Gary Coleman on Life Support, Unconscious After Suffering Brain Hemorrhage

The manager of Gary Coleman is asking for our “thoughts and prayers” as the former child star, now 42, is on life support after suffering a brain hemorrhage. He suffered the injury in his Utah home on Wednesday. Coleman was hospitalized for treatment, his manager John Alcantar said, and was in critical condition. Things took a turn for the worse , though, when Coleman was transferred to the ICU at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center for further tests and treatment: “As of May 27, Mr. Coleman was conscious and lucid. By early afternoon, Mr. Coleman was slipping in and out of consciousness and his condition worsened. “We are very saddened to announce that since mid-afternoon, Mountain Time, on May 27, 2010, Mr. Coleman has been unconscious and on life support.” Alcantar says that despite Coleman’s recent history of health problems and personal issues, “he always has had fond memories of being an entertainer.” “He appreciates his fans for all their support. At this critical moment, we can only ask for thoughts and prayers for Gary to make a speedy, full recovery.” If it’s any consolation, Bret Michaels also suffered a brain hemorrhage and bounced back from similarly long odds. Here’s hoping Coleman can do the same.

50 Cent Isn’t So Skinny Anymore

Photos emerge of the G-Unit chief clearly recovering from weight loss. By MTV News Staff 50 Cent Photo: G-Unit 50 Cent has been muscular for years, so fans were stunned when photos of the G-Unit chief looking shockingly skinny hit the Internet on Wednesday. The text accompanying the photos, which appear in the new Us Magazine and on ThisIs50.com , say that the rapper slimmed down to 160 pounds (from 214) pounds for “Things Fall Apart,” a movie he penned himself and stars in, about a cancer-stricken football player. He said he achieved the dramatic weight lost via a liquid diet and a daily regimen that included three-hour treadmill sessions. The articles noted that 50 has been putting his weight back on in anticipation of his tour kicking off Friday , and on Thursday (May 27), a photo showing that appeared in South Carolina’s Aiken Standard. 50 visited the area to research his background for “50’s Roots,” an installment of VH1’a “Rock Docs.” He appears the picture of good health in the photo, taken Wednesday, with a smile to boot. The MC is apparently taking his bulking up seriously, ordering a “cheeseburger all the way” and French fries in a restaurant where he stopped for lunch, according to the paper. “He was a real gentleman,” the manager said. G-Unit’s Tony Yayo told MTV News earlier this month that he admires his boss’s resolve when it comes to his acting craft. “50 doesn’t party, he doesn’t drink. For his new film, the guy was, like, 130 pounds,” Yayo said. “He was running from the airport to the hotel. And I was like, ‘Man, he has the three D’s: desire, determination and [direction].’ ” Were you shocked by 50 Cent’s weight loss? Let us know in the comments! Britney Spears Ousts Ashton Kutcher as Twitter King

Last year, Ashton Kutcher beat CNN to a million followers on Twitter, proclaiming himself the King of All Social Media. Okay, the first part is true anyway? Since then, he’s enjoyed his perch as the undisputed leader in total fans on the micro-blogging site … until today, when Britney Spears surpassed him . Yup, Brit has opened up a 4,950,699-4,944,227 lead. Ashton’s response? He does not care. Fittingly, he Twittered his response to playing second fiddle: He wrote: “2nd most pop Q ‘What do U think about Brittney having more followers than u?’ Answer ‘I don’t care. Aren’t u suppose 2B a movie reporter?'” Ashton Twittered this during a press junket for his and Katherine Heigl’s new movie Killers . Seems like he’s taking it in stride … or is secretly bitter. As for Britney, she celebrated her reign by actually Twittering: “WOW!!!!! #1 on Twitter! Thank you! Tweet me some questions this morning! xoxo -Brit” This is surprising and yet not. Surprising because Britney’s Twitter is boring and rarely written by her. It’s usually her manager writing some BS story . It’s not surprising in the sense that Britney Spears is a bigger star than Ashton Kutcher, and one of the most famous people alive … for better or worse. Either way, if we were Britney, we wouldn’t get too comfortable. There are other threats to the crown who aren’t even on Twitter yet. One word: Bieber . P.S. Please follow THG on Twitter ! We have slightly fewer followers than Britney Spears … but you can bring our celebrity gossip site one person closer.

Ludacris Says He’ll Keep Making ‘History’ With Ciara

‘We always pick the right songs to do together,’ the Atlanta MC says of ‘Ride’ and other collabos. By Jayson Rodriguez, with additional reporting by Matt Elias Ludacris Photo: MTV News The formula is simple enough: Ludacris plus Ciara on the same track equals a hit. “Man, we always pick the right songs to do together,” Luda told MTV News over the weekend in Los Angeles, where he performed at KIIS-FM’s annual Wango Tango festival. “She always gives me the right songs; I always give her the right songs. We were actually just talking about that today. So I’m just glad that we have that many collaborations under our belts … we’ll continue to make history.” The two Atlanta residents recently reconnected on Ciara’s latest single, the steamy “Ride,” which is the first offering from her forthcoming album, tentatively titled Basic Instinct. The project is being helmed by The-Dream and Christopher “Tricky” Stewart, who oversaw her last effort, 2009’s Fantasy Ride. Last year, Ciara explained to MTV News how she sought out Stewart, whom she’d known for a long time prior to their collaborating. “I learned a lot from him, but one thing I never did was work with him,” she said. “So now, on this record, before I started the process, I said, ‘I always wanted to work with him but never got around to him.’ And it was gonna happen this time. Right away, I set up a meeting. I sat down with Tricky and his manager, and we all talked about working, and I was so excited about it. It’s been something I had been really, really wanting to do.” At press time, Ciara’s Basic Instinct had yet to be assigned a release date. But in another interview with us, the singer promised her next effort would be “hot,” which “Ride” and its Diane Martel-directed video certainly are. “Well, I have to tell you the new record is going to be pretty hot,” she laughed. “No, it’s gonna be fun. I’m going to have a good time. I don’t want to say too much about it, but I’m very proud of what’s happening right now. I’m working hard. I want to make sure I give my fans what they want, and I want to give them more. So I’m just taking my time and just trying to create something that just really feels good to the masses.” What’s your favorite Ciara and Ludacris collabo? Tell us in the comments! Britney Spears BS Claim is BS Itself

Britney Spears has a feature on her official site that calls out many of the fake stories printed about her by celebrity gossip publications. It’s actually pretty funny. Is she the one who’s spreading bull$h!t stories this time, though? E! News confirmed twice that Britney Spears was at a b-day party Saturday for hotel owner pal Phil Maloof, despite the story being tagged “bulls#!t” on her site. Maloof’s rep also confirmed it, saying: “Phil thanks Britney Spears and all his friends and supporters of Black Star Beer for celebrating with him on Saturday night.” This after her manager, Adam Leber, posted: “Brit went to Disneyland this weekend – not to a party in Hollywood! See who’s reporting BS,” on her Twitter . Who’s sources are full of BS now, BS? Since the original story, sources have confirmed that the superstar was ushered in by security from an entrance on Argyle Street and set up shop in the VIP area. Why the lies, Team Britney? Because E! reported that Spears showed up at Maloof’s shindig with an unidentified gentleman who was not boyfriend Jason Trawick ? As for the Disneyland story? She was there, alright … on Mother’s Day, a week earlier. Not that anything bad happened at the party. Papa Jamie was there too. In any case, come on Britney. Enough with the BS BS.

‘Machete’ Star Don Johnson On Comedy, Working With Robert De Niro, More

‘It’s kind of a fun time for me because I don’t have to be a slave to the former Don Johnson image or any of that,’ the actor says. By Kara Warner Don Johsnon Photo: Getty Images Any day is a good day to chat with Don Johnson — especially when it involves discussing his role in Robert Rodriguez’s upcoming star-studded blood-fest “Machete.” MTV recently caught up with Johnson to discuss his upcoming projects, watching “Miami Vice” and “Nash Bridges” in syndication and a possible “new era” of Don Johnson acting. MTV : So first off, let’s start with the trailer that everyone was talking about this weekend. It’s a great trailer and the greatest moment in the trailer is clearly the “Introducing Don Johnson” moment. Don Johnson : [ Laughs. ] Yeah, that was a fun one. [I was] sort of a late addition to the cast and by the time I got there, all the specialized credits like “with” and “and” and “featuring” and all that other stuff were taken. I think [Robert] De Niro got “and” and Lindsay [Lohan] got “with” or who knows. So we were kicking it around and my manager Jason Weinberg said, “How about ‘introducing’?” and we laughed. So they ran it by Robert and Robert cracked up. He said, “Absolutely, let’s go with that.” MTV : It’s an awesome moment. What did you think when you saw the trailer? Johnson : Well, you know, to me it looks just like great fun, in the vein of the old exploitation pictures like Harvey Korman and all of those guys. Robert and I were texting each other a couple of days ago when it came out and I was telling him how fun the trailer looked and I said, “And timely” and he said, “Yeah, like exploitation of your ripped-from-the-headlines stuff.” MTV : Absolutely. Johnson : It’s fun and working with De Niro was, we’ve been friends for 25 or 30 years and it was a thrill to get to work with him. MTV : And it looks like he’s having some fun with the part too, as is with most of the cast. This is the kind of film where you can just sort of let it hang out. Johnson : That’s exactly right — we’re all eating the scenery right and left. MTV : So most of your scenes are with De Niro? Johnson : All of my scenes were with De Niro, I think, except for one — and then I think I’m on the phone with him. [ Laughs. ] MTV : Did you know [director Robert] Rodriguez before this? Johnson : Oh yeah, I knew him from Cheech, so he was in San Francisco one time and I cast up to visit Cheech and I said, “Well, while you’re here I’m going to put you to work.” So I put him in “Nash Bridges” as the commercial filmmaker. And he literally shot some footage of a salsa party in my apartment, in Nash’s apartment with Cheech. He shot it on digital-8 and we used his footage in the show and we just had a great time. He’s a wonderful, wonderful filmmaker and a great friend. MTV : What can you say about the character you’re playing in “Machete”? Johnson : Well, he’s a gun-toting vigilante; it was just a great hoot for me to get to play someone who is so diametrically opposed to my being. And, you know, all of the characters are drawn very broadly and, you know, it’s fun. Like you said, Robert’s kind of, “Let’s roar with it.” MTV : So we were talking about the introduction in the credits — does it feel like a reintroduction for you? Do you feel like this is marking another stage of your career? Johnson : I think that we all end up reinventing ourselves all the time. And with me, I’ve got a comedy coming up this summer with Adam Sandler’s company called “Born to Be a Star” which I play a porn director named Miles Deep. And I’ve just finished a pilot for ABC that is a half-hour sitcom. So, at any rate, in answer to your question, I don’t know. The focus on comedy is a little different. And it’s kind of a fun time for me because I don’t have to be a slave to the former Don Johnson image or any of that. I can kind of wing it and do what I was trained to do. MTV : How was working with Sandler and company? Johnson : Oh my God, those guys are the greatest. … When we were making the picture I would text Sandler and [Jason] Schwartzman back and forth and I would sign off as “Your deepness.” What a blast. It was so much fun and I got to create this character who was a complete wild man and it should be fun. MTV : It sounds like with “Machete” and “Born to Be a Star” you have to have a sense of humor about yourself. Do you feel you’ve always had a sense of humor about yourself? Johnson : No, I think it was quite the opposite. I think I’ve developed a sense of humor after I got rid of that fame disease. And the joy of doing the work and working these days is so much greater. I’m having a lot of fun with it. MTV : “Miami Vice” seems to be on the air more and more and “Nash Bridges” is probably also in syndication. What runs through your mind on either of the shows at this point? Johnson : You know they’re on, they’re both on simultaneously in syndication in 130 countries around the world and it’s a real sense of accomplishment. I love it, but by the same token, I don’t watch them. MTV : What did you make of Michael Mann’s big-screen “Miami Vice” interpretation? Was that an odd feeling to sort of see his new take on it? Johnson : I didn’t see it all the way through; I saw bits and pieces and what I saw you accurately put it, it was Michael’s interpretation of it. And Michael, you know, look this a longer conversation than a sound bite on that. I think that Michael is an enormously talented director and he went out to make a new version of an iconic television show. I think that’s a challenge in any way you look at it, because you’re never going to please everybody and those images are so heavily engraved in everybody’s consciousness. I didn’t run into a lot of people that were … it was apples and oranges you know — it was kind of sort of the same thing but not. Check out everything we’ve got on “Machete.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock &#8212 visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Katy Perry’s ‘California Gurls’ Is A Nod To … Big Star?

Her manager suggested the spelling variation as a reference to Big Star’s ‘September Gurls.’ By James Montgomery Katy Perry?s “California Gurls” Photo: Chelsea Lauren/ FilmMagic You might not realize it, what with the redonkulously catchy chorus, the Snoop cameo or the lyrical mentions of Daisy Dukes-wearing beach babes who will melt your popsicle, but Katy Perry’s brand-new “California Gurls,” the summer-ready first single from her upcoming Teenage Dream album , is actually a tribute to power-pop pioneers Big Star. Well, sort of. See, as Perry recently told Entertainment Weekly, she named the tune after Big Star’s 1974 song “September Gurls,” from their seminal Radio City album. And she did so — well, because her manager is a longtime Star fanatic. “My manager, Bradford, he’s from Mississippi, and he’s a huge Big Star fan,” Perry told EW. “And with the death of one of their members, I had just written that song, and he’s like, ‘Katy, just for me, will you please title it ‘California Gurls,’ with a ‘u’? People won’t even know!’ I don’t know the whole catalog of Big Star, but I did it because Bradford is one of my best friends, and I thought it was cool, and you know, the kids like those variations.” In March, Big Star frontman Alex Chilton died of a heart attack and was remembered days later by his friends, contemporaries and surviving band members at a South by Southwest tribute concert in Austin, Texas. A spokesperson for Perry’s label, Capitol, confirmed the Big Star story to MTV News. Her Teenage Dream album hits stores August 24. No word if it will include a song named after “The Ballad of El Goodo.” What do you think of Katy’s new single? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Katy Perry
