Ali Fedotowsky: Engaged (According to Tabloid)!

The Bachelorette star Ali Fedotowsky may have hinted that she ends up alone after this season, but could she just be playing it coy? That’s Us Weekly ‘s theory. The celebrity gossip publication “confirms” (term used very loosely) there’s a proposal on the season finale – and the gorgeous Massachusetts native accepts! For all we know, it’s a proposal by Chris Harrison to join him for a glass of water during a five-minute break from filming – but congratulations in any case! “She’s already thinking about the details,” a source says – and she’s SO excited! “She did the show because she was ready to settle down and get married.” Us claims the former Facebook ad rep is planning a West Coast wedding in early 2011. Who’s the lucky guy? The anonymous sources aren’t saying, natch. Is Ali Fedotowsky really engaged – and to whom? Unlike that stiff Jake Pavelka, who gushed about being engaged throughout the season, Ali’s remarks have been of the “I’m happy with my decision” variety. Some believe that’s code for “I’m still single.” Reports that Ali Fedotowsky is already dating some other guy ( Patrick Hammon ) also cast doubt on any Bachelorette engagement stories, don’t you think? We’re obviously not in the know as far as the specifics, but our gut reaction is to call BS on this story. There are only vague details and no sourced quotes. For more on who Ali chooses, check out The Bachelorette spoilers … but don’t say we didn’t warn you, these are serious giveaways, read at your own risk.

WaPo Slams Rasmussen’s Professionalism, But Doesn’t Tell Readers His Critics Are Liberals

The Washington Post ran a story slamming pollster Scott Rasmussen on Thursday on the front page of the Style section. Political reporter Jason Horowitz earnestly channeled the Democratic spin from the story’s beginning: ASBURY PARK, N.J. — Here is a fun fact for those in the political polling orthodoxy who liken Scott Rasmussen to a conjurer of Republican-friendly numbers: He works above a paranormal bookstore crowded with Ouija boards and psychics on the Jersey Shore. Here’s the fact they find less amusing: From his unlikely outpost, Rasmussen has become a driving force in American politics. Democrats surely dislike how Rasmussen’s polls (like this week’s showing Harry Reid losing by 11 points) affect the optimism of their donors and activists. But are his numbers accurate? The Post wanted its readers to know this guy Rasmussen was a scary conservative: he played guitar in a band in high school in Massachusetts called “Rebel’s Confederacy” (racist?!) and he quotes the Bible: He graduated from DePauw University and moved to Charlotte. There he married, started a family and became a devout Methodist. He is given to quoting Scripture, including the principle: “Let every man be quick to listen, but slow to speak, and slow to anger.” (James 1:19.) In the mid-1990s, Rasmussen had discovered the business model of automated polling, and folks he polled heard a recording of his wife reading poll questions. In 1998, heavy traffic crashed his site when Rush Limbaugh unexpectedly told listeners to visit. Two years later, in August 2000, Bill O’Reilly invited him onto his show. He wrote columns for the conservative site WorldNetDaily in 2000. In 2001, he wrote a book advocating the privatization of Social Security. But are his numbers accurate? The pull quote in the story as it continued on page C-9 attacked his professionalism for his newer methods: “The firm manages to violate nearly everything I was taught what a good survey should do.” — Mark Blumenthal, a founder of Pollster.com, speaking about Rasmussen Reports Then there’s this hilarious attack from Daily Kos veteran Nate Silver, soon, a new hire of the New York Times: He “faults Rasmussen for polling only likely voters, which reduces the pool to ‘political junkies.'” Adds Scott Keeter of the Pew Research Center in agreement: “It paints a picture of an electorate that is potentially madder than it really is…And potentially more conservative than it really is.” Would it be wiser for a political candidate to focus on wooing unlikely voters? Jason Horowitz is dishonest for suggesting it’s Rasmussen versus the professionals — and not disclosing that Mark Blumenthal is identified correctly in others stories as a “Democratic pollster,” and not disclosing Nate Silver came from the hard-left Daily Kos, and not even hinting that the Pew Research Center is deeply invested in a series of liberal causes, and whose newest poll (also out Thursday) coos that “The president gets an enthusiastic thumbs up from the world (with the notable exception of the U.S.) for how he has handled the economic crisis.” They can even admit Rasmussen’s critics are liberals in the headline on C-9: “For some, pollster Rasmussen is a minus man.” For some? GOP pollster Ed Goeas, identified as a “Republican pollster,” defends Rasmussen but suggests he take on a Democrat to “balance his analysis” (or to please The Washington Post?) Rasmussen has a “conservative constituency” of Fox, The Washington Times, and the Drudge Report, adds pollster John Zogby insists. No one in the Post is going to suggest that perhaps a pollster for The Washington Post or The New York Times is a “liberal constituency.” How transparently odd. Just like the liberal media elite on a daily basis. For them, the playing field cannot be described as conservative professionals vs. liberal professionals — it’s upstart conservative peasants with pitchforks versus the established objective professionals who define the standards for everyone. Of course, Horowitz left out of his Rasmussen profile his latest poll showing how angry the public is with the media , that two-thirds of respondents are angry and say reporters slant the news to favor candidates they want to win. Instead, we get leftists dismissing Rasmussen numbers as “sorcery” that leads to conservative media bias:   Rasmussen said he is simply a “scorekeeper,” but his spike in clout has sharpened skepticism about how he tracks the dip in Democratic fortunes. Frustrated liberals suspect sorcery. Markos Moulitsas, the creator of the Daily Kos blog, has accused the pollster of “setting the narrative that Democrats are doomed” with numbers that fuel hours of Republican-boosting on talk radio and cable. Pardon conservatives if they might find it laughable that Markos Moulitsas as a polling professional, considering he concocts smear polls of “self-identified Republicans.” But are Rasmussen’s numbers accurate? The caption beneath Rasmussen’s picture brings the disturbing news for liberals: “Scott Rasmussen’s polling detected the groundswell for Scott Brown, who won the special election in Massachusetts for the U.S. Senate seat vacated by Ted Kennedy, earlier than most competitors.” That’s what has them worried about his ability to be a “driving force.”

Chris Matthews Claims Tea Party is ‘McCarthyite,’ Sees Federal Government as an ‘Occupying Force’

Chris Matthews definitely took a “hard look” at the Tea Party, on Wednesday’s “Morning Joe,” in anticipation of tonight’s MSNBC documentary “The Rise of the New Right.” Tying the whole Tea Party movement together, the MSNBC “Hardball” host defined it as “McCarthyite,” possessing a “fundamental questioning of authority,” and viewing the federal government as an occupying force. “It believes that this government is verging on tyranny,” Matthews complained, pointing to the movement’s use of the Revolutionary War-era Gadsden flag — “Don’t Tread on Me” — in an ominous light. When asked by Joe Scarborough if he would link members of the Michigan Militia featured in tonight’s documentary (seemingly characterized in the preceding video clip as a radical fringe group), to Tea Party members who have campaigned for Scott Brown and Marco Rubio, Matthews answered that the various groups are all part of one movement. “I’m tying the whole movement together,” he asserted. “Because what you hear is that they all fly the same flag.” Matthews said that the use of the Gadsden flag by Tea Partiers “scared” him. “They are basically looking at the federal government now as an occupying force, basically a foreign occupying force, a tyranny,” he said. “And that justifies a lot of bad behavior, I would say.” “What you hear, Joe, is the fundamental questioning of authority,” Matthews claimed. He also alleged that the movement is pointing to the Second Amendment to justify armed force against the federal government “when the time comes.” Not wanting to be left out of the fun, advertising executive Donny Deutsch, chairman of Deutsch, Inc., threw the race card onto the table. “Chris, along those lines, would the Tea Party be having the same verve if this was not an African-American President?” But Matthews wouldn’t bite. “I don’t know,” he said. “You make those kinds of charges, you get into trouble. I have no idea.” However, Matthews did accuse the movement of being “McCarthyite,” referencing accusations by Dick Armey and Rep. Michelle Bachmann (R-Minn.) of Democrats and administration members of being un-American.     The transcript of the interview, which aired on June 16, at 7:45 a.m. EDT, is as follows: WILLIE GEIST: Chris, as far as you can tell, what is the new right? And how influential is it? CHRIS MATTHEWS: Well, it believes that this government is verging on tyranny. The federal government of the United States, which was honestly elected, is more like a British occupying force of colonial days. They look at it as illegitimate. Many of them believe that Barack Obama is not an American. They believe they need their Second Amendment rights–as Sharon Angle said the other day–to perhaps carry out remedies when they think that Congress is going too far. Very strong on Second Amendment as a way of fighting the federal government, when the time comes; very concerned about the legitimacy of Barack Obama as whether he is an American or not. And, in fact, if you listen to Dick Armey, they wonder whether anybody in the administration has any pro-American attitudes. And Michelle Bachmann would go right through the Democrats in Congress, and have the media investigate them for anti-American attitudes. It’s very much McCarthy-ite, it gets back to the days of questioning other people’s loyalties, and it questions the President’s very legitimacy. And what scared me, if you want to get scared, was the use of the flag from the American Revolution–the Great Gadsden flag from South Carolina, with the coiled rattlesnake. They are basically looking at the federal government now as an occupying force, basically a foreign occupying force, a tyranny. And that justifies a lot of bad behavior, I would say. JOE SCARBOROUGH: Chris, though, you’re not connecting, though, Tea Party members that Mike interviewed in Massachusetts that helped Scott Brown get elected, or Tea Party members that may be supporting Marco Rubio in Florida, or Tea Party members who are supporting other conservative candidates across America–you’re not tying them with members of the Michigan Militia, are you? CHRIS MATTHEWS: Yes, I am. I’m tying the whole movement together. Because what you hear is that they all fly the same flag. Certainly there are people that straggle along and show up at meetings of any political party, whether it’s mainstream or French. People show up and join. I’m not talking about the joiners. I’m talking about the leadership people themselves. Listen to Sharon Angle. Listen to Rand Paul. Listen to their basic questioning of federal authority. It’s very fundamental, and their absolute focus on the Second Amendment over and over again–that guy in that militia uniform with his fatigues on said that he speaks very much the same language as the Tea Party people. He says it. If you listen to people like Michelle Bachmann, they question the legitimacy of the government, they question whether it’s a tyranny or not. You got to hear the words tonight, Joe. These people–wait till you hear Dick Armey talking about “There’s nobody in this administration who is pro-American.” I mean they’re saying it. I’m not saying it. JOE SCARBOROUGH: I’ll be watching. I know that the guy in the camouflage said that the Tea Party people tell him that they’re not connected. But are you connecting–let me be more specific. This is fascinating. Are you connecting Rand Paul with these Michigan Militia members that run around with guns, that– CHRIS MATTHEWS: You know, I think you have to see the absolute resonance of the sound. What you hear, Joe, is the fundamental questioning of authority. You have people who believe that the federal government–look. Joe, I know you saw those Congress people waving the Gadsden flag off the balcony of the Capitol on the House side. They were waving that revolutionary flag. They were the ones inciting those people to look upon the federal government as a tyranny, as perhaps illegitimate. They’re the ones using the language of revolution. It’s not us. In fact, the documentary, all through it, you hear a very similar voice: this government is not legitimate. 32 percent of the Republican Party now believes that Barack Obama is not an American. And that’s the latest CBS Poll. These are not things that are arguable, Joe, these are facts. DONNY DEUTSCH, Chairman, Deutsch, Inc.: Chris, along those lines, would the Tea Party be having the same verve if this was not an African-American President? CHRIS MATTHEWS: I don’t know. I think–I don’t know. That’s something you got to get into people’s souls, and you make those kind of charges, you get into trouble. I have no idea. I do think that– DONNY DEUTSCH: I’m not making charges. I’m asking a question. I just want (Garbled) CHRIS MATTHEWS: I think the fact that so many of the people are–Orelly Tates is out there with the birther movement, which has very much been part of this, saying that the guy’s not an American, that he should be out of office because he was born in Kenya. Challenging that–Alan Keyes, those kinds of people. All those voices are out there on the Right.

Under Pressure, Teachers Tamper With Tests

Cheat Sheet Articles in this series will examine cheating in education and efforts to stop it. The staff of Normandy Crossing Elementary School outside Houston eagerly awaited the results of state achievement tests this spring. For the principal and assistant principal, high scores could buoy their careers at a time when success is increasingly measured by such tests. For fifth-grade math and science teachers, the rewards were more tangible: a bonus of $2,850. Dianne Edwards, top, and Tonia Bush, principal and assistant principal of a school near Houston, resigned in a scandal. But when the results came back, some seemed too good to be true. Indeed, after an investigation by the Galena Park Independent School District, the principal, assistant principal and three teachers resigned May 24 in a scandal over test tampering. The district said the educators had distributed a detailed study guide after stealing a look at the state science test by “tubing” it — squeezing a test booklet, without breaking its paper seal, to form an open tube so that questions inside could be seen and used in the guide. The district invalidated students’ scores. Of all the forms of academic cheating, none may be as startling as educators tampering with children’s standardized tests. But investigations in Georgia, Indiana, Massachusetts, Nevada, Virginia and elsewhere this year have pointed to cheating by educators. Experts say the phenomenon is increasing as the stakes over standardized testing ratchet higher — including, most recently, taking student progress on tests into consideration in teachers’ performance reviews. Colorado passed a sweeping law last month making teachers’ tenure dependent on test results, and nearly a dozen other states have introduced plans to evaluate teachers partly on scores. Many school districts already link teachers’ bonuses to student improvement on state assessments. Houston decided this year to use the data to identify experienced teachers for dismissal, and New York City will use it to make tenure decisions on novice teachers. added by: 2helenahandbasket

ABC News Featured Video: ‘Teens Hail Gay Prom King and Queen’

ABCNews.com on Saturday prominently featured a video about two gay students that won king and queen at their high school’s prom. “Hudson High, typical school with a typical senior prom, but not your every day prom king and queen,” began an unidentified reporter. “Meet Charlie Ferrusi and Tim Howard, class of 2010 prom royalty.” As the piece continued, an unidentified man said, “These are the kids that Dr. Martin Luther King was talking about. They don’t see each other as black and white or gay and straight.” The reporter let viewers know, “Charlie and Tim won in a landslide vote. The reaction has been positive even among parents” (video follows with commentary, h/t NBer SkipperMLM):   For those looking for more on this subject, “Related Links” were provided to videos about: a gay student winning prom queen in Hollywood, California; a Catholic church in Hingham, Massachusetts, not accepting a student because his parents were lesbians, and; plans for a gay and lesbian high school in Chicago falling threw. For the record, the Associated Press also found this story newsworthy.

Justin Bieber Fans Wait Overnight For ‘Today’ Show Performance

‘For Justin Bieber, I’ll do anything,’ one fan tells MTV News. By Nuzhat Naoreen Photo: MTV News & Docs On Thursday afternoon (June 3), Penny Noelle, 10, started standing in line for Justin Bieber’s “Today” show concert on Friday morning. She arrived in New York from Springfield, Massachusetts, equipped with her bag, posters, money, a chair to sleep on overnight and a very patient mom. “For Justin Bieber, I’ll do anything,” Penny told MTV News. She’s not the only one. By Thursday evening, hundreds of fans, including some as young as 5, had already lined the streets outside Rockefeller Plaza in anticipation of the free Bieber concert. Megan Hazelwood, 17, who said she attended one of Justin’s first concerts, convinced her parents to travel 17 hours from Kansas City, Kansas, so she could see him once again. “I’ve never driven 17 hours for anyone but Justin Bieber,” she said. By the time Megan arrived Thursday evening, though, the line already spanned a couple of blocks. Most fans passed the time Thursday night making posters for the concert, singing Bieber’s songs and playing games. Many families also got nearby hotels and took shifts standing in line throughout the night. Joe Pezzino, who drove his daughter seven hours from Buffalo, New York, waited in line alone as his daughter joined some family friends at a nearby hotel for dinner. “I’m keeping busy,” he said. “I’m really caught up on my BlackBerry. I have no e-mails.” Which artist would you wait overnight to see? Tell us in the comments! Related Artists Justin Bieber
