Michigan Passes Law Requiring Welfare Recipients To Do Community Service Republicans in Michigan have passed a law that will now require welfare recipients to perform community service. via Battle Creek Enquirer State lawmakers passed bills Wednesday that would deny unemployment benefits to people who refuse to take drug tests required by employers. It also would require community service for people receiving government assistance. The drug testing bill, which passed the House Commerce Committee on a 12-4 vote with three Democrats passing on the issue, would deny unemployment benefits for people who either refused to take a drug test required by an employer or tested positive. The community service bill, which passed the state Senate on a 27-9 vote would require people receiving food stamps or other welfare benefits to perform community service in order to get the money. Oh gawd! Big Sean Brings School Supplies To Detroit Via HuffPo reports: It wasn’t surprising that Kanye West protégé and rising star Big Sean inspired this much excitement in Detroit, his hometown. But the location was a bit out of the ordinary — as he made press rounds for his new album, “Hall of Fame,” he spent a good chunk of Thursday afternoon handing out backpacks to kids in a building normally used as a farmers market. A couple thousand students crowded Detroit Public Schools’ back-to-school fair in Eastern Market, where they could learn about careers, play educational games, do science experiments and receive supplies. Organized by the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan, new MBA students had just three days after arriving for their first semester to plan the event. “DPS needs this more than anybody,” said Big Sean (real name: Sean Anderson), who recently launched the Sean Anderson Foundation to help young people in Detroit. “Hopefully this is just the first of many events we can do to … help give back.” “I wanted to make sure that when I looked back at my life I did something that I was proud of, that I left a legacy,” he added. “Of course I make a lot of fun music, all sorts of songs, but I’m definitely going to make songs to inspire, to do my part for the community, especially for the kids in Detroit.”

3-Year-Old Boy Dies After Shooting Himself With Family Gun An Ohio man is set to face charges and possible prison time after the 3-year-old son of his friend fatally shot himself in the head with a gun that he found in his home. via CNN A 3-year-old boy in a small Michigan town was killed over the weekend when he accidentally shot himself in the head with a gun he found on the closet floor of his home. The shooting death will undoubtedly renew the debate about gun safety, particularly after the boy’s father took to Facebook calling for it. The incident took place Sunday at a home in Dundee, near the Ohio border. Police said Damon Holbrook discovered the gun, which belonged to a family friend who was living in the house. Authorities told CNN affiliate WXYZ that the family friend, Joshua Greenhill, had a concealed pistol license and he put the .40 caliber handgun in the closet. It was loaded, with a bullet in the chamber — but was not locked. Three other children were in the house at the time. Greenhill, was charged with careless discharge of a firearm — a misdemeanor which carries a sentence of up to 2 years in prison or a fine of $2,000 What is it with people keeping their registered guns in easy-to-find places??? Rush Limbaugh Says The Downfall Of Detroit Is Black People Via NYDailyNews Rush Limbaugh claimed the large black population in Detroit caused a “white flight” from the urban center to suburbia, ultimately leading to the city’s demise. The conservative radio host told Fox News’ Greta Van Susteren Tuesday that civil rights protests in the ’60s caused white residents to flee, with the Detroit’s first African-American Mayor Coleman Young largely to blame for causing the unrest in 1967, according to Limbaugh. “Detroit is left with nothing but liberal Democrats running it,” he said, adding the Michigan town was a “petri dish of everything the Democrat Party stands for,” with a preponderance of unions, pension and health care for people after they retire. A review of the interview by ThinkProgress pointed out that Young didn’t become mayor of Detroit until 1973, several years after the riots in 1967. Detroit Mayor Dave Bing, who is African-American, announced July 18 that the city of Detroit filed for Chapter 9 bankruptcy protection in federal court. Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder, who is white, called the move a “difficult step,” but the “only viable option to address a problem that has been six decades in the making.” Census data from 2010 shows 83% of Detroit’s total population is black — the highest percentage of African-Americans for any U.S. city. Four-Year-Old Finds Marijuana Pipe in Burger King Kids Meal

A Michigan Burger King franchise apparently feels that when it comes to its slogan “Have It Your Way,” the way four-year-olds want it is really baked. A family found a marijuana pipe in their four-year-old’s kid’s meal box, according to reports. Instead of a Jungle Book toy, they got a glass bowl. Tight. The boy’s grandpa went to the Dundee, Mich., restaurant to pick up his burger, then discovered that fries weren’t the only item it came with on the side. Dundee Police Chief David Uhl said the pipe was full, too: “He handed the kid’s meal that he had gotten at Burger King to his 4-year-old grandson and when they opened it up they found a loaded marijuana pipe.” The boy’s parents were “on top of it,” he said, and removed the piece, which a 23-year-old employee hid in the meal box earlier while he was at work. It was then inadvertently filled with food and given to the young customer, and the employee was charged with drug and paraphernalia possession. This gets stranger still. After making the discovery, grandfather noted a “suspicious” car in the parking lot and wrote down the license plate number. The kids in the car, 18 and 20, turned out to be friends of the BK employee who attempted to warn him when cops were called in to handle the matter. They were arrested and charged with drug possession as well. Burger King said in a statement: “This Burger King restaurant is owned and operated by a franchisee who enforces a zero-tolerance drug policy.” “The franchise management team is cooperating fully with [police]. BK and the franchisee extend a sincere apology to the guests involved in this incident.” Silver lining for BK? They’re far from alone in this regard: A Wendy’s employee was seen guzzling Frosty from the machine . A Taco employee was photographed licking shells . Golden Corral stores meat by the dumpster . Taylor Chapman went on a racist rant against Dunkin Donuts employees after not receiving … check that, DD actually handled that one well.
