At Last: A Use For the New York Times in Print

At a media summit in London on Wednesday, New York Times publisher Arthur Sulzberger predicted the Times will eventually go out of print (and become a wholly online/digital publication). But Times Home section contributor Anne Raver has uncovered a possible alternative use for the dead tree version of the paper: Compost. Under the hopeful headline ” Read First, Then Use to Kill Weeds ,” Raver made the case for using the Times, with compost, to kill garden weeds, as demonstrated in the above photo by the Times’s Rob Cardillo. “I knew I was saving those newspapers for a reason,” I said to Rock, as he rolled a cartful from the barn. (We have enough newspapers stacked in there to blanket the turf at the Augusta National Golf Club.) I started laying down the newspaper, four sheets thick, as Rock went off to dig some compost — rotted leaves from one pile, aged manure from another — and mixed it together in a wheelbarrow. I used the garden hose to wet the newspapers, to keep them from blowing away. But also because wet newspapers will decay faster, and roots from young plants will be able to grow right through to the soil below.

Snooki Busted For Texting While Driving

Newark mayor calls ‘Jersey Shore’ star out after she tweets while stuck in traffic. By Gil Kaufman Snooki Photo: Jerritt Clark/ Getty Images After making a plea deal to avoid a disorderly conduct charge and jail time on Wednesday (September 8), “Jersey Shore” star Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi vowed to turn over a new leaf. The pint-sized “Shore” party starter took offense at comparisons to troubled actress Lindsay Lohan after her appearance in a Seaside Heights, New Jersey courtroom, and Snickers’ lawyer promised that his client was done with running afoul of the law. Well, that was fast. Snooks, 22, hasn’t been arrested, but she did break one of the Garden State’s laws — and doing so landed her a virtual smackdown from telegenic Newark mayor Cory Booker. “Ugh stuck in newark traffic is no fun,” Snooki tweeted just hours after leaving the court room on Wednesday. Less than half an hour later, a still-exasperated Snooki added , “Omg why I got a stick shift I will never know. Stop and go traffic I’m killen myself here :(.” But then, according to the Huffington Post , Newark boss Booker caught wind of the tweets and reminded the big-haired reality star that, technically, she was breaking the law. New Jersey passed a text messaging while driving ban in 2008. The first offense carries a $100 fine, which can be levied even if the driver hasn’t been pulled over for another traffic infraction. “Snooki! I’m the mayor where R U so I can give u a ticket 4 texting & driving we needs revenue!” he tweeted . Booker had some help from a follower, who wrote, “Cory! Hasn’t she heard of Oprah’s No Phone Zone pledge?” a reference to TV titan Oprah Winfrey ‘s drive to get her fans to agree not to text while driving to increase safety on the roads. “Definitely going 2 tell @Oprah on her. @sn00ki needs an intervention,” Booker replied . Though Snooki didn’t respond to the Mayor’s threat, Booker did get some props from United States Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood, who tweeted , “Thanks for spreading the word about the dangers of texting while driving @Corybooker!” Snooki and her “Jersey Shore” castmates will present a Moonman at Sunday’s MTV Video Music Awards . Lady Gaga Book Shows Monster Ball Behind The Scenes

Photographer Terry Richardson follows singer everywhere, Gaga tells Vogue Hommes Japan. By James Dinh Lady Gaga Photo: Matt Harper/ MTV News Dressing up as her male alter-ego, Jo Calderone, isn’t the only surprise Lady Gaga has in store for fans in the upcoming issue of Vogue Hommes Japan. The singer, who is decked out in a string of raw meat with an open mouth on an alternate cover of the mag, dished about an upcoming Monster Ball book with photographer Terry Richardson and incorporating her artistic vision with another photographer, Steven Klein, on her “Alejandro” clip. “He wanted to do a book about the Monster Ball,” she says in the magazine, which hit stands Sunday. “He wanted to shoot me backstage, not onstage, and look at who I am offstage. He’s on the bus with me. He just follows me everywhere. He’ll photograph me when I’m changing — those quick changes during the show. And sometimes I’ll have to pee during the show, and I’m always screaming, ‘Terry, get out!’ ” But Gaga believes that Richardson remains keen on keeping the project full of candid moments, saying, “And he’ll be saying, ‘It’s so beautiful. You’re so punk!’ If only my fans knew I was peeing in a beer cup backstage.” Whether it’s her red-carpet fashion or the outfits donned during her everlasting Monster Ball Tour, the singer has always had an eye for pushing the fashion envelope . Things were no different when she had the opportunity to work on her “Alejandro” video with another critically acclaimed photographer: Steven Klein. “We are both very strong-willed, and we both have very specific visions,” she said. “And I knew his specific vision and he knew mine so that it was like tugging at a rope together.” But Mother Monster has ended up tying what she calls “a beautiful knot” with Klein despite their creative differences. “I wanted to bring him out of his comfort zone, and he wanted to bring me out of mine,” she explained. “I think what made the ‘Alejandro’ video so successful was getting Steven to look at pop choreography and my aesthetic in putting things that are really interesting of how to sell messages and metaphors into a pop landscape, so it suddenly becomes universal and means something completely different. And him stripping me down, taking off all my makeup, no eyelashes, no liner, saying ‘I’m cutting all of your hair off’ and not tanned. … For me, I was hyperventilating, but it did force me to be myself.” Being a pop star who takes her image by the reins only makes Gaga comparable to her idols of earlier decades, she says. “Everybody knew about it. It wasn’t like you had to do the research or pull the references back then. It seemed innately part of who everybody was,” she said, comparing herself to pop stars from the ’70s. “The art and the fashion and the music world were all intertwined, and I guess that is the world that I live in today just through who I truly am.” Are you excited for Gaga’s upcoming project with Terry Richardson? Justin Bieber Fans Call MSG Concert ‘Best Show Ever’

‘We came all the way from the Dominican Republic because we love Justin Bieber,’ one fan says. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Evan Leong Justin Bieber performs at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday Photo: Larry Busacca/ Getty Images If fans were looking for a spectacle when they bought tickets to Justin Bieber’s Madison Square Garden My World Tour stop , they got it. Bieber was joined by a slew of his celebrity friends including Miley Cyrus, Ludacris, Usher, Jaden Smith and Boyz II Men for the concert, footage from which will be used in his 3-D concert movie , due out next year. After the show, his fans couldn’t help but rave about the show and how much they adore Bieber. “It was amazing! The best concert ever! We love Justin Bieber and we want him to marry us,” Bieber fan Kelly told MTV News in the moments after the show wrapped. Another fan added, “OK, so the concert was amazing. We came all the way from the Dominican Republic because we love Justin Bieber. It was all full of surprises and amazing.” Samantha agreed with her fellow Beliebers, saying, “Honestly, it was the best thing I’ve ever been to in my life.” Another fan added, “He danced, he sang, he played piano, drums, guitar, and he was just so cute!” Olivia Bernstein and her pal Sarah raved about the show’s amazing powers, noting that they got into a bit of a scuffle in order to see Biebs in concert. “Fighting with two moms tonight was for him and it was great,” she said. “It was so much fun. It was one of the best concerts I’ve ever been to. All of the surprise guests were amazing.” Speaking of those special guests, they really amped up the show’s already over-the-top energy. “Miley Cyrus came. Usher was there. Jaden Smith, Ludacris … There were so many people … it was the best show ever,” Olivia explained. Kibriyaa added, “Justin Bieber’s my favorite, but when Jaden came out, I just … I jumped!” Inside the Garden, the screams were overpowering, and afterwards, Bieber fan Sarah admitted she was still feeling the side effects of Bieber fever. “We thought it was over and then he was like, ‘Do you want more?’ I can’t hear anything because our ears are, like, clogged.” Have you seen Justin Bieber in concert? Lauryn Hill Says She’s ‘Getting Closer’ To Releasing New Album

The singer also praises the crop of ‘young talent’ who are unafraid to be ‘unique and hard-core.’ By Shaheem Reid Lauryn Hill Photo: MTV News Lauryn Hill was feeling jovial on Saturday at Governor’s Island in New York City. One of the main attractions on the lineup, Hill was making her second stop on the Rock the Bells Tour , where we grabbed the opportunity to ask her when she might release her first studio album since 1998. “We’re getting closer,” she said with a chuckle. “We’re getting closer. That’s all I can say.” One thing seems certain when she does drop the follow-up LP: There won’t be many, if any, collaborations. She has too much to express after being mostly gone for more than a decade. “I have respect for what people do,” Hill said. “I also like to hear the eclectics, I like to hear the mixture. There’s a lot of different creative energies out there right now. I respect the different sounds that I’m hearing. It’s been such a long time since I’ve gotten my voice and my ideas [out]. In terms of collaborations, that’s not even something I’ve been thinking about per se. I’m happy that people are still making music. That we still have a platform with which to make music. It’s gonna be interesting to see what the future holds.” When Hill thinks about the current musical landscape, the iconic MC/songstress said she realizes it’s very different from the ’90s, but that there is nothing wrong with that. “It’s a lot going on,” Hill said. “It’s interesting energy. It’s not what it was, it’s different. That doesn’t necessarily means it’s a bad thing — it’s a different thing. Just like any new opportunity, it’s ripe for a lot of different things. You got a lot of young talent out there. Because we don’t necessarily have the same sort of industry complex that used to exist, people don’t always give, I want to say, proper respect to. But they’re doing it in a really kind of unusual, unique and hard-core way. Because the system is not necessarily in place like it used to be.” Are you excited to hear Lauryn is working on new music? Footage for his upcoming 3-D movie was shot at Madison Square Garden concert. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber performs at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday Photo: Larry Busacca/ Getty Images Right up until Justin Bieber took the stage at New York’s Madison Square Garden, it was an almost typical stop on the My World Tour, complete with hype man and opening sets from Jessica Jarrell and Sean Kingston, who stepped up his game and brought out Iyaz. But once Bieber, who was using his New York stop to film the concert footage for his 3-D movie , hit the stage, it was on, and the crowd’s screams reached a deafening pitch. Dressed in his white and purple tour regalia, he kicked off the show with “Love Me,” complete with karate-friendly dance moves. Any signs that Bieber had fallen ill only two days before weren’t remotely evident. He turned his swag on for “Bigger” and for the cameras filming the show for his upcoming film. “What’s up, New York City? Welcome to my world. We are gonna have a lot of fun tonight. I got a lot of surprises in store for you guys!” he told the crowd before going straight into the fan favorite “U Smile,” the next single he’s expected to release. The catch: He was joined by Boyz II Men for the Motown-flavored track. “Boyz II Men sing it,” he told the legendary R&B act before exchanging high fives. “These people are the ones who made me want to start singing.” And then the group performed their tune “On Bended Knee,” which they dedicated to Bieber’s mom. Bieber reclaimed the show with his song “Runaway Love,” with no Kanye West or Raekwon in sight. “New York City, are you ready to have some fun? I’m filming good. We’re shooting the movie,” he told the crowd before getting into his heart cage and flying over the audience for “Never Let You Go” and “Favorite Girl,” all while playing the guitar. “You know, I guess I was right. There are a lot of people in here!” he proclaimed before bringing a girl onto the stage for “One Less Lonely Girl.” Bieber was then ready to bring out the big guns. Usher would be the next special guest of the night, setting the party off during Bieber’s rendition of “Somebody to Love,” giving the pop sensation a big hug before leaving the stage. But Usher was only the first of the super superstars. Teen queen and 3-D movie vet Miley Cyrus then joined Bieber onstage as he slowed things down a bit for “Overboard.” “I got to tell you something,” Bieber said. “My motto to live by, there’s gonna be times in your life when people tell you you can’t do something. This is what I tell ’em: ‘Never Say Never.’ ” And as rumored, Jaden Smith took the stage to rap his heart out to one very excited crowd during the track. Left alone again, during “Up” Bieber flew over the stage in a cage and every girl went nuts. And after the crowd was reminded to make some noise, Bieber showed his fans how much he loves them by singing “One Time” followed by “That Should Be Me.” “It’s gonna get crazy in here! You ready to get crazy?” he asked the crowd, which pretty much had been getting crazy all night. Then Sean Kingston hit the stage with Biebs for their collabo, “Eenie Meenie.” Soon the crowd was instructed to light up the room by waving their cell phones while Bieber sang “Down to Earth,” during which he played a white baby-grand piano. Blowing kisses to the crowd, he departed the stage before his encore. “I heard you screaming, so I thought I’d come back out here. I want to thank everyone. Madison Square Garden is a big deal for me … and I’m really blessed,” he said. “So I want to say thank you! Anyways, let’s do another song!” He closed out the night with his megahit “Baby” and was joined by Ludacris and lots of fireworks. The MSG show proved that when Bieber asks you to show up for his massively fun 3-D movie taping, you show up. Tom Hanks, Rita Wilson Plead To Be On ‘Glee’

‘I was gonna get up on the stage tonight with them and start dancing,’ Wilson says of her love for the show at the Emmys. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Kara Warner Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson at the 2010 Emmy Awards Photo: Michael Buckner/ Getty Images Tom Hanks may have won a ton of awards in his career, including an Emmy on Sunday night for his work on the HBO miniseries “The Pacific,” but there’s still one thing that the Oscar winner has yet to do: He wants a part on “Glee,” as does his wife and fellow Gleek, Rita Wilson. ” ‘Glee,’ oh my God! Yes! Oh please. Call [show creator] Ryan [Murphy] up! I was gonna get up on the stage tonight with them and start dancing,” Wilson teased to MTV News at the HBO Emmy afterparty, where she tried to think up what her choice tune for the show would be. “For ‘Glee’? Hold on!” Her husband, on the other hand, had the perfect set of tunes for his wife to perform on the hit show. “You work for MTV, can’t you make that happen? Bring it on! Bring it on!” he joked. ” ‘All the Single Ladies’! Oh no! ‘Do You Believe in Love’ by Cher!” (Hanks famously sang the Beyonc

Justin Bieber Postpones NY State Fair Show Due To Illness

Singer had to reschedule Sunday’s Syracuse show for Wednesday. By Gil Kaufman Justin Bieber Photo: Mark Von Holden/ Getty Images Justin Bieber may only be a 16-year-old pop star, but he usually has the stamina of a globe-trotting Olympic marathoner. Despite his superhuman ability to jet from one coast to the next on a weekly basis, however, even the Biebs gets taken low every once in a while. That was the case on Sunday, when Bieber was forced to cancel his concert at the New York State Fair in Syracuse due to illness. According to the fair’s website , Bieber bailed on his Sunday night show and rescheduled for Wednesday (September 1). Because of the switch, promoters were also forced to push Wednesday’s previously scheduled Bieber show at the Verizon Wireless Arena in Manchester, New Hampshire, to December 9. On Friday, Bieber tweeted that he was psyched for the weekend’s shows but was not feeling well. “Next is Jersey, then Syracuse, then MSG in NYC for the 3D movie!!” he wrote that night. “Been super sick lately but u guys are carrying me. thank u for the love.” He was reportedly energetic during the show at New Jersey’s Prudential Center on Saturday night, though, showing no signs of the impending … Bieber fever. But on Sunday afternoon, Bieber’s enthusiasm had clearly been sapped a bit, when he posted the update , “really don’t know what to twitter … I’m getting rest right now and trying to recover from the not so good news from the doctor.” Though he didn’t mention that the Syracuse show had been canceled, he followed with a shout out to fans. “I’m gonna be OK just need 2 rest but I wanted all of u 2 know I never want to let any of u down. I really appreciate all the kind words.” The New York Daily News reported that the singer’s spokesperson vowed that Tuesday’s Madison Square Garden show will go on, which is good news for fans who were hoping to be part of the filming of the Bieber’s 3-D movie slated to take place at the concert.
