Well that’s a bit dramatic, wouldn’t you say? The Pope is laying the fire and brimstone on thick, when it comes to the “gay lifestyle,” particularly gay marriage. Pope Benedict XVI denounced gay marriage in his annual “State of the World” address Monday, going so far as to say the same-sex nuptials threaten the future of humanity. In the speech, the pope, 84, unleashed what some consider being his strongest tirade against gay marriage, saying it is among conventions that “undermine the family” and “threaten human dignity and the future of humanity itself,” Reuters reported. “Pride of place goes to the family, based on the marriage of a man and woman,” the pontiff said. “This is not a simple convention, but rather the fundamental cell of every society,” he continued. “Consequently, policies which undermine the family threaten human dignity and the future of humanity itself.” The pope also condemned laws that “not only permit but at times even promote abortion for reasons of convenience or for questionable medical motives.” The annual address was delivered to an audience of Vatican diplomats from nearly 180 countries. The Catholic Church, which teaches that homosexual acts are sins, and that marriage should be between a man and woman, is a notorious adversary of same-sex unions. Next month, the pope will elevate New York Archbishop Timothy Dolan to cardinal. Dolan, a leading opponent of gay marriage, once sent a letter to President Obama, blasting the administration for not supporting a federal ban on gay marriage. Dolan said Obama’s decision could “precipitate a national conflict between church and state of enormous proportions.” The pope touched on a wide range of topics in the new year address, including world violence and fiscal crisis. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver are getting along much better these days, but don’t bank on a reconciliation in their marriage – rings or no rings. While Internet reports that Shriver is wearing a suspicious ring on her finger fueled rumors of them getting back together, there’s a different explanation. The ring on Shriver’s left hand is actually her late mother’s. Shriver has been wearing the engagement ring since Eunice Kennedy Shriver’s death in 2009. As for rumors that Shriver is having second thoughts about divorcing Schwarzenegger, due to her religious beliefs, a source close to the couple denies it. “The reports of a reconciliation are not true,” says the source. The former couple, who announced their separation after 25 years, still spend quality time as a family with kids Katherine, Christina, Patrick and Christopher. They announced their separation last year after Shriver learned Arnold knocked up their longtime housekeeper Mildred Patricia Baena – over a decade ago. Most recently, Shriver and Schwarzenegger enjoyed Christmas with the kids in L.A., and attended the L.A. Lakers’ season opener game that afternoon. While it appears their divorce is still on, “Arnold and Maria will always come together when it comes to supporting and loving their children,” says an insider .

Over the holiday weekend, news broke that Russell Brand had filed for divorce after a year of marriage with the pop star. And while Perry has remained low-key since the split, she is amping up for what is sure to be another busy year. Perry hasn’t been spotted in public since Friday’s breakup announcement, but she did make some non-relationship-related headlines Tuesday (January 3) when a demo version of the Jessie James track “Bullet” hit the Net; Perry co-wrote the sassy track for the singer’s 2009 album. The singer has two shows later this month — one scheduled for January 19 in Jakarta, Indonesia, and another January 22 in the Philippines — as part of her California Dreams Tour. Come February, Perry is set to appear at the Grammys, where she is up for two awards, including Record of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance for “Firework.” It’s been nearly two years since Perry’s megahit Teenage Dream album dropped. While no word has come down about new music from the star, when MTV News spoke to producer Tricky Stewart , he hinted that Perry was working on a new release of some older material, including a track called “Dressing Up.” “Katy and I went into [the studio] just to address some issues with records that we had done in the past that didn’t end up going on Teenage Dream, ” he told MTV News about the top-secret project. “So we are in the process of just listening and freshening up things and getting ready for something special she has going on.” Perry hasn’t announced plans to tackle any more acting roles, but in 2011, she made fans laugh on the big screen as the voice of Smurfette in “The Smurfs” and as the host of “Saturday Night Live” in December, teasing a possible second career in film and TV. Since the split made headlines, Perry has not addressed the divorce . However, Brand said in a statement, “Sadly, Katy and I are ending our marriage.
