He’s taken out the Penguin and The Joker (twice!), but will Batman be able to do away with The Avengers? That’s what many film fans are now wondering, as they anticipate the July 20 release of The Dark Knight Rises and wonder whether it can out-earn the first official blockbuster of the summer movie season. If not, it certainly won’t be for a lack of promotion. New Dark Knight Rises posters hit the Web this week, and now a pair of fresh TV spots are making the rounds. Aside from Christian Bale, of course, they gives us a look at Tom Hardy, Michael Caine, and Morgan Freeman. The Dark Knight Rises , The Twilight Saga will see your new TV spots and raise you a trio of exciting posters for Breaking Dawn Part 2 . The film comes out on November 16, 2012, which is clearly stated on all three photos – but we understand if you miss those numbers, considering the faces also featured below: Those of Taylor Lautner, Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson . Click through and ogle away now: We’re still a couple months away from major promotional efforts revving up in honor of this final installment, but Summit Entertainment has at least unveiled a teaser Breaking Dawn trailer that depicts Bella as a vampire. Look for the cast to be on hand this July at San Diego Comic-Con and for THG to be live with a full report. Until then, take comfort in the simple tagline on these posters. When his last possession, his car, is stolen by a gang of dangerous criminals, Eric sets off to track them down and is forced along the way to enlist the help of Reynolds, the naïve simpleton member of the gang left behind in the bloody chaos of the gang’s most recent escape.” Guy Pearce and Robert Pattinson are said to be in talks for the roles of Eric and Reynolds, respectively. Another Chris Nolan Batman movie poster, another juxtaposition of the Gotham City skyline in disarray featuring the Bat-symbol carved artfully in the air out of debris and angsty madness — this time, with more Batman! Get a gander at the new Batsplosion-ey poster for The Dark Knight Rises , which hits July 20 promising that “A Fire Will Rise.” (In your pants, amirite?) A second tagline also gives the poster a feeling of baddie Bane’s presence, even if he’s nowhere to be found: “The Legend Ends…” Or maybe that’s just Nolan’s way of telling us he’s almost done with his superhero opus. Another Monday morning, and thus another look at what carnage The Avengers has wrought at the weekend box office. And while things aren’t as bad as they may look at first for Battleship and the rest of the competition, they’re not what you’d call pretty. Your Weekend Receipts are here. 1. The Avengers Gross: $55,057,000 ($457,078,000) Screens: 4,249 (PSA $12,958) Weeks: 3 (Change: -46.6%) Marvel’s megahit settled into No. 10 all-time in terms of domestic gross, No. 6 all-time in terms of global gross, and became the highest-grossing US release ever for Disney… in three weeks . It should wind up in top three in all the major box-office categories by the time it’s done, leaving unanswered only the question of where it will stand two months from now against The Dark Knight Rises . Which I’m sure is a question you are very much preoccupying yourself with. Anyway, hats off to all. 2. Battleship Gross: $25,300,000 (new) Screens: 3,690 (PSA: $6,856) Weeks: 1 Did Hasbro and Universal want a better domestic turnout for their huge-budget board-game spectacular? Of course they did. Is this the worst-case scenario for either/or/both? Hardly, especially after a foreign run that has already pulled in $215 million. John Carter it’s not , though don’t be surprised if you happen to see at least one head rolling around the studio lot sometime in the next or two. Whose will it be? Place your wager in the comments! 3. The Dictator Gross: $17,415,000 ($24,456,000) Screens: 3,008 (PSA $5,790) Weeks: 1 On the one hand, not a terrible showing on a congested weekend for an R-rated comedy full of Sacha Baron Cohen’s usual shtick. On the other, shtick aside, we finally get an original script not based on a board-game, a self-help book, a ’60s TV show, etc., and it lurches quietly into third place. I feel like we need to support these things on principle, folks. So what if you only laugh four times in 80 minutes? It’s better than throwing up in your mouth four times or renouncing moviegoing altogether, no? OK, don’t answer that. 4. Dark Shadows Gross: $12,770,000 ($50,908,000) Screens: 3,755 (PSA $3,401) Weeks: 2 (Change: -57.0%) Oy: A 57 percent drop in week two for a Johnny Depp film — his worst since Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End plunged 61.5 percent in 2007. Of course, that was after a $139 million Memorial Day opening , so… yeah. Perspective. Not good. 5. The Weekly Rising takes a closer look at the comic inspiration for Christopher Nolan’s final Batman film. By Kevin P. Sullivan Batman #497: The breaking of the Bat Photo: DC Comics Throughout his tenure as the commander of the big-screen Batman, Christopher Nolan , along with writing partners Jonathan Nolan and David S. Goyer, have pulled selectively from the vast library of books for inspiration in the films. “Batman Begins” borrowed a handful of elements from Frank Miller’s “Batman: Year One,” while “The Dark Knight” took some character notes from “The Long Halloween.” When it was announced that Bane would make his triumphant return as a respectable villain in the finale, ” The Dark Knight Rises ,” comic books fans were just as quick to shout “Knightfall,” in reference to the trilogy of stories that played out during 1993 and 1994. It appeared Nolan and company had found their inspiration, but what exactly would they use from those books? Bane The masked villain was the clear giveaway to “Knightfall” ‘s presence as an influence, and it’s clear why. Bane only showed up on the DC Comics scene four months before the beginning of the “Knightfall” story line, and once the show got on the road, he made his introduction count. As he appears to be in “The Dark Knight Rises,” the Bane of the comics was a hyper-intelligent behemoth of a man, capable of besting Bruce Wayne. Prison Break Part of Bane’s plan in gaining the upper hand over Batman involved releasing all of Arkham Asylum’s worst inmates on the city. Batman wears himself down, rounding up the likes of the Joker, the Scarecrow and Poison Ivy, and this series of bouts leaves him severely weakened when he finally has to face off against Bane in the Batcave, leading to the most significant scene from “Knightfall.” The Break If Bane is remembered for anything, it is the central moment of “Knightfall” when he takes a physically and mentally exhausted Bruce Wayne and breaks his back with a knee to the spine. It was a critical blow in more than one sense of the word and significantly changed the shape of the Batman titles for years to come. The scant footage we have actually seen from “The Dark Knight Rises” hints that Christian Bale ‘s Bruce Wayne does suffer some similar injury during the course of the film. He appears to be walking with a cane, and while we can’t conclusively blame Bane, the timing sure is something! Catwoman Selina Kyle’s appearance in both “Knightfall” and “The Dark Knight Rises” most likely is a coincidence, since her role in the former is not terribly significant. It does matter, however, that she attempts to help Bruce Wayne with his paralysis, demonstrating that there are many facets to her allegiances. The New Batman While Bruce Wayne was on the mend thanks to Bane’s handiwork, a new Batman, Jean-Paul Valley, took up the cowl in his absence. Since the tag line of “The Dark Knight Rises” leaves little doubt that the “legend ends” with this final movie, fans have been pondering whether the new film will mean the death of Bruce Wayne. If that’s the case, the symbol would have to live on. A new Dark Knight would have to rise. Box-office expert looks at possible competition from ‘Dark Knight Rises,’ ‘Amazing Spider-Man’ and more. By Kara Warner Chris Evans, and Scarlett Johansson in “Avengers” Photo: Marvel Studios Now that so many of us have seen “Marvel’s The Avengers” and helped make it this summer’s box-office blockbuster to beat , it’s time to look ahead at the rest of the season’s cinematic offerings to see which tentpole has the power to compete with Earth’s mightiest heroes. The likeliest contender competing for some of the “Avengers”-size box-office haul is “The Dark Knight Rises,” Christopher Nolan’s dark, brooding, third and supposedly final Batman movie. Other buzz-worthy potential moneymakers to keep an eye on are Ridley Scott’s “Alien”-esque prequel “Prometheus,” Marc Webb’s “The Amazing Spider-Man,” Rupert Sanders’ “Snow White and the Huntsman” and Barry Sonnenfeld’s “Men in Black 3.” To be fair, the “Avengers” haul is going to be very difficult to duplicate, particularly the record-breaking opening-weekend take of $207.1 million, which beat the $169.2 million set by previous champ “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2,” MTV News consulted Boxoffice.com editor Phil Contrino for his wisdom on the subject and to see if any other summer fare has a chance at besting the records set by “Avengers.” “I don’t think anything other than ‘Dark Knight Rises’ can pull it off,” Contrino said. “With ‘Spider-Man,’ every time a franchise is rebooted, it takes a while for the fans to dip their toes in the water and get a feel for it. ‘Spider-Man’ will be the same thing, maybe worse, because it’s so close to the [release] of the original. ‘X-Men: First Class’ and even ‘Batman Begins’ didn’t open to huge numbers, and a lot of people forget that. ‘Prometheus’ is [rated] R. For an R-rated movie to do $200 million would be something really monumental, almost impossible, I think.” Contrino went on to say that “Dark Knight Rises” has a couple of factors that will prevent it from catching “Avengers,” but that it does have a chance of besting the #2 best opening-weekend gross set by “Deathly Hallows, Part 2.” “It’s not in 3-D, so it doesn’t have the bonus financial boost, and it’s not nearly as family-friendly; it’s dark and broody. Disney did a good job of turning ‘Avengers’ into a family-friendly movie.
