Whitney Houston, Dead At 48: A Big Screen Tribute

Iconic diva appeared in celebrated box-office gems including ‘The Bodyguard’ and ‘Waiting to Exhale.’ By Eric Ditzian Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner in “Bodyguard” Photo: Warner Bros. The death of Whitney Houston, who died on Saturday (February 11) at the age of 48, leaves a gaping hole not only in the world of music, but in movies, too. She may have been best known for belting out R&B power ballads, but Whitney Houston also made an impact in Hollywood — a star in hit movies and a musical presence in countless other films. As we mourn her untimely death and honor her career, let’s take a look back at some of Houston’s cinematic achievements. “The Bodyguard” By far Houston’s most celebrated film, this 1992 romantic drama, in which she starred opposite Kevin Costner, became not only a box-office success (more than $400 million at the worldwide box office), but spawned one of the most popular movie soundtracks of all time. The disc won a Grammy for Album of the Year and its first single, “I Will Always Love You,” became one of the best-selling singles ever. “Waiting to Exhale” Three years after the success of “The Bodyguard,” Houston teamed with Angela Basset and Loretta Devine for a film about four friends and their various relationship dramas. Babyface produced the score and Houston performed two songs on the soundtrack, which went platinum seven times. Her “Exhale (Shoop Shoop)” hit #1 on Billboard ‘s Hot 100 chart. MTV Movie Awards Houston appeared three times at the MTV Movie Awards, once in 1993 following “The Bodyguard,” again in 1996 after “Waiting to Exhale,” and finally in 1999. In ’93, she was nominated for three awards, including Breakthrough Performance, but came away empty-handed. In ’96, she performed “Why Does It Hurt So Bad,” a single off the “Exhale” soundtrack. “The Princess Diaries” The singer never appeared in this Disney teen drama, but she produced the film, which is notable for having been Anne Hathaway’s breakout role. The movie grossed almost $170 million and spawned a sequel. “The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement,” which Houston also produced, grossed more than $130 million. “Sparkle” A remake of the 1976 musical, “Sparkle,” loosely based on Motown’s the Supremes, was slated to be revived with Houston as executive-producer and star. “American Idol” winner Jordin Sparks took on the role of Sparkle, with Houston playing her mother (her first movie role since 1996’s “The Preacher’s Wife,” in which she costarred along with Denzel Washington). “Sparkle” was shot in the fall of 2011 and has been slated for an August 17 release. When MTV News reached out to Sony/ Screen Gems after Houston’s death, we received this statement: “Like all those who knew and loved her, we are shocked and saddened and the world has lost an incomparable talent. Right now our thoughts are with her daughter, her family and her friends.” Join us for a tribute to Whitney Houston with non-stop music videos on MTV Hits and MTV Jams, all day Sunday. Just pray for her and the family,” Chaka tweeted upon hearing the news. Katy Perry: What Will She Look Like At The Grammys?

Singer’s hair colorist tells MTV News that she’s hoping Perry will want to keep her locks blue for the big show. By Jocelyn Vena Katy Perry Photo: Theo Wargo/ Getty Images is currently rocking turquoise blue hair (after initially shocking the world with a deeper blue hue back in January). Considering she’s not only up for two awards at the Grammy Awards on Sunday but is also hitting the stage for what’s sure to be a colorful, candy-coated performance, Perry could be showing off a completely different hair color this weekend. To get the scoop on what color hair Perry might be donning when she hits the red carpet at the Grammy Awards, we asked her longtime hair colorist, Rita Hazan. “I’m kind of feeling the blue right now, so I’m hoping we’re gonna be on that same page because I really think it’s really hot and it’s working for her,” she told MTV News. “So I’m assuming that we’re going to be staying with the blue for the Grammys, but you never know. “The night before it could be a whole different story,” she continued, laughing. “It depends, maybe she gets a dress she wants to match her hair to, but I feel like she’s going to rock the blue and find a dress to match the hair, which I absolutely love about her.” Hazan and Perry are quite the hair-color scientists. The blue hair was only the latest “vision” the twosome has dreamed up for the always up-for-anything Perry. “The thing with Katy, she has a feeling, she follows her gut, her instinct and she’s very fashion, she’s trendy, but that’s really naturally who she is,” Hazan said. “She doesn’t try to do anything, she just does it and it works for her and I think because she’s such an iconic girl, people just want to copy and do whatever she does. “With Katy, you never know. Between her and myself we get these crazy middle-of-the-night visions,” she continued. “You never know what happens. I just think watch out, something’s going to happen next and I don’t even know what it is.” Perry aside, Hazan thinks that everyone who attends the show is going to step up their game and go all-out when it comes to their hair. “I think that people are going to be a little bit over-the-top and extravagant,” she said. “I don’t think it’s going to be very calm or pretty hair. I think people are going to go for it.” Chaos! Profanity! Wardrobe malfunctions! Adele Should Win Big At Grammys, Brandy And Monica Say

Legendary producer Clive Davis agrees, calling this ‘the year of Adele.’ By Kelley L. Carter Adele Photo: Jon Furniss/ WireImage No doubt about it, it’s been the year of Adele . And when one of music’s most respected figures says it, you can’t help but agree. Legendary record producer and music executive Clive Davis sat and talked with R&B singers Brandy and Monica on Thursday, and they were all on the same page when it came to who they wanted to see take home the big prizes at the Grammy Awards on Sunday night. They’re fans of Rihanna, but they’d love British singer Adele to win the Grammy for Album of the Year . Both singers are up for the big prize, along with Lady Gaga, Bruno Mars and the Foo Fighters. “You know, it’s so hard because to me you can’t really choose one person when you know about both of their journeys. Rihanna is somebody I love because she’s OK with self. That’s something that’s always been resonated through her and her music,” Monica said. “I play ‘You Da One’ all day. When I think about my husband I play ‘You Da One.’ “But Adele’s voice is so amazingly beautiful,” Monica continued. “And the fact that she embodies the soul that you [talking to mentor Davis] used to tell me in the early ’90s not to be afraid of … He used to say, ‘Sing it big, sing it strong.’ Looking at her, she does that every time she hits the stage.” Davis added that Adele brings back that old soul, and he appreciates her big voice and style of music. “All the nominees — it’s a worthy thing to get nominated, but this has been the year of Adele,” Davis said. “No disrespect to any other nominee. In this era where there is perhaps too much electronica and dance music … I love it. It’s inventive, but it should not be the totality of what is exposed. She has just come back with pure music. Just throwing her head back and singing out with full voice, but songs that resonate as well.” Davis continued, saying, “It’s been an incredible impact on music and worthy of being singled out, as I’m sure it will be.” As for Brandy, she’s tossing her support behind the singer that her daughter Sy’rai adores. Naturally, it’s Adele. “My daughter is in love with Adele. She listens to her every day,” Brandy said. “To see someone with that much passion and soul move a 9-year-old is amazing and it’s magical.” Chaos! Profanity! Wardrobe malfunctions! Grammy Awards 2012 Line Up

Continued here:

The two weeks leading up to the Grammy Awards are when we finally get a good idea of who’s performing and who’s presenting. This year’s Grammy Awards, which is this Sunday at 8 p.m. on CBS, will feature about 22 songs being performed. The executive producer of the show says it’s going to be “one of the biggest shows” in the history of the Grammys. Chris Brown, Tony Bennett, and Carrie Underwood are the most recent performers who have been added to the lineup. This will be Chris Brown’s first Grammy performance in three years after he was arrested for assaulting then-girlfriend Rihanna at a pre-Grammy party in February 2009. He is nominated for three awards at the 2012 Grammys, including Best R&B Album for F.A.M.E. The Foo Fighters will participate in a “special performance highlighting dance/electronica music” at Sunday’s show and will collaborate with an unlikely crew that includes Chris Brown, Lil Wayne, David Guetta and Deadmau5. All five artists are nominated for Grammy Awards this year. Tony Bennett will duet with Carrie Underwood and Alicia Keys will lead an Etta James tribute alongside Bonnie Raitt. The Grammys announced last week that Adele will make her first performance after undergoing vocal-cord surgery. Previously announced Grammy performers include: Katy Perry, Jason Aldean, Kelly Clarkson, Glen Campbell, The Band Perry, Blake Shelton, Coldplay, Rihanna , Bruno Mars, Paul McCartney, Nicki Minaj and Taylor Swift.

The performance will mark her first time on the Grammy stage, an honor she adds to noms for Best New Artist, Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Album for her 2010 debut Pink Friday. Cash Money Records CEO Birdman is among the few who have already heard Minaj’s new album, and he’s given it glowing reviews. “She’s grown so much as an artist. She’s so talented that this sh– is scary,” he told Complex. She really is the female Weezy . Hands down, she bad as a mother—-er.
