NY Times Op-Ed Writer’s Muddled Logic: Money Not Paid in Taxes a Gift from Government

It’s a really skewed view of the relationship between citizens and the government – that anything you earn and get to keep by not paying to the government in the form of taxes is a show of benevolence from the government. But that’s apparently the view of Richard H. Thaler, professor at the University of Chicago . In the Sept. 26 New York Times , Thaler, declares that tax cuts are a gift in his op-ed “What the Rich Don’t Need.” “WANT to give affluent households a present worth $700 billion over the next decade?” Thaler wrote. “In a period of high unemployment and fiscal austerity, this idea may seem laughable. Amazingly, though, it is getting traction in Washington . I am referring, of course, to the current debate about whether to extend all, or just some, of the tax cuts of President George W. Bush – cuts that are due to expire at year-end. They’re expiring because the only way they could be enacted initially was by pretending that they were temporary.” Video Below Fold This caught the eye of CNBC’s Joe Kernen, the co-host of “Squawk Box.” On the Sept. 27 broadcast of his show, Kernen pointed out the flaw in that logic. “Over the weekend, I was reading in The New York Times – it was one of their professors that writes. I forget the guy’s name. I always disagree with him,” Kernen said. “[H]e talks about it as a $700-billion gift to the rich. And I just have a problem when they look at – OK, so they’re using the Clinton tax levels as the standard of where we are. And anything diverges from that is a gift, even though it’s money you earned. It’s a gift back to you.” Kernen questioned why the talking point used by tax cut opponents is always based on what tax levels were during the Clinton presidency and why it is a view that a certain percentage of what taxpayers keep is gift to the them. “Let’s go back to pre-, before Reagan began was around, when it was 70 percent. Anything less than 70 percent, is it a gift to the taxpayer?” he continued. “[D]oes it start at ‘you pay 100 percent to us and anything we let you keep after that is a gift’ or does it start at ‘0 percent and anything you charge me prove that you need to spend that.’ Why don’t you do it that way? Prove that you need anything above zero percent. Show me you’re not going to waste it and then prove you can do it.” Fill-in co-host Michelle Caruso-Cabrera, author of the forthcoming book “You Know I’m Right: More Prosperity, Less Government” summed it up succinctly by explaining what the intended relationship of government and the citizens is. “They work for us,” Caruso-Cabrera said. “We don’t work for them.”

Drake Says He’s Debating ‘Fancy’ Video Re-shoot

Drizzy tells MTV News he has a ‘way better idea’ for the clip, but may start fresh with ‘Show Me a Good Time.’ By Jayson Rodriguez Drake Photo: MTV News The last time Drake changed his mind about a music video at the last minute, his original idea for a sensitive clip for the ladies turned into the over-the-top “Best I Ever Had” visual directed by Kanye West . This time, however, the Toronto lyricist insists his next video will be great, regardless of his temporary indecisiveness. He’s debating whether to reshoot “Fancy” or commission a clip for his next single, “Show Me a Good Time.” “We shot ‘Fancy,’ and to be honest with you, it was done and I watched it and I just had a way better idea,” Drake told MTV News earlier this week. “And that’s why the video hasn’t come out yet. And to follow up ‘Find Your Love’ and ‘Miss Me,’ I really wanted to do something different, conceptually, and so I had this amazing idea and now I’m debating whether I should reshoot it or go straight to ‘Show Me a Good Time.’ But there should be a new Drake visual in the next little bit.” The Thank Me Later star said the “Fancy” clip was directed by Anthony Mandler (Jay-Z, Mary J. Blige, Rihanna), who also helmed “Over,” “Find Your Love” and “Miss Me” for Drake. According to Drake, the two are deciding what to do next, and the rapper is enthusiastic about the forthcoming production, regardless of which song they decide to shoot. “It’s something to look forward to,” he said. “I’m excited by it.” Next up, Drake will appear in Rick Ross’ “Aston Martin Music” video. Ross talked to MTV News about the clip earlier this month, saying the visual was “dope.” “We were just going over treatments for ‘Aston Martin Music,’ ” Ross said. “We’re going to shoot the dope version: Drake’s going to be rapping his verse and Chrisette [Michele will be there] and most definitely me. We’re just finalizing all the details. We should be shooting that hopefully next week, so look for that real soon.” Related Videos MTV News Extended Play: Drake Related Artists Drake

Ne-Yo Calls Potential Lady Gaga Collabo ‘Intriguing’

‘Would I jump into her world? Would I pull her into mine?’ he says to MTV News. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Tim Kash Ne-Yo Photo: Kim Schier / MTV News While Lady Gaga has worked with everyone from RedOne and Akon to Teddy Riley and Rodney Jerkins, she sticks to a pretty tight-knit group of collaborators when it comes to her albums, including the forthcoming Born This Way. But that doesn’t mean singer/songwriter Ne-Yo hasn’t been trying to get in the studio with the “Bad Romance” songstress. “We’ve been talking to Gaga’s people about some stuff,” he said. “Gaga’s very difficult to get a hold of as of late, for obvious reasons. She’s very busy. We’ve been talking to her people about doing some stuff.” Ne-Yo is best known for working with artists like Rihanna and Beyonc

Nelly And Kelly Rowland ‘Extend The Story’ Of ‘Dilemma’ With ‘Gone’

‘Our chemistry has already proven to be good,’ rapper tells MTV News. By Jayson Rodriguez Kelly Rowland and Nelly Photo: Getty Images The last time Nelly and Kelly Rowland collaborated, they scored a pop smash with their 2002 hit “Dilemma,” which was named one of the most popular songs of the decade by Billboard. Now, eight years later, the duo are reuniting to give it another go, but to hear Nelly explain it, the forthcoming track “Gone” isn’t a sequel to “Dilemma.” Rather, the song, from Nelly’s upcoming release 5.0, is an “update.” “I don’t want to say it’s a sequel. I don’t want to diminish anything with ‘Dilemma’ or have an expectation you can’t live up to when you do that,” Nelly told MTV News. “When you do that type of thing, there’s people who are already, ‘I don’t wanna hear it. It’s supposed to be “Dilemma.” ‘ You already being negative [before] pushing the button! “It’s one of those things were we did reconnect,” he continued. “Our chemistry has already proven to be good, whether it was onstage or in the studio. It was something that we wanted to reconnect with. It was produced by Jim Jonsin. … It’s a cool joint. I think people will get it. It can never be ‘Dilemma,’ but we wanted to extend the story. It’s continuing the story a little bit more, seeing her again.” Before “Gone” hits the airwaves, however, Nelly is riding high off the success of “Just a Dream” cracking the top 10 on the Hot 100 chart. The record, also produced by Jonsin, is Nelly’s return to the charts in the wake of his commercially disappointing last album, 2008’s Brass Knuckles. He credited his fans with the song’s success. “It’s always great when your fans come out and support [you] anytime in your career,” he said about the achievement. “But definitely after 10 years, and when you haven’t been quite on the scene as much as your fans would like you to, but when they do get a glimpse of you and they feel good, it also makes you feel good.” Are you excited to hear Nelly and Kelly’s new track? Taylor Swift’s All-Time Best VMA Moments

Since her debut just two years ago, Taylor Swift has had some memorable appearances at the big show. By Jocelyn Vena Taylor Swift performs at the 2010 VMAs Photo: John Shearer/ Wireimage.com Taylor Swift made a triumphant return to the VMA stage on Sunday night with a new ballad, which may or may not be directed at Kanye West, off her forthcoming October release, Speak Now. Dressed in a strapless, beige dress, Swift spilled her guts and forgave someone for wronging her in the past. This wasn’t Swift’s first time at the VMA rodeo , though. Her beginnings trace all the way back to 2008, when she was nominated for Best New Artist for her unrequited love ballad “Teardrops on My Guitar.” And while Swift wouldn’t end up taking home a Moonman that year, she did get the honor of being a co-host at the pre-show , and went public with her then beau, Joe Jonas. Swift had a pretty easygoing 2008 VMAs compared to what went down the following year. In 2009, she hit the carpet in a stunning, Grecian-draped silver-sparkled dress and won Best Female Video. We all know how that turned out, but she didn’t let it get her down. Mere minutes after accepting the award, she performed her winning song, “You Belong With Me.” Decked out in a hot red dress, exuberantly belting out her hit in a moving subway and on top of a taxi cab in the middle of Manhattan, Swift stood outside the Radio City Music Hall and almost made everyone forget about what happened earlier that night. That brings us to the 2010 VMAs, when Swift once again hit the stage. This time Swift, who was up for Best Female Video again, played her captivating new tune, which still has no official title. In it she sings, “I guess you really did it this time/ Left yourself in your war path/ Lost your balance on a tightrope/ Lost your mind trying to get it back.” While many had hoped West and Swift would take the stage together, it wasn’t to be. Well, there’s always the 2011 VMAs. The Moonmen have all been handed out and the stars have gone home, but there’s plenty of 2010 MTV Video Music Awards news, interviews, behind-the-scenes scoop, party reports and more still to come, so keep it locked on MTVNews.com. Weezer’s ‘Memories’ Video Promises Skateboarding, Silly Hats

Clip featuring the cast of ‘Jackass 3-D’ premieres today at 5 p.m. By Kyle Anderson, with reporting by Matt Elias Weezer’s Rivers Cuomo Photo: Tim Mosenfelder/ Getty Images The lyrics to Weezer’s new single, “Memories” (from their forthcoming eighth album, Hurley ) paint a picture of the band back when they first began playing clubs and trying to scrape together a living on the backs of the songs from their landmark self-titled debut. “I had been married for a few months and had been in school for the semester before that, and basically I had been away from the band and the rock world for a while,” frontman Rivers Cuomo told MTV News. “I was really missing it, and just sitting there alone in my room missing the fans and missing my band, so ‘Memories’ is about getting back in there.” So when they decided to shoot the video — which premieres Thursday (September 9) on MTV, right after an all-new episode of “Jersey Shore” — it’s no wonder the group decided to call some old friends. Those friends? Johnny Knoxville, Wee Man, Chris Pontius, Steve-O and the rest of the crew from “Jackass” (who also happen to have a brand-new movie, “Jackass 3-D,” hitting theaters in October). They got together for what “Jackass” director Jeff Tremaine calls “an old-school skate jam,” featuring a cavalcade of extreme tricks in and around an empty pool. Like most Weezer videos, “Memories” relied on unpredictability. “We’re kind of making it up as we go along, to be honest,” Knoxville told MTV News when we visited the set last month. “We brought funny hats and some Super 8 cameras. I think that’s the video. Are we over-selling it?” With the low-fi cameras and the rapid-fire editing, the “Memories” video closely resembles a DIY skate video from the ’80s — something the guys went for on purpose, starting with the location. “It really is a legendary spot,” Tremaine said. “It made sense once we decided what we were doing. It’s from ‘The Search for Animal Chin,’ a legendary skate video from back in the ’80s — ’87 or ’86 — that the Bones Brigade made. That was Tony Hawk’s team. They filmed in here, and it became an old, classic skate spot.” Don’t miss the premiere of Weezer’s “Memories” video on MTV, Thursday (September 9) at 5 p.m.

Diddy ‘Went Crazy’ For Nelly’s ‘1000 Stacks’

Track from Nelly’s upcoming 5.0 samples B.I.G.’s ‘Everyday Struggle.’ By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Matt Elias Nelly Photo: MTV News Nelly contributed to Biggie’s posthumous album Duets: The Final Chapter on the standout track “Nasty Girl,” but apparently the St. Louis rapper didn’t get enough of the Brooklyn star with that collaboration. For his forthcoming project, 5.0, Nelly sampled the late rapper’s vocals from Biggie’s song “Everyday Struggle” for his own “1000 Stacks.” B.I.G.’s lines “At last, I’m literally loungin’ black/ Sitting back, counting double-digit thousand stacks” will be used as the hook — with Diddy’s blessing, of course. “I did this beat with my man Don Vito and it had this Biggie sample in it, and when I heard it, I was like, whoa,” Nelly told MTV News on the set of his “Just a Dream” video shoot. “It was bananas. I let Puff hear the song. I told him, ‘I got something that I think you’re gonna love, and I think we can smash it out together.’ And he was like, ‘Let me hear it.’ I played it for him and he went crazy. We put it together and it came out crazy. “I feel real honored to be on a B.I. sample,” he added. Nelly is enthusiastic by the positive response to the album’s first two singles, “Just a Dream” and “Tippin’ in Da Club,” especially after the lukewarm reception to his last solo set, 2008’s Brass Knuckles. The former just cracked the Top 10 on Billboard ‘s Digital Songs chart, landing at the #8 slot. “It’s great,” Nelly said. “It’s always great when your fans come out and support [you] any time in your career. But definitely after 10 years, and when you haven’t been quite on the scene as much as your fans would like you to, but when they do get a glimpse of you and they feel good, it also makes you feel good.” Related Artists Nelly Diddy
