Is Nicki Minaj A Good Fit For Britney Spears’ Tour? Experts Weigh In

‘If people are going mainly for Britney, they will be excited to see Nicki as well and vice versa,’ one insider tells MTV News. By Jocelyn Vena Nicki Minaj and Britney Spears Photo: Getty Images After lots of rumors, it was officially announced Tuesday (April 12) that Britney Spears would be bringing along Nicki Minaj (as well as up-and-comers Nervo and Jessie and the Toyboys) on her Femme Fatale tour, kicking off this summer. The Spears/Minaj matchup may not initially make sense, given their very different styles, but according to industry insiders who work on booking talent for venues throughout the country, this really is a match made in heaven. “Bringing [together] two genres of music — one icon and one rising icon — is great for the music business. The combination of Britney Spears and Nicki Minaj on tour together is great for the music industry [and] shows its growing diversity,” Matt Levine of Brandsway Creative, a branding and marketing group in New York City, explained to MTV News. “It gives concertgoers the opportunity to see two independently creative females excelling in their craft and showcasing their talent.” Dawn M. Britt, the director of public relations for the Venetian and Palazzo hotels in Las Vegas, said seeing these ladies on tour together screams girl power. “Both Britney and Nicki give off a very ‘girl power’ attitude, and combining the Femme Fatale and Barbie themes is a smart marketing tool with the all-female tour,” Britt explained. ” … Nicki is a mainstream rapper and collaborates with a lot of pop artists . Their audiences overlap enough that if people are going mainly for Britney, they will be excited to see Nicki as well and vice versa.” Britt said this tour makes tons of sense as it combines “two of the biggest names in music right now. Britney is a legend and in the midst of a huge comeback right now with her new Femme Fatale CD,” she said. “Her recent performance in Vegas was a huge success and really got people excited for the tour. Nicki has been making a name for herself the last few years and is in high demand for collaborations and appearances.” Gary Bongiovanni, editor in chief of Pollstar, explained that Nicki is a good fit for the tour since “that tour likely needs a strong support act, and Nicki is not a bad choice. Options at this late date had to be limited.” He added that since Spears is launching a new phase of her career, “Fan response on an act like Britney … is always a question mark until you put the first shows on sale and the public answers the demand-level question with their wallets.” What do you think of the Britney/Nicki combo? Young Jeezy Drops TM 103 Track ‘Ballin’,’ Featuring Lil Wayne

Song’s arrival could mean long-delayed album is on the way. By Alvin Blanco Young Jeezy Photo: Prince Williams/Getty Images Despite maintaining a low profile lately, Atlanta rapper Young Jeezy is still hard at work. On Tuesday (April 12), the Snowman released “Ballin’,” featuring Lil Wayne, the latest single from his repeatedly delayed fourth album TM 103. On Monday, Jeezy released a preview video that showed him in the studio working on the Lil Lody-produced track. The rapper is seen mixing the song while it plays in the background of the minute-long clip, which announced at the end that the full song would be available Monday at 1:03 p.m. “Ballin’ ” arrived as promised, available for download via Jeezy’s USDA2Day.com website. “Still ballin’ like a mother—-er, tell ’em that/ Three platinum chains to match my platinum plaques,” Jeezy raps over the rugged, bass-heavy beat at the start of the second verse. Weezy closes the song out with his third verse. Last year, Jeezy released “Lose My Mind,” featuring Plies, which was supposed to be the lead single from TM 103, the follow-up album to 2008’s The Recession. Another pair of singles — “All White Everything,” featuring Yo Gotti, and “Jizzle,” featuring Lil Jon — were also released, but the announced September 28 due date for the album came and went with no new record in stores or iTunes. “It took me damn near a year and some change to make this album,” Jeezy told MTV News. “Me and Shawty Redd went back to the … basics. We got in this n—a basement, I moved in with that n—a for three months to finish this album,” Jeezy said. “No nothing, no clubbing. Just straight grinding, all day and all night.” Besides getting his album ready for release, this past weekend Jeezy officially announced the signing of Gary, Indiana, rapper Freddie Gibbs to his CTE label . Nicki Minaj’s Top Pop Moments Before Britney Spears Tour

Here’s a look at Nicki’s journey from street star to pop sensation. By James Montgomery Nicki Minaj and Britney Spears Photo: Getty Images On Tuesday (April 12), after weeks of speculation, it was revealed that Nicki Minaj would be joining Britney Spears’ upcoming Femme Fatale tour , replacing Enrique Iglesias, who dropped off the high-profile trek earlier this month. It’s a big look for Nicki, though, to some, her addition was a bit of a head-scratcher. After all, she’s certainly not the traditional Britney opener , and with just one album (and some mixtapes) under her belt, it remains to be seen how Minaj’s live show will translate to Spears’ massive stage. Oh, and then there’s the very legitimate question of whether the two artists’ audiences are even aware of the other’s existence. Still, at this point, Minaj has done just about everything to prove those naysayers wrong — hit singles and platinum-plus albums tend to have that effect — and over the course of roughly three years, she’s risen from street-DVD sensation to go-to guest star and, finally, to full-fledged pop sensation — and the Femme Fatale tour is proof. So, as she prepares to head out on the road with Britney, let’s take a look back at that transformation. Here are Nicki Minaj’s top pop moments. Mariah Carey’s “Up Out My Face” video shoot , February 8, 2010 : Nicki took her first step toward pop success when she filmed a video for the “Face” remix with Carey, an artist who knows a thing or two (hundred million) about that very topic. Other high-profile cameos would follow — most notably, her turn in Usher’s “Lil Freak” video — but the march to the mainstream began with this candy-coated clip. MTV Video Music Awards Pre-Show performance , September 12, 2010 : Minaj chose an appropriately huge stage on which to make her solo TV debut &#8212 the 2010 VMA Pre-Show &#8212 and she made the most of it, dressing like a DayGlo cosmonaut (with a pink beehive) and teaming with the Black Eyed Peas’ will.i.am for a delightfully over-the-top take on “Check It Out.” With her proper first album less than two months away, the VMAs served not only as a launching pad, but as a warning that big things were on the horizon. Pink Friday debuts at #2 , December 1, 2010 : She couldn’t quite make it to #1 (at least not yet) — after all, she had Kanye West’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy to contend with — but Minaj’s runner-up bow wasn’t a failure by any stretch. With sales of more than 375,000, Pink Friday posted the highest first-week numbers of any female MC since Lauryn Hill’s classic The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill all the way back in 1998. “Moment 4 Life” video premiere , January 27, 2011 : With Pink Friday still riding high on the charts, Minaj gave it a charge with the premiere of her biggest, poppiest video to date: “Moment 4 Life,” a gilded, glamorous fairy tale brought to life. Co-starring her Twitter beau Drake (and, of course, Minaj herself as a fairy godmother), it’s pure pop bliss in every sense of the word. Not surprisingly, the song is her highest-charting top 40 track to date. “Saturday Night Live” performance , January 30, 2011″ : As a New York native, Minaj called her “SNL” performance “monumental.” As an artist making that final push toward crossover success, the gig was equally important. Not only did she wow audiences with her onstage actions, but her cameos in a pair of sketches — most notably, Digital Short “The Creep” with the Lonely Island — proved that she could provide the laughs too. Pink Friday Finally Reaches #1 , February 9, 2011 : Building off that “SNL” success, in February &#8212 more than three months after it was first released &#8212 Pink Friday finally made it to #1 on the Billboard albums chart, and, in the process, cemented Minaj’s status as a star with staying power. Up until landing the Britney tour, this remained Nicki’s poppiest moment to date — though who knows what will happen when she hits the road with Ms. Spears? Britney Spears To Tour With Nicki Minaj

Singer confirms the rumors about her Femme Fatale lineup on her website Tuesday. By Jocelyn Vena Britney Spears Photo: Max Morse/Getty Images After weeks of speculation, Nicki Minaj has at last been confirmed as the replacement for Enrique Iglesias on Britney Spears’ upcoming Femme Fatale tour . The ladies will also be joined by Jessie and the Toy Boys and Nervo on the all-female lineup. “This is the Femme Fatale tour, and I’m thrilled to have the hot Nicki Minaj join me and Jessie and the Toy Boys and Nervo will get everyone on the dance floor,” Spears said on her website . “Can’t wait to take the Femme Fatales on the road.” Minaj will join Spears after she wraps up touring with Lil Wayne on his I Am Still Music tour, which finishes up May 1 in New Jersey. Last week, Minaj told to MTV News that she was in talks to join the tour, after rumors began swirling that the sassy Queens MC would be hitting the road with the veteran pop superstar. The tour kicks off on June 16 in Sacramento and will run for 26 dates through North America, winding up on August 13 in Toronto. Select tickets go on sale on April 30. Spears manager Larry Rudolph, told MTV News that Britney’s tour will have the post-apocalyptic vibe that’s been present in her recent live sets and the video for “Till the World Ends.” “The way we come up with a concept for a show like this is we sit with Britney, she talks to us about what she’s interested in and what excites her,” Rudolph explained. “We start with the songs on the album; we start with coming up with general, broad concepts. She tells us what interests her and excites her, and from there, we have [the input of music tour director] Jamie King and [choreographer] Brian Friedman.” What do you think of the Nicki/Britney match-up? Britney Spears’ Femme Fatale Debuts At #1 On Billboard

Wiz Khalifa’s Rolling Papers comes in at #2. By Gil Kaufman Britney Spears Photo: Jive Make it an even half dozen. With the chart-topping bow next week of Femme Fatale, Britney Spears will notch her sixth Billboard 200 #1 debut thanks to first-week sales of 276,000 for the pop diva’s seventh studio collection. Though it’s nearly half the 505,000 in sales the singer put up with 2008’s Circus, the debut easily outpaces the week’s #2 showing by Wiz Khalifa, whose Rolling Papers moved 197,000, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan. Among the other debuts in the top 10 are the physical release of Radiohead’s latest, King of Limbs (#6, 69,000), Snoop Dogg ‘s Doggumentary (#8, 50,000) and Mary Mary ‘s Something Big, which rounds out the new titles at #10 on sales of 42,000. ‘Dancing With The Stars’ Results: Wendy Williams Foxtrots Home

Talk-show host jokes about her lack of rhythm ‘despite stereotypes,’ after getting eliminated. By Kelley L. Carter Wendy Williams and Tony Dovolani Photo: ABC There wasn’t much of a surprise on Tuesday night’s elimination show of “Dancing With the Stars.” In spite of all of the chatter about Kirstie Alley’s quick fall on the dance floor on Monday night’s show — the judges thought she and her partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy recovered quite nicely — it was talk-show host Wendy Williams who was given the boot. This week, the celebrities were challenged to dance to a song that told a story about themselves, and Williams chose a foxtrot to “Last Night a DJ Saved My Life,” connecting it to her early dreams of having a radio career. The judges told her on Monday night that she lacked fluidity and thought that she took a step backwards from the previous week’s performance. The funnywoman (whose partner was Tony Dovolani) went out with a bit of graceful humor, joking about her 15-point score and her lack of natural rhythm. “I’m probably the busiest person in terms of flying back and forth. In addition to that, I have a marriage and a child and a litany of other things to hold together,” Williams said, talking up her hectic schedule with taping her talk show in New York while also dancing in Los Angeles, where the ABC reality show tapes. “But this has been a wonderful opportunity.” She also thanked Dovolani “for teaching me how to dance. Despite stereotypes, this is one black girl who can’t do the running man! I got to do this in front of millions of people! With that said, I’ll do the rest of the talking tomorrow, on ‘The Wendy Williams Show’!” Related Photos The 2011 ‘Dancing With The Stars’ Cast’s Movie Past ‘Dancing With The Stars’ Season 12 Cast Revealed

Britney Spears Throws Sweaty Dance Party In ‘Till The World Ends’ Video

The pop star escapes the apocalypse in Ray Kay-directed clip. By Jocelyn Vena Britney Spears in her “Till The World Ends” video Photo: Jive Remember when Britney Spears threw a sweaty, dirty dance party in an unfinished apartment and slinked around wearing underwear over her pants in 2001’s “Slave 4 U”? Well, the party is back, and it’s as dirty as ever in the clip for “Till the World Ends,” which premiered on Wednesday (April 6). As befits the song title, the video takes place during the apocalypse, on December 21, 2012. Spears takes her party underground, beneath the sewers of an anonymous big city, somewhere in the world. As the buildings crumble around them and fiery masses fall from the sky, all Britney and her pals want to do is flirt and dance. The video was shot in Los Angeles in mid-March, and though Spears complained to us about the “grimy and gross” shooting conditions in a dank warehouse, her energy never wavers in the finished product. Directed by Ray Kay (Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga) and choreographed by Brian Friedman (who has worked with Britney throughout this current Femme Fatale era), the director’s cut of the video is a sexy mash-up of Spears doing what she does best: groping half-naked guys, giving the camera bedroom eyes and being sassy in a number of leather jackets and skintight bodysuits, including a red one that seems to be a nod to her Martian Queen catsuit from “Oops!… I Did It Again.” She smiles big and bright for the camera, and then looks sultry as she prances around and tosses her hair about like some dystopian siren. A closer look at her frisky pop-and-lock moves will be further explored in a choreography cut of the video to be released later on. While Spears spends much of the party seemingly happy to be away from the dangers of the apocalypse outside, eventually she emerges to a world that didn’t end, smiling as the sun bathes her in its warm glow. Britney Spears: The Origin Of The Super-Pop Species

With her new album sitting at #1, Bigger Than the Sound looks at Britney’s unprecedented career. By James Montgomery Britney Spears Photo: Getty Images By the time you read this, Britney Spears will have scored her sixth #1 debut with Femme Fatale, her latest installment of supersonic, stealth-fighter pop, a collection of songs equipped with laser-guided, heat-seeking hit missiles. In fact, Femme Fatale is more like an F-22 Raptor than an album. Maybe I shouldn’t be amazed that Brit finds herself atop the charts once again, but don’t we live in austere times? Aren’t Odd Future the only thing that matters these days? I’m only sort of kidding. Because, frankly, each and every time Britney lands another #1, it’s kind of like we’ve traveled through a wormhole and ended up in 1999, a time when the industry was still flush with cash and Lou Pearlman still lumbered the land. This was only 12 years ago, but it may as well have been 12 million. These days, we still have plenty of pure pop stars, though none of them are quite like Britney. Lady Gaga is into performance art. Katy Perry is the California Gurl. Pink is the punky older cousin with a ton of tattoos. As is often the case with evolution, they have each developed specialized traits in order to survive. Britney is, in a lot of ways, the origin of the species (for simplicity’s sake, I’m just ignoring Madonna, who basically did everything before any of this generation’s stars were even teething). She was — and, I suppose, still is — the music industry’s first attempt to promote a star that is everything to everyone. And each and every time she surfaces with a new album in tow, it signals the return of pop’s Mesozoic era. For all intents and purposes, she may spend her time between albums trapped in amber, waiting to have her DNA extracted by some scientist. This is by no means meant to come across as a slight against Spears. I fully understand why her fans love her the way they do, not to mention the fact that Femme Fatale is a heck of a pop record, a starry shadowbox of the coolest sounds you’re likely to hear all year. It’s more me simply marveling at the way she operates — in the cockpit of a high-powered fighter, making glossy, big-budget videos , putting on full-scale pop spectacles . There truly, honestly isn’t anyone else like her. We should take this opportunity to appreciate what Britney Spears — and her album — represent. She is the last super-pop star left standing. There was a time when everyone did things this way; now it’s her and her alone. Spears is still everything to everyone, in a time when all we hear about are “niche markets” and “splintered genres,” and for that alone, the success of Femme Fatale is noteworthy. Can she continue to survive among her more specialized peers? She’s certainly earned the right to, though one gets the feeling she’s probably not too worried about that fact. The thing about being the first is that there isn’t really anything — or anyone — to compete against. So let others sweat the small stuff; Britney’s only concerned with being Britney. Now and forever. What do you think is the secret to Britney’s success? Let us know in the comments! Related Videos Britney Spears: I Am The Femme Fatale
