Lee Dewyze’s Friends Pack Hometown Bar For ‘Idol’ Performance Night

Friends, family and fans sport their ‘Lee-shirts’ as they cheer on the former paint salesman. By Gil Kaufman Photo: Gil Kaufman/ MTV News ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Illinois — More than two hours before “American Idol” aired on Tuesday , the party room at the Fox and Hound Smokehouse restaurant was already filling up, as superfans angled to get a table close to one of the five big-screen TVs that would soon be beaming in images of hometown hero, Lee Dewyze. One long table was crowded with joyful moms hawking Dewyze T-shirts and red foam fingers that read “Dewyze Choice – Believe,” which, like the shirts, had a smiling picture of Lee in place of the “L.” “When you see [Lee] live, whether it’s at a karaoke bar or in the corner of a bar downtown, he’s just got this thing about him, he just lights up the whole room,” said Brian Friedopfer, 27, about the unique allure of his friend Dewyze, who would start fighting for a spot in the top three just moments later. “We’ve literally gone to places where we don’t know anybody, and the second he touches a microphone, everybody is just silent and watching him.” Though Dewyze is the dude in the bunch who has made it big, Friedopfer had his own moment in the sun when he went out to visit his pal during Elvis week: Host Ryan Seacrest picked Friedopfer out of the crowd and slow-danced with him in the middle of Tim Urban’s performance. “Whether he wins or not, I don’t think it matters. I think the kid’s got it made for the rest of his life,” said Brian, who is confident his pal is going to win it all. “If he got voted off tomorrow, God forbid, I think he’d get signed the next day.” As showtime approached, “Idol” recordings of Lee singing “The Boxer” and “Treat Her Like a Lady” blasted over the sound system, and families rushed to wolf down their nachos and buffalo wings. Nearly 200 friends, fans and family packed the room, taking turns at the complimentary pasta buffet and shouting their support any time Lee was mentioned or shown on the screens. So many supporters showed up to the strip-mall sports bar that has become ground zero for performance night gatherings that the manager — who once hired Lee to play the main room — had to open a second room in the back for the spill-over crowd. That back room is where a handful of Dewyze’s best friends, including Friedopfer, were huddled, readying their phones for frantic dialing that would start right after the show and continue into the night as they moved on to Potato Creek Johnnys, a neighborhood karaoke bar wherethey often wore out the Kings of Leon and Lynyrd Skynyrd selections with Dewyze. Both rooms were vocal when the judges had less than kind words about Dewyze’s performance, raining down lusty boos when Randy Jackson said his “Kiss From a Rose” was unoriginal and even louder hisses when Simon Cowell compared it to karaoke. “I don’t agree with any of those judges,” said Mike Corsi, another one of Lee’s longtime friends, who met the singer in detention nine years ago, when the pair were in high school. “He is by far the best out there. It’s gonna come down to him and Crystal, but I honestly do believe that he’s gonna win it.” In fact, Corsi said he told Dewyze back in January that he had a feeling his detention mate would go all the way. Earlier in the day, at Mt. Prospect Paint, where Dewyze worked for six years before his run on “Idol” — right up until he left for Hollywood — manager Bill Lagattolla was doing a brisk business in Lee-shirts. Just hours before Tuesday night’s performance show there was a nonstop parade of locals coming in to buy their Lee spiritwear. They hoped to wear it all during Friday’s top-three homecoming parade and rally at a local horse track that one of Lee’s good friends and former teacher, Amy Silverman, was frantically planning. Chanelle Dahn, 20, stopped in to pick up one of the neon-green “Vote 4 Lee” shirts that were piled by the hundreds in the front of the store. “I went to school with Lee, and he used to come to our house and play guitar with my brother,” she said. “It’s so funny to see someone you went to school with on TV!” Proceeds from the sales of the shirts and hats, which Lagattolla said have been in the hundreds, if not thousands, will go to fund the music department at Dewyze’s former school, Mt. Prospect High. Even as Lagattolla tried to help customers looking for the right shade of paint for a basement renovation, the phone continued to ring off the hook with calls about Dewyze, which Bill said sometimes number 300-400 a day. “I love it. I’m so proud of him and so happy to see everybody coming out here and supporting him,” said Sarah Dewyze-Salas, 26, Lee’s older sister, who attended Tuesday night’s party with their cousin, Kelly Badgley, 27. Wearing their Lee-shirts, they beamed as the huge crowd began filing out after the show. “I thought he did awesome. I think he did great, and I think he’ll keep on going,” Dewyze-Salas said, adding that her brother’s duet with rival Crystal Bowersox on the “Once” ballad “Falling Slowly” was her favorite performance of the season. “He always said that music was his life and that this was his dream, so I knew something would come of that,” said Dewyze-Salas of her pride in how far her brother has come on “Idol.” How did you think Lee Dewyze did on Tuesday night? Gucci Mane Makes Big Plans After Release From Jail

Rapper outlines plans for 1017 Brick Squad Records, summer tour and more. By Shaheem Reid Gucci Mane at his press conference in Atlanta on Tuesday Photo: MTV News Gucci Mane is a man with a plan. Several plans. The ATL street king was released from jail Wednesday morning (May 12) after serving less than a year for probation violation . As soon as he got out, Gucc talked to the media, laying out his plans — which include two albums in the next few months and touring — and expressing remorse for the violation that had put him back behind bars. “First and foremost, I would like to thank my legal counsel, Dwight Thomas and Michael Holmes, for their excellent representation, as well as my label, Asylum and Warner Brothers Records, for sticking with me through my situation and helping me through my time behind bars,” Gucci said. “Most importantly, I want to thank all of my fans for their support while I have been away. Your letters and your words of encouragement helped me make it through. None of my success would be possible without you. I have made some mistakes in my life that have hurt a lot of people who care about me. I have worked very hard to get past them, but those mistakes have brought me to where I am today, and they will not be repeated.” Gucci also said he has been improving himself during his months in jail. “These past six months have been a difficult time, but fortunately I have learned a great deal from my experience,” he added. “I was able to do a great deal of soul searching; I am coming out with a new attitude towards life. Unfortunately, my incarceration also came at a pivotal point in my career, just as my first major-label album was dropping. I was forced to miss what should have been one of the proudest moments of my life. This is something that I will make sure never happens again. My time in jail was trying, but I grew from it and am now a stronger and better person. I want to continue on a positive track and truly focus on being a role model to my fans and my community. I am looking towards the future with a newfound respect and appreciation for the law and a strong dedication to my music and my career.” From there, the MC nicknamed LaFlare, who recently fired his manager Deb Antney, outlined his new business structure and artistic future endeavors. “I have already begun to make positive strides towards the future,” he said. “I have launched a new label, 1017 Brick Squad Records in affiliation with Asylum/ Warner Bros Records, and I am working with a new team. I am looking forward to getting back to business and to start making hits. I am extremely excited about my new album, The Appeal, which will be dropping at the end of the summer. Over the course of 2010, 1017 Brick Squad Records will also be releasing albums from my artist Wacka Flocka Flame, as well as my group Brick Squad, which features Wacka, OJ Da Juiceman and myself. In July, I will be heading out on a nationwide tour, hitting venues across the country and continuing the movement.” Gucci is already booked to perform at the Hot 97 Summer Jam in New Jersey on June 6 as well as Hot 107.9’s Birthday Bash concert in Atlanta on June 19. His first show back, however, is advertised for May 28 in Miami as part of the Memorial Day weekend festivities. In addition to his aforementioned albums, Gucci is also set to get back to his mixtapes . He and DJ Holiday will begin working on the sequel to Writing’s on the Wall immediately. Did Britney Spears Record "Telephone" Before Lady Gaga?

Britney Spears recorded “Telephone” before Lady Gaga … according to sketchy reports and a “leaked” demo purported to be Spears’ original recording of it. According to Gawker, Lady Gaga wrote the tune for Britney, who passed on it for her Circus album. Ol’ Peg Leg took it back for herself, and it became a hit. Perez Hilton is convinced that it’s Britney doing Gaga’s ” Telephone .” Spears’ longest-running fan site, World of Britney, denies the vocals are by its namesake. “There was almost no Auto Tune in the actual song,” the site said. “It was raw vocals and that isn’t the song. Those of you with ears can hear its [sic] not B.” Um, okay … because Britney Spears is all about raw vocal ability and never uses Auto Tune or any sort of overdubs or enhancements whatsoever … no way. Take a listen to this “Telephone” and comment below: Britney Spears: Telephone Is the story true? Is the recording even her? Is it any good? Is it an attempt to siphon Gaga’s fame (like her manager’s campaign for a Britney Glee episode )? You tell us. What do you think of “Britney’s” version?

Will New Def Jam Exec Sha Money XL Bring The G-Unit To The Label?

‘I would like to provide an opportunity for them to continue to grow,’ he tells Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid, with reporting by Sway Calloway Sha Money XL Photo: MTV News Executive Decisions: Sha Money XL Queens is in the building — again. Sha Money XL has signed on to become the senior VP of A&R at Def Jam Records. The label has had such a rich history of Queens-bred fellas in the boardroom, from its founder Russell Simmons to Irv Gotti to one of Sha’s mentors, the late Jam Master Jay. XL is excited to plant his flag in the cherished hip-hop recording house. “I’ve been floating around this industry since I’ve just been executive-producing 50 [Cent]’s albums,” XL explained Thursday at the MTV offices. “Freelancing, doing my own thing. I’ve been able to meet with L.A. Reid. We’ve been having some great conversations. Finally, the call came. It felt so good. Def Jam is such a strong company and strong roster. The staff is amazing. I felt it instantly. I knew that this is something I can do with my New York vision and New York swag and bring that for all the guys that’s based out here. And the things that was needed to excite the industry as well, internally and externally. I connect with everybody by all levels.” Sha said that after being with the G-Unit for so many years, there is no such thing as pressure to him anymore. “I work good under pressure,” he said. “Working with 50, I know what needs to get done. I don’t feel pressure. I do the things that need to be done. As long as artists listen and we really become businessmen in this business, as we say we are, I think we should all prosper. I’m looking to make the company more money and take it to the top, the highest level.” So with 50 Cent a free agent, free to bring himself and his label — which includes Lloyd Banks and Tony Yayo — anywhere he pleases, will Sha try to secure a spot for his longtime friends at Def Jam? “I spoke to Fif, to [his manager Chris] Lighty. I would love to see that there,” Sha admitted. “Banks has an amazing record right now, independently. If things work out, then yeah, I would love to see that happen.” If the Unit came to Def Jam, things would get interesting, to say the least. Shyne, Rick Ross, Nas and DJ Khaled, people who Fif and the Unit have had problems with through the years, are all on the roster. “I’m a businessman,” Sha Money said when asked how he would feel having the Unit in the same building with some of their adversaries. “The beef stuff, I’m over. We at a certain point in life where we don’t even need that. We eat that. So I will let them speak for their own, but honestly, I would like to see a company continue to grow. And I think G-Unit is in a position — coming from an independent space — that can continue to do their thing. I would like to provide an opportunity for them to continue to grow.” While the Unit deal is just in the talking stages now, Sha says his top priority is making sure Juelz Santana gets his LP out. XL already has his sights set on DJ Toomp to get in the lab with Juelz. This will not be the last time you hear from Mixtape Daily on Friday (April 30), we promise. On Friday evening, we will have a preview of the mixtape you are all anticipating, Jadakiss’ Gangsta Grillz Invasion: The Champ Is Here Part 3. Jennifer Lopez To Sign With Def Jam?

Jennifer Lopez is set to sign a new record deal but is already facing attacks for being “past her prime.” The sexy singer appeared to be facing a career crisis in February when it emerged she had split from her long-running record label Sony. But now she appears to be set to sign a new deal. “Def Jam label group will be the new home of Jennifer Lopez,” her manager, Benny Medina, insisted, although Def Jam has yet to confirm details of a deal. However, despite Def Jam’s interest, J-Lo is still far from out of the woods with her musical career. This week an audio clip of Lopez trying to record Barbra Streisand’s Enough Is Enough was leaked onto the internet – embarrassing the star as it reportedly reveals her off-key singing and repeatedly failing to get the song right. It only added fuel to the fire of those insisting that her days as a pop superstar are over. “People are saying that Jennifer is past her prime and her best work is behind her,” a source at a major record company told the New York Daily News . Another music insider added: “Jennifer is too old to play the cute little dance dolly, and she’s not skilled enough as an artist to sing serious ballads. So what can she do?”
