BP’s New Spokesperson Is Former Dick Cheney Aid

photo via flickr If it’s bad and it’s related to oil, you know Dick Cheney must be involved in some way. This was true from 2000-2008 and it’s just as true today. Cheney’s press secretary during his 2004, Anne Womack-Kolton, has been hired by BP to lead its US media team. Womack-Kolton ran the public affairs team in the Bush Department of Energy and defended Cheney’s secret meetings with oil company executives in 2001. … Read the full story on TreeHugger

Consensus Matters II: Blogging is not Science

Image credit: InfoThought When I wrote a post last week asking why so many people hate environmentalists , RecycleNot brought up a climate skeptic/denialist talking point I hadn’t heard in a while—that science does not work by consensus, and that argument from authority is a logical fallacy. On the face of it, it’s an attractive argument for those who don’t believe in man-made climate change, and one we heard many times when TreeHugger was inundated with ‘skeptic’ commen… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Seinfeld Rickshaws, Bike Taxis and Other People-Powered Transport

Credit: Screen capture . An important anniversary recently passed with little or no fanfare. April marked 12 years since the airing of ” The Bookstore ,” the classic Seinfeld episode when Kramer and Newman try to start a rickshaw business in New York City. Their plans failed, hilariously, but the world knew overnight what a rickshaw was. What have rickshaws been up to since? Well, they were popular in Asia years before they became a Seinfeld plot … Read the full story on TreeHugger

50 Cent And Tony Yayo Talk Invitation Tour Kickoff

‘I have to keep changing the set so that it’s not the same show every night,’ Fif says of concert video leaking online. By Shaheem Reid Tony Yayo Photo: MTV News 50 Cent comes home Friday night (May 28) when he starts his first tour in more than three years on U.S. soil . G-Unit member Tony Yayo said there’s no way he’s missing the trek. “I’mma go out. I gotta go pick up some money with Fif,” Yayo told MTV News last week about the Invitation Tour. “It’s too easy with this guy. Stop playing with me, Fif. I’mma go out on the U.S. run. I think [Lloyd] Banks is going out. We just doing new things. 50 is so much into the movies; he started paying attention to the music again. He’s so much into the movies, he’s trying to be the next Will Smith. “It’s no place like home,” Yayo added about performing in America. “It’s no place like traveling in the U.S. Overseas is a whole different experience. The U.S. run is going to be great. Our first date is Cleveland. We’re going to Vegas, everywhere.” On Friday, 50 told Cleveland.com that he’ll be refining his stage show throughout the trek. “This tour was designed for me to come back and massage my new ideas on the public,” 50 said. “Because of the technology, there’s no real mystique to your actual performance anymore. After the first show, that’s gonna be on YouTube. So I have to keep changing the set so that it’s not the same show every night. Some of the same staging and production value, but I have to keep changing it. That means more rehearsals in the process, but you offer more than one show. I got so much material, I could actually perform for three hours straight, so it’s easier for me to make the decision to change music than a newer artist that doesn’t have that kind of catalog, where they can keep switching songs to play music that people are going to enjoy.” Expect a live band to be backing the Unit. “I love it,” Yayo said of the instrumentation. “It’s nothing like a live band. Shout-out to my live band in L.A. Instruments, the live band, the guitar, the drums. You feel it, the crowd feels it. What I bring to the table is the energy. Banks is lyrical. 50 has the brains, the smarts. I bring the energy. So when I hear the drums, the bass line, the guitars, the energy level is raised up, versus just having the DJ scratching in the back.” Are you planning to check out the G-Unit on tour? Getting Developing Nations on a Greener Path Without Creating a New Renewable Energy ‘Colonialism’

Family and friends pose in front of a house in South Africa with a new solar heating system. Photo by Abri_Beluga via Flickr No matter how much it might help the environment for fewer nations to produce and consume at U.S.-style levels, slowing global development would clearly be an unworkable — and profoundly unfair — way to address the climate crisis. As environmental scientist Ernst Ulrich von Weizsäcker put it this morning at a conference in Berlin: “Poor and cle… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Weekday Vegetarian: Cool Down with a Sorrel Salad with Creamy Chive Dressing

We are now into our third day in a row of temperatures in the over 90F range. Walking the dog at 6:30 am proved to be too hot for us both. It’s hard to get up the energy to cook anything, and it’s hard to get up the energy to eat as well. Easy salads seem to be the thing, but that can get boring pretty quickly, so I wanted to try some new greens. … Read the full story on TreeHugger

‘The Hills’ Recap: Can Kristin And Brody Work As Friends With Benefits?

Plus, a sober Stephanie Pratt reenters the dating world. By Amy Wilkinson Looking good in a crop top, sometimes just isn’t enough to save a faltering friends-with-benefits relationship. Brody Jenner learned that lesson the hard way on Tuesday night’s episode of “The Hills,” as his budding romance with a new girl got in the way of his relationship with ex Kristin Cavallari. When Brody and Kristin decided to hook up last week, they were both clear that they loved the single life and that their relationship would just be casual — a fact Brody reiterated by announcing that he was going on a date with another girl. “I’m not looking for a relationship,” Brody reminded a plainly peeved Kristin. “I’m enjoying being single.” Meanwhile, the very un-single Audrina was trying to convince boyfriend Ryan Cabrera to go out with her and her dramatic friends — a crowd Ryan has gone to great lengths to avoid. “I’ll be waiting at home in my candy thong reading ‘Catcher in the Rye,’ ” he said, though he did end up being a good sport and going. After facing the stress of her DUI and distancing herself from brother Spencer, Stephanie told Lo that she felt like she was in a good place to start dating someone. And wouldn’t you know it, Lo had just the guy for her: her boyfriend Scott’s friend Max. Getting slightly ahead of herself, Stephanie wondered aloud how her potential date would react to her being 23 and sober. Lo told her not to worry. But Lo wasn’t the only girl dishing out relationship advice. Audrina met up for a chill evening at Kristin’s house, where they problem talked about Brody and Kristin’s little arrangement. “We’re having a good time,” Kristin explained. She then tried to dial up Brody on his cell, but the call went directly to voicemail, because Brody was on a date with new girl McKaela. “I have a no-phone-at-the-table rule,” McKaela informed him, prompting Brody to ignore the call. Brody rubbed his new flirtation in Kristin’s face even more by bringing McKaela out to meet the gang. “Kristin is going to flip out when she comes,” Audrina told Brody. Though Kristin didn’t necessarily “flip out,” she was visibly hurt by the slight — and the large amount of PDA going on between Brody and his date. After complaining to Kristin about how she was being unkind to his date, Brody and McKaela finally left the gathering for a little alone time. And then it was Stephanie’s turn to pursue new romantic possibilities. Stephanie went on a seemingly successful double date with new guy Max, with Lo and Scott in tow. At the end of the night, Max offered his jacket, and Stephanie offered her number. Kristin finally decided she needed to speak with Brody about what had happened a few nights before and went over to his condo for a chat, which quickly escalated into a heated argument. “You were being really rude being all over McKaela in front of me like that,” Kristin started. Brody replied that it was Kristin who had been rude by not paying attention to McKaela. By the time Brody finally admitted he liked both girls and was just having fun, Kristin had had enough. “I’m not going to wait around while you figure out what you want to do. It’s not fair,” she said. And with that, she stormed out of Brody’s condo. Do you think Brody and Kristin should get back together for real, or continue their casual relationship? Share your thoughts in the comments. “The Hills: Final Season” airs at 10 p.m. ET/PT every Tuesday, followed by “The City” at 10:30 p.m. ET/PT on MTV. Nicole Scherzinger Calls ‘Dancing With The Stars’ Win ‘Surreal’

‘It’s slowly sinking in,’ Pussycat Doll says of Tuesday’s victory. By Jocelyn Vena Photo: ABC After showing why she was the front-runner to win “Dancing With the Stars” from the beginning, on Tuesday night Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger, along with her partner Derek Hough, won the show and took home the mirror-ball trophy. And even though it seemed like she would win from the start, Scherzinger admitted that the victory still doesn’t feel real. “I was genuinely surprised,” the “DWTS” champ said Wednesday (May 26) on “Good Morning America” , just hours after she won. “I had the most amazing people I was up against. It was so awesome; it’s still surreal.” Partner Hough said that he, however, always felt the pair could go all the way. “We felt the energy from the first week,” said the dancer, who also won the show’s seventh season, with Brooke Burke. “There was something amazing about it. … It truly was a phenomenal season.” In an interview with USA Today, she admitted that during the competition she learned to be less hard on herself. “I still can’t believe it,” the dancer said about the victory. “It’s slowly sinking in.” For the finale, she said, she “decided to let it all hang out.” She noted that being on the show has made her “a stronger person,” adding, “I’ve learned I can’t control everything. I’ve learned to let go. It’s been enlightening.” She knew that she had a good chance of winning after she scored a perfect score on Tuesday night. “After the tango, Derek and I started crying backstage,” she said. “It felt so good, and we knew we were going to be OK.” Scherzinger says she has Prince to thank for convincing her to go on the show that finally taught her not to be so type A all the time. “It’s not good being a perfectionist,” she said, summing up what she learned during her time on the competition. Who Won Dancing with the Stars?

Ten weeks and a dozen and a half routines later, Season 10 of Dancing With the Stars has finally come to an end. The winner of the coveted Mirrorball trophy was unveiled Tuesday, with three contestants remaining entering the night. Would it be Evan Lysacek, limber Olympic figure skating gold medalist, looking to add the famed Mirrorball to burgeoning trophy case? Would it be Nicole Scherzinger, the lovely lead Pussycat Doll and lord of the Dancing With the Stars season from beginning to end? Would it be Erin Andrews, embattled ESPN reporter turned ballroom aficionado, and a woman who everyone has to be rooting for? All three made compelling cases this Spring, but there can be only one winner. Follow the jump to see who took home the Dancing with the Stars title … Nicole Scherzinger! Dominant most of the season, she and Derek Hough managed to maintain and even build their lead against Evan Lysacek and Anna Trebunskaya in their last dance. They received a perfect 30 for their jive, Len’s claim that Nicole deserved to be the winner of the competition and a hug from Gladys Knight. It was theirs to lose. Erin finished third, and Evan just fell short in his bid to succeed fellow Olympians Apolo Anton Ohno, Kristi Yamaguchi and Shawn Johnson as the Mirrorball winner. Nicole Scherzinger deserved it, though, beyond any doubt. The odds were in Nicole and Derek’s favor, but there have been seasons when the highest-scoring star hasn’t taken home the top prize, so you never really can tell. Thanks to Evan, Erin and Nicole, Dancing with the Stars viewers may have been the biggest winners in this 10th season of competition – it was the best season yet. As for the two hours of filler, we got to see the eliminated contestants make their returns and keep the energy up and moving for their performances throughout. Well, with the exception of Kate Gosselin , who showed up for a revamped version of her much-maligned “Paparazzi” paso doble and to shill her two new shows. In a very odd move, Kate got on some kind of lift with a camera on it, and literally rose up above the audience to … somewhere. It was hard to tell. Who cares. The cheesiest moment of the night went to Jake Pavelka, who waltzed onto the ballroom floor and traded his partner Chelsie for real-life fiancee Vienna Girardi . If that weren’t enough, the dance was set to Jeffrey Osbourne’s “On the Wings of Love” … the theme of Jake’s season of The Bachelor . You may vomit when ready. But back to the champions. Let’s salute Nicole and Derek on a job well done, and a trophy well-earned. Click to enlarge some of their best Dancing moments …
