Fabolous Stops By MTV News’ ‘RapFix Live’!

Loso answers fans’ Twitter questions and (maybe) breaks down elements of his signature tending topics on Thursday. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Shaheem Reid Fabolous Photo: Jonathan Leibson/ WireImage Fabolous walks a fine line, maintaining his presence on the underground mixtape circuit and cultivating a mainstream persona with his album releases. His most recent project, There Is No Competition 2: The Grieving Music EP, stems from the similarly titled mixtape There Is No Competition 2: The Funeral Service. Both collections serve as a warm-up to Fab’s next album, Loso’s Way 2. According to the Def Jam rapper, if he had to choose another MC to take a turn on the mixtape scene, his choice would come down to two fellow New York lyricists. “A Nas mixtape would be crazy, a Hov one too,” he told MTV News. “We haven’t seen any of the icons do it [in a while]. I think somewhere, we need a place where Hov doesn’t have to talk corporate and Nas doesn’t have to get too deep on us. We need one of those. I just wanna hear Nas [rapping], ‘Splittin’ Phillies, sippin’ on Baileys with three Israelis.’ I don’t know if he’s still in that space,” Fab said, reciting one of the God MC’s memorable mixtape freestyles. “A lot of things have transpired since. And I wanna hear Hov talk his thing. He still talks his thing and Nas still talks his thing, but I wanna see them in their mixtape essence.” Fabolous will talk mixtapes and more on Thursday when he appears on MTV News’ “RapFix Live” live stream with Sway on MTV.com at 1 p.m. ET. So, wondering why Loso still releases mixtapes after all his success? Ready for the inside scoop on his next project? Want to ask Fabolous about his recent rift with Soulja Boy Tell’em ? Tweet questions to the Brooklyn MC at @MTVNews with #rapfixlive or upload video questions to him at Your.MTV.com and Sway may get them on-air. Rick Ross Buries Twitter Feud With ‘Fire’ Slim Thug Collabos

‘I leaked ‘Paid the Cost,’ just to show the haters,’ Ross tells Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid Rick Ross Photo: MTV News The O.D.: A Mixtape Daily Exclusive Rick Ross says he didn’t fire shots. It was just a rap reference that he had no intention of putting out anyway. A couple of weeks ago, a track leaked to the mixtape circuit and the Internet labeled “King Boss.” Mr. Rozay rapped on the song, “She dated Slim Thug, but now she f— with me/ She finally made it to the biggest boss luckily.” Slim Thugger quickly took to his Twitter page with a question — and a retort. “WTF @rickyrozay is that a diss?” Slim wrote. “Just threw @rickyrozay cd out the roof of the coupe haters get no play in my ride.” Well, before things got too far out of hand, Ross and Thugger talked , hammered out the misunderstanding and actually banged out a couple of new, official songs. One of them, “Paid the Cost,” is out now. “First of all, I wanna salute the homie, Slim Thugga,” Ross said on Saturday in Los Angeles during the MTV VMA Radio Forum. “Maybe two weeks ago, a record had surfaced that I recorded before I even met Slim Thug. Just not knowing the dude and made the record and, after the fact, maybe four or five years later, the record leaked. He responded in a way that was totally understandable. What was funny about that situation is that Slim Thug is actually an artist that after I met him, embraced me and showed me the most love. The homie, Slim Thug, and I gotta salute the homie, Trae Tha Truth.” Ross said that Slim and Trae always roll out the red carpet for him when he goes to H-Town. “For a record to surface and me being a little slow on Twitter, I didn’t really peep it until two days later,” Ross continued. “When I found out about it and heard about it, they said I’m dissing Slim Thug. ‘What’s the name of the record? “King Boss”?’ he remembered asking. “I never had a record called ‘King Boss.’ I just left it alone. After the fact, [Slim] asked me about it. I told the homie, ‘Of course it ain’t nothing but love between me and you, big dawg.’ We got in the studio, later that night. The night we spoke. I emailed him something; shot him something, did something for his album. It’s fire. Then I leaked ‘Paid the Cost,’ just to show the haters.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines . Related Artists Rick Ross (Hip-Hop) Slim Thug

50 Cent’s Twitter Tirades Hit Jay-Z, Diddy, Shaq

G-Unit general tells Mixtape Daily Ice Cube inspires him to experiment with different mediums By Shaheem Reid 50 Cent Photo: Getty Images/Jakubaszek Celebrity Favorites: 50 Cent Ah. It was but just three years ago around this time, VMA time, when the nation was divided: Kanye West or 50 Cent. Both were dropping albums on September 11. Fast-forward to 2010 — the hip-hop nation is once again forced to decide. This time, though, it’s not about music; it’s about who sends the most interesting tweets. Both ‘Ye and 50 caught on to Twitter later than most people, but they have made up for it in impact. Kanye usually tweets about what’s going on in his life, while 50 is unpredictable, taking a comedic stance in many instances. Monday, the G-Unit general went on Twitter overload, writing about everything from squashing his quarrels with Diddy and Jay-Z to playing new music for Eminem and having sex with a woman he says also slept with Shaquille O’Neal. “So I saw jayZ backstage at the show,” he wrote, “so I say What’s up n—a we gone kill each other or what he like And fuck up the money I aint witIt lol.” Regarding Chairman Combs, he wrote, “I talk to puffy he said n—a da shit you be doing is bad for business we can make a lot of money together. so that’s the last puffy hit lol.” Last week in Detroit, before getting onstage with Eminem at the second of the Motor City shows in Comerica Park, Fif explained his tweet tirades. “You know what’s interesting? I look at that platform as another place to express yourself in a different way, to entertain,” he said. “Not necessarily to create a perception of your actual character, but to be entertaining. When other people used it, it was boring because they were trying to be safe, be politically correct. They gave you the presentation they were taught to give you after they were prepped for publicity. What I gave you was some of the things I’ve seen that were entertaining topic-wise — things that made me laugh. I think it’s healthy to smile. Even though I may have the persona as one of the darkest people in hip-hop culture, you seen me smile as often as — probably more often as — somebody you seen placed in that category.” Fif also cited Ice Cube as an influence — not necessarily as a muse for Twitter, but for expressing himself differently in a multiple of mediums. “Ice Cube is one of my favorites,” he said. “I admire what he’s done with his life and career. But when you look at every Ice Cube CD, it’s the same photo [a scowl]. He’s fixin’ to kill you.” “I understand, because the tone of the music matches that expression,” he continued. “But, that’s entertainment versus what you see him doing in ‘Lottery Ticket,’ doing other things to express himself in a different platform. That allows him to be successful in a different way.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines or follow the Mixtape Daily team on Twitter: @shaheemreid and @mongosladenyc . Chris Brown, Tyga Planning Fan Of A Fan Tour

Tyga explains success of ‘Deuces’ to Mixtape Daily : ‘The people chose the record.’ By Shaheem Reid Chris Brown and Tyga Photo: Courtesy of Young Money The O.D.: A Mixtape Daily Exclusive Chris Brown is in the #1 film in the country, “Takers,” and now that he’s done with Hollywood (for now), he’s going back to the lab. “Me, I’m definitely writing on other people’s projects. A lot of in-house stuff,” Brown said recently in L.A. “I got a lot of artists coming out. The single ‘Deuces’ features one of my artists K-Mac and Tyga [from Young Money]. I’m pushing forward. The movie’s out, so I’mma have fun.” “Deuces” is in the top 30 of Billboard ‘s Hot 100 charts and #1 on urban radio. The record’s success is simply due to fan support. It’s part of Brown and Tyga’s Fan of a Fan mixtape and skyrocketed once the video hit virally and on MTV Jams. “That was actually Chris’ idea,” Tyga told us about putting out a visual for the song. “I thought the record was dope. I thought it was dope for us to do that video. He got to explain his situation. It connects to his fans. His fans miss that from him. “I think the people chose the record,” Tyga added. “We put the mixtape out, and we asked them: What record do you like the most? They was like, ‘Deuces.’ It was always coming up. It was growing on YouTube as well, like 100,000 views a day on YouTube. It was his idea to shoot the video. My homie Colin Tilly, he’s done all my videos. He’s done everything. All my mixtape stuff to the bigger stuff I’m doing now. He got it right. It’s what people wanna see, what they wanna hear.” Despite the overwhelming success of Fan of a Fan, Tyga said he and Chris aren’t planning an official LP, but they are hitting the road together. “I don’t think you wanna drown people too much,” Tyga said about making a full album with Brown. “We’ve been doing a lot of stuff, though. He’s on my album. We’re actually working on a tour right now. A Fan of Fan Tour at the end of the year. It’ll be dope.” Tyga has an album coming out soon; it doesn’t have a release date yet. But his next mixtape, Well Done, will hit within the next couple of weeks. It’s going to be a Gangsta Grillz edition. “I feel like I had to deal with [DJ] Drama. He reminded of Wayne, when he did Dedication with him,” Tyga explained. “[Wayne] was going in on every beat. All the mixtapes I’ve been dropping, they’re close to albums. They’re more songs. They have more content. This one, I wanted to rap on everybody’s beat and murder every beat that’s out. It’s fun to do that. It’s easy. I can knock that out real fast. I think Drama is dope when you wanna link up and murder beats like that.” Some of the tracks Tyga is pilfering are Soulja Boy’s “Pretty Boy Swag” and Nicki Minaj’s “Your Love.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines . Freddie Gibbs Is ‘Carrying The Torch’

Gary, Indiana, MC tells Mixtape Daily he won’t duplicate, but ‘I’m trying to do this gangsta music.’ By Shaheem Reid, with additional reporting by Rahman Dukes Freddie Gibbs Monday’s Main Pick Street King : Freddie Gibbs Holding It Down For : The Midwest Mixtape : Str8 Killa (EP); Str8 Killa No Filla (mixtape) Real Spit : Gangsta Gibbs doubled up a few weeks ago with the selections you’ll read about here. He gave most of his music away for free, but tried his hand at bringing home sales as well. “I did that,” Freddie Gibbs said . “I dropped a mixtape on Thursday and the following Tuesday, I dropped an EP in stores. “Really, what I wanted to do was go get some points on the board. Put something in the stores for my fans to support and still give them music like I’ve been giving them on the Internet. You get like 28 songs for eight bucks. I’m creating my own way to sell music. I feel like the ground-roots people that’s supporting is loving the music, so it’s cool. “Str8 Killa No Filla is the mixtape. It’s got 22 joints. The EP is Str8 Killa. On the EP, you’re gonna get the songs off of the mixtape with no samples. It’s a lovely package. We packaged it together real nice.” Gibbs, whose official LP Babyface Killa is being cooked up now, said the name Str8 Killa is just his declaration that he doesn’t deal with the B.S. “I’m trying to do this gangsta music,” he said. “I just wanted to hit people right in the mouth with this. Let the world know what I’m on. Let them know I’m at the forefront of this. That’s what I grew up on. That’s the music everybody gravitated towards in the early ’90s. I’m not trying to duplicate that, but I’m carrying the torch.” Joints To Check For :

Idris Elba Working On ‘Takers’ Mixtape, Praises Co-Stars T.I., Chris Brown

‘I’m gonna get superstar records on there,’ he tells Mixtape Daily of tape due same day as August 27 flick. By Shaheem Reid Idris Elba Photo: Getty Images The O.D.: A Mixtape Daily Exclusive Idris Elba is a big superstar, much deserving of all of the accolades, but don’t act like we didn’t put you up on his backstory as a DJ more than half a decade ago. When he’s not filming box-office blockbusters like “Obsessed” and this month’s upcoming “Takers,” he’s still getting it in behind the wheels of steel. Elba lays it down at the club during live sets and he’s still entrenched in the mixtape scene. In fact, he’s working on a major project to complement his latest film. “Takers mixtape; the film comes out on the 27th. I’m gonna put the tape out the same day as the film,” Idris told Mixtape Daily when we caught up with him over the weekend in Los Angeles. Elba, T.I., Chris Brown, Hayden Christensen and Jay Hernandez were all in the City of Angels doing press for the thriller. “I’m gonna get superstar records on there, some exclusives,” Elba continued. “But I’m also trying to get some people that follow me on Twitter, people that have been following and supporting ‘Takers’ to submit a couple records on the mixtape. Hopefully, it’ll be on Mixtape [Daily]. You can review the jam for me. I’ll throw a couple of my own songs on the jam, too — so be careful.” In the film, Elba plays Gordon Cozier, the leader of a team of highly educated, highly skilled, high-life-loving bank robbers. And yes, they play for high stakes. Gordon has just a few days to mastermind a seemingly impossible armored-car heist that would net the group tens of millions of dollars. At the same time, Gordon has family strife to confront: His sister leaves a drug rehab facility early and, almost immediately, falls off the wagon. “The truck scene. That truck thing, very, very exciting and unique,” Elba said of his favorite stunt in the film. As for his music-making co-stars, Grammy winners T.I. and Chris Brown, the British-born actor said he was impressed with their abilities as thespians. “They’re performers, number one,” Elba assessed. “And in this film, we’re being charismatic bad boys. That’s what going on. Chris and T.I., they got plenty of that.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines . Game’s Brake Lights Tape Is ‘Like A Real Album,’ DJ Skee Says

‘This time around, it’s a lot higher [quality],’ Skee tells Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid DJ Skee Photo: MTV News The O.D.: A Mixtape Daily Exclusive If you’ve been following the Game’s new Twitter page, you’ll see that his fans have given resounding kudos to his new mixtape, Brake Lights. The project was produced by Cool & Dre and hosted by DJ Skee and was released at midnight Tuesday online. “Reason we named it Brake Lights is because it’s something you don’t see if you’re following us often — we don’t stop,” Skee said from his SkeeTV headquarters. “We just had to talk about it. Plus we just did The R.E.D. Album with Game. The biggest difference between this and The Red Room [mixtape] is, I think, the quality of records. This time around, it’s a lot higher. We got some crazy features, more original stuff. It’s not really any freestyles over other people’s beats. It’s all original music. So it’s really like a real album. We’re going back to those classic Game/ DJ Skee street-album days. It’s gonna be pretty crazy.” Included on the tape is “Street Riders,” on which guest MC Nas references Pharrell Williams by name and throws some subliminals at 50 Cent. “I showed n—as their first Bentley/ How the f— I window shop?” he raps. “We’ve actually had it done forever,” Skee said. “It was actually supposed to be on the Doctor’s Advocate album. It didn’t make it for one reason or another. There’s been a bunch of different reincarnations of the song. … I actually have eight different versions of the song. Game, he went back in. He said, ‘It’s time to do it.’ Cool & Dre did the beat. So we was like, ‘Let’s throw it on the mixtape. It’s probably never going to come out other than that.’ I played a snippet of it on the radio years ago, and fans have been going crazy since then. We threw that on. Game did two new verses. He wanted to make it more relevant for today. You have a crazy Nas verse. Akon kills the hook. It’s one of the craziest, darkest Cool & Dre beats. It’s one of my favorite Game records ever. So it’s finally out, Brake Lights, it’s official.” The Compton star brings in another West Coast giant on “Trading Places.” “It’s the second song on the mixtape,” Skee described. “The beat, when I heard it, it just sounded like something different. Game and Snoop Dogg on a record. West Coast — what more could you want?” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines . Related Videos Mixtape Daily: Drake, Bun B

Rick Ross Tells The Story Behind Drake’s Extended ‘Aston Martin Music’

Ross tells Mixtape Daily we might see the unofficial track on a Teflon Don re-release. By Shaheem Reid Rick Ross Photo: MTV News The O.D.: A Mixtape Daily Exclusive Rick Ross’ Teflon Don LP came out Tuesday (July 20), and by now, if you’ve been listening to the radio and the mixtapes, you’ve already heard the extended version of “Aston Martin Music,” a highlight of the project. The track features Chrisette Michele and Drake sharing hook duties. On the extended version, which is not on the album, Drake adds a rap verse. Ross stopped by our 1515 headquarters on Monday to explain Drizzy’s extra vocals. “It boils down to me having the idea, the concept,” Ross said. “Shout-out to J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League. I got the production from the J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League. I wanted to do something else, two-seater music. That’s what I like to call it when it’s personal music for you and that special female that’s riding shotgun in a two-seater. Chrisette Michele, she was on ‘Mafia Music 2.’ She came to Miami to film the video. I got her in the studio to do the first half of this idea I had, which is ‘Aston Martin Music.’ She was like, ‘What you mean just do half of the chorus?’ I was like, ‘Yeah, just do half. I’mma save the other half.’ ” Trusting Ross’ direction, the singer got in and laid the vocals we hear today: “Riding to the music, this is how we do it/ All night/ Racing down the freeway/ Just me and my baby/ In our ride.” “She loved the beat. She wrote her lyrics,” Ross continued of Michele’s session for “Aston Martin.” “It took her 10, 15 minutes to cut her vocals. I’m sitting there like, ‘Wow. All right, all right.’ At that point, I didn’t know who was gonna sing the second half.” The Bawse said listening to Drake’s new album, in his leisure time, inspired him to make that call to his friend from Toronto. “I sent it to the homie,” the Miami rap lord described. “He laced me. Right then, he was ready to jump on his verse. Right then, he was ready to cock and load. I was like, ‘I know you finishing your joint. Just give me that half a chorus, and I’mma make it do what it do. He loved the record. I got it back. He laced it at the point. When he heard [the finished version], it was magic. He was like, ‘I’m finnin’ to go in the studio, Ross. I’mma need to get on that.’ ” A version of the song with just an extended chorus and Drake’s verse called “Paris Morton Music” came out shortly after “Aston Martin Music” leaked to the Net almost two weeks ago. “I talk slicker than a pimp from Augusta,” Drake raps on the track. Then, one of Ross’ engineers mixed Drake’s verse and extended chorus with the album version of “AMM,” and that song has lived on the Net and mixtapes ever since. It’s also getting play on the radio. Ross said he has no problems with an unofficial extended version of “AMM” being out. He might even include it on a repackaging of Teflon Don in the future. “It’s only right,” Ross said. “I got on [Drake’s] first single [‘Find Your Love’]. He even put a twist on the title after some sexy ladies, I believe. It made it feel good. That’s what that music is about. On that re-release, that deluxe packaging, that’s what you may get. You never know.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines or follow the Mixtape Daily team on Twitter: @shaheemreid and @mongosladenyc .
