‘Ant-Man’ Movie Wouldn’t Just Be For ‘Avengers’ Experts, Director Says

Edgar Wright says he’s just completed a third draft of the script for the Marvel movie. By Aubrey Sitterson, with reporting by Josh Horowitz “Ant-Man” director Edgar Wright Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images With “Captain America: The First Avenger” grossing over $65 million on its opening weekend and fans already buzzing about next year’s “Avengers,” Marvel’s quickly expanding cinematic universe is as popular as ever. Now, from San Diego Comic-Con 2011 comes news that Marvel Studios might finally be moving ahead on a long-awaited release: Edgar Wright’s “Ant-Man.” The “Shaun of the Dead” and “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” director has been talking about taking on Marvel’s smallest superhero since at least 2007, promising a live-action film that would blend humor with action and would include two different Ant-Men: Henry Pym and Scott Lang. In the Marvel Comics source material, both characters make use of a special formula and suit that allows them to shrink, as well as a high-tech helmet that facilitates communication with ants and other insects. “Ant-Man” is said to feature flashbacks of the original hero, Pym, as well as scenes of his successor, Lang, in the present day. Now, after years of infrequent updates and stalled production, things are finally looking up for “Ant-Man.” “Since February, we’ve done two drafts of the script, and we just handed in a third draft on Monday,” Wright told MTV News. The director is co-writing the film with Joe Cornish, whose “Attack the Block” (a British alien-invasion movie starring frequent Wright collaborator Nick Frost and in theaters on July 29) was making waves of its own at Comic-Con. Apparently, some of the hold-up on “Ant-Man” was related to “Attack the Block,” as the duo did not complete a second draft until Cornish was finished with his directorial debut. “The way we wrote the script is for it to be a standalone genre film,” Wright said, perhaps indicating that “Ant-Man” would be less explicitly tied to the “Avengers” family of titles like “Captain America: The First Avenger,” “Thor” and “Iron Man.” Wright continued by explaining his desire to “create an ‘in’ for people so you don’t have to know 50 years of ‘Avengers’ history to enjoy the movie.” While most recent superhero adaptations have focused on Marvel and DC’s “big guns,” characters like Batman, Spider-Man, Superman and others, the protagonist of “Ant-Man” will be entirely new to all but the most fervent comic book fans. For Wright and Cornish, however, the freedom that comes with a lesser-known character is a large part of the upcoming project’s appeal. Wright was close-lipped on who he wanted to play the part of the movie’s eponymous hero (or heroes), but he did hint that he had someone in mind. Who would you like to see play Ant-Man? VIDEO: Justin Timberlake and Jimmy Fallon Perform the ‘History of Rap Part 2’

If you couldn’t tell from the trailer for Friends with Benefits — which features star Justin Timberlake singing not one, but two cheesy one-hit wonder classics (“Jump” by Kris Kross and “Closing Time” by Semisonic), the former N’S ync’er loves toying with his musical past. Couple that with the fact that the last time Timberlake appeared with Jimmy Fallon on Late Night , the pair performed “The History of Rap,” and it shouldn’t be a surprise that a sequel was in the offing. No “Jump,” unfortunately, but there was Biz Markie. Click through to watch the video everyone will send you before lunch.

More than 20 years after noted show-tune geniuses Bono and The Edge botched their own adaptation of A Clockwork Orange , a new musical based on Anthony Burgess’s dystopian masterwork is headed to the stage in the UK. 8 Pro Tips for Writing a Comic Book Movie From Captain America’s Screenwriters

Screenwriting duo Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely began their partnership in college, moved to Los Angeles together (“We watched Baywatch and thought, ‘ Somebody wrote Baywatch — we could do that!'” quips McFeely), wrote a film for Bill Pullman, scripted The Life and Death of Peter Sellers , and caught the eye of Andrew Adamson, who then hired them to write all three Chronicles of Narnia films. Now they’ve penned Captain America: The First Avenger , the latest in Marvel Studios’ multi-film Avengers franchise and a rollicking WWII -set adventure that they hope to follow up with a sequel. It’s safe to say Markus and McFeely might have some wise words to share on the subject of their craft.

Michael Rapaport Eyes Roots, De La Soul For Next Docs

A Tribe Called Quest doc director says he’d do another hip-hop film ‘if things lined up.’ By Rob Markman, with reporting by Kara Warner Michael Rapaport Photo: MTV News The controversy surrounding the documentary “Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest” has not killed director Michael Rapaport’s hip-hop jones. The film has received rave reviews, and if given the chance, Rapaport told MTV News that he has his eye on a few other rap acts that he’d like to turn his lens on. “I would love to document De La Soul,” he said looking directly in the camera making his best pitch. Another group which Rapaport has interest in is Philadelphia hip-hop band the Roots. While the group has had a rotating cast since their 1993 debut, Organix, band leader and drummer ?uestlove, along with MC Black Thought and keyboardist Kamal have been mainstays. Multi-platinum producer Scott Storch was a one-time member, as was rapper Malik B. The Roots have released 10 studio LPs since the early 1990s, and of course, the Grammy-winning group are enjoying success as the in-house band for “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon.” “I would love to document the Roots; I think they have an interesting story,” Rapaport said. “I have a curiosity about them. Their musicality and their live performances I think would be great, and I have a feeling that there are stories behind each one of them.” After filming A Tribe Called Quest for his current work, Rapaport has went back and forth with group member Q-Tip. In light of the experience, when he visited “RapFix Live” in March, Q-Tip urged other rappers to tell their “own stories,” a concept that confused Rapaport . “I don’t know if he meant, ‘We’re from hip-hop, it should be a hip-hop director,’ ” the actor-director admitted to MTV News. “I don’t know who would go under the auspices of being a hip-hop director. Or if it was a racial thing like, ‘We’re black and shouldn’t have a white director.’ It was confusing to me.” As of now, Rapaport isn’t looking to do another rap film in the near future, but he wouldn’t turn it down if the opportunity presented itself. “Right now I’m taking a break from hip-hop documentaries,” he said. “But I would do it if things lined up.” Would you support a Michael Rapaport-directed Roots documentary? ‘Thor’ Sequel Set For July 2013

Star Chris Hemsworth will return, but director Kenneth Branagh will not. By Kara Warner Chris Hemsworth in “Thor” Photo: Paramount Pictures Given its mighty haul at the box office earlier this summer, Disney and Marvel Studios have officially green-lit a “Thor” sequel to be released July 26, 2013. Deadline originally reported that Chris Hemsworth will return to play the titular God of Thunder, but director Kenneth Branagh will not be back, which Disney confirmed to MTV News. When we spoke with Branagh prior to the film’s release in May, the esteemed thespian seemed to be interested in continuing the story of the haughty Asgardian but was cautious about stating outright that he would be 100 percent in to direct a second “Thor” film. “The prospect of [a sequel] is very tantalizing and fascinating,” Branagh diplomatically told MTV News. “I loved working with this group of actors and had a fantastic experience working with everyone in the Marvel family.” At the time, Branagh mentioned the fact that getting a sequel off the ground would require major box-office success and support from the fans — which, with a $437 million worldwide gross, the fans and money talked. Branagh also added that whether or not he was directing future installments, he was still a fan of the world of the Marvel Thunder God. “When I first got involved with this, I was so thrilled. The first big, really exciting moment when I started really going through the comic books was all the descriptions of powers,” he explained. “I loved it, amazing. People’s body weights, how tall they were, what they could do, all of that kind of stuff. There’s a vast amount of that from the Thor universe that I’d like to see.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Thor.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com . VIDEO: Watch Thor Get Cosmic And Then Blow The Crap Out Of A Fake New Mexico Town

As far as Marvel Studios’ summer superhero movies go, it seems like there might be a clear set of preconceived notions already coagulating into stone. Captain America ? Looks like it might be a retro-adventure movie like Indiana Jones ! X-Men: First Class ? The trailer looked cool, but the posters are objectively vomit-inducing, so we’re cautiously optimistic. Thor , on the other hand, seems to have already been declared DOA by the geek brigade. But this behind the scenes look on the set in New Mexico might start to change their minds.
