‘It’s totally exhilarating to see kids lined up outside,’ MC marvels on the day of his debut album’s release. By Steven Roberts Wiz Khalifa Photo: MTV News NEW YORK — A year ago, Wiz Khalifa was a relative unknown. Sure, Wiz was selling out shows, but outside his loyal Taylor Gang fanbase, he wasn’t a household name. That all changed with the release of his breakout mixtape, Kush & Orange Juice, and the anthemic single “Black and Yellow.” Fast-forward 10 months, and Khalifa’s major-label debut, Rolling Papers, is in a battle for the week’s #1 release against Snoop Dogg and Britney Spears. MTV News caught up with Khalifa on Tuesday afternoon (March 29) for his in-store at Best Buy in Union Square, and even he was shocked to see fans lined up around the block. “It’s totally exhilarating to see kids lined up outside, screaming, wanting the album and purchasing the album,” Khalifa marveled. “It was actually like a year ago that I first started working on the album. “I didn’t really know where I was going, but I knew I was going somewhere,” he continued. “To have it done and to see the full vision and for people to be excited about it and the entire buildup, it’s just really magnificent.” Plenty of excited — but also laid-back, of course — Wiz fans waited outside Best Buy for a chance to meet Khalifa and get his autograph. Many of them came out on Monday night to buy the album at midnight and receive a wristband to meet Wiz on Tuesday. “I love that kid, no lie. I don’t know that kid personally, but when I greeted him, I was in the zone,” fan Daniel Candelairo told MTV News. “I’ve been listening to him since ’07, so unlike most people out here claiming Taylor Gang — I’m not into all of that. I just listen to his music and I promote him.” Candelairo recalled catching flak for being a Wiz fan back in the day, but he’s enjoyed the turnaround. “He’s blowing. Everybody loves this kid,” he said. “It’s awesome. I’m proud of him.” Have you checked out Wiz’s debut album yet? Share your reviews in the comments! Related Artists Wiz Khalifa

Lupe Fiasco Talks Spring Break Performance

The Chicago rapper’s Las Vegas spring break gig airs Tuesday night on MTV. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Sway Calloway Lupe Fiasco Photo: MTV News When you combine spring break and Las Vegas, things are bound to get exciting — or out of control. For the MTV Spring Break 2011 performers — Snoop Dogg, Wiz Khalifa, Pitbull and Lupe Fiasco — the challenge is to keep the crowds entertained when shots, lost tops and sunny weather threaten to steal their attention. According to Lupe Fiasco, though, it doesn’t matter to him whether he’s performing at a spring break gig or a room of Timberland-wearing concertgoers — the show goes on. “It’s no different,” the Chicago rapper told MTV News recently. “I did a show for the hardcore [fans] yesterday and it was the same thing. The same energy. At the end of the day, it’s about getting in touch with the energy — I don’t want to sound too mystical — but that human energy. It don’t matter if you black, white, Italian, Asian or in a bikini or have a fitted hat on thugged out, everybody wants to hear something and be moved by something, so for us, we want to take it to you as energetic as we possibly can.” On Monday, Wiz Khalifa’s MTV Spring Break 2011 performance aired as the Pittsburgh star hit the stage for his breakout tune “Black and Yellow.” Later in the week, Snoop Dogg and Pitbull’s spring break performances will be shown on MTV, MTV2 and mtvU. Catch Lupe Fiasco performing in Las Vegas during MTV’s Spring Break on Tuesday night (March 29) on MTV at 9:50 p.m. ET. Snoop Dogg And Wiz Khalifa Boast About Their Stashes In ‘The Weed Iz Mine’

Track is from their upcoming movie ‘High School.’ By Jayson Rodriguez Snoop Dogg and Wiz Khalifa Photo: MTV News Snoop Dogg and Wiz Khalifa aren’t at odds on their new track, but the lyricists draw the line at partaking in their recreational activities without chipping in. On the latest track from their forthcoming movie “High School,” Snoop and Wiz retool Brandy and Monica’s “The Boy Is Mine” and Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney’s “The Girl Is Mine” into an ode to — what else? — their favorite environmental supplement. “The Weed Iz Mine” features both rappers boasting about their pot stashes. “I hear n—-s talk about what they rolling up,” Wiz spits on the synth-heavy number. “Smell what I smoke ‘fore the bag open up.” “This is church music, listen to the choir,” Snoop raps. “To burn my kush you must use fire.” Late last year, the veteran MC and the upstart lyricist announced they were teaming up for a movie and soundtrack venture called “High School.” “We decided to go ahead and say, ‘You know what? Let’s do a movie and a soundtrack and just become, you know, bosom buddies and do what we do ’cause we love what we do and we love each other and at the same time we know what the people want,’ ” Snoop Dogg said . “The people want to see the two generations come together where hip-hop ain’t about old school and new school. It’s just about good music and making good moves and putting something out there that’s classic where people can respect it and say, ‘Yeah, so now, this was some gangsta sh– that really made hip-hop gradually grow to another level.’ ” Related Artists Snoop Dogg Wiz Khalifa

And while it is impossible to ignore his reported outburst backstage, following a line of questioning about Rihanna, the music is still worth talking about too. Wiz Khalifa Says ‘Taylor Gang’ Is ‘Not A Departure’

Rapper responds to critics who say he’s gotten aggressive: ‘I don’t do anything that’s inappropriate for my style.’ By James Montgomery Wiz Khalifa Photo: MTV News AUSTIN, Texas — In recent months, first with the chart-topping success of “Black and Yellow” and then with his underground hit “Taylor Gang,” Wiz Khalifa seems to have gotten aggressive, a move that some see as a departure from his stony, laconic roots. But Wiz is not one of them. ” ‘Taylor Gang’ is not a departure for me or my style. Anybody who’s been connected to my whole career, they know the variations of where I go and my beat selections,” he told MTV News backstage at the Woodie Awards during South by Southwest. “Lex [Luger, who produced ‘Taylor Gang’] has been a real big fan since back in the day, and I’ve been up on his music for a long time as well, so it’s just been bound to happen. He’s a great guy and he’s really talented, so it’s just good to see him getting the shine he deserves.” And to anyone who still doesn’t agree with him, Wiz would like to point out that he’s actually been working with Luger for a while now — he produced a handful of songs on Wiz’s Cabin Fever mixtape — and that he wouldn’t sign on to work with anyone if he doesn’t feel like it would complement his music. “I just find that little pocket where it matches up. I don’t feel like I do anything that’s inappropriate for my style, and he’s always going to stay consistent as well,” he said. “So when we meet up, you know, that’s when it makes that magic. Cabin Fever has, like, six songs from Lex Luger on there, and people love that tape.” And with his hotly anticipated Rolling Papers album set to hit stores March 29, Khalifa said he’s hoping fans won’t bail on him just because he’s gotten a bit aggro as of late. Though, if they do, he’ll still continue doing what he does. “It’s definitely aggressive, but I’ve got songs on the album like ‘On My Level,’ ‘Black and Yellow’ is not really a calm song, so … they’ve got to keep listening,” he smiled. “Or, you know, they can stick there, but at the end of the day I know what I’m doing.” What do you think of Wiz’s new music? B.o.B Plays The Hits, Wiz Khalifa Pays Tribute To Nate Dogg At SXSW

Janelle Monae also wowed audience on Thursday at Atlantic Records’ showcase in Austin, Texas. By James Montgomery B.o.B performs at SXSW on Thursday Photo: Getty Images AUSTIN, Texas — If you decide to call your South by Southwest showcase “Killers Lasers Papers,” and then find out, much to your dismay, that neither the Killer (Cee Lo Green, whose 2010 album is called The Lady Killer ) or the Laser ( Lupe Fiasco, whose Lasers currently sits atop the Billboard albums chart) are actually going to show up, what do you do? Well, if you’re Atlantic Records, you simply plug in another of your chart-topping stars, add your critically acclaimed futurist-funk chanteuse and keep right on trucking. Things are that easy for the label these days. So, on Thursday night at Austin’s La Zona Rosa, instead of Green and Fiasco, SXSW-ers were treated to semi-surprise sets from B.o.B and Janelle Mon

Does Amber Rose Have A Gut Full Of Butt Growing In The… Front?!?!

From the front view we can tell that she has missed a lunge or two but now we have a side view of her and Wiz Khalifa at the MTV Woodie Awards … Looks Like a Case of Booty-Do It’s not that bad especially since she probably could get rid of it in a couple of crunches but still… This little speed bump is not apart of the package that put her on the map in the banging a** body department! Wiz may sit around all day smoking weed and getting the munchies but you, Amber,… you’re one doughnut away… Just One!!!

Wiz Khalifa’s ‘The Race’ Hits The Net

Pittsburgh rapper recently described laid-back single to MTV News as a ‘swag song.’ By Jayson Rodriguez Wiz Khalifa Photo: MTV News Wiz Khalifa’s Rolling Papers is arriving song-by-song ahead of its March 29 release date. The latest record to spring forth onto the Web is “The Race,” a breezy number about the Pittsburgh rapper’s rise to the top. “I’m in the race and taking the winner’s place,” Wiz says, delivering the hook in his trademark melodic flourish over I.D. Labs’ production work. “No foot on the breaks/ One of the best homey, that’s what they call me/ It’s lonely at the top, ain’t no company/ So now I just stunt on my own, I just stunt on my own.” Last year, Wiz described the track as a “swag song,” calling it “an attitude, ‘doing what we do’-type thing,” he explained. “Every song, they were like, ‘Man, this is going to the radio. You could go to the radio with that,’ ” Wiz said when he previewed the collection for a select group in Los Angeles. “So they are good songs, but they are also songs that are going to be accepted widely.” “I’ve got to stick to what I know, what I’ve been doing,” he added. “My main producers have been doing the bulk of the album, and it’s majority done. We’re just doing the big songs now, putting some of the features together, but really, it’s more personal. You get to see me and feel me more as a person, but it’s still that same edgy, that same rawness that people dig.” What do you think of Wiz’s new song, “The Race”? Let us know in the comments!
