Marine Reportedly Killed by Mercenaries High on Opium

Pentagon originally said Marine killed in combat. The Pentagon confirmed late Tuesday that it is investigating the death of a 24-year-old Indiana Marine after he was shot to death in Afghanistan, allegedly by several US-paid private security contractors. The contractors, according to a fellow Marine in Afghanistan who communicated with an investigative reporter in Chicago, were Afghanis who were found with “copious amounts of opium” and had been paid by the United States as guards. “He was killed by American Hired Local National Contractors that were high on opium the morning of the 19th,” the ABC reporter quotes a friend and fellow colleague of Lance Corporal Joshua Birchfield as saying in an email message. Lance Corporal Joshua Birchfield was killed after being shot in the head Feb. 19. The Department of Defense originally reported that he died of “small arms fire” while in combat. But the story is apparently darker and more complex — raising questions of whether the Pentagon originally concealed information about the Marine's death. The Chicago Marine who tipped off the ABC reporter purportedly wrote a detailed email surrounding the circumstances of Birchfield's death. In it, he asserts that the young Marine was killed by Afghanis paid as private contractors. “These men are armed to the teeth and supposedly here for our protection,” the fellow Marine is said to have emailed. “We have been shot at by the contractors on several cases before this incident. We have been told to refrain from returning fire and attempt to identify ourselves as Marines so they stop shooting.” “They are also drug abusers,” he continued. “The shooter was found to have copious amounts of wet opium on him shortly after the shooting … we found a bag of wet opium in the compound that the contractors were using to get high.” “A mix of drugs and gray areas of loyalty between U.S. forces and Taliban seems to be the motivation behind the shooting,” he added. The Pentagon, announcing an investigation into the death on Wednesday, declined to say what exactly they were investigating. more at link… Afghanistan is the drug war. Confirmed: Elin Woods Moves Back in with Tiger, Couple Working on "Rebuilding His Image"

We reported this earlier today but could not confirm it until now. Elin Nordegren Woods has agreed to return with Tiger Woods to their Isleworth home in Florida. “I call them the divorced married couple,” says a People source who reported the news. “Elin knows Tiger has issues and is afraid to go near him romantically.” “Because of the children and his need to return to golf, she’ll try to live in the house with a wall between them,” adds the source, also confirmed by other sites. Of course, her motivation for moving back in is debatable. “The marriage is smoke and mirrors, but Elin Woods will help Tiger rebuild his image and gain new sponsorships because this is what his life is about,” the source says. “She is doing this more for the kids and holding the family together.” STANDING BY HER MAN : But for the right reasons? Insiders also say Woods will not return to golf until he is once again at the top of his game, which he isn’t, having been away from his daily routine for so long. As for Elin, sources say if nothing else, she is a major asset in the image damage control project after the Tiger Woods scandal and rebuilding his confidence. “Elin will put a new face on platonic relationships,” a source speculates. Agrees another: “What is really between them is of no interest to golf sponsors. The world’s perception of them as the perfect family is what they like to see.” Looks like her painful choice wasn’t really that painful. Just corporate. Elin Woods staying with Tiger is totally …

Mysterious Creator of ChatRoulette Revealed: A 17 Year-Old Kid, Naturally

If you aren’t already familiar with it, ChatRoulette’s the hot new form of extreme internet voyeurism (and insanity). Essentially, it’s video-chatting with total strangers, and flying through them with a “next” button. And now, its creator’s been revealed… …as a 17 year-old Russian kid. Via the New York Times’ Bits blog , who, capturing a common sentiment, were “utterly fascinated with, and sometimes repulsed by” Chatroulette, emailed its creator, and finally, heard back: The question was answered on Saturday when Andrey Ternovskiy responded to the questions we sent to an e-mail address on Chatroulette. Mr. Ternovskiy said he was a 17-year-old high school student in Moscow. “I was not sure whether I should tell the world who I am mainly because of the fact that I am under age. Now I think that it would be better to reveal myself,” Mr. Ternovskiy wrote. Of course ChatRoulette was created by a computer whizkid. It’s at both so ingenious—and so insane—that it would take the sense of wonder, whimsy, and mischief of a teenager’s mind; the spare time of a teenager to do it; and someone who grew up with the coding that most web sites use now to come up with it: someone who, like Ternovskiy, started coding when they were 11. Most interesting isn’t his motivation (“for fun”) or his inspiration behind it (“a certain feeling of what other teenagers would want to see on the Internet”), or even why he does it (“I enjoy what I do. It is like a game for me. I discover new things and solve interesting problems.”), but rather—as someone who knows nothing about coding—the way in which he coded ChatRoulette with speed and economy, and also, the way he’s not raking it on the site: Advertising on Chatroulette is kept to a minimum, because there are a lot of sites full of advertisements, which distract you from what you want to do on those sites. I also love minimalism. That’s why I have put only four links on the bottom as advertisements. And what is interesting, is that these advertisements almost cover all expenses, just those four links on the bottom! He does it because he loves it . Meanwhile, that sound you just heard are hands slapping the foreheads of many a web sales team. That said, does anybody really know what the potential of ChatRoulette actually is, or what it can be past a voyeuristic experiment? Vanity Fair columnist and Newser “entrepreneur” thinks ChatRoulette is for the birds : Chatroulette is a catalogue of real time phalluses. It’s in your face priapicness. It’s jack-off central. It’s really quite astounding. And if a Vanity Fair columnist calls it “jack-off central,” than you know it must be true. Meanwhile, Sam Anderson at New York muses on its potential past “jack-off central” after spending too much time on it (which is besides, arguably, “any”): It felt like I’d experienced the full range the site had to offer: the shock porn, the dance parties, the weirdly aggressive homoerotic banter. Quite frankly, if ChatRoulette teaches us anything, one certain less we know—for the moment—is that kids are doing fun things because they like them, and adults are endlessly fascinated by these things that were created for kids to have after-school fun with. Also, that screengrabbing is the best thing ever, and that while ChatRoulette won’t bring us world peace anytime soon, it will bring humanity priceless moments like this. Via Buzzfeed :

George W. Bush Billboard Asks: Miss Me Yet?

Rumors are swirling that if you drive down I-35 in Minnesota, you’ll see a billboard featuring a smiling George W. Bush accompanied by the question “Miss me yet?” This was initially discredited as a photoshopped hoax, but it’s real. But the dual mysteries surrounding who paid for the ad, and what their motivation was, remain. Are they Obama supporters sarcastically hoping to remind people about George W., or Bush fans sincerely yearning for the “good” days of the past administration? Mary McNamara, general manager at the Minneapolis office of Schubert & Hoey Outdoor Advertising, the company which owns and leases out the billboard, says: “The ad was purchased by a group of small business owners who wish to remain anonymous.” However, “some of the people in the group were Obama supporters.” McNamara added that the message the group hoped to convey was one of “Hope and change, where is it?” She went on to say that she has yet to receive any negative feedback about the ad, which has been up for weeks. Not everyone buys that. Cindy Erickson, the chairwoman of the Democratic Party in Chisago County, where the billboard is located, suspects the ad’s funders are in actuality conservative activists posing as Obama supporters. “I don’t have any idea who did it, but my thought was that they’re Tea Party people,” she said. “Regardless, it’s been the subject of many conversations around here.” Minnesota was a “blue” state in ’08, but Chisago is part of a Republican-leaning string of suburban counties that Obama lost about 55-45 in the presidential election. While it’s subject to some interpretation, there’s little doubt that Obama has been under fire. Has George, however unwittingly, joined Sarah Palin in laying into him? What do you think of the Bush billboard?

Kendra Wilkinson, OK! Weekly Continue to Set Horrible Examples

Shame on you, Kendra Wilkinson. You’re a mother now. It’s time to set a good example. Not a week has gone by in 2010 where Kendra has not been featured on the cover of a supermarket tabloid. She’s not exactly talented. She needs to make money somehow. We get that. But the latest issue of OK! Weekly continues a disturbing trend by magazines across the nation, most notably this pathetic rag: the focus on post-pregnancy weight loss. Even Kourtney Kardashian acknowledges that it’s perfectly acceptable to not return to a size two immediately upon giving birth. One is tired, one is taking care of a newborn, it’s quite alright if one’s figure shows the signs of new motherhood. But is Kendra willing to take a stand against the unhealthy message that women must go on a strict diet as soon as a baby is no longer in their womb? Not if she can get paid for promoting it! Wilkinson says she goes through “45 minutes of hardcore training and weightlifting,” followed by the treadmill until she’s tired. She also does squats and lunges. Hey, it’s easy to find time for this routine when you have no actual job and can pay a nanny to look after your son. Kendra’s goal? To look like Kim Kardashian . “She can be my motivation to try and get the best booty in Hollywood!” she tells the magazine. THG’s goal? For everyone to boycott OK! Weekly . Will you help us make this into a reality?

MGMT’s Congratulations: Fuzz, Dancing And Russian Surfing In 2010

The group returns with a new album this year, but without any single releases. By Kyle Anderson MGMT Photo: Sony/Columbia It’s hard to believe that Oracular Spectacular, the breakout album from Brooklyn psychedelic dance duo MGMT , originally came out way back in 2007, simply because it still remains inescapable today. Andrew Van Wyngarden and Ben Goldwasser have spent the past few years riding the wave of their infectious, fuzzy grooves to platinum success, and the irresistibility of the smash singles “Time to Pretend” and “Kids” has brought them major spots on high-profile festivals, a pair of Grammy nominations and praise from bloggers and soccer moms alike.
