Black Girl Magic: Amandla Stenberg Gets Interviewed By Solange For Teen VOGUE & Say THIS About Kylie Jenner Cornrows…

A little Friday black girl magic… Amandla Stenberg Covers Teen VOGUE Actress Amandla Stenberg is Teen VOGUE’s latest cover girl and is sharing her Black Girl magic with the world. The 17-year-old “Hunger Games” star who caused a stir when s he blasted Kylie Jenner for rocking cornrows, sat down with her fellow “nonconforming black girl” Solange for her VOGUE shoot and dished on natural hair and her Niobe: She Is Life? comic book. She also used her time with Teen VOGUE to come out as bisexual. On her hair and that Kylie Jenner cornrow controversy: SOLANGE: Does it feel like sometimes you’re just exhausted talking about it? AMANDLA: Yo — yes! It’s so funny. I have many white friends who come up to me and they’re like, “Amandla, so this weekend I’m going to go out, and I was wondering if it’s OK if I could wear cornrows just on Saturday?” [Laughs] I’m tired of talking about who can have whichever style. Because I’ve said my thing. SOLANGE: Yeah, you made it clear in your video. It was so articulate and perfectly put! AMANDLA: It was when I was 12 and I got cast in The Hunger Games, and people called me the N-word and said that the death of my character, Rue, would be less sad because I was black. That was the first moment I realized being black was such a crucial part of my identity in terms of the way that I was perceived and how it would affect any line of work that I wanted to pursue. I often find myself in situations where I am the token black person. It can feel like this enormous weight. I have definitely had moments when my hair felt too big or like I needed to make myself…SOLANGE: Smaller. AMANDLA: Exactly. Smaller and easier to digest. On her comic book: SOLANGE: So what’s the deal with your comic book, Niobe: She Is Life? It’s sitting right here. It looks incredible. AMANDLA: Thank you! Growing up, I was always super into fantasy and The Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones and all of that, but I could never find black characters whom I really liked. And so immediately I identified with Niobe, the lead character. She’s this rad black girl elf. It’s interesting because it is fantasy, but it’s also really kind of self-reflective. She’s finding her faith and finding her identity. And she’s going to keep growing until she becomes this warrior destined to unite the human world and the elf world. I think it’s officially the first comic book to be written by a black girl, starring a black girl [Niobe Ayutami], and illustrated by a black girl [Ashley A. Woods]. On her #SquadGoals friends like Willow Smith: AMANDLA: Oh, man. Well, Kiernan has been by my side since the beginning. Willow [Smith] is amazing. I feel like we were just meant to be friends. We were kind of vibing off each other from afar, and then she hit me up and was like, “Let’s hang out!” She has the most magnetic, radiant energy ever. Whenever we hang out we just laugh and we sing and we dance and we go hiking. Solange has since given Amandla a shoutout on her Instagram. There's a secret language between black girls destined to move mountains and cross rivers when the world sometimes tells you to belong to the valleys that surround you. You learn it very young, and it has no words, but you hear it and see it all around you. You sense it when you walk into rooms, your hair elevated with every exalted coil, your sway a little too swift, and your shoulders a little too proud. You feel it like a rhythm you can’t shake if you even dared to quiet the sounds around you. Amandla (@amandlastenberg) knows it all too well, “I think that when you’re a black girl and you grow up you internalize all these messages. Everywhere you look that tell you that you shouldn’t accept your hair, or your natural features, or that you shouldn’t have a voice, or that you aren’t smart. In terms of my evolution I think those internalized messages built up in my mind until I was given the tools to recognize the situation. And understand that no, there’s nothing wrong with me, these are just that these are just messages that we’re fed. I feel like the best way to deal with that has been just to be myself and connect with all these other black girls who are awakening and realizing that they’ve been trying to conform; and the only way to fight that is to be themselves on the most genuine level. ” So here we are, connecting as non conforming black gals. Connecting as girls who recognize the borders that have been built around us, but tearing them down while coloring outside every line. Connecting as lovers of wearing the color sienna orange. Connecting as two chicks exhausted by talking about our hair, although we of course know, it's bad ass. Connecting as humans who are both trying to figure out the mathematics of composer Steve Reich's – “Violin Phase “. Connecting as two descendants of powerful Queens, who roamed the journey before us, and we hold the most high. I may not have felt prepared, but I sure as hell felt inspired, deeply moved by the honesty shared between us, and ready to take on the world sprinkling black girl magic in every crevice of the universe. -Solange Come soon ✨ A photo posted by Solange (@saintrecords) on Jan 6, 2016 at 1:05pm PST What do YOU think about Amandla and her Solange penned cover story??? America’s Favorite Family? New Report Shows That Mag Covers Featuring Kardashians And Jenners Sold Less

Kardashians Lower Magazine Sales Apparently the Kardashian’s golden touch is waning. The family that could sell just about anything is having a tough time selling magazines. Figures covered by WWD have found that even though the Kardashian Klan’s image can draw dollars for most brands and products…their faces on a magazine cover actually make readers less likely to snatch a mag up and take it home. Via Complex : Using data collected by Alliance for Audited, WWD found that when magazines featured members of the family on their covers, they experienced a decline in copy sales. Pretty shocking considering the slew of covers they landed this year. For example, during the first half of 2015, Cosmopolitan’s single-copy sales averaged 531,086. When Kendall Jenner took the cover for the magazine’s February issue, it only sold 495,423. Clearly it wasn’t a success, but it did out-sell the November issue, which featured all the Kardashian-Jenner daughters along with their mother, Kris. That issue only sold 436,500 copies. The article goes on to provide additional data from magazines like GQ, Glamour, and Vanity Fair, which all experienced sales declines when they put members of the family on the cover; however, it’s important to note that there were a few exceptions: Rolling Stone, Women’s Health, and Teen Vogue surpassed their averages when they had Kardashian-Jenner cover stars—reminding everyone the family still has a large and loyal following. Hmm, so more like win some, lose some. Do YOU buy magazines with Kardashians and Jenners on the cover?? Cosmopolitan / Instagram

Hello Muva! Amber Rose Gets Clean… And Dirty Portraying Feminist Role Models For Paper Magazine

Remember when we told you Amber Rose would have the honor of breaking the internet for Paper Magazine this year? Well the moment has arrived, although we’re gonna leave it up to y’all to decide whether or not the internet has been broken or nah. Paper Mag just released the images along with a pretty great story on why Amber went all feminist on us this year. Here’s a shot of Amber as Rosie the Riveter: In the accompanying article she explains that she made the decision to cease being a “slut shamer, promote sex positivity and identify as a feminist following her split from Wiz: “I would look on [Wiz’s] Instagram and he would have pictures of all these women all over him… and then I would post a picture of me and my son. And people would be like, ‘Does your son know that his mother’s a whore?’” she says. “People are like, ‘Wiz is out f***ing mad bad b***hes and you’re at home crying over him because he’s the best thing that f***ing ever happened to you and now you’re just a fat, bald-headed single mother and no one will ever love you.’ So yeah, I guess months of seeing s**t like that, I was just like, ‘I can’t live like this. There’s something wrong.’” Yeah we could see how a double standard like that might make you change your views a bit…. Here’s Amber as Gloria Steinem and Dorothy Pitman Hughes Amber also tells PAPER that the first time she was called a “slut” was in the eighth grade at a party where she was playing Seven Minutes in Heaven with a group of classmates, and one of them took her in the closet and told her to get down on her knees. “That young, I didn’t know what [that] meant,” Rose pauses a second. “It just didn’t register. But he’s like, ‘No, no, I’m telling you, get down on your knees. I’ll show you something.’…And then he just opens the door, right?…And I look over at him and he has his p***s in my face, I’m on my knees — and still, girl, I swear to God, I swear on my son’s life, it still didn’t register to me why they were all gasping.” Rose says she was still a virgin and “had never even thought of giving head at that time,” she says of her introduction to slut-shaming and the lack of control women have over their own sexuality in our society. “I was so young. I fell into a depression. Everyone hated me. I was the school slut.” Poor Amber… You can read the rest about what Amber had to say about how she wishes women would stick together and taking the racism out of feminism HERE . Sick Burn: Grace Jones Thinks Kim Kardashian Is A “Basic” Azz Beyotch

Grace Jones Calls Kim Kardashian “Basic” And Slams PAPER Magazine #BreakTheInternet Cover There are plenty of people who aren’t very fond of the shenanigans of one Kimberly Noel Kardashian West . One of those people is music and fashion icon Grace Jones. The eccentric chanteuse didn’t bite her tongue, nor mince a single syllable in her ‘Private Life’ autobiography when talking about Kim and the infamous #BreakTheInternet PAPER Magazine cover: When he took a photograph of Kim Kardashian with a champagne glass perched on her ass in an impossible pose like the ones he did with me over thirty-five years ago, I asked him why he was giving her – a basic commercial product – his ideas? This seemed to contradict his spirit of integrity, which he has protected for so long. Why was he repeating himself, just to give her a little flare of publicity, quickly absorbed by the next puff of self-promotion?” Well, he replied, ‘I got the feeling that if I didn’t do that photograph, she would have simply copied the idea anyway. I might as well copy myself.’ His ideas are are so powerful that repeating them decades later still causes a hell of a fuss, however temporary…He might have done it to wind me up a little as well. Which he did. Grace sound hella butt hurt. What do you think of her comments? Did her baby daddy disrespect her legacy by allowing Kim to re-create her iconic photo? Images via Jean-Paul Goode/PAPER
