By Jocelyn Vena, with additional reporting by Rob Markman Lady Gaga as Jo Calderone backstage at the 2011 VMAs Photo: MTV News Lady Gaga might not have been at the Video Music Awards on Sunday night, but her stand-in, male alter ego Jo Calderone , promised MTV News that Gaga couldn’t have been more excited about nabbing two more Moonmen . “You know, I think that this award means more to her than anything she’s ever received,” he told us backstage. “She was texting me after the award, after I picked it up for her, and she just said, ‘You know, more than anything I’ve ever gotten before, this means more to me, because “Born This Way” is about the fans and the fans are more important to me than anything I do; more important than f—ing breathing, you know?’ ” And Calderone wasn’t lying: Gaga later took to Twitter to thank her dedicated fans for their votes. “I couldn’t be more overwhelmed+grateful as I am tonight. Little Monsters inspire me. Never give up on your vision, you were born this way,” she wrote. “To win 2VMAs, Best Video with a Message + Best Female Video for ‘Born This Way’ means the world. I have never believed in a work so much.” She also appreciated the fans’ support of Calderone. “Thank u monsters for supporting @jocalderone attending instead of myself,” she wrote . “He came over last night with 2 moonmen, whiskey + we watched VMAs.” The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards have wrapped, but the real action is just getting started! Lady Gaga’s VMA Performance All About ‘Fearlessness’

We really tried to get Laurieann Gibson, Lady Gaga’s creative director , to spill her guts about what Mother Monster has planned for her VMA performance on Sunday, but she’s keeping things under wraps — in the best way possible. She jokingly said a few censored (and, considering how much she’s bleeped in the embedded video, obscene) things about what viewers will see. Long story short: She’s not telling. But Gibson did say of Gaga’s opening performance, “I hope that people take the fearlessness away. The notion that you don’t have to follow what is popular and that you can constantly take the opportunity and create a new understanding of music and performing. “It could mean standing under one spotlight,” she continued. “It could mean tons of camels and belly-dancing girls. I don’t know. One is not necessarily better than the other. But it is about the artist. It’s about ‘Who’s the artist?’ So in that one moment, you have to take it and give it all you can.” Gibson is just following suit on the secrecy front: When Gaga talked to MTV News last week, she said she wants to surprise her fans at the VMAs. “I’m really very honored and excited to open the show,” Lady Gaga told MTV News. “But I won’t reveal anything; I want it to be a surprise.” From what Gaga and Gibson revealed, the performance sounds like it will be avant garde, much like her 2009 VMA set, when Gaga took the stage for a blood-soaked “Paparazzi” performance . “It will be a continuation of everything I’ve been doing, and it will be exactly what they want,” Gaga said. “I’m pretty good at knowing what my fans want me to do.” The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live Sunday, August 28, from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT, following the Selena Gomez-hosted pre-show at 8. By Christina Garibaldi Lady Gaga Photo: MTV News In only two years, Lady Gaga has become the face of the MTV Video Music Awards , and on Sunday, she will continue to cement her place as a VMA icon . Mother Monster will be opening this year’s big show , and viewers are sure to be both wowed and inspired. “I’m really very honored and excited to open the show,” Lady Gaga told MTV News. “But I won’t reveal anything; I want it to be a surprise.” If it’s anything like Gaga’s 2009 VMA performance of “Paparazzi,” her fans will not be disappointed. “It will be a continuation of everything I’ve been doing, and it will be exactly what they want,” Gaga said of her performance. “I’m pretty good at knowing what my fans want me to do.” Gaga joins a long list of memorable VMA opening acts , including Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, and Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera joining Madonna onstage for a kiss. So, what was Gaga’s reaction to joining this legendary list? “I was just really excited and I was really happy because they asked me after I told them what I wanted to do,” Gaga said. “So it was even more exciting because I knew that it was based off the performance idea and MTV believing in me as an artist and they have, and I appreciate that, from the beginning. They always allowed me to do my version of pop music and not someone else’s.” While we won’t see what Gaga has in store until Sunday night, she said she hopes the audience is “moved.” The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live Sunday from Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT, following the Selena Gomez-hosted pre-show at 8. September 28, 2009. The day I’ll never forget. I met my idol, inspiration, and favourite singer, Justin Bieber. It all started when my friend entered the contest at 91.5 The Beat. She even assumed she  wouldn’t  win, but one day, she got the call saying she won! 2 minutes later she called my house and was basically screaming asking me, “Will you come meet Justin Bieber with me?! I just won the contest!” I screamed and ran around the house, and I yelled YES. Of course, we got to meet him on a school day, which means I got to miss school just to meet him. It was awesome. Now me and her can both say we’ve met our inspiration, we have our picture with him, and I have his autograph. His arm was around me, probably the best minute of my life. He even got to talk to us for a bit & listen to him without screaming fans all around. On 3rd December 2010,  @markmeets  tweeted that Justin’s London book signing was rescheduled for 5th December. I was lucky that I wasn’t at school that day, so I was able to quickly go on the website and get passes. It was a big hassle because we already had Jingle Bell Ball tickets for that day, and ended up having to resell them for a loss. And it was due to snow on the day of the signing. I was so excited that I didn’t care. I arrived at the nightclub place where the signing would be held with my sisters and two friends at about 10 am. It was supposed to start at 2:30, but we weren’t allowed in until 4. It was  absolutely  freezing but I kept saying to myself, “it’ll be worth it. You’re gonna meet Bieber!”. Then these people from Daybreak came up to us and interviewed my sister for the morning news .   The HMV workers led us to this dark room with a huge screen where they were playing JB music videos, where we were given wristbands.  We were left there for around an hour, until we started being called up into the room where Justin was, by wristband colour.  Nervously and excitedly, we were led up a dark staircase. I expected to see Justin by a table, actually signing the books by hand, but there was no actual signing. Then I saw him in the flesh. I had seen him once before at the Summertime Ball but that had been miles away. I started to cry and become kind of paralysed. He was standing behind this backdrop screen with a giant camera in front, ready to take the photos, looking effortlessly amazing, as usual. He flipped his hair, and I nearly fainted.   From that onwards it kind of went downhill. Me and my sisters and friend got separated, because the signing was so rushed (they needed to do photos with 750 people) and had to go in different photos. I had wanted to stand next to Justin, because then you can talk to him briefly and even get a hug, but I was shoved at the edge. Within 2 seconds, the photo was over and I was out of the meet and greet room.   It was a positive and negative experience. On the plus side, I got to see Justin close up, and I got an allegedly signed by him copy of First Step 2 Forever, plus he spoke to both my sisters and one of my friends. Thanks Justin. Sugarland Plan Indiana State Fair Memorial

Band sends out prayers for ‘peace and healing’ families of five killed and dozens injured in Saturday’s stage collapse. By Jocelyn Vena Sugarland’s Jennifer Nettles (file) Photo: Rick Diamond/ Getty Images Following last Saturday’s stage collapse before their scheduled concert at the Indiana State Fair , Sugarland have announced they will hold a memorial to honor the five killed and dozens injured in the accident. The band announced on their website that they are working on a memorial. “We are in the process of planning a private memorial in Indiana to honor those fans who died. We would first like to hold space so that their families can have time to go through their own services and memorials. Until that time we are holding vigil for them,” they wrote. “We join them on their mourning benches. And we stand in the gap asking God to offer them peace and healing. For those suffering from injury we hold you up with prayers for complete healing of your own.” In addition to their plans to honor those lost and injured, Sugarland also announced they will resume their tour later this week. “We are also addressing our own specific healing,” the statement continues. “Our road family experienced its traumas together. While we all scattered to our given families for their comfort, the trauma we experienced together binds us in a unique way that we share only with each other, and those who were there. There is healing in our being together. There is healing in our working together. For this reason we are planning to get back on the road this weekend, beginning with our scheduled show in Albuquerque this Thursday, August 18th. The emotions have us yearning to be close to each other immediately. The logistics have us needing to replace all of our instruments and equipment. (The set is a loss that is insignificant in light of the tragedy.)” A memorial service was held on Monday at the fairgrounds where the accident took place. According to USAToday.com , 500 people attended the service, including Governor Mitch Daniels. The website for the fair, which reopened on Monday, announced that some shows, like the Train/Maroon 5 show, have been moved elsewhere on site, while Janet Jackson’s and Lady Antebellum’s performances have been canceled all together.
