‘Avengers’ Fans Should Feel ‘Exhausted And Fulfilled,’ Joss Whedon Says

At South by Southwest film festival, ‘Cabin in the Woods’ scribe tells MTV News, ‘It’s a ride.’ By Kara Warner Joss Whedon Photo: Michael Buckner/ Getty Images Joss Whedon has a big year ahead of him. In a little more than a month, fans will finally get to see the long-delayed horror movie “The Cabin in the Woods,” followed a few weeks later by the release of one of this summer’s most highly anticipated tent poles, “The Avengers.” When MTV News caught up with Whedon during the South by Southwest film festival press day for “Cabin in the Woods,” we asked him how his superhero film is coming together. “The most satisfying thing about ‘The Avengers’ is that soon I will finish it,” he said with a weary smile. “That’s quite an undertaking — although listening to Alan Silvestri conduct an 80-piece orchestra didn’t suck. It was a really beautiful experience,” he said of watching the Oscar-nominated composer at work. “He did such a great job: You’re listening to live music and watching your movie form in a way that it doesn’t until it has that music. That was exciting.” Another exciting aspect of the filmmaking process was interacting with his A-list actors: Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Mark Ruffalo, Samuel L. Jackson, Clark Gregg and Tom Hiddleston, to name a few. Whedon said he enjoyed “just having them all.” “When they would be together, the energy that they would give each other, the way they play off each other, the way they protect each other narratively, making sure that whoever they were coming up against had as much juice as they did. It would be easy to imagine that they would be all be like ‘me, me, me,’ and it was always ‘us, us, us,’ and that was really fun,” he explained. “Except sometimes they would just gossip so much and talk. ‘Guys, we’re rolling. We have to make a movie. This isn’t a party; this isn’t the green room.’ ” The “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Firefly” mastermind said he hopes audiences feel just as worn out at the end as he was making it. “I want them to feel exhausted and fulfilled,” he shared. “Not unlike ‘Cabin,’ it’s a ride, and we put the screws to them. We really put the characters through it, and we want the audience to be with them every step of the way and come out of it going, ‘That was an extraordinary experience, and now I want to pay to see it again.’ ” Someone who didn’t have to wait to pay to see the finished product is Whedon’s “Cabin” co-writer and director Drew Goddard. “Drew’s seen it: He saw the very first assembly,” Whedon said. “He was one of the first people I came to and said, ‘Where did I go right?’ ” Goddard could only offer a one-word review via third person: “Drew’s been told he’s not allowed to say anything about it,” Goddard said with a smile. “But it’s awesome.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . SXSW 2012 Kicks Off With ‘Cabin In The Woods’

On the South by Southwest film festival red carpet, Joss Whedon tells MTV News the flick had ‘a very weirdly organic genesis.’ By Kara Warner Joss Whedon at SXSW Photo: Michael Buckner/ Getty Images The annual South by Southwest film festival kicked off in splendid, if slightly soggy, fashion Friday night with the world premiere of “Cabin in the Woods.” Amidst unseasonably chilly temperatures and intermittent downpours in Austin, Texas, the film’s cast and crew braved the elements to walk the red carpet ahead of the highly anticipated horror film’s packed screening. “We are so excited to be premiering at South by Southwest: We really couldn’t have asked for a better place to premiere this film,” first-time director Drew Goddard told MTV News. “We feel like we’re a South by Southwest film, so we’re happy to be here. It worked out well for us. “I feel like South by Southwest has a swagger, a rock and roll feel to it. When you hear those words, you feel like their pushing the edge of what’s acceptable in society and I feel like — I hope — that we did the same,” Goddard added, speaking to the film’s intrigue and appeal. “Apparently, South by Southwest is a really rad festival, and I think this is a really rad film, so it’s a good fit,” star Anna Hutchison said. “Also Joss is really excited about it, so if he’s excited, you know that it’s a good thing.” Speaking of co-writer and fan-boy favorite Joss Whedon, the “Avengers” director and “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” mastermind said that the long-delayed and slightly troubled backstory surrounding “Cabin” makes it even more perfect for a SXSW showing. “It was created very independently, and it came up very organically,” Whedon said. “It wasn’t churned out of a studio system. The fact that MGM, Mary Parent was taking a lot of risks. She let us shoot word-for-word exactly what we wrote. That’s the movie we made. Then obviously it had some troubles, and Lionsgate came in, and it had a very weirdly organic genesis.” Co-star Bradley Whitford summed up his SXSW excitement with his love for its host city: “I love, love, love Austin — even when it feels like Iceland,” he said with a smile from under an umbrella. “I love this town, so I was thrilled to be able to come here.” He said “Cabin” has “a very young, hip, humorous, smart, astute thing going on.” Kristen Connolly added: “It’s awesome to know that people are excited about the movie, and it’s awesome to be here. It’s such a cool festival, I’ve wanted to come to it for ages, so I’m thrilled to be here.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . ‘Avengers’ Trailer Launches Online

Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth make their big superhero debut as Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. By Josh Wigler Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr. in “Avengers” Photo: Marvel In 2008, during the final moments of “Iron Man,” the world at large became aware of a phenomenon that comic book readers have known about for years when Samuel L. Jackson, dressed eye to toe in S.H.I.E.L.D. director Nick Fury’s black leather garb, introduced the concept of “the ‘Avengers’ initiative.” Fast-forward almost four full years later, and we’re nearly there: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes are on the cusp of assembling for “Marvel’s ‘The Avengers,’ ” and today (October 11), true believers across the globe are getting their first glimpse at the superhero blockbuster’s all-star roster in action. Directed by Joss Whedon and featuring all of your favorite Marvel heroes including Captain America (Chris Evans), Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and ol’ Shellhead himself (Robert Downey Jr.), “The Avengers” is poised to be the biggest comic book movie of all time … and the trailer certainly helps to sell that epic scope. The “Avengers” trailer , which debuted online at Apple.com , begins with a menacing monologue from familiar adversary Loki, last seen at the end of “Thor” falling into a cosmic abyss. “You were made to be ruled,” he whispers cruelly as shots of carnage and chaos flood the screen, “and in the end, it will be every man for himself.” A quick cut of scenes brings us to Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg) and his boss, Fury, putting their heads together about how best to solve this unknown, ongoing crisis hatched by Loki and his devious plotting. “There was an idea,” Fury says, “to bring together a group of remarkable people, so that when we needed them, they could fight the battles that we never could.” Cue those remarkable people: the Asgardian hero Thor, the time-displaced Steve Rogers, the easily enraged Bruce Banner, the eagle-eyed Clint Barton, the deadly Black Widow and, of course, the eternally arrogant Tony Stark. We see these heroes on the battlefield fighting both alongside each other and against one another, showing just how difficult it’s going to be for these superpowered warriors to get along. But even if they can’t settle their differences, Stark is looking on the bright side: “If we can’t protect the Earth, you can be damned sure that we’ll avenge it.” Between Nick Fury launching a bazooka at an unseen assailant and Banner transforming into “an enormous green rage monster,” we’d say most of our “Avengers” trailer wishes have been fulfilled. The movie assembles in theaters on May 4, 2012. Lady Gaga Shoots ‘Marry The Night’ Video In New York

Cultural center CEO tell MTV News that Gaga was ‘friendly and kind’ during Staten Island video shoot. By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga (file) Photo: Michael Buckner/ Getty Images After multiple reports of Lady Gaga’s Staten Island video shoot for “Marry the Night” hit the Net, MTV News has confirmed that the singer indeed shot her fifth Born This Way clip in her native New York. MTV News caught up with the CEO of the Snug Harbor Cultural Center, where the video was shot on Monday, to get some details about the “Marry the Night” visuals. “We found both her and her crew to be easy to work with and low-key,” Lynn Kelly told us. “I think we would have expected a lot of drama, and the truth is, she is probably the most down-to-earth person. It was endearing. She was friendly and kind.” Lady Gaga “started to cry” the first time she heard the track for “Marry the Night.” New York’s Daily News reports that Gaga was spotted hiding behind a sheet in order to keep her video look concealed from the many onlookers who stopped to catch a glimpse of the star. According to tweets from passersby, dancers and extras were spotted dressed in multiple looks: some as ballerinas and others wearing leopard print. Gaga’s mom was reportedly on set and spoke to some of the Little Monsters. While Gaga remained relatively hidden during the shoot, one fan tweeted that she was spotted sporting thick, black eyeliner with her hair done up. While she wouldn’t reveal any insider details about the video, Kelly did have only the highest praise for Mother Monster. “I think, for us, we’re so excited to have someone of her talent and to have somebody like that shoot here is a sheer honor,” she said. “What her music does for music is so much more than entertainment. It’s connecting to the arts on a much deeper level, and that’s what I hope we can do here.” What are you expecting from the “Marry the Night” video? Let us know in the comments! Charlie Sheen’s Recent Director Hopes Star ‘Gets The Help He Needs’

Rob Margolies worked with embattled actor on indie comedy ‘She Wants Me,’ in which Sheen plays an outsize version of himself. By Eric Ditzian Charlie Sheen Photo: Michael Buckner/ Getty Images Last October, after being handed the script for “She Wants Me” by a friend and producer on the indie comedy, Charlie Sheen signed on to play a small role — an outsize version of himself also named Charlie Sheen. He shot his scenes over the course of a few days, and according to writer/director Rob Margolies, was “on time every day and really reliable and always in a good mood.” But speaking to MTV News on Wednesday from Los Angeles, where he’s in post-production on the movie, the filmmaker said that the Sheen he’s seen in countless recent TV interviews — talking about melting faces and armless children on “Good Morning America,” for example — bears little resemblance to the man who was nothing but professional on set. “Charlie wasn’t like that at all,” Margolies said. “He was completely in control and not on the defensive. No one ever felt uncomfortable. My personal opinion of him has not changed. I hope he gets the help he needs. I believe in him and wish him the best.” Back in the fall — shortly before Sheen’s life took a turn for the worse following a drug-and-porn-star-filled incident at the Plaza Hotel in New York — the actor was having so much fun on the set of “She Wants Me” that he asked Margolies to write another scene in which he could appear. But Margolies declined, telling MTV News additional screen time would have felt artificial and detracted from the original appearance. The film focuses on a couple — he an aspiring filmmaker, she a struggling actress — who move to Los Angeles. A friend of theirs, also an actress trying to make it big, lands a starring role in a Charlie Sheen film and claims she’s even dating him. The couple thinks she’s nuts, until the “Two and a Half Men” star actually shows up one day. His three scenes last about five minutes, according to Margolies. Though the extra scene Sheen requested never came to pass, the actor nonetheless agreed to help finance the production and was rewarded with an executive-producer credit. “He came onboard and gave us a last-minute sum of money to finish the movie in post,” said Margolies, adding that the overall budget was “well under half a million dollars.” They wrapped principal photography last year, shot some pickups in January and hope to put the finishing touches on the film by May with an eye toward selling the flick to a studio. Margolies himself hasn’t been in touch with Sheen in recent weeks, but one of his producing partners has reached out to the embattled star. “They’re close friends, and he’s concerned for him,” he said. While Margolies didn’t offer a hypothesis for what might be ailing Sheen at the moment, he did say he understands why he appears to be so erratic in recent interviews. “He seemed like he was on the defensive in the interviews,” the filmmaker said. “I think he’s just caught off-guard and scared. It’s a result of him feeling like he’s being judged. Most people who are being judged act up. It’s a defense mechanism. I don’t think that’s in direct relation to who he is at all.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Andre 3000 Pops Up On Ke$ha’s ‘Sleazy’ Remix

Outkast MC freshens up the pop star’s Cannibal cut with rare feature. By Mawuse Ziegbe Andre 3000 Photo: Michael Buckner/Getty Images It seems the only way to find spankin’-new Andre 3000 lyrics these days is on the odd remix, and the ATLien definitely picked a left-of-center choice for his latest feature. On Friday (January 14), a remix of Ke$ha’s Cannibal track “Sleazy” hit the Web, outfitted with some brand-new bars from the elusive Outkast MC. The southern spitter uses the revamp to muse about a young kid dealing with a deadbeat dad over the song’s bouncy thump. “We start out so cute in our baby pictures/ That mama shot for our daddy so that he wouldn’t forget you/ He forgot anyway, but hey, one day he’ll remember/ If not, he’s human, I’m human, you human, we’ll forgive him,” he spits. After sounding off about daddy issues, Stacks then rhymes about his playful relationship with the glitter-friendly poptress. “I call her Keisha, she like it because it’s hood to her/ She call me Andre 6000 because I’m good to her,” he says. The remix follows a slew of random guest appearances on records by everyone from DJ Unk to Rich Boy as fans await another full-length release from ‘Dre. Back in 2008, the Love Below lyricist broke down his affinity for jumping on the occasional remix to MTV News , explaining that cooking up another quality solo record is no easy task. “I’ve been doing remixes here and there, and let me tell you, thank God for remixes. I wanna tell everybody who’s been checking out the remixes and things like the John Legend song [‘Green Light’]: In this day and age, those are the things that have kind of been keeping me alive. Because it takes me awhile to record albums,” he said. “I have to kind of build up something to say.” What do you think of Andre 3000’s verse on Ke$ha’s “Sleazy” remix? Let us know in the comments! Amanda Bynes’ Twitter Account Deleted

The actress’ social-networking account, on which she once tweeted her retirement, has been canceled. By Mawuse Ziegbe Amanda Bynes Photo: Michael Buckner/ Getty Images Amanda Bynes’ on-and-off relationship with Twitter appears to have reached a low point. The Twitter account @chicky, which the actress famously used to overshare and rant about her personal and professional life, has been deleted. Bynes, who has sent out childhood pics and declared her very specific taste in men on her Twitter page, famously tweeted her retirement from Hollywood in June . “I don’t love acting anymore, so I’ve stopped doing it,” the starlet wrote at the time. “I know 24 is a young age to retire but you heard it here first I’ve #retired.” Bynes’ announcement came as a shock to her rep, who was blindsided by the news after speaking to her client days earlier and noting she “sounded great.” However, the actress had a change of heart and took to her Twitter page about a month later to reveal she was back on the scene, writing, “I’ve unretired.” This latest move could be related to a desire Bynes’ once expressed about keeping a safe distance from the sometimes harsh glare of the spotlight. “I don’t want to have my face on everything. I just don’t want to be some young brat who is everywhere,” a then-18-year-old Bynes told MTV News in 2005. “It sickens me.” The young actress also copped to not always being on the same page as her Hollywood peers. “I don’t really relate to that many people who are my age, especially in this business.” Fans may not be getting updates about her fluctuating retirement status anymore, but moviegoers will be able to catch Bynes in the upcoming flick “Easy A.” The actress plays a judgmental teen out to ruin the life of a faux good-time girl in the high school comedy, which hits theaters September 17.
