‘Yogi Bear’: The Reviews Are In!

Is the 3-D cartoon just for kids and woodland creatures? The critics have differing opinions. By Eric Ditzian Boo Boo (voiced by Justin Timberlake) in “Yogi Bear” In 2010, we have seen standout animated fare like “Toy Story 3” and “How to Train Your Dragon” dominate the box office. Now the year greets its final CGI-assisted children’s tale in “Yogi Bear.” The adaptation of Hanna-Barbera’s classic cartoon about picnic-basket-obsessed talking bears won’t come close to the opening grosses of those earlier Pixar and DreamWorks films. Nor has “Yogi Bear” garnered its predecessors’ rave reviews. Yet Warner Bros.’ “Yogi,” coming weeks after “Tangled” and at the same time as the rather intense PG-rated “Tron: Legacy,” could end up faring better than its rather tepid B.O. tracking predicts. Is “Yogi Bear” the right pick for you this weekend? Find out what the critics are saying and then plan accordingly. The Story “The film’s plot has Yogi [Dan Aykroyd] and Boo Boo [ Justin Timberlake ] helping Ranger Smith (Tom Cavanagh) defend Jellystone from a rapacious mayor (the funny Andrew Daly), who wants to sell off the park’s logging rights to bail out the city budget. The ranger doesn’t want to hear about Yogi’s schemes, of course. He just wants Yogi to act like a bear — rather than water-ski, steal vending machines and build a contrabulous fabtraption of a flying machine for high-tech picnic-grabbing. (The Baskit Nabber 2000, as it’s called, has no seat belts, and its safety information card is just a hand-drawn picture of passengers screaming.)” — Dan Kois, The Washington Post The Comparison to the Cartoon “Those of us who grew up on Yogi Bear cartoons can breathe easy: In his new movie — featuring a 3-D computer-animated Yogi (voiced by Dan Aykroyd) and Boo Boo (voiced by Justin Timberlake) alongside live action actors — our beloved pic-a-nic thief isn’t asked to whore himself by rapping, farting, or dropping pop culture references the way some of his animated brethren have in recent years. … There’s nothing particularly inventive in the plot or grade-school humor, but the movie skates by on the timeless, undemanding charm of watching a tie-wearing bear try to steal people’s lunches.” — Adam Markovitz, Entertainment Weekly The Dissenters “Neither smarter nor dumber than the average family-friendly comedy, ‘Yogi Bear’ is a bland and innocuous small-fry outing that retains a measure of the original Hanna-Barbera cartoon’s charm, though scarcely enough to justify the time, expense and visual-effects trickery it must have taken to inflate an endearing 2D cartoon into a dopey 3D extravaganza. Still, as Fox’s ‘Alvin and the Chipmunks’ pics made abundantly clear, there’s a sizable audience for incongruous pairings of live-action humans and patently computer-generated critters, suggesting a steady stream of guests at Warners’ picnic table through the holidays, and heavy minivan DVD-player rotation.” — Justin Chang, Variety The Dissenters, Part II “The director, Eric Brevig (‘Journey to the Center of the Earth’), probably did everything he could with the simple-minded screenplay, the dumb jokes, and the general tedium. Studio heads probably instructed him to overdo the 3D gimmicks, too. Who knows, maybe they even told him to prevent Anna Faris from being funny, which I wouldn’t have thought was possible. In a way, though, the film is faithful to the old cartoons, in that it’s grating and tiresome and not suitable for anyone over the age of 4. The animation is better, though.” — Eric D. Snider, Cinematical The Bottom Line “This is a cute movie, a kid’s movie, and a rather good one. The computer-generated bears are adorable — it’s come to this: Computer creations can be adorable — and the movie packs a lot of amusing incidents into a nice, trim 79-minute package. … For single adults, there’s no reason to see it, unless you’re a Yogi Bear completist. But adults with children, who are used to getting bored out of their skulls with children’s fare, may find in this a refreshing and politically charged change of pace.” — Mick LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle Check out everything we’ve got on “Tron: Legacy.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Justin Bieber Is MTV News’ #3 Man Of The Year

In 2010, the pop star cleans up at awards shows, causes worldwide pandemonium — and turns 16. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber Photo: Michael Caulfield/AMA2010/Getty/DCP Justin Bieber seemingly did it all in 2010. He sold out concerts, filmed a movie, released two albums and set girls hearts aflutter — all in the span of 12 months. Not only is he arguably the biggest pop star in the world, he’s also pals with some of hip-hop’s biggest names (just ask Drake, Ludacris and Kanye West if you don’t believe us), and he chills with some of the prettiest girls in the game thanks to friendships with ladies like Kim Kardashian, Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez. (They’re more than just pretty faces, but you can still check out photos of our Men and Women of 2010!) This really is Justin Bieber’s world, and we’re all just living in it. For a kid from a small town in Canada, Bieber’s meteoric rise to fame from Internet sensation to bona fide musical superstar may have seemed fast, but let’s face it: Bieber is the real deal. 2010 Highlights : Justin Bieber kicked off 2010 with his smash single “Baby.” He also showed his charitable side appearing on BET’s “SOS: Help for Haiti” telethon and lending his voice to the “We Are the World” remake . He was also a presenter at the Grammy Awards alongside Ke$ha. Bieber then went bowling with Drake and Ludacris in his “Baby” video and would later date the clip’s leading lady, Jasmine Villegas . In February, Justin caused hysteria in Paris during a trip to Europe, and then in March, he turned sweet 16, collaborated with Sean Kingston on the track “Eeenie Meenie” and had Aziz Ansari mock him in a Funny or Die clip he thought was “hilarious.” He also released his sophomore album, My World 2.0, which he promised would be “a lot of fun.” Bieber became the subject of his own “Diary” special in late March, released his video for “Never Let You Go” and made an appearance at the Teen Choice Awards. He kicked off April by taking over Funny or Die , where he joked, “I’m a star. I do what stars do. I ride on yachts. I autograph lady lumps.” That same month, Bieber once again showed his funny side on “Saturday Night Live,” where he was the night’s musical guest. He sat down with MTV News and thanked his fans for making him a constant Twitter trend . He shook up New Zealand and Australia, causing more fan hysteria, and by May, his fans were threatening the life of Kim Kardashian just for taking a Twitpic with him! In June, he hooked up with Jaden Smith for the “Karate Kid” track “Never Say Never.” He was nominated for the Teen Choice Awards and hung out with his mentor Usher in the “Somebody to Love” video . That same month, Bieber was a big winner at the Much Music Awards and kicked off his first-ever headlining tour . The second half of 2010 was just as busy for the star. In July, he and Lady Gaga battled it out for YouTube supremacy and announced he’d be on “CSI” and releasing a book . (He followed through on all those promises by year’s end.) By the end of August, Kanye West’s remix of “Runaway Love” hit the world, and it was announced that Bieber would be performing at the VMAs. He also filmed the concert portions of his 3-D movie at Madison Square Garden. JB hit the stage at the VMAs in September and even took home his first-ever Moonman . At the show, he shared with MTV News that “girlfriends are trouble.” He made his cameo on “CSI” and premiered his video for “U Smile,” and then in October, he revealed the name of his 3-D flick — “Never Say Never” — as well as the first trailer for the movie . In November, he released his book and his My Worlds Acoustic album and took home a few American Music Awards . And that brings us to December, when he sat down with Barbara Walters , made Google’s Zeitgeist list and went out for pancakes with Selena Gomez . If doing all that in 12 months isn’t reason enough to make Justin Bieber our #3 Man of the Year, then we’re not sure what can. We’ll be rolling out our Top Five Men and Women of 2010 all week, until we unveil MTV News’ Man and Woman of the Year on Friday. As always, we want to know what you think, so share your picks in the comments below! Related Videos Men And Women Of The Year 2010 Related Photos The Men & Women Of 2010

Can Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly Top Jack Black and Jason Segel’s ‘Little Drummer Boy’ Duet?

Last week, comedy icons Jason Segel and Jack Black sat down at the ol’ Black family piano to duet on the holiday classic “Little Drummer Boy,” and we here at Movieline HQ couldn’t help but wonder if they out Bing Crosby and David Bowie’d Bing and Dave. (Final verdict: They didn’t.) Now, it’s Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly’s turn. The comedy twosome got together with Funny or Die to film a fairly straightforward remake of the iconic (and comfortably bizarre) pairing, only stopping to add a few flourishes. Like this exchange: “It’s Bowie. It’s David F***ing Bowie!” / “And it’s Bing F***ing Crosby, pal.” Click ahead for some holiday cheer.

Lindsay Lohan to Gwyneth Paltrow: Come On!

Despite a sense of humor that’s spawned spoofs of herself on SNL and Funny or Die, Lindsay Lohan is deeply hurt by some people’s criticism these days. Just hours ago, we reported her apparent dissatisfaction with CNN calling her provocative . Now it’s Gwyneth Paltrow and Glee that have her in a tizzy. Paltrow recently appeared on Glee , playing a Spanish teacher teaching a lesson that included asking the class: “Lindsay Lohan is totally crazy, right?” I thought we were friends! FRIENDS! And, she then quizzed the class in Spanish, “How many times has Lindsay Lohan been to rehab?” Funny stuff, but predictably, Dina Lohan was pissed . Lindsay was watching the hit Fox show while in the Betty Ford Center and was devastated, and is “still so upset with Gwyneth,” her mom reports. “Lindsay said, ‘Why did she have to do that?’ Our family is the first to make fun of ourselves, but Gwyneth went overboard. It was unecessary.” This isn’t the first time she’s felt victimized. Lindsay claimed the stock trading company E*Trade violated her rights with its apparent mockery of her. The E*Trade case was settled in September, a month before Gwyneth’s stint on Glee . Although this won’t end in court, it certainly hurt a friendship . “Lindsay thought she was a friend and it was disappointing,” Dina told Radar Online . “It was really hard for her to watch… it was hurtful not funny.” Lindsay is expected to complete her rehabilitation at Betty Ford on January 3. Gwyneth will return to Glee in the same role. Hope LiLo can cope.
