Wong Kar Wai vs. Terrence Malick: Who’s Got the More Inscrutable Trailer?

Like a phoenix rising from the stagnant pre-New Year’s Eve cesspool of news, here comes the teaser for the new Wong Kar Wai martial arts film The Grandmasters , with Tony Leung kicking and punching his way through…what’s that? There’s no kicking or punching in the teaser? Oh. There’s almost no indication of what the film looks like, you say. That seems about right for today. But here at Movieline HQ, this teaser made us wonder: Is this one-minute blast of calligraphy really any less revealing than the unexplained imagery in the much-drooled-over Tree of Life trailer ?

The American and 6 Other Mis-Marketed Movies of 2010

Whether or not you were down for George Clooney’s somber and nearly-silent turn as a hitman looking to retire in The American (out today from Universal Studios Home Entertainment), it’s easy to understand why so many opening-weekend moviegoers felt like they’d been duped. Anton Corbijn’s film is quiet and cold and precise and so subtle that it felt like an arthouse movie. But Focus Features sold The American like it was another action-packed George Clooney shoot-em-up . But selling the sizzle and not the tofu is something that Hollywood has done since the nickelodeon days. And they certainly did it this year. Ahead, the most mis-marketed films of 2010.

(My favorite: A hat rack where Cher hangs all her old parts.) Ahead, I revisit my ten favorite stories of the year, and yes, my video dalliance with Diablo Cody and Megan Fox makes the cut.

3 Underdogs Worth Rooting for in the Oscar Race for Best Original Song

Oscar’s “Best Original Song” category is unusually thrilling; you might not remember the nominated tunes (or even the movies), but you cheer when Melissa Etheridge’s “I Need to Wake Up” defeats three Dreamgirls contributions, and you groan when Phil Collins’s monkey love medley from Tarzan beats Aimee Mann’s “Save Me” from Magnolia . This time, Movieline is offering to help the academy by drawing attention to three underdogs who deserve more recognition than, say, anything from the Burlesque or Country Strong soundtracks.
