‘All of my albums are basically a reflection of where I am in my life at that moment,’ Tip tells ‘RapFix Live.’ By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway T.I. on “RapFix Live” Photo: Natasha Chandel/ MTV News Heavy is the head that wears the crown, but don’t fret: The King of the South has it all figured out. Throughout his career, T.I. has delivered various types of records, catering to different audiences, and though he has continually messaged that his next album, Trouble Man , will be a return to his aggressive style of rap, Tip has a little something for everyone. “All of my albums are basically a reflection of where I am in my life at that moment in time,” T.I. told MTV News’ Sway Calloway when he appeared on “RapFix Live.” “So the biggest difference in the man that I am today and the man that I was then, I guess musically, it’s gonna be more aggressive than Paper Trail . Back in 2008 when Tip dropped Paper Trail, the album that housed two of his biggest hits — the Justin Timberlake-assisted “Dead and Gone” and “Live Your Life” featuring Rihanna — he purposely stayed away from his usual trap music because he was facing federal weapons charges at the time. Now that he has completed his prison sentence, the Atlanta rapper doesn’t have the same constraints, so fans can expect to hear hustle-heavy tracks not unlike his 2003 single “Rubber Band Man.” Still, on the upcoming Trouble Man, Tip plans to satisfy fans who not only appreciate his underground work, but those who crave his Top 40 hits as well. He calls it a “high-class problem.” “There are so many classes of people and so many different demographics that are looking to T.I. to redeliver their favorite song,” he explained. “I’ve come to the conclusion that when you service one group of those fans, then there’s gonna be another group of fans who feel like, ‘He should’ve done what I wanted him to do.’ So you just gotta serve each group, so I’m servicing each group at a time.” How much are you looking forward to Trouble Man ? ‘Twilight’ producer says Pattinson would be ‘fantastic’ in the big-screen adaptation of ‘The Professionals.’ By Kara Warner Robert Pattinson Photo: Getty Images When it comes to knowing the comings and goings of Robert Pattinson , we’d like to consider ourselves experts, or very much in the know with regard to what movies we can expect to see the “Twilight” superstar make next. We know about his roles in “Bel Ami” , “Cosmopolis” , and of course “Breaking Dawn – Part 2” , but what do you think of Pattinson tackling a modern-day thriller a la “Bonnie and Clyde”? When MTV News caught up with “Twilight” producer Wyck Godfrey recently to discuss Pattinson and Kristen Stewart’s chances of another Best Kiss win at the 2012 MTV Movie Awards on Sunday (June 3), he revealed that he and Pattinson might be cooking up some post-“Breaking Dawn – Part 2” work plans, in the form of a big-screen adaptation of a crime thriller. “There’s a book called “The Professionals,” which is a new crime thriller that Rob has read and really likes,” Godfrey said of Owen Laukkanen’s well-received debut novel. “We’re just starting to look at a writer [to adapt it]. It’s kind of a ‘Bonnie and Clyde’ for today, and he would be fantastic in the role. It’s in the early days; we’ll see.” A modern-day version of “Bonnie and Clyde” sounds gritty and violent no matter which way you look at it. We asked Godfrey if he sees this potential big-screen crime thriller as a PG-13- or R-rated film for Pattinson. “Possibly R,” he said. “[Rob’s] an adult now.” Head over to MovieAwards.MTV.com to vote for your favorite flicks now! British boy band talks to MTV News about their ‘incredible’ Stateside tour experience and their ‘Up All Night’ DVD dropping Tuesday. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Wigler One Direction Photo: Getty Images One Direction are in the first week of their headlining U.S. tour . And, according to the guys themselves, they’ve gotten as much love from fans in the States as they did abroad. “[It’s going] good, great,” Louis Tomlinson explained to MTV News. “We did the first show [Tuesday and] it was amazing.” Liam Payne still hasn’t gotten over the scope of the shows they are playing here in the States, adding, “[It’s] incredible. It’s the biggest show we’ve done as a band so far, biggest audience for our own tour. So, it’s amazing, absolutely amazing, incredible.” For fans who weren’t able to nab tickets to the show, or have seen it and want to relive it, the band will drop their concert DVD , “Up All Night: The Live Tour” on Tuesday. And, Niall Horan explained how it all came together. “It was a show of our U.K. tour we did in January and we shot one of the shows for people who couldn’t get tickets to the show,” he said. “And we’re actually touring that show now in the U.S., so everyone’s going to get to see it at some stage.” “Up All Night: The Live Tour” is 73 minutes of 1D goodness, filled with campfire sing-alongs, quick shots of the guys shirtless during costume changes and even the fellas all done up in sleek suits as they close out the show with “I Want.” Once the band wraps up their tour here in July, One Direction will come back to the States in 2013 as a part of their massive world tour . ‘It’s kind of like a glimpse back to what a real rap show is,’ creative director Laurieann Gibson tells MTV News. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Vanessa White Wolf Nicki Minaj Photo: Kevork Djansezian/Getty Images Nicki Minaj is currently taking her Pink Friday Tour around the world before circling back Stateside in July . Given Nicki’s love for all things over-the-top, it’s no surprise that her first-ever headlining gig is all about going big or going home. The rapper’s right-hand lady, creative director and choreographer Laurieann Gibson , told MTV News that when they sat down to plot the trek, “There was a challenge to get through a 70-minute show” after Nicki had spent her last few tours opening for the likes of Lil Wayne and Britney Spears, but what they cooked up is something Gibson said she is “really, really proud of.” “I just put Nicki Minaj on the road, actually, and her tour is super special to me and doing really well,” Gibson told MTV News about working with the rapper again after their eye-popping Grammy performance back in February. “Nicki Minaj was so much fun for me, and it was like a real breath of fresh air, and musically, to get back to the rap game, to see a female MC dominate the pop charts, this, historically, for me, I feel a bit of responsibility,” she added. “When I did ‘The Rain,’ that video for Missy [Elliott], and just with Puff and the evolution of Bad Boy Records and my responsibility there and the pressure to maintain dominant rappers [on major award shows] and not let them lose street credibility, the years of all that torture … and all of those moments. When I got back to Nicki, I was so happy to be in that soulful music again, in that fight, in the idea that rap is not dead and that somebody like her can be many things in many genres and not be limited. “I love [when] I heard Roman Reloaded. I loved her delivery. I love the way she flows,” she added. “So the Pink Friday Tour is really good and it’s kind of like a glimpse back to what a real rap show is. It’s intimate but big at the same time.” Will you check out Nicki on tour? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Nicki Minaj
‘It’s not really something I would write, so I’m excited to get my own stuff out there,’ he tells MTV News. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Kelly Marino Phillip Phillips on the “American Idol” finale red carpet Photo: Alberto E. Rodriguez/Getty Images As has been his M.O. throughout this 11th season of “American Idol,” Phillip Phillips wowed the crowd and the judges with his show-stopping final performance of would-be single “Home.” MTV News was lucky enough to chat with Phillips on the red carpet leading up to the big finale Wednesday (May 23), where he revealed a few details about how he wound up choosing the rootsy ballad. “It wasn’t really too much of a process,” Phillips admitted with his trademark “aw, shucks” smile. “I got to hear it once and they said, ‘Would you like to do it?’ ” Obviously, Phillips did want to do that song, a smart decision that led to the evening’s only standing ovation from the judges. However, if the Georgia native had to do it all over again, without the strict time constraints they work under on “Idol,” Phillips said he would have preferred to have performed his own original song. “I wanted to do my own stuff, but we only had a certain amount of time to do everything, so I had to do that one, and it’s a really good song,” he said. “The writers are really good. It’s not really something I would write, so I’m excited to get my own stuff out there.” We’re sure Phillips’ adoring fans are excited to listen to his “stuff” as well. In the meantime they can watch and re-watch the sweet-tempered 21-year-old’s final performance, complete with a marching band, to hold them over. ‘[Today] is the last episode of the season and I think we are just really relieved,’ finalist Jessica Sanchez says about Wednesday’s finale. By Kelly Marino Jessica Sanchez performs on the “American Idol” finale on May 22 Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Getty Images The end is finally upon us. On Wednesday night (May 23), someone will be showered in confetti and ultimately crowned the 11th “American Idol” after going head-to-head in last night’s final performances. Will Jessica Sanchez take home the title, finally becoming the first female contestant since Jordan Sparks in 2007 to win? Or will it be Phillip Phillips , whose stage presence is so similar to the last few years’ winners, apparently all he needs to do is make the ladies melt with that guitar and he’ll be a shoo-in for first place. Regardless, not a lot of people can say they stuck it out this long. “Of course we all want to win, but it gets to a point where nobody really makes it this far,” Sanchez, a.k.a. the tiny girl with the huge voice, said backstage Tuesday night. “I love that I’m with [Phillip] in the top two. It’s amazing. He’s goofy and he’s funny and he is an amazing artist and an amazing person overall.” And those feelings were mutual — in so many words or less. When asked what his favorite performance of the night was, the humble yet painfully bashful Phillips replied with that infamous smile, “Probably all three of Jessica’s.” According to the judges though, it was Phillip Phillip’s song choice of “Home” in the final round that stole the show, giving him the one and only standing ovation of the night — a moment that might not have happened had he not calmed his nerves earlier on. “I was scared to death,” the husky-voiced Georgia native explained after realizing he would be performing in front of more than 7,000 audience members inside the Nokia Theatre L.A. Live. “But you know, I went out there and finally loosened up throughout ‘Stand by Me,’ and I just had fun the rest of the night. It was so, so fun.” And after three months of crazy schedules, lack of sleep, countless critiques, powerful (and some not so powerful) performances, it’s about time to have some fun and loosen up. With Tuesday night’s two-hour finale their last show of the season, both “Idol” hopefuls, who will take the stage singing duets with some of their favorite artists, agree it is a stress-free road from here on out. “We just feel like a weight has been lifted off our shoulders,” 16-year-old Sanchez admitted. “[Today] is the last episode of the season and I think we are just really relieved. We are going to miss each other so much. We are going to be on tour together, but I mean, this competition has taught us so much and it’s been really tiring too.” “We got to the point that whatever happens, happens,” Phillips, the only contestant never up for elimination, added. “We are two completely different artists and we wish each other the best with both of our careers.” Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions.
