An Oregon man is in critical condition this week after apparently contracting the plague. Yes, the plague generally associated with the Middle Ages. Oregon health officials believe the hospitalized man was infected with the “black death” plague, a bacterial infection that affects the blood stream. According to The Oregonian , the Bend resident became ill with the bubonic plague – the cause of the “black death” – after he was bitten on the hand. A stray cat bit him while he was trying to get a mouse out of its mouth … for reasons unknown. He was listed in critical condition at the hospital. Black Death Plague in Oregon It’s actually the fifth case in Oregon since 1995. The stray cat has since died, and has been sent to the Center for Disease Control for testing. Often transmitted by fleas that are infected with the Yersinia pestis bacteria, black plague is transmitted through bites, according to the CDC. Symptoms include a swollen lymph gland known as a “bubo,” fever, chills, headache, and exhaustion. Illness usually occurs 2-6 days after infection. During the “Black Death” period starting in the late 1340s and lasting for centuries, 25 million lives were claimed, according to National Geographic. For reference, Europe’s population was around 70 million at the time. “This can be a serious illness,” said Emilio DeBess, Oregon’s public health veterinarian said. “But it is treatable with antibiotics, and it’s preventable.” Treatment consists of hospitalization, antibiotics and medical isolation. Only 1 in 7 cases in the U.S. end in death nowadays … let’s hear it for science!

On Wednesday (June 13), Yeezy’s Los Angeles home was broken into while the rap superstar is out wrapping up his European Watch the Throne Tour with Jay-Z. TMZ broke the news, and an LAPD representative confirmed to MTV News that there was a break-in in the Hollywood Hills area, but did not give any information beyond that. According to TMZ, someone from ‘Ye’s camp called the police to report a break-in. It’s unclear if anything was actually taken, but witnesses told the site the thieves dropped some of Kanye’s things on their way out. In May, it was reported that the G.O.O.D. Music general put the same house on sale as a “pocket listing,” meaning all parties agreed to keep the listing private. At the same time, Yeezy’s main squeeze, Kim Kardashian, also put her L.A.-area home up for sale, sparking rumors that the couple were planning to move in together . In other Kimye news , a Yeezy rep shot down rumors that West tweeted, then quickly deleted, a nude picture of Kim. “In regards to this ‘story’ that Kanye posted and then took down intimate pictures on his Twitter account: TOTALLY FALSE. Laughably so,” a Kanye rep told MTV’s RapFix blog. “This phantom tweet never occurred on his account. This is obviously the desperate, sad act of someone seeking to gain media exposure by exploiting Kanye’s notoriety. ?uestlove hypes up the ‘diverse lineup’ at the fifth annual music festival, including Wale, De La Soul and Meek Mill. By Rob Markman ?uestlove Photo: MTV Hip-hop’s hardest-working band is getting ready to put in overtime this weekend as the Roots put on their fifth annual Roots Picnic in the City of Brotherly Love. Wale , Kid Cudi, Meek Mill, De La Soul and Diplo will join the world-famous Roots crew and perform during the two-day music festival on Saturday and Sunday at Penn’s Landing in Philadelphia. The picnic has grown over the years as the idea was birthed back in the band’s early days while they were touring in Europe. “This year will mark the first time that we’re doing two days instead of one,” Roots maestro ?uestlove told MTV News back in May. “I’m extremely proud of the diverse lineup that we have. Between Wale, Meek, Kid Cudi, De La Soul, Rakim, St. Vincent, Major Lazer, Diplo, Danny [Brown], it’s a whole vast array of acts that we have on the show.” On Saturday, the Roots will back iconic New York trio De La Soul for their performance, and Sunday they will hit the stage with Rakim to honor his 1987 debut album with Rakim. “On the second day we’re celebrating Rakim ‘s 25th anniversary of Paid in Full, so we’re going to do the entire album from start to finish,” ?uesto explained. “That’s like a tradition, last year we did Illmatic from start to finish with Nas.” Last year, ?uestlove, Black Thought and company backed Rakim for an intimate concert at the legendary New York jazz club the Blue Note . “The Roots is hip-hop royalty right now,” Ra told us back then. “From what they do, what they bring to the table, for them to holla at me, put this together, invite me out, that let me know, ‘Yo, it’s official.’ Otherwise, they wouldn’t. To err is human, to forgive DIVINE!!! Martin Short gets major kudos for not being upset about Kathie Lee Gifford dragging him down a likely painful memory lane this week. Martin Short isn’t one to hold a grudge. The actor, 62, says he understands that Today show host Kathie Lee Gifford didn’t intend to offend during his Wednesday appearance on the show with her questions about his wife, Nancy Dolman–who passed away in 2010 from ovarian cancer. “You and Nancy have one of the greatest marriages of anybody in show business,” Gifford said. “How many years for you guys now?” “We . . . married 36 years,” Short replied. “But you’re still in love!” the host exclaimed. “Madly in love,” he answered. “Madly in love.” During a commercial break, Gifford learned of her cringe-worthy gaffe and apologized on-air. “Martin just told me as he was leaving, he said, ‘Kathie, you probably didn’t know,’ but his beautiful, precious wife Nancy did pass away a year and a half ago . . . I feel so badly,” the remorseful Gifford told viewers. On Thursday, Short spoke to E! News about the awkward exchange–and made it clear he doesn’t hold it against Gifford. “I think that it’s live television and people make mistakes and there’s no ill will intended,” the Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted star shared. “And I think it’s nice to aspire to be that way.” At least he’s understanding about it.
