Actress Nia Long gave birth to a baby boy, Kez Sunday Udoka, this past Monday. According to spokeswoman Priscilla Moralez “both mother and child are healthy and happy to be home.” Spend 24 Hours In Nia’s Hometown! The 41 year old actress has a 1o year old son, Massai Dorsey II from a previous relationship. This is the first child for Long’s partner, NBA player Ime Udoka. In an interview with Ebony Magazine, Nia shared that her doctors were doubtful she could ever conceive another child due to her age, and turned inward for spiritual strength: “I honestly asked God for this. I remember I was driving home from the doctor, and I called [my boyfriend] Ime, and I was like, ‘Babe, I’m really kind of sad right now. The doctor actually said if I wanted to have more children, it would be hard.’ The next time [Ime] came to visit, he said, ‘I don’t believe that.’ I said, ‘You don’t?’ He said, ‘No.’ And I said, ‘Good, me neither.’ Then I got pregnant.” 2011 is turning out to be a banner year for Nia; in addition to her new bundle of joy, she enjoyed rave reviews earlier this year as a loving Muslim mother in the indie hit Mooz-lum, as well as the recent announcement Universal Pictures gave the greenlight for a sequel to 1999′s The Best Man . By Eric Ditzian Elizabeth Olsen Photo: MTV News On the Upstate New York set of “Martha Marcy May Marlene,” the indie that wowed Sundance earlier this year and is finally hitting theaters Friday, Elizabeth Olsen spent more than a couple of days stripping down — sometimes to jump into an icy cold lake, sometimes to jump someone’s bones. While Olsen admits that those nude scenes were a bit odd to film, she left no doubt that simply diving into the water was far more perilous than doffing her clothes in front of a camera. “The lake was daunting,” she told to MTV News. “Some lake scenes we could only shoot once, because it was physically too cold for a body to be in there very long.” By contrast, Olsen looks back at her nude scenes as all part of the “Martha Marcy” job — one that might earn her an Oscar nomination for a stunning performance as a woman who flees a cult and lands at her sister’s lake house, yet is besieged by remembrances of her traumatic past. “Everyone’s always put in some sort of weird situation when you’re making a movie,” she said. “I didn’t treat [the nude scenes] any differently. The only thing we treated differently was that our first [assistant director] would swap out with our second AD, who was a female, and she’d call the shots.” Even the lake scenes, though, don’t count as the most difficult she took on. That distinction goes to an astonishing, single-take party scene in which Olsen’s character slowly builds from hesitating partygoer into out-of-control, vocal-cord-shredding meltdown mode. “What was hard about that is that it was one shot, and it does have a climax to it. It was also our first experience with lots of extras, and these aren’t people who are actors. They’re just people in town who wanted to be in a movie, so they love talking to you in between takes. That was distracting. Personally, that was my most difficult scene to film.” Despite the intensity of the role, Olsen said the character didn’t stay with her after she finished shooting last summer. “It wasn’t very difficult to leave behind,” she explained. “I always keep myself very separate from a character, not trying to think that I’m the character or all those things, because especially in this movie, that’d be very bizarre. What I did leave behind, which I really missed and what was really sad, is all of these people became really, really close friends of mine. Thank God they all live in Brooklyn! So we’ve been able to hang out all the time. Julia Roberts shot newbie director Dennis Lee’s ensemble family drama Fireflies in the Garden four years ago, but after an infamously disastrous Berlin Film Festival showing and distributor drama at Senator Films, the indie film languished for years on the shelf. Last night at their premiere in Los Angeles Lee told Movieline how Roberts saved the film from direct-to-video hell and Roberts explained why her upcoming project, Snow White , will be worth the price of admission.
Opening this weekend in limited release, Fireflies in the Garden isn’t exactly Hayden Panettiere’s “new” film. It’s more like her embattled, shelved, revisited and re-revisited film — shot in 2007, a festival curio in early 2008 and thought lost to the indie-film ages until recently, when plans were finally made for its theatrical distribution. At least she’s in pretty phenomenal company, starring alongside Julia Roberts, Ryan Reynolds, Willem Dafoe and playing a young Emily Watson in the tale of a family grappling with generations of guilt, misunderstanding, tragedy and maybe — just maybe — a future.
OutKast fans can finally rejoice! It looks like music executive L.A. Reid is making major moves at his new label home Epic Records. According to The Hollywood Reporter , legendary Atlanta duo OutKast will be signing a group deal with Reid, in addition to Atlanta’s own Ciara. The HR says: Since taking over Sony Music’s Epic Records in July, label chairman and X Factor judge L.A. Reid has been busy erasing the company’s tarnished image and rebuilding its roster, which will soon include Outkast and Ciara, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter. Reid has a long history with both acts, who were originally signed to his LaFace Records (label home to a young Usher, Pink and TLC). In 1994, LaFace, which had entered into a joint venture partnership with Sony’s Arista Records in 1989, released Outkast’s debut album, Southern-playalisticadillacmuzik. Ten years later, with Reid nearing the end of his presidency at Arista, the duo’s Speakerboxxx/The Love Below sold 11 million copies and won six Grammy awards.
