French Montana ‘Wasn’t Gonna Do’ XXL Freshman Cover

‘I felt like I deserved it two years ago,’ Bad Boy rapper tells ‘RapFix Live.’ By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway The cover of XXL ‘s Freshman issue Photo: MTV News French Montana has been grinding for years, but to many the XXL Freshman is still a relative newcomer. Though he has more than a dozen mixtapes, Montana has yet to release his debut album — it’s scheduled to drop July 17. Still, French initially felt he had surpassed the current crop of rap rookies and almost turned down the cover opportunity, until he thought about it a little more. “I kinda like wasn’t gonna do it, because I felt like I deserved it two years ago, last year. You know how that goes,” French told Sway on Wednesday’s episode of “RapFix Live.” After a meeting with the magazine’s staff, French changed his mind and agreed to shoot the cover with rappers like his Bad Boy labelmate Machine Gun Kelly, Iggy Azalea and Future. “They were like, ‘This is based upon if you don’t have an album out.’ But to me I looked at it as another stepping stone because I respect everything they do,” French told Sway. “I said, ‘I really don’t have no album out and I’m still like a rookie to the mainstream world.’ ” It’s been a long road for the Morocco-born, Bronx, New York-raised rapper. Wanting to make a name for himself, French started a series of street-flavored DVD documentaries that he branded “Cocaine City” in 2003. He covered the hottest rap talent but created a platform where he could show off his own music as well. The tactic worked, but it did have some setbacks. “My vision for that was a platform for me to showcase my talent,” he said. “When we were doin’ the ‘Cocaine City’ DVDs, we kinda like attacked a lot of rappers, because, you know, negativity spreads faster. So you did what you had to do. So it backfired on me when I was trying to rap.” Frenchie feels that his negative coverage of other MCs caused him to be blackballed in the industry, but he continued to put out music. Now his “Shot Caller” single is climbing up the Billboard rap charts and the release of his debut album, Excuse My French, will be overseen by Diddy and Rick Ross. And, of course, French Montana appears on the XXL Freshman cover. Things are looking up. What do you think of French Montana’s inclusion on the 2012 XXL Freshman cover? Tell us in the comments! Did you know Kanye West doesn’t talk on the phone? To get in touch with him, you have to email him. At least that’s what French Montana claims … and that’s why he didn’t sign with him. French Montana was in talks with a bunch of people, but ended up taking his talent to Bad Boy Records after a bidding war … and it turns out, Kanye’s lack of phone has something to do with his choice. French Montana claims he didn’t sign over to Kanye West’s G.O.O.D. Music label because it was too hard to get in contact with him. “Kanye doesn’t have a phone. If you need to get in contact with Kanye, you have to email him,” the 27-year-old New York rapper told Angie Martinez . “You can’t tell me how to do that. I don’t know how to use an email, so I guess me and you is never gonna talk, and I’ma put my career in your hands? He’s definitely talented and I felt like if I went there, we would have definitely made history.” RELATED: Amber Rose’s Ex-Publicist Accuses Her Of Stealing Money From Kanye French Montana Signs To Bad Boy, Will Diddy Ruin His Career? French Montana Plans Throne-Style LP With Waka Flocka

French tells Mixtape Daily the joint album will drop in five weeks. By Rob Markman French Montana Photo: MTV News Celebrity Favorites: French Montana Don’t expect rap’s tag-team trend to die anytime soon. In its first week, Jay-Z and Kanye West’s Watch the Throne moved more than 430,000 copies and snagged the #1 spot on the Billboard albums chart. Gucci Mane and Waka Flocka Flame also charted, selling more than 16,000 copies of their Ferrari Boyz LP. New York City’s French Montana is up next. “I got an album coming out with me and Waka. It’s called Lock Out. It’s gonna be out in five weeks,” French told Mixtape Daily of his new project. “The first single is called ‘I Want It.’ It’s crazy. It’s some crunk, like some ‘Choppa Down,’ but on steroids.” French rose to prominence in an unconventional way, first by creating the “Cocaine City” street DVD series, in which he showcased his music and the music of others. He has since collaborated with Akon, Max B, Rick Ross, Gucci Mane and Waka Flocka Flame, making a name for himself in rap’s underground. Last year, Montana dropped “Choppa Down” with Waka, and now his current single, “Shot Caller,” is heating up the streets. While he isn’t currently signed, the former Konvict Music MC is planning the release of his debut LP. “I got that Excuse My French joint — it’s coming like late this year or early next year — but for now I’m just doing the street album,” he said before talking about the different contracts being thrown his way. “I ain’t gonna let the cat out the bag, but it’s about seven labels right now. So we’re just workin’, lookin’ for the best one.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines . Related Artists French Montana Waka Flocka Flame

Future’s Latest Mixtape Based On A True Story

‘I just wanted to go in and paint the picture for the streets,’ the ‘Tony Montana’ MC tells Mixtape Daily. By Rob Markman, with reporting by James Smith Future Photo: MTV News Main Pick Headliner : Future Representing : Atlanta Mixtape : True Story Real Spit : The future is hard to predict, but the mixtape scene down South has long been a crystal ball of sorts when it comes to gauging new rap talent. And if his street buzz is any indication, Atlanta representative Future has plenty of bright days ahead. After establishing his sound on the DJ Scream-hosted 1000 and Dirty Sprite tapes and, of course, on the chorus on YC’s infectious “Racks,” Future has returned with his latest mixtape, True Story. “The mixtape True Story, everything on it from the beginning to the end is based on a very true story, and I just wanted to go in and paint the picture for the streets,” the rapper told Mixtape Daily. Raised in the infamous Zone 6 section of Atlanta, Future found musical inspiration in the form of his cousin Rico Wade of the Dungeon Family (Outkast, Goodie Mob). It was Future’s producer cousin who encouraged him to hone his writing abilities and that support ultimately led to the MC putting out local favorites like “Watch This,” “Yeah, Yeah” and the ladies anthem “Stand.” On True Story, Future puts his pen on full display, crafting catchy hooks over dirty southern bounce beats. The results are enjoyable, the subject matter varied. There’s the strip-club inspired “Magic” and the hustler’s ode, “Tony Montana.” On “Long Time Coming,” Future gets nostalgic and writes a letter to a lost love. Waka Flocka Flame and Scooter assist on the lighthearted “Annoying,” and newly signed G-Unit member Shawty Lo helps out on the lost-homey dedication “Bigger Picture.” While True Story chronicles the rapper’s sometimes difficult come-up, it does provide some hope that the days to come for Future will be worth the struggle. Cry Me A River: Montana Fishburne Says The D.A.’s Office Won’t Let Her Be Great

Back in September, when Lawrence Fishburne’s spotty-booty daughter went to rehab, we thought she was genuinely trying to get her life together. It turns out her rehab was part of a plea deal which the L.A. Attorney is now trying to renege on, TMZ reports . TMZ has learned Montana’s lawyer, Shawn Chapman Holley, filed blistering legal papers in L.A. Wednesday, claiming last June, prosecutors who filed the assault case agreed to allow Montana to enter a rehab program for 90 days, and in return she’d get no jail time. Holley says Montana, relying on the L.A. City Attorney’s offer, entered a rehab facility, where she’s been since September. According to Holley, prosecutors did an about-face in November and told her they wanted Montana to serve 120 days in jail. Now Holley has gone to the judge, asking her to enforce the deal her client relied on. TMZ has learned … Montana has now decided to spend 180 days in the rehab facility. She better be in there getting some guidance and healing and not just trying to duck a sentence! You know… so her dad doesn’t have to suffer through any more Black Men’s spreads. SMH.
