Demi Lovato Confirmed As ‘X Factor’ Judge

Lovato and Britney Spears expected to be at Monday (May 14) Fox upfront event. By Gil Kaufman Demi Lovato Photo: Tom Pennington/ Getty Images America will meet the rebooted panel of the “X Factor” on Monday and filling the fourth slot at the judge’s table will be Demi Lovato . The 19-year-old Disney star is expected to make the announcement of her high-profile gig on Monday at the Fox network upfront presentation, which will also officially reveal the worst-kept-secret in TV: that Britney Spears has joined the show as well. Lovato is one of the many names
that has been in the mix for the gig, which at one point also included Avril Lavigne, Janet Jackson and Mariah Carey. TMZ confirmed that Lovato has scored the gig, which will put her on alongside series creator Simon Cowell and music executive L.A. Reid when the show comes back for its second season in the fall. Last week, Spears finalized her deal, which will reportedly pay her $15 million
for one season’s work. Spears and Lovato replace Paula Abdul and former Pussycat Dolls singer Nicole Scherzinger, who were fired in January after the first season of the heavily-hyped show failed to live up to Cowell’s lofty expectations. Both Lovato and Spears are expected to be on hand on Monday when Fox announces the show’s new lineup at its upfront presentations. Though Lovato has a summer tour planned
, those dates will reportedly not conflict with her new duties on “X Factor.” A spokesperson for “X Factor” could not be reached for comment at press time. Last week, MTV News asked some media experts whether the move to “X Factor” makes sense for Spears and the general consensus was that it did. “I think it is a good move, actually,” said Entertainment Weekly
writer Tanner Stransky. “I think she has so many people on her team watching what she’s doing and being careful. I think nobody would let her take a misstep, but I think it’s the right move right now.” The only concern is how the reclusive star might deal with the increased scrutiny and requirement to think on her feet on live TV. “I think everyone is a little concerned, simply because Britney has been very press-shy since she’s been in her conservatorship, and everything is incredibly guarded and incredibly controlled,” said Keith Caulfield, associate director of charts at Billboard . “And there can be uncontrollable moments on ‘The X Factor,’ and if things are not completely in control and things are not rehearsed, things could go wrong. With a live show, anything can happen, and that can be very exciting but, at the same time, a little worrisome.” Lovato and Spears, 30, are the kind of young singers that “X Factor” producers were seemingly looking for to give the show a more youthful appeal and share their experience with contestants. Both are former child stars who’ve struggled with personal issues
and neither has experience appearing on live network television. Do you think Demi Lovato will make a good “X Factor” judge? Let us know in comments below. Related Photos The Evolution Of: Demi Lovato Related Artists Demi Lovato

Could Nina Dobrev Appear In ‘Fifty Shades’ Movie With Ian Somerhalder?

‘All I’ve heard is that it’s very scandalous, to say the least,’ Dobrev tells MTV News of the best-selling book. By Jocelyn Vena Nina Dobrev Photo: MTV News Nina Dobrev hasn’t read the best-selling “Fifty Shades of Grey” just yet, but with every young starlet’s name floating around as a possible contender for the female lead, literature student Anastasia Steele , she might want to start reading up. “All I’ve heard is that it’s very scandalous, to say the least,” the “Vampire Diaries” star told MTV News. “I haven’t read it, but who knows? I mean, well, I guess we’ll have to see.” Fans of the erotic trilogy might not mind seeing Dobrev get her S&M on with her “Diaries” co-star Ian Somerhalder in the big-screen adaptation of the E L James book. But she confessed that if she does play the part, she wouldn’t want to have Somerhalder playing the millionaire beau, Christian Grey . “I don’t know if that’s a good idea,” she said. “I think it’s best for any of the actors on the ‘Vampire Diaries’ to kind of do their own things … and create new characters. And as much as you try when you shoot a movie, if it’s two of the same people, the fans will always see you as … they’ll see me as Elena and they’ll see him as Damon if we do a film together.” So, that means “Fifty” fans will only get either Dobrev or Somerhalder if either gets cast in the film. And Dobrev is most certainly rooting for him. “I think it would be better [if] either he should get it or I should get it,” she said. “I know that apparently he’s really great for the role, so I hope that he gets it.” Given how sexy the book is, casting might not be the only challenge. Some fans are wondering how they can adapt the highly charged sex scenes for an R-rated version of the film . “Making this movie will absolutely be a challenge. It is going to take a devoted director who admittedly likes the books and understands that, first and foremost, this is a love story,” Lisa Parker from FiftyShadesFilm.com told MTV News. “If telling the love story is the main focus, then we do believe the steamy sex scenes can be shot and edited in a way to get us an R-rated movie rather than NC-17 … [the fans] are confident that Ms. James will protect the integrity of her story regardless of the ultimate rating.” Who would you like to see cast in the film version of “Fifty Shades of Grey”? Jay Sean’s Pitbull Collabo The ‘Epitome’ Of Feel-Good Summer Tracks

‘I think sometimes certain voices and certain vibes and certain styles just work together,’ Sean says of ‘I’m All Yours’ collabo. By Jocelyn Vena Jay Sean Photo: MTV News For Jay Sean ‘s lead single, “I’m All Yours,” off his forthcoming album Worth It All, there was only one guy who could capture the track’s bounce and party vibe. That guy is Miami-bred rhymer Pitbull , who brings his signature sense of gruffy swagger to the song. “Well, you know, people who know my music, especially when I first came over to America, one of the first things that people noticed with my songs is I like to do feel-good songs. And when it comes to the singles, that’s what I like to give them. And ‘I’m All Yours’ is really the epitome of all that,” Sean explained to MTV News about the dance track. Full of pounding beats and bleeps, the song is about falling for a girl who makes all the partying and fun even better. “It’s taking the modern movement of dance, which has obviously taken over the whole world, but I’m not putting it in the nightclub environment,” he continued. “So it’s still got that element of romance, which is what I like to bring to music. So it’s high-energy and romantic. And the Pitbull collaboration actually happened in Australia, where we were on tour together, and you know, we’re all fans of each other. We got talking, like, ‘Man, we should do something.’ So we laid it out right there and then.” What emerged from their friendship is a song tailor-made for both Sean and Pit. The track is fun, summery and a definite dance-floor anthem, three qualities these two guys know a lot about given their individual music histories. “I think the thing is, you got someone like Pit and myself, we share similar fanbases, but also, as I said, it’s that high-energy music that really blends well together,” he said. “And I think sometimes certain voices and certain vibes and certain styles just work together on a record, so it was just nice the way it came out.” Related Artists Jay Sean Pitbull

Selena Gomez’s Perfume Is A Product Of Her Fans

‘They’re the people that are going to wear it,’ she tells MTV News of why she enlisted fans to help create her first-ever fragrance. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Kara Warner Selena Gomez Photo: MTV News For her first-ever fragrance, singer/actress Selena Gomez enlisted her fans to help her nail down the kind scent they wanted to spritz on themselves. It was this process that was the highlight of launching the self-titled perfume . “The best part was the fan interaction,” she told MTV News. “I was kind of nervous when the reaction of it would be because no one’s ever done that, to where people could go online and help create the fragrance. But I figure they’re the people that are going to wear it, so I want to see what’s kind of in, I guess, now. So that was the fun part.” Their feedback mostly focused on how they wanted to use the perfume practically in their everyday lives. “They just had really good points of like, ‘I can wear this to school’ and then another person’s like, ‘Actually, after the gym, going to like a date [or] something,'” she said of their suggestions. “They came up with the weirdest tactics that made sense and I was like, ‘Oh, I didn’t even think of it.’ They caught a lot of things. It was nice.” After some initial work on her own, Gomez took it to her fans to help her nail down the scent that’s now being sold in Macy’s department stores. “Well, I created the top five of them and then they helped pick out the bottom three,” she said. “It’s still very much me. I think it represents what I like. It’s refreshing and young, but it’s kind of older as well.” While the bottle is very feminine (a long, lavender-colored body with lips as a top), she added that the look is also practical. “I wanted the bottle to be tall ’cause I have a lot of fragrances and I always go to the ones that are the tallest and noticeable and pretty and delicate,” she explained. Gomez is the latest in a long list of celebrity perfume designers, joining the ranks of fellow singers like pal Taylor Swift (with Wonderstruck ) and boyfriend Justin Bieber (with Someday ). ‘Saturday Night Live’ Will Have ‘Some’ Cast Changes

‘I’d like everyone to stay,’ Lorne Michaels says, addressing rumors that Kristen Wiig, Andy Samberg and Jason Sudeikis are leaving the show. By Jocelyn Vena Kristen Wiig and Darrell Hammond on “Saturday Night Live” Photo: NBC Last month, there were rumors that “Saturday Night Live” standouts Kristen Wiig, Andy Samberg and Jason Sudeikis might not be back for another season of the late-night staple. Wiig teased her possible exit in an interview with Alec Baldwin, while Samberg and Sudeikis have remained tight-lipped on their rumored departures. On Wednesday, during a conference call about this weekend’s Eli Manning/ Rihanna episode , the show’s boss, Lorne Michaels, confirmed there would be some cast shakeups next season but didn’t specify how they would take shape. “I’m not really certain myself,” he told reporters when asked whether there would be any exits. “I know there will be some, but it’s just sort of the nature of the way we work that no one kind of talks about it until the season’s done. Needless to say, I’d like everyone to stay. Did that avoid that question successfully?” While he didn’t want to fully commit to commenting on the future of the three actors on “SNL,” he did share that fresh meat would be brought in to liven up the cast for next season. “Every summer, we go out and make the rounds of Chicago and L.A. and New York and various other places where people do this kind of work, and invariably that leads to somebody joining [the cast],” he teased. “The show has always been about bringing new people in.” With the season nearing an end, fans might not have to wait much longer to find out who will stay and who will go. But before any announcements are made, it seems the show has plans for this season to wrap with a bang. Per the show’s Twitter page, Will Ferrell and Usher will be on hand for the May 11 episode and Mick “Moves Like” Jagger will pull double-duty on the May 19 season finale. iCarly ‘Crushing On A Geeky Guy’ On Next Episode

‘There’s a twist at the end,’ Miranda Cosgrove teases MTV News of new show, airing Saturday at 8 p.m. ET on Nickelodeon. By Jocelyn Vena Miranda Cosgrove on the set of “iCarly” Photo: MTV News This week’s episode of “iCarly” is taking a stab at the world of computer sales at an Apple-esque store. If that doesn’t sound like a fascinating plotline, the cast assures fans that there will be zany antics, some friendly rivalry and even some romance. We bet you never thought all that intrigue could squeeze its way in there! “Today, we are on the set of ‘iCarly’ and we are shooting some scenes for an episode called ‘I Work for Pear,’ ” Jennette McCurdy, who plays Sam, told MTV News about the episode. “[My character] Sam ends up getting hired for the job, because she’s so good with the customers and at selling things. Mad trouble ensues because Freddie’s mad at Sam. Sam’s not meant to work. “The Sam and Freddie relationship has been explored on many fronts,” McCurdy continued about her link to Nathan Kress’ character. “There was the first few seasons where they were bickering constantly, and then there was some touching on a relationship, which, let me tell you, was a real treat for us … it wasn’t awkward at all,” she joked about their brother/sister relationship. It seems that Kress was hoping to escape to the Pear store to indulge in his love for computers. “I can’t really think of any better place for Freddie to go since he’s such a computer nerd than to be at the mecca of computer-nerd salesmen,” he said. “There’s some really big complicated scenes, because all of us are there, but we each have our own story lines.” For the show’s leading lady, Miranda Cosgrove, she notes that Carly Shaw found something other than computers to keep her intrigued at Pear. “In this episode of ‘iCarly,’ Freddie gets a job at the Pear store, and shortly after, he’s absolutely in shock, because he finds out that Sam gets a job at the Pear store as well,” she said. “My part on the episode is, I’m crushing on a geeky guy who’s really sweet, and then there’s a twist at the end.” While she couldn’t say what the twist is, Noah Munck, who plays Gibby, had this guarantee: “It is definitely a hilarious episode.” The show airs Saturday night at 8 p.m. Are you looking forward to a trip to the “iCarly” Pear store? Usher Says ‘Scream’ Is ‘Just In Time For Summer’

Following ‘Climax,’ singer tells MTV News his latest single ‘represents the other side’ of Looking for Myself album. By Jocelyn Vena Usher Photo: MTV News Bumping beats, sexy lyrics and Usher ‘s signature R&B bad-boy swagger can only mean one thing: the singer has once again hooked up with superstar pop producer Max Martin. Their latest collaboration, “Scream,” picks up where “DJ Got Us Fallin’ in Love” left off back in 2010. Usher used that track to convince us to go home with him after a dizzying night of partying, and for “Scream,” he’s got us back at his pad and he’s rocking our world, one fist-pumping moment at a time. While he opted to slow it down on “Climax,” Usher is back to large-scale dance tracks on Looking for Myself ‘s second single. And, he told MTV News, both tracks reflect the sound of the album. “This album has many different views and many different perspectives,” he told MTV News while rehearsing for his one-night run as the lead in NYC’s off-Broadway spectacle “Fuerza Bruta,” which also served as a place for Usher to debut the album ahead of its release. “And me and Max Martin, we’ve had success together in the past, and this was a record I felt represented the other side of the [album].” “Scream” and “Climax” truly are polar-opposite tracks. Where “Climax” sears and broods, “Scream” celebrates and dances. Usher is excited for the chance to show all those sides with the two lead singles from the June 12 release. “Whereas the first song was a little bit more artistic and a little bit more soulful, and it has done everything, it probably exceeded my expectations, I mean, from the moment I was able to give it away. I was able to kind of be reintroduced in a way musically, and thank you to [producer] Diplo, but ‘Scream’ is really like the next step. It’s just in time for summer and the type of experience that I want people to get out of the album.” But the Atlanta-bred singer notes that the album can’t be defined just by “Climax” or “Scream.” There’s a lot there to keep fans tuning in. “It’s a ton of other experiences and a ton of other walks … as I’ve had this long journey over the last year [and] every bit of what I’ve experienced I’ve put into a creative, artistic way,” he said. As for the video, well, that still has to be shot, but he joked that “Fuerza Bruta” might serve as the perfect backdrop for the clip — or maybe not. “We might be shooting it while we’re here,” he laughed. “This is like a movie set, damn near — sh– you don’t normally see with the launch of an album. This is pretty spectacular.” What are you expecting from Usher’s next album? Let us know in the comments!

John Mayer Leaves ‘Shadow Days’ Behind In New Video

Mayer road-trips through America in his Born and Raised clip. By Jocelyn Vena John Mayer in his music video for “Shadow Days” Photo: Columbia In his new “Shadow Days” music video , John Mayer is leaving behind the bright lights and hustle and bustle of the big city for something simpler. The video is a road trip, with Mayer dressed up as a cowboy, making his way across the heartland of our great country to just chill out and let it all go. It’s a completely uncomplicated premise. Mayer treks through snowy landscapes, small-town motels, deserts and mountains to just find himself and, as the song addresses, let his past go. He leads an unfussy life in the clip, as he travels from place to place, buying guitars, eating greasy food in diners and rocking a cowboy hat with the sort of sincerity only a few guitar-slinging pop stars can pull off. Not much happens in the clip, but that’s kind of the idea. The story is nothing more than Mayer driving across America. But the sun-drenched message, perhaps, is that Mayer is looking to something simpler these days, given how his personal life has had some turmoil. For a man who has a reputation for breaking starlets’ hearts and has battled vocal-cord issues , Mayer seems to want to change his story and redirect the conversation back to his music. While the video opened with shots of a cityscape in all its artificial glow, it closes on a denim-clad Mayer, walking alone near the side of an abandoned road with just the sun to keep him company. “Shadow Days” is the lead single from his next album, Born and Raised, due May 22. He had planned to tour in support of the album this spring but had to cancel after he learned he was still battling a granuloma growth on his vocal cords. This video might be the closest things fans will get to a Born and Raised Tour. What do you think of John’s latest video? Share your reviews in the comments!
