Despite the fact that Princess Leia is every bit as iconic as Luke Skywalker and Han Solo , the fact remains that the entire Star Wars series has a total of five women with speaking roles, and only three of them — Padme/Amidala, Leia, and Anakin’s mother — count as major characters. It’s no wonder then, that Anakin had to be conceived by the Force itself, since apparently, there aren’t enough women in the Star Wars galaxy to populate a trailer park, much less a multi-planet republic, by normal means. But could the force finally be with the double-X chromosome squad for a change? If a cryptic tweet from Slashfilm ‘s Peter Sciretta hasn’t been misunderstood, the answer is a solid “possibly”! ‘Star Wars Episode 7’ Plot Possibilities Now obviously, we’re still very much in early speculation mode for Star Wars Episode VII . Will it be burping- and Jar Jar-free? Will it be based in-part on the Expanded Universe? Will we see aging stoner Harrison Ford playing an elderly Han Solo, like The Dude ? Who knows?! But speculation is the fuel on which the Internet runs, so far be it for me to say anything other than ‘yes, all those things will be true.’ The biggest mystery is, of course, just who the new films are going to be about. Everything, from the children of our original heroes, to the further adventures of Geriatric Luke, has been baselessly suggested, but Disney is keeping mum for now. Of course, even if Disney is bringing the full power of their enormous secrets-keeping machine to bear (seriously, how did they keep the Star Wars deal a secret for so long?), now that Episode VII is almost certainly in the full flower of pre-production, tidbits are bound to come out. Enter Sciretta, who tweeted this circumspect comment Thursday afternoon: Who said the lead character in Star Wars Episode VII is going to be a male star? :)— Peter Sciretta (@slashfilm) January 03, 2013 According to a Slashfilm Star Wars round-up post by Germain Lussier on Friday morning, Sciretta asked that this tweet be added to the article, but that “he couldn’t say anymore,” which strongly suggests he knows something specific, or at least wants us to think he does. The comment could be taken in any number of ways, of course. He might simply mean they’ll be casting a relatively unknown male actor in the lead. But the fact that he felt the need to specify male, rather than leave the question of gender blank, suggests the tantalizing possibility of a female lead. And yes, the sound you hear is millions of voices, crying out, “About damned time.” As for who this character could possibly be, don’t look to the established Star Wars Expanded Universe for answers. The official canon is incredibly convoluted at best. (See for yourself here .) It’s a tiered system in which the movies, and George Lucas himself, overrides everything else. Sure, we might see fan favorite Mara Jade, or even Leia and Han’s daughter Jaina, but given that public statements suggest the new films will plot their own course, I expect a completely new character. Assuming for a moment that Episode VII will mine the Expanded Universe, who would you like to see take the postulated female lead? Let us know, and feel free to argue about continuity, in comments. I’m not saying all dystopian kid-warrior movies set in the future are going to be shamelessly crib from their successful predecessors (especially those adapted from exceptionally popular, award-winning, decades-old tomes), but something feels and looks really familiar in the first official photo from 2013’s Ender’s Game , based on Orson Scott Card’s Hugo Award-winning sci-fi novel. In the first look, which debuted over at EW along with a preview chat with director Gavin Hood ( Tsotsi , Wolverine ), Asa Butterfield stars as Ender, a young Battle School recruit being trained to fight an interstellar war, gets a stern glare from Harrison Ford ‘s Colonel Graff. In the cash-littered wake of The Hunger Games , the first few looks at Ender’s Game hit the futuristic teen sci-fi signposts: A muted blue palette, austere high-tech aesthetic, retro-fascism (meets, hmm — American Apparel ?) garb, kids playing games… TO THE DEATH. But hey, whatever works. Ender’s Game hits theaters November 1, 2013. [via EW ] Follow Jen Yamato on Twitter . Follow Movieline on Twitter .

Now under the guiding force of Disney , Star Wars ‘ next director is becoming a source of intrigue. Last week one major rumored contender – Steven Spielberg – said he is a no-go and now two other front-running prospects have weighed in with their interest. The studio, which recently nabbed Star Wars creator George Lucas ‘ Lucas Films recently for $4.05 billion and tapped Arndt to lead the way on Star Wars: Episode VII , which is set for 2015. Spielberg, JJ Abrams and Brad Bird were reportedly sent extended treatments written for all three planned Star Wars installments. He is in talks to write Star Wars: Episode VII , which will go into production in time for its 2015 target release. But the initial batch of front-running possible directors seem to be whittling down on their own volition, though the talk-downs may always be more about containing expectations than actual intent. But on the surface, J.J. Abrams appears to be bowing out, while another contender, Jon Favreau , is being less resigned to the prospect of taking on the reboot. “I frankly feel that – I almost feel that, in a weird way, the opportunity for whomever it is to direct that movie, it comes with the burden of being that kind of iconic movie and series…,” said Abrams to HollywoodLife. “I am looking forward more then anyone to the next iterations of Star Wars, but I believe I will be going as a paying moviegoer!” Favreau, however, walked the fence, noting that he’s worked on the Skywalker Ranch with Lucas on Clone Wars and Iron Man to great success, adding to HollywoodLife: “I am just giddy, first and foremost as a fan, to see what happens with it. I think there is a lot of question marks of how they are going to do it, and who they are going to do it with, and what the story is going to be about; but to say that I am not excited about it is definitely an understatement. We’ll see.” Spielberg said last week that Star Wars isn’t his thing, telling Access Hollywood at the L.A. premiere of Lincoln , “No, no! It’s not my genre. It’s my best friend George’s genre.” Arndt actually was brought into the mix by Lucasfilm before Disney took over. Part of the sale included the “pretty extensive and detailed treatment for what would be the next three movies – the trilogy,” noted Disney’s Jay Rasulo, according to Deadline. Speculation has mounted that the franchise’s original stars, Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher will reprise their roles as Han Solo, Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia. In addition to his Oscar-winning screenplay for Little Miss Sunshine and nomination for Toy Story 3 , Arndt has written the screenplays for the upcoming Hunger Games: Catching Fire and a Pixar project dubbed “Untitled Pixar Movie That Takes You Inside the Mind” for director Pete Docter. He is the most glamorous four-legged A-lister alive, and Uggie isn’t wasting any dog years to cash in. The celebrated Jack Russell who stole the limelight in last year’s multiple Oscar-winning film The Artist is pushing his memoirs. The book titled simply, Uggie: My Story just came out and the lovable pooch headed to the City of Lights for a signing and photo call – naturally. Uggie even gave a couple of woof woofs for French newspapers at an event on the famed Champs Elysées, and used the Arc de Triomphe as a backdrop for photos. The famous pooch then headed to the world-famous Left Bank Brasserie Lipp for some gastronomic indulgence. Lipp counted fellow author Ernest Hemingway as a regular in addition to fellow actors Harrison Ford, Gérard Depardieu, Gregory Peck, Sharon Stone and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Even French Presidents Francois Mitterand and Jacques Chirac dined there – maybe another career goal for Uggie? Published by HarperCollins, Uggie shares about his love for Reese Witherspoon, with whom he starred in Water for Elephants and his much less glitzy start as an unwanted puppy at the dog pound. “Uggie is doing wonders for Franco-American relations,” his co-author Wendy Holden said via The Guardian. “After all his favorite word is ‘moi’ and he is a huge fan of saucisse . If only Mitt Romney had such charisma.” Uggie already has a product line, including an iPhone/iPad app. He’ll likely be well-off as he settles into his golden years at age 11 (that’s 77 to you and me). He’s travelling in style and the hotels have been kind enough to ask what he requires, but his needs are simple: clean water and the occasional fresh patch of grass. He was born to be a star,” added Holden. “The fact he is a dog is really by-the-by.” [ The Guardian ] [ Photo credit: David Livingston/Getty Images ]
