse’s father, Mitch, a cab driver-turned-lounge-singer, flew back to England on Sunday in the wake of his daughter’s death and visited her Camden apartment on Monday morning. According to BBC News , he thanked her fans, who have gathered in a vigil outside the flat, for their support. “I can’t tell you what this means to us. It really is making this a lot easier for us,” he told the gathered mourners. “Amy was about one thing and that was love. Her whole life was devoted to her family and her friends and to you guys as well.” The singer’s mother, Janis, and brother, Alex, also visited the site to see the collection of flowers, cards and photos that Winehouse’s admirers have left. On Sunday, the family released a statement in which they said, “Our family has been left bereft by the loss of Amy, a wonderful daughter, sister, niece. She leaves a gaping hole in our lives. We are coming together to remember her and we would appreciate some privacy and space at this terrible time.” The quoted Janis Winehouse on Sunday saying that her daughter had not been well a day before her death. “She seemed out of it,” Janis reportedly told the tabloid. “But her passing so suddenly still hasn’t hit me.” England’s Daily Telegraph reported that Winehouse was visited at home by her doctor on Friday night, 24 hours before her body was discovered at 4 p.m. on Saturday. Police sources told the paper that no drugs were found in the house and that the security detail had last spoken to her around 10 a.m. on Saturday, when she said she was going to take a rest in her room. The doctor had reportedly been visiting Winehouse regularly to help her combat the ill effects of her years of drinking and drugging. In 2008, Mitch Winehouse revealed that Amy was suffering from the early stages of the incurable pulmonary ailment emphysema, including scarring in her lungs. “The doctor was happy with her condition. When he left on Friday night he had no concerns. Less than 24 hours later she was found dead,” an unnamed source told The Sun tabloid. “Amy’s health has been very fragile and she has been having a series of checkups.” Winehouse’s final public appearance was last Wednesday, when she joined her goddaughter, Dionne Bromfield, during a show at the Roundhouse in Camden. Though she didn’t sing, Winehouse danced alongside Bromfield and encouraged the audience to buy the teenager’s just-released second album, Good for the Soul, which, like her 2009 debut, was released through Winehouse’s label, Lioness Records. Before that, Winehouse had pulled out of a series of European comeback concerts in June after a disastrous gig in Serbia in which she was booed after appearing unsteady and disheveled onstage. She had reportedly completed a stay in alcohol rehab after that tour cancellation and had been under orders not to drink.
