‘The Dark Knight Rises’ Final Theatrical Trailer

The Dark Knight Rises Viral Campaign Harnesses the Power of Graffiti

With The Dark Knight Rises release fast approaching, Warner Bros. has launched their latest bit of buzz-driving viral marketing by teasing a brand-new trailer for the July release. But in order to see that trailer, Bat-fans must first “help” the Gotham City Police Department “find” Batman by tracking hundreds of pieces of Bat-graffiti strategically placed around the world; for each bit of graffiti located and tagged via social media, Warner Bros. will unveil the new trailer one frame at a time . Graffiti: it’s not just for Oscar-nominees anymore! Tucked away in a dossier containing Batman’s GCPD criminal file (posted to TheDarkKnightRises.com ) are documents detailing where Batman stands following the events of The Dark Knight : Namely, at the top of the city’s hit list, having taken the rap for murder, kidnapping, and aggravated assault. In a viral call to action cleverly disguised as a police memo, “officers” (that’s you, Bat-fans) are directed to find pieces of pro-Batman graffiti stenciled across Gotham City (that’s every box office-targeted metropolis, right?) in an effort to stamp out grassroots support for the caped crusader. “Officers should also be directed to report any and all information pertaining to the investigation to the designated contact (#tdkr07202012 or tdkr07202012@gothampolicedepartment.com). This includes submitting photographic evidence of graffiti related to any movement in support of the vigilante’s return so we can suppress it before it becomes a problem. Officers should make sure that location services or store location is on in their camera settings.” The campaign has already unlocked a number of frames from the trailer (see below, courtesy Coming Soon): I’m sure Warner Bros. doesn’t endorse graffiti — except in bat form, and leading up to July 20, 2012, and in chalk, of course. And it’s a brilliant way to get fans in a tizzy over seeing a trailer ONE FREAKING FRAME AT A TIME. But isn’t this guy who shaved the Bat-signal into his facial hair (via Reddit) just as effective a piece of viral marketing? Move over, Movember! It’s time for… Bat-stache-uly? [via Coming Soon ]

The Muppets 2 Will Be a Comedy Caper, Says Nick Stoller

Nick Stoller took a moment while promoting his Five-Year Engagement to fuel speculation about the forthcoming (and Jason Segel -less) Muppets sequel, which he says Disney rather unrealistically wanted to release next summer. “It is a comedy caper,” he spilled to Collider . This sounds familiar — next stop Manhattan, Treasure Island and then, perhaps… space? “I think it’s similar to the first one in that the first one certainly had dramatic connections to the first Muppet movie, but it was a whole new thing, hopefully,” Stoller told Collider. “This is the same thing. We love The Great Muppet Caper and we love Muppets Take Manhattan and whatnot. So this has some elements of that, but it’s different because it’s in the tone of what James and I like to do.” Grain of salt: Stoller and co-writer/ Muppets director James Bobin are only 13 pages into their Muppets sequel, so, you know. If they don’t even know yet if there’s room for a Segel cameo, it’s hard to say now how the final product will turn out. That said, the Muppets sure knew how to throw a fun caper and the idea of the rebooted Muppets franchise following in the footsteps of the classic Muppets films falls in step with the spirit of reinvention and homage that made 2011’s a hit . VIDEO: Texas Cops Let Sick 7-Year-Old Play Batman For a Day

This is probably the best unauthorized viral marketing that The Dark Knight Rises could ever hope for: Authorities in Arlington, Texas, yesterday fulfilled a 7-year-old leukemia patient’s wish to be Batman for a day. Yes, there’s video, and yes, it’s awesome. No, it wasn’t shot in IMAX , and the press on the scene do wander in and out of frame. Production values schmoduction values But as charitable public services -meet-large-scale cultural tributes go, it’s pretty adorable. Little Batman and Robin! Also: The Joker is kinda good, no? Anyway, at least stay around for the unmasking. Sniff . [via Gawker ]

‘Hunger Games’ Shoots Down All-Time Records

After spending an elusive third straight week at #1, ‘The Hunger Games’ now ranks among the biggest box-office successes in history. By Kevin P. Sullivan Josh Hutcherson in “The Hunger Games” Photo: Lionsgate For the third weekend in a row, “The Hunger Games” proved its power as a serious box-office champion. Two competitors stood a chance to take the top spot, but both “American Reunion” and “Titanic 3D” fell short, leaving “The Hunger Games” at the top with earnings of nearly $303 million since its debut. Now that “The Hunger Games” has racked up its third consecutive weekend at #1, it seems like an appropriate time to see where the film stands among the all-time box-office champs, what records have been broken and what records still stand. Consecutive Weekends With so many movies coming out each week, it’s often difficult for a film to retain the top spot in its second weekend, let alone its third. Repeat weekends have become a mark of true success at the box office and signs of a real hit. With this weekend, “The Hunger Games” became the first film in 2012 to spend three straight weeks at #1. The most recent movie to achieve that was “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1” back in November of last year. Versus “Twilight” Speaking of the vampire romance series, “The Hunger Games” officially passed the highest-grossing film in “The Twilight Saga,” “Eclipse.” The third “Twilight” movie grossed just over $300 million, right behind where “The Hunger Games” stands after its third weekend. Many had compared the two series throughout the lead-up to “The Hunger Games,” but since its debut “The Hunger Games” has thrived off word-of-mouth and a larger male audience than “Twilight.” Champion of 2012 Right from the start of the summer movie season, the biggest tentpole films of the year already have a film to beat. “The Hunger Games” is far and away the highest money earner of the year so far. Its total gross currently stands roughly $104 million ahead of its closest competition, “Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax.” The toughest competition has yet to come, however. With releases like “The Avengers,” “The Dark Knight Rises” and the first “Hobbit” still on the lineup for 2012, it will be difficult for “The Hunger Games” to hold onto that spot. Opening Week So much of the “Hunger Games” buzz came from its enormous opening weekend, the third best of all time behind “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2” and “The Dark Knight.” With a $152 million bow, it also ranks as the best March and spring opening ever. All Time Granted the movie is only three weeks old, “The Hunger Games” still has a long way to go before ranking among the highest earners of all time. It currently stands at #37 behind “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.” Do you think “The Hunger Games” will be the highest-grossing film of 2012, or will “The Dark Knight Rises” take the glory? ‘Dark Knight Rises’ Rated PG-13 For ‘Some Sensuality’

MPAA’s ratings explanation offers hints at Bruce Wayne’s relationships with Selina Kyle and Talia al Ghul. By Kevin P. Sullivan Tom Hardy as Bane in “The Dark Knight Rises” Photo: Warner Bros. Pictures With a little more than three months to go until the release of Christopher Nolan ‘s final Batman film, describing the fans as starved for information would be a criminal understatement. We are now at the point where any intel about ” The Dark Knight Rises ” is scrutinized beyond recognition. The latest piece of info to analyze comes from the Motion Picture Association of America. The MPAA bestowed a PG-13 rating upon “The Dark Knight Rises,” the same rating given to ” Batman Begins ” and ” The Dark Knight .” The rating appeared on the Warner Bros. exhibitor services site with a brief explanation for the classification. “PG-13 for intense sequences of violence and action, some sensuality and language,” the site reads. The specifics of the rating are where the conclusion of the trilogy differs from the previous two installments. “Batman Begins” was PG-13 for “intense action violence, disturbing images and some thematic elements.” “The Dark Knight” earned the same rating for “intense sequences of violence and some menace.” The big difference here is the phrase “some sensuality,” but the addition makes sense based on what we’ve seen from the film so far and what we know about the characters. Both Selina Kyle and, as most people assume by now, Talia al Ghul are in the film and have had physical relationships with Bruce Wayne in the comic books. With “The Dark Knight Rises” taking place seven years after the events of “The Dark Knight,” Bruce may be back on the market for the first time since Rachel blew up. “Some sensuality” indeed. ‘Dark Knight Rises’: Are the Odds In Batman’s Favor?

We’re raising the stakes and placing big bets in The Weekly Rising. By Kevin P. Sullivan Christian Bale on the set of “The Dark Knight Rises” Photo: Getty Images Are you a betting man, or do you make your own luck like Harvey Dent? We’re a little more than three months away from ” The Dark Knight Rises ,” the grand finale to Christopher Nolan ‘s Batman trilogy, and with so much of the world looking forward to the film and taking wide, sweeping guesses at what could possibility unfold, it’s time we all put our money where our mouth is. (What’s the fun of wild speculation if you’re not going to lay a little money on the line, right?) Who’s going to be the lucky girl to land the Batman? Who’s coming back to life? And who’s on their way out? We’ve done the gambling men and women out there a favor by breaking down the odds for what’s likely to happen in “The Dark Knight Rises”: There’s a Talia Hookup, 4:6 Now that we know about the PG-13 rating for “some sensuality,” it seems pretty clear that Bruce Wayne is going to get some rebound action from either one of the two female supporting characters. But which one will it be? The trailer puts both Miranda Tate Talia Al Ghul and Selina Kyle in — let’s say — sensual positions next to Bruce, but Marion Cotillard ‘s character gets the edge. She seems flirty with her masquerade mask in the trailer, but not quite up in there like Anne Hathaway . Talia, however, is the odds-on favorite because of her comic book history with Batman. They have a kid together in the books, plus she’s clearly going to betray him in “Rises.” A night of passionate romance will only make her turn that much more bitter. There’s a Selina Hookup, 4:1 Catwoman’s storied back-and-forth, will-they-won’t-they history with Batman makes a first-date hookup unlikely. It’s the same reason you should never kill the Joker in a Batman movie; there’s still so much to do. (I’m looking at you, Tim Burton.) Kyle and Wayne’s interactions are defined by sexual tension, so even if this is the end of the series, a “close but no cigar” scenario is much more likely than “some sensuality” between the Cat and the Bat. Ra’s Al Ghul Is Alive, 3:2 It’s one of the most hotly debated topics in recent weeks. With the official addition of Liam Neeson to the cast, Ra’s Al Ghul is back on the table as a potential villain for the Nolan Batman movie. Ra’s in the comics has made a hobby of returning from the dead, so a resurrection isn’t out of the question. This is Nolan’s Gotham, however, so something as out-there as resurrection might be too much for the more realistic vision of the world. A flashback or hallucination is much more likely, but this is all based on the assumption that Ra’s ever died. Bane Dies, 9:1 I know, I know. Batman is a sworn non-lethal crime fighter. He’s gone two movies without technically killing anyone. (Isn’t letting someone die almost as bad?) But like a video game boss, Bane comes with an obvious, built-in weakness. His giant eyeball, in this case, is his respirator. We know from the prologue that if the mask is removed, it will be very painful for Bane. If the mercenary has a physical advantage over Batman in hand-to-hand combat, the edge the Caped Crusader will gain has to come from removing that mask. The rule of Chekhov’s gun states, “One must not put a loaded rifle on the stage if no one is thinking of firing it.” In the case of “Rises,” one must not put a pain-reducing mask on the stage if no one is thinking of removing it. Batman Dies, 1:1 This is the real wild card. The question here is “How far will Nolan go?” We know that he’s going to push Batman to the brink and that, according to the posters, legend is supposed to “end.” Is it possible that Nolan will sacrifice Wayne to prove how strong of a symbol the Batman really is? At this point, there’s no way to say, so for the time being, I wouldn’t put down any money on the fate of Bruce Wayne. Batman will certainly survive; the man beneath the mask is a different story. Robin Shows Up, 1,000,000:1 Not gonna happen. What bets would you put down for “The Dark Knight Rises”? Let me know via Twitter @KPSull and we’ll discuss later in the week!
