Rashida Jones and Emily Mortimer also join cast of comedy about a mama’s boy and his sisters. By Adam Rosenberg Paul Rudd Photo: Getty Images One of Paul Rudd ‘s next roles may be an “Idiot Brother,” but he sure has some beautiful sisters. Elizabeth Banks, Zooey Deschanel, Emily Mortimer and Rashida Jones will join the actor in the upcoming comedy “My Idiot Brother,” about a grown mama’s boy (Rudd) who visits each of his three successful sisters, bringing with him happiness and disaster in equal measures. The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Banks, Deschanel and Mortimer will play the three sisters. Banks is a single, career-minded journalist who is about to make it big; Deschanel is a bisexual woman who is having a hard time committing to her lovely girlfriend (Jones); and Mortimer is a Brooklyn mother who cares more about maintaining the illusion of a happy family than actually being happy. “My Idiot Brother” will be directed by Jesse Peretz with a script written by Evgenia Peretz and David Schisgall. Jesse Peretz is probably known best for directing the Zach Braff/ Amanda Peet 2006 relationship comedy “The Ex.” He also directed Rudd in 2001’s “The Chateau.” Banks recently completed a multi-episode run on “30 Rock” that she will likely reprise next season. Deschanel, who is touring on She & Him’s new album, will next be seen in the 2011 David Gordon Green-directed Middle Ages stoner comedy “Your Highness.” Mortimer was most recently seen in Martin Scorsese’s “Shutter Island,” which hit DVD/Blu-ray this week. And Jones, who stars in NBC’s “Parks and Recreation,” also has a starring role in the upcoming David Fincher-directed Facebook pic, “The Social Network.” Rudd’s upcoming movie with Steve Carell, “Dinner for Schmucks,” is out on July 23. “My Idiot Brother” is currently targeted for a 2011 release. Green Day Want To ‘Keep Adding’ Earlier Songs To ‘Rock Band’

‘It would be great to see songs from 39/Smooth and Kerplunk,’ frontman Billie Joe Armstrong says of new game’s track list. By James Montgomery Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong Photo: MTV News When you’ve got a discography that stretches all the way back to 1989, cramming all of it into one video game is sort of tough. That was exactly the problem facing Green Day when they partnered with the publishers of the “Rock Band” franchise — there was just too much music. So while the just-released “Green Day: Rock Band” features 47 tracks spanning the band’s entire career, it opens to their breakout 1994 album, Dookie, which any astute GD fan can tell you was actually their third studio record. But some omissions might prove to be temporary, according to the guys in the band. “That’s what’s cool about the ‘Rock Band’ thing, is if we want to add more songs, we can do it online, in the future,” drummer Tre Cool explained. “If we want to do some surprises and stuff, we can always keep adding to it.” “Yeah, it would be great to see songs that are from, you know, [Green Day’s 1990 debut] 39/Smooth and [’92’s] Kerplunk, to come out on it,” frontman Billie Joe Armstrong added. “You know, that’s what’s exciting … to visit some of the older songs too.” But until those older songs are made available, Green Day fans are going to have to make due with the 47 tracks that did make the cut, a list that includes all of Dookie, American Idiot and most of 21st Century Breakdown, not to mention songs from their Insomniac, Nimrod and Warning albums too. And that’s part of the fun for the guys in Green Day: looking back on older tunes, and even rehearing them as “stems,” remixed for the game by Chris Lord-Alge. “It’s exciting for me to hear the song ‘She,’ and you know, that was fun to watch and play,” Armstrong smiled. “And hearing the stems that they had to do with Chris Lord-Alge, who ended up doing all the different mixes for it to bring out the drums and the guitars and bass and vocals. That was really exciting too, for people to see or, to play or to hear again.” MTV News is celebrating the release of “Green Day: Rock Band” with a week of special coverage. ‘Green Day: Rock Band’ Features Decades Of Dye Jobs And Tattoos

‘I thought we could have a lot of fun with ‘Rock Band’ and highlight different times in our career,’ Mike Dirnt tells MTV News. By James Montgomery Green Day Photo: MTV News Capturing the likeness of a band that’s spent the past two decades rifling through Manic Panic and tattoo ink at a breakneck pace was one of the biggest challenges facing the designers of “Green Day: Rock Band,” and Green Day were more than ready to put them to the test. “I think we were sort of challenging the programmers and the game designers, like, ‘OK, but can you do this ?’ ” drummer Tre Cool said. “And they’re like, ‘Sure!’ ‘Well … can you do this ?’ ‘Yeah!’ ‘OK, but it’s got to be … ‘ ‘Yeah!’ They were really good.” “I thought we could have a lot of fun with ‘Rock Band’ and highlight different times in our career,” bassist Mike Dirnt said. “I thought it was a really cool way to kind of show people, you know, just different things [about the group] in a format the size of a TV set.” It seems that — nearly as much as their music — Green Day’s career can be broken down into specific looks too: the baby dreadlocks and eye-popping dye jobs of the Dookie days; the bottle-blond, leather-jacket look of the Warning era; or the black spikes (and even blacker eyeliner) of American Idiot, to name just a few. And the designers of “Rock Band” knew that — which is why all those looks made the cut. Plus a whole lot more, too. “Different details come up in the game that go from, you know, 1994 through 2000. Plus, what year is it now? 2009, 2010?” frontman Billie Joe Armstrong laughed. “And just kind of seeing the different tattoos and wearing a T-shirt I remember. Like, the T-shirt that I wore, and I wrote ‘Stupid’ on it and put an arrow up to my face. And that’s the kind of details that they seem to nail.” And while the hairstyles and tattoos might be instantly recognizable to Green Day fans, there’s another — slightly newer — detail that designers decided to include almost as a joke: the band’s Drunk Bunny, which started making appearances during American Idiot performances and has since become a fan favorite. And, yes, his inclusion made all the difference to the guys in the band. “Yeah, that’s great too. Sometimes when we were playing festivals, whoever was playing right before us weren’t quite getting the crowd going, so I think we ended up with a friend of ours just putting a bunny costume on and said, ‘Hey, go warm up the crowd!’ ” Armstrong smiled. “So, you know, they’d just down beers and get everybody to do the YMCA, you know? It’s definitely a nice touch.” MTV News is celebrating the release of “Green Day: Rock Band” with a week of special coverage. For more on the game, check out our Multiplayer blog. Anna Kendrick ‘Sprinted Onstage’ To Accept MTV Movie Awards’ Best Movie

‘I didn’t know if I should go up at the end or not,’ she says of her small role in ‘New Moon.’ By Kara Warner Anna Kendrick Photo: Getty Images Anna Kendrick spent much of last year as a critical darling, rewarded with one nomination after another for her performance opposite George Clooney in “Up in the Air.” Despite all the acclaim, Kendrick seems convinced that most of her MTV fans still know her only as Jessica Stanley from the “Twilight” films. Judging by her visibly surprised expression upon hearing her name called for the Best Breakout Star at Sunday’s MTV Movie Awards , the starlet appeared not to have considered the Twilighters’ voting power. “I am not cool enough to win an MTV Movie Award!” she said when she accepted her Golden Popcorn, beating out Chris Pine, Zach Galifianakis, Gabourey Sidibe, Logan Lerman and Quinton Aaron for the honor. “So I am not going to mess it up by talking any more than I should.” Later on in the show, Kendrick faced a similar self-conscious struggle in deciding whether she should join her castmembers onstage to accept the Best Movie award for “New Moon.” “It’s so weird. I’m not, like, a big part of the movies, and I understand people are in it for Rob [Pattinson], Taylor [Lautner] and Kristen [Stewart],” she told MTV News. “So I didn’t know if I should go up at the end or not [when the cast won Best Movie]. At the last second, I sprinted onstage. “I was really psyched to get Best Breakout,” she added. “That was so exciting, and then when [‘New Moon’] won, I was the idiot who crawled onstage at the last second.” What did you think of Kendrick’s win and acceptance speech? Would you have second-guessed getting up onstage with the “Twilight” cast? Sound off in the comments! Crystal Bowersox’s Friends Looking Forward To ‘American Idol’ Finale

‘We come from this little town, and to see her do it … is pretty awe-inspiring,’ one friend tells MTV News. By Gil Kaufman Crystal Bowersox on “American Idol” Photo: FOX During Wednesday night’s results show, Crystal Bowersox talked about how exciting it is for her to see how her run on “American Idol” has brought some hope to her struggling hometown of Toledo, Ohio. She got emotional when reliving her trip home last week and the joy she saw in the eyes of her northwest Ohio fans. On Thursday (May 20), that pride was peaking after the single mom made it to next week’s finale . “I feel incredible about her making it all the way,” said good friend Nate Woodward , who was in the audience for both shows this week in Los Angeles. “I’m not surprised, because I certainly think she has the ability, but it’s still kind of weird. We come from this little town, and to see her do it — even though we know she has the talent — is pretty awe-inspiring.” Just like Bowersox, Woodward hesitated for a second on Wednesday night when host Ryan Seacrest announced her finale bid, because he said it’s a bit hard to hear the audio from the stage in the “Idol” studio. “It was confusing,” he said of the moment when Seacrest told Crystal she’d be joining Lee DeWyze in the finale, to which she said “I’m safe? I’m safe?” “We felt the same way Crystal did, and the crowd was all asking, ‘What did he say?’ But once we figured it out, it was kind of emotional,” Woodward recalled. “I was with her boyfriend, Tony, and his two sisters, and we just all jumped up and down and clapped and got pretty emotional.” Woodward said he also got emotional when watching the footage of the hometown visit, because he knows what a huge impact her success has had on people back home and how genuine her feelings are about the trip back. “It really does give us something to feel good about right now,” he said. “People have something to smile about. But more than anything else, it comes down to the fact that she does actually have a gift and talent.” Will she win? Nate sure hopes so, and he thinks she deserves it, but he knows Lee is stiff competition and that no matter what happens Crystal — whom he used to watch play to a dozen or so people from behind the bar at the Village Idiot bar back home — has already won just by getting this far. “I wasn’t surprised that Crystal advanced yesterday, but still, I was nervous and happy when they announced that,” said John Schafer, the booker for the Village Idiot . “I believe that, clearly, she has been the best from the beginning and is the one to beat. I like Lee, he’s good, but Crystal’s voice shines.” Are you rooting for Crystal to win it all next week? Let us know in the comments! Crystal Bowersox’s Hometown Fans Say Her ‘Idol’ Run Gives Them Hope

Teens and other followers in Ohio are inspired by Bowersox’s success. By Gil Kaufman Crystal Bowersox Photo: FOX TOLEDO, Ohio — Like its neighbor to the north, Detroit, Toledo has been hit hard by the Great Recession and the shrinking American auto industry. Downtown is littered with the hulks of giant factories that used to help supply parts and materials to the Motor City’s car industry, but which now sit fenced off, their broken windows and weed-choked parking lots a testament to better times in this industrial city. But despite areas with some of the highest double-digit unemployment rates in the state, these days there are plenty of reason for hope thanks to the unlikely championship run of the area’s new favorite daughter, “American Idol” top three contestant Crystal Bowersox. “She came from a small town, so it shows anybody can do anything,” said Derek Wood, 14, who gathered with more than 200 others to watch the elimination show in the Baptist church across the street from Bowersox’s childhood home two weeks ago. “I think it gives [kids around here] the chance to open up their dreams and try other things … think they can actually do it. I think she’s going to win.” That kind of optimism can be found all over the Toledo area, from the spanking-new signs proclaiming tiny Elliston, Ohio (population 75), the hometown of Bowersox, to the dozens of store windows painted with messages of encouragement for MamaSox in neighboring Oak Harbor, put up by the cheerleaders from the singer’s old middle school. After Bowersox made it through to the top four that night, Oak Harbor native Jaime Sellback, 20, was relieved and said the success has helped create a sense of community in the area. “I think it’s brought everyone together, really, I mean, to have an ‘Idol’ from our town?” she said after attending her first viewing party at the church. “It’s just crazy to think that someone’s going to hopefully win it — well, she will win it — and be famous … just from a small town, and she’s done so good.” Of course she’s a bit biased, but Bowersox’s grandmother, Alice Bowersox, is not only proud of her granddaughter’s success, but glad the rest of the world finally gets to see what she’s known all along. “We knew she was going somewhere,” said Alice Bowersox. “We really knew she had a lot of talent. And now the rest of the world is finding it out.” When it’s suggested that her granddaughter’s rise from a modest rural Ohio background to the biggest stage in television is a quintessential American success story, Alice blanches a bit, showing some of that signature Bowersox grit that Crystal has displayed when sparring with the judges on the show. “We always knew that she was going to go far,” she said modestly. “And coming from a small town doesn’t really have a whole lot to do with it. It was her drive and she really worked hard for this. That one night [on ‘Idol’] when she talked about singing in the subway in Chicago, she really did that. She’d sing anywhere.” The previous night, Dr. Jeff Bunkers, who was Bowersox’s orthodontist when she was a teenager, sat up close to the TVs at the Village Idiot in Maumee, Ohio — where Bowersox had a standing weekly engagement up until she left for “Idol” — and watched her perform with a big smile on his face. “I think it shows people that … if you can dream it, it’ll happen. No matter how long it takes, it will happen,” he said. “So I think we should all have some dreams and let’s work towards fulfilling those dreams. Because I think Crystal … she’s showing us that no matter where you come from, what you think, you can really make it happen.” That can-do message has spread all the way down to the school Bowersox attended, Oak Harbor Middle School, where principal Marie Wittman has been using an old video of the singer winning her sixth-grade talent contest as a way to motivate students during their recent Ohio achievement tests. “I can actually play off of Crystal’s success because she was very driven at a young age and has worked so hard,” said Wittman. “I told the students that with hard work and dedication and all of those good things, that they will be successful some day, that they never know where their dreams can take them.” With the annual talent show coming up, she said some students have already taken Bowersox’s example and signed up for guitar lessons thinking that they might follow in the Ohio native’s footsteps. Perhaps nobody is prouder, though, than local musician Ron Rasberry , the man who was one of the first in the area to give Bowersox a shot at playing on a real stage and who has nurtured her musical aspirations for more than a decade. “Man, people are walking around and smiling,” said Rasberry, perched on a stool on the stage at the gritty downtown Toledo bar Papa’s Tavern, where Bowersox began playing at age 14 and where she is now enshrined in a hand-painted mural on the wall beside Rasberry. “This city needs a good shot in the arm, you know. Right now things are little tough and rough around here. … She’s putting smiles on people’s faces that wouldn’t ordinarily watch that show. And I’m one of them.” Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions. Crystal Bowersox’s Friend Calls ‘American Idol’ Success ‘Surreal’

Nathan Woodward, who has gone to L.A. for an ‘Idol’ live show, works at a bar where Bowersox used to play. By Gil Kaufman Crystal Bowersox Photo: Jesse Grant/ WireImage MAUMEE, Ohio — This time last year, Nathan Woodward could step out of the kitchen at the Village Idiot bar/ pizza restaurant and walk right up to the front of the stage to watch Crystal Bowersox perform. Now, even when he flies out to Los Angeles to see her rock the stage on “American Idol,” he can’t get nearly as close as he could back in the good old pre-fame days of 2009. Woodward, 36, met Bowersox two years ago at the Idiot, where he bartends and makes pizzas on the weekend and where, on a recent Tuesday night, he was sitting in on organ with the house band after a crowd gathered to cheer Bowersox on during the Frank Sinatra-themed performance night. “I was working in the back making pizzas, and I heard this awesome voice, and I went out and I actually said to the bartender working there, ‘Who is this?’ ” recalled Woodward, who stood behind the bar next to Frankie May, Bowersox’s old friend and bass player, to watch that night’s performances. “I had to come out from the back of the kitchen because, when I heard her sing, I got goose bumps,” he said. “We have a lot of good bands come through here, and when somebody stands out like that, you have to go say to the other employees, ‘This is awesome. We’ve really got something here. It’s spectacular.’ ” From that point on, Woodward and Bowersox became good friends, and he did his best to encourage other people to come out and listen to her sing. “Toledo is a weird town. … We have really good bands in here, and a lot of times nobody shows up,” he said of the Idiot, which has music every night of the week, alternating between local bands and national acts who take to the low stage in front of a tall window that faces the picturesque downtown streets of the Toledo suburb. “So when she played here [and] there was nobody in the bar — there’d be eight, 10 people — we would call people and say, ‘You have gotta come in here and see her play. She’s amazing.’ ” Even with those calls, though, Woodward said the crowds never even approached the 50 to 60 people who showed up on Tuesday night to cheer Bowersox on. Though they’ve stayed in touch over the years, and he took her to see Phish when she lived in Chicago — as well as going out to L.A. to see her on “Idol” in April — Woodward said seeing his friend on the biggest show on TV is still a mind-bender. “[It’s] the most incredible thing you can imagine,” he said. “It’s like, it doesn’t … it’s surreal. It’s not that I see somebody I know being a superstar; it’s seeing somebody I know doing something really, really great and the way that she fights back with the judges, it’s totally her, it’s her personality. She’s like, ‘Take me or leave me.’ It’s really cool.” What you see of Bowersox on TV is what you get, and that’s exactly the same person Woodward got to know. He described Crystal as a sweet, nice person who will not hesitate to tell you exactly what she thinks, which is why he relishes her back-and-forth with the judges every week. “I think that’s what makes her so great, and I think that’s one of the reasons why she’s doing well on the show,” he said of her feisty personality. “I think the reason the audience is reacting the way they are is because they see somebody who is just a genuine person going out there with a great voice and singing great songs and doing the best thing that she can.” Even after backing her up for much of last year — including numerous Village Idiot shows — and doing some studio sessions with her, bass player Frankie May is also a bit stunned at how far his friend has come. “I never doubted that she had the talent to do it,” said May, 28, a quiet, intense musician with a bald head, chin piercing and intense eyes whose father, Bob May, is one of Bowersox’s musical mentors. “But everyone was saying that she’s not that bold … and she’s kinda breaking it, and it’s a wonderful thing.” May said he texts with Bowersox and talks to her on the phone pretty regularly, and while they don’t talk much about “Idol,” he can tell that despite missing her toddler son and her denials of reported cold feet about staying on the show, she’s aware of what a great opportunity the show is for a young single mother. “She’s sticking with it. … She’s strong,” he said. That feeling of euphoria extended to the cast of “Idiot,” too. After all, they’ve been working on the production for close to two years now, shepherding it through rehearsals, a run at the Berkeley Repertory Theater last year and, finally, to Broadway. It’s been a labor of love every step of the way, so, you know, they were feeling pretty good at the party too. “It’s one of those nights that’s going to be really difficult to put into words in the future,” John Gallagher Jr., who plays Johnny, said. “It’s been a long time coming. We’ve been working on the show for almost two years, so to open it on Broadway — which has always been the ultimate dream, the ultimate destination — it’s just been incredible.” “The night was electric, because the house was incredibly endorsing of us, from the time that the curtain went up,” added Tony Vincent, who plays St. Jimmy. “And when it went down, there was this huge relief, that what we brought to Broadway was legit rock and roll, for the first time in, I think, possibly, ever. And we killed it tonight.” Early reviews of the show have been equally gushing — The New York Times called the production “thrillingly raucous and gorgeously wrought” — and so, there seemed to be nothing to do besides celebrate. After all, it’s been a long journey to get to this point. “[It was] unbelievable. Just completely unbelievable,” Michael Esper, who plays Will, said. “The experience of doing this show tonight was something I will never forget as long as I live. The excitement from the house, the feeling onstage, the love between everybody, it was overpowering.” Do you plan on seeing “American Idiot” on Broadway? ‘I don’t think there’s ever been a bigger high in the 21 years’ of the band, Billie Joe Armstrong says of Broadway debut. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Rya Backer Green Day at the opening of “American Idiot” on Broadway on Tuesday Photo: Jason Kempin/ Getty Images New York — On Tuesday night in New York, the Great White Way got a little bit more punk rock when Green Day officially opened their Broadway opus, “American Idiot.” The band was joined by the show’s cast, as well as a number of celebrity fans like Donald Trump, Zachary Quinto and Paul Rudd to celebrate the show’s debut at the St. James Theatre. Admittedly, having a Broadway show might be the least punk rock thing in the universe, but Green Day couldn’t have been prouder to see all their hard work hit that stage and rock up midtown Manhattan. “I don’t think there’s ever been a bigger high in the 21 years that we’ve been a band together,” Billie Joe Armstrong told MTV News on the red carpet before the curtain rose on the show. Armstrong was equally taken by the fact that the band, and those involved with the show, were able to take an album like American Idiot and make it something that people could see in Broadway musical form. “You make this crazy record that’s political and it’s a rock opera and it has [been] brought to flesh and blood,” he said. “People actually acting it out onstage in pretty much the linear exact way you thought it was going to come out. It’s amazing.” The guys recently admitted that they are so moved by the adaptation that it made them cry . “All of us actually came to tears, because you don’t get to see Green Day play live if you’re actually in Green Day,” bassist Mike Dirnt said. “But to see these voices and the way all the cast were singing, you just abandon hope of a tissue and let ’em stream. … [We were like,] ‘No, that’s allergies, man!’ ” Related Videos Green Day’s ‘American Idiot’ On Broadway Related Photos The Evolution Of: Green Day Related Artists Green Day
