REVIEW: Can The Joneses Keep Up with Its Own Premise?

A fantastic concept that frays under the rigors of narrative convention, the premise of The Joneses — a pre-fab family unit is hired to infiltrate and market to an affluent suburban neighborhood — sold half of Hollywood, attracting bucks and talent to the table. Yet as pointed out by David Foster Wallace, the man who envisioned entire calendar years being branded (“The Year of the Perdue Wonder Chicken” will never stop making me laugh), the obviousness of the target requires a more expansive execution: “We already ‘know’ U.S. culture is materialistic,” he said. “This diagnosis can be done in about two lines. [The] engaging and artistically real [question is] how is it that we as human beings still have the capacity for joy, charity, genuine connections, for stuff that doesn’t have a price?” First-time writer/director Derrick Borte does make a bleakly viable case for an extreme strain of our materialism, but the film’s attempt at a humanistic antidote diffuses its intriguing chemistry for the worse.

Justin Timberlake Betraying, Torturing Jessica Biel?

One rarely has any clue whether to believe tabloid cover stories about love triangles, especially as they pertain to Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel. But their notoriously on-and-off relationship is once again in the news, and supposedly on the rocks, as the singer cozies up to ex Cameron Diaz! At least that’s what Us Weekly alleges is going on as they film the romantic comedy Bad Teacher , leaving Biel out in the cold, bitter and betrayed. Who knows if any of that’s true, but it makes for good gossip! Rumors that he and Cameron flirt openly on the Valencia, Calif., set coincide with the latest report of Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel splitting up. A source says his public flirting with Diaz is deliberate, too. “He tortured Jess by taking this role, and they are reaching a breaking point,” a pal of Biel said. “The truth is, I don’t know if they can survive this.” So … they’re still on? Didn’t be betray her? We’re confused. Shooting the film is just like “old times” for Timberlake and Diaz, who dated for years before he began romancing Biel. We’re still pulling for Britney . There’s “lots of laughing, making fun of each other, kidding around off camera. She’s sassy with him … and slick, prancing around in tight clothes.” Those actresses in tight clothes … there’s a cover story. It may not seem noteworthy, but Us says Biel and Timberlake have been having “huge arguments” and Jessica gotten more “territorial and upset.” In turn, Timberlake gets turned off and turns more toward Diaz. Worst of all, “when [Jessica] is not around, he’ll make fun of her to his friends.” The nerve of that jerk .

Lil Wayne’s ‘I’m Single’ Video Premieres On MTV2 Sunday!

Scoob Doo-helmed clip is for song from Wayne’s No Ceilings mixtape. By Shaheem Reid Lil Wayne and Scoob Doo Photo: Nino Brown Scoob Scorsese is getting ready to debut his biggest movie yet. DJ Scoob Doo has spun records at parties and clubs, made mixtapes and stepped out as Lil Wayne’s cinematographer in the DVD reality series “The Nino Brown Story.” Now he’s taking his next step: video director. Scoob helmed the video for Lil Wayne’s “I’m Single” from the No Ceilings mixtape , and it officially debuts Sunday on MTV2’s “Sucker Free Sunday Countdown” and MTV Jams. “The thing with Wayne, if you don’t get a chance to see how hard he worked on the record, and the wit and pizzazz he had with it, he wants to give you that same feeling the first time you hear it,” Scoob told MTV News. “Which he does audio-wise, but him performing it for you in the studio is what really it’s about as far as this video.” In the clip for “I’m Single,” we see Wayne play and perform the song for the first time. “I was there, Mack Maine was there,” Scoob says. “Mally G was there. This is the first time he’s playing it. It’s history. When you hear a song for the first time, you always remember where you was when you heard it. Even if the cameras wasn’t there to capture it, that’s exactly what it would be. That’s the great thing about the video, it’s authentic. It’s your front seat. Enjoy your seat!” The short also has a storyline element. “[Wayne’s girl was made that] he didn’t make it home in time,” Scoob explained of the plot. “He stayed out all night. That’s the idea I got with the song. It brought me back to watching the film ‘A Thin Line Between Love and Hate.’ Me growing up watching Martin [Lawrence], it was epic, it was a funny movie. I loved the cinematography in it. [Writing the script for the video], that was me being a fan of that movie and good music and putting it together.” The video also stars models Natasha and Tammy Torres (from Wayne’s “Mrs. Officer” video). “Tammy Torres is the mistress,” Scoob detailed. “She’s the reason Wayne didn’t make it home — the reason why he’s single for the night. Natasha is the one who has heartache. She’s scorned to the point where she turns crazy and deranged. You don’t wanna cross that thin line.” Scoob said people shouldn’t be surprised to see him in the director chair. It’s something he’s been pursuing for quite some time, he’s just taking the opportunity now. “It’s not something I would call a transition,” he said. “This is something I’ve been doing for a while. I’m excited that we’re making a big deal out of it because I’ve been working hard. I didn’t have to change my format of what I’ve been doing. The people that know me, they are so excited right now. This is exactly what they’ve been campaigning and promoting for years.” The clip is one of many that Wayne filmed before he began his prison sentence on weapons charges last month. Scoob has “The Nino Brown Story Part III” coming up, as well as the Birdman’s “The Godfather” DVD — there’s a video for Birdman’s “Bigger Than Life” that Scoob directed in the can as well. Don’t miss Lil Wayne’s “I’m Single” video, premiering Sunday on MTV2’s “Sucker Free” and MTV Jams! “Sucker Free” airs at 12 p.m. ET. Is Seth Rogen’s Green Hornet the Next Batman and Robin?

Remember when you heard about Seth Rogen’s plan to co-write and star in The Green Hornet and thought, “Man, that’s a terrible idea!” Then when the project added Cameron Diaz and Christoph Waltz, you wondered aloud, “What kind of fever dream is this thing going to be?” And, of course, you got the answer when Michel Gondry took over the reigns from chopsocky director Stephen Chow: The Green Hornet was one gloriously hot mess. And now that the film is in the can, it looks like even its backers at Sony might agree.

Conan O’Brien’s Move To TBS Embraced By George Lopez

‘I am completely, 100 percent onboard with this move,’ Lopez says on his TBS show. By Gil Kaufman George Lopez Photo: Frazer Harrison/ Getty Images What a difference a few months and a basic cable outlet make. Unlike Conan O’Brien, who decided to walk when NBC asked him to push his show back to make room for the return of Jay Leno to “The Tonight Show,” comedian George Lopez could not be more psyched that his TBS show “Lopez Tonight” will be bumped an hour to accommodate O’Brien’s new talker in the fall. “If you haven’t heard by now, Conan O’Brien will be joining us on late night on TBS. Welcome! Welcome!,” Lopez gushed at the beginning of Monday night’s show. “I want to say that I am completely, 100 percent onboard with this move.

Chace Crawford Steps Out Of ‘Footloose’ Remake

‘Gossip Girl’ scheduling conflicts are reportedly to blame. By Jocelyn Vena Chace Crawford Photo: John Shearer/WireImage After replacing Zac Efron in the “Footloose” remake , Chace Crawford has announced he will no longer be filling Kevin Bacon’s dancing shoes. His rep confirmed that the “Gossip Girl” star has decided not to move forward with the project. According to Entertainment Weekly, the studio may now go on a nationwide hunt for an unknown to play the part. Sources say Crawford’s “Gossip Girl” schedule got in the way of the movie’s shooting schedule. The show is scheduled to start production for its next season this July, just when Paramount had wanted to start filming the movie. While the film still lacks a leading man, “Dancing With the Stars” pro Julianne Hough is still expected to play the film’s female lead, which was played by Lori Singer in the original flick. Leading men issues haven’t been the shakeups plaguing the film. “High School Musical” director Kenny Ortega was set to helm the musical, but dropped out last year. There have been screenplay problems too: A version penned by Susannah Grant, who wrote “Erin Brockovich,” was later replaced by one written by “Hustle & Flow” director Craig Brewer. EW reports that the studio would also like Brewer to direct, but previous commitments may make that impossible. Initially, Crawford seemed excited by the prospect of starring in “Footloose,” telling MTV News last year that he hoped he had the skills to pay the bills. “I hope so, right? I got the part,” Crawford said. “I hope they know I can dance. I don’t know. It’s a fun script, and actually stepping out of my shell and doing the dancing thing is probably the most exciting part.” Who do you think should star in the “Footloose” remake? Tell us in the comments!
