Please Stop Giving Racist White Women Adorable Nicknames

I t started out as just another viral video: A white woman named Alison Ettel saw Jordan Rodgers, an African-American girl, selling water near AT&T Park in San Francisco. Rodgers was trying to earn money for a trip to Disneyland. Ettel was caught on camera calling 911 and the video was soon spread across social media. A meme was born . Alison Ettel, CEO of weed dispensary Treatwell Tinctures, calls the police on an 8-year-old girl for selling water. She profits from a drug that put so many people of color behind bars, yet still tries to harm a little black girl. For water. #PermitPatty pic.twitter.com/WJRzfJglhh — Eugene Gu, MD (@eugenegu) June 24, 2018 A few weeks later an Oakland woman called the police on a group of Black people having a cookout. Again, her face was plastered on every social media outlet, photoshopped in different scenarios and even parodied on SNL. She was given the moniker of BBQ Becky . At first, the seemingly weekly moments and memes doubled as mindless comedy combined with ways to shame the white women for their racism. But it’s time to stop it. Because, in the end, these nicknames and memes are only shielding white women from real consequences they should get for putting Black lives in danger. READ MORE: Cornerstone Caroline Investigated For Falsely Accusing Black Child Black people comprise roughly 13 percent of the United States population but make up more than 23 percent of people killed by police. Black men and women have 6.6 to 1 odds of being killed by police while unarmed. Police are more likely to use excessive force on Black people. And so on. So it’s clear that calling the police on a Black person is effectively putting that Black person’s life in danger. Everyone knows this, including the white people who erroneously call police on Black folks. White people who call the police on Black folks don’t just want us removed from their sidewalks or their parks or their cookouts or their neighborhoods. They want us dead. And they know that calling the police on us is going to heighten their chances of those dreams coming to fruition. Take, for instance, the story of Jeremiah Harvey. He was in a New York corner store when his backpack brushed up against a white woman named Teresa Klein. She called the police claiming that the boy groped her. She’s been given the nickname “ Cornerstore Caroline .” How adorable. The problem here is that Harvey calling the police for believing a boy groped her recalls the infamous case of Emmett Till , a boy accused of whistling at a white woman, Carolyn Bryant Donham . She alerted a mob of white men — not that far off from a modern-day police force, depending on whom you ask — who went on to lynch Till. Klein was engaging in a tried and true American tradition of using stereotypes of over-sexualized Black men to aid in the deaths of said Black men. This isn’t an act that should just garner alliterative nicknames and social media memes because that’s letting these perpetrators off the hook. Here’s a question? Without scrolling up, do you even remember Permit Patty’s real name? What about Cornerstone Caroline? Barbecue Becky? Giving them nicknames is providing aliases that cover the names of real women with real racist motivations to commit real harm to real Black people. America has functioned under the premise that white women are innately innocent and harmless in the history of anti-Black violence despite overwhelming historical and present-day evidence to the contrary. Guarding women with nicknames and comedy will surely embarrass them in the short-term, and, in the case of Ettel, she stepped down from her post as a CEO. But do you think she has gone un-hired since? What true recourse has she seen? What true contrition has she been forced to show? Like many others I was disturbed when the news reported #TeresaKlein falsely called the cops on a 9 year old black boy. One of the ways I plan to combat this issue in our community is by introducing Senate Bill S9150 https://t.co/QHatyNGYsm @JeffCMays #CornerstoreCaroline pic.twitter.com/RBZUskS8e0 — Senator Kevin Parker (@SenatorParker) October 13, 2018 There need to be precedents set to make sure these anti-Black violent offenders face more than just a handful of days of embarrassing memes. If there aren’t going to be laws that penalize these people for their calls — something I’m skeptical of, as such a law would be asking police to side with an innocent Black person over a white person, which doesn’t usually garner great outcomes for us — then we have to find ways to hold these white people accountable. So, yes, say their real names as often as possible. Make the world know that anyone who hires them or does business with them is choosing to engage with someone with a clear disregard for Black lives. Whatever you do, leave the cute nicknames for situations that are actually funny, because there’s never any comedy involved when Black boys and girls get police called on them. Amy Winehouse Hologram Tour Is Happening In 2019

Source: photo: WENN Before her unexpected death in 2011 Amy Winehouse seemed well on her way to international superstardom but like many artists before her the addiction to alcohol and substance abuse derailed her career and ended up being the reason for her too early demise. Now her family is looking to keep her essence alive by embarking on a hologram tour in conjunction with BASE Hologram. Rolling Stone is reporting that the singer’s estate has come to an agreement with the entertainment company to kick off a tour next year that will feature “digitally remastered arrangements of [Winehouse’s] classics” while the hologram “will be backed by a live band, singers and theatrical stagecraft.” After Tupac shook up Coachella back in 2012 via digital hologram, there was talk of a Biggie and even Elvis hologram tour but none of those every came to fruition for whatever reasons. But this seems like it may very well be a go and Amy’s father, Mitch told Rolling Stone that this was a “dream for us.” He went on to add  “To see her perform again is something special that really can’t be put into words. Our daughter’s music touched the lives of millions of people and it means everything that her legacy will continue in this innovative and groundbreaking way.” But this won’t just be a tour for the sake of banking off of Amy’s legacy. The hologram tour will also be used to raise money for the Amy Winehouse Foundation which works to stymie young people’s abuse of drugs and alcohol. Sounds kosher to us. No word yet on when the tour will be ready to get on the road but should everything go accordingly we’re all going to be looking at Puff Daddy expecting him to take Biggie’s likeness on the road one last time.

#MuteRKelly: Parents Of The Singer’s Alleged Victim Launch ‘Abuse Hotline’ Against Him

Source: Al Bello / Getty The parents of a young women who believe R. Kelly has brainwashed their daughter and is holding her captive have created a hotline for other women who may have fallen victim to the singer. According to  Mic ,  Tim and Jonjelyn Savage  have been bombarded with calls from nearly 80 women and parents with their own stories of abuse by the Pied Pier after a 2017 Buzzfeed article was published with accusations against the singer. After time, the Savages noticed a disturbing trend: So many of these callers were afraid to go public. So they created a “R. Kelly abuse hotline” last week to create a safe space for people to come forward, speak their truth and to leave a message going into detail about their allegations against the “I Believe I Can Fly” singer. “One reason I feel that he’s been getting away with a lot of the allegations for the last two decades is because people feel he has money and power and they don’t have the resources to fight him,” Mrs. Savage explained. READ MORE:   EXCLUSIVE: Lawyer To Family Whose Daughter Is Allegedly Being Held Captive By R. Kelly Speaks Out About New Song In addition, the Savages hope that this influx of callers will allow for them to build an even stronger case against R. Kelly. “There’s no age limit on being mind-controlled, drugged, brainwashed, there’s no age limit on that,” Mrs. Savage said. “So the more we have more young ladies or even men, or parents that are willing to speak out, the more we think it can help our daughter as well as helping other victims.” As we previously reported , the Savages told Buzzfeed last they haven’t seen their daughter Jocelyn since December 2016 and haven’t spoken to her on the phone since December 2017. Shortly after, Joycelyn told TMZ that her parents’ claims were false and that she willingly stays in a relationship with the singer. As we all know, the Savages claims are not new or rare when it comes to the Grammy winner. For decades R. Kelly has  been accused of predatory behavior , especially among African-American women and girls. He is also facing a lawsuit that claims the 51-year-old knowingly transmitted an STD to a women he began dating when she was 19 and he as been accused of cultivating a “sex cult” abusing multiple women. That, and there was that damning documentary on BBC3,  R Kelly: Sex, Girls and Videotapes,  where former girlfriend Kitty Jones says that Kelly introduced her to a girl whom he had allegedly “trained” since she was 14. “I saw that she was dressed like me, that she was saying the things I’d say and her mannerisms were like mine,” Jones said in the film. “That’s when it clicked in my head that he had been grooming me to become one of his pets. He calls them his pets.” READ MORE:   R. Kelly’s ‘I Admit’ Song Is Unhealed Word Vomit We Just Don’t Want R. Kelly has denied all sexual assault, kidnapping and sex cult accusations. This past summer, he  released a new song  addressing the sexual assault, pedophilia and sex cult allegations that have been circling around him for more than two decades. And while the title of the song, “I Admit” gives off the impression that the Pied Piper has finally come clean about his alleged predatory behavior, it’s quite the opposite. In the 19-minute track, Kelly denies all illegal allegations, going as far as to say that the people accusing him are lying and are only doing so to extort money and ruin his career. He also painted a picture of being a victim of sorts, claiming that he was sexually assaulted as a young child, is basically illiterate and has perhaps battled with drug addiction. Quavo Hints At A Migos & Drake Mixtape [Video]

Source: Directors and actors attend a premiere for “The Carter Effect” at the 42nd Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in Toronto, Canada. Featuring: Drake Where: Toronto, Canada When: 09 Sep 2017 Credit: Euan Cherry/WENN.com Uploaded By Godspeed It looks like we might be getting more Drake and Migos vibes before the year is out. Quavo alluded that a collaborative project might be in the works. As Complex reports the “Stir Fry” rapper quietly dropped a bombshell while making the promotional rounds for his upcoming solo debut album. During a social media themed response segment with  GQ, Huncho was asked on Twitter if the two camps will be working together again. “Quick thought but what if Migos and Drake dropped a collab mixtape after the tour?” To which Quavo responded “You must be a psychic. If that don’t tell you something I don’t know what to tell you.” Drizzy and the trap trio have had a long history together starting in 2013 with the remix to “Versace”; the track that seemingly jump started the group’s career. They followed things up with “Walk It Like I Talk” on  Culture 2 . Most recently the “Aubrey & Three Migos Tour” brought them all together for several sold out shows throughout the country. While no further details are known about the mixtape it is safe to assume that we will have to wait some time before it sees the light of day. On October 12 the Migos front man will release his highly anticipated Quavo Huncho . Additionally the writing is on the wall that Takeoff’s solo LP will follow soon after. You can check the rest of the GQ clip below where he also discusses his high school football career, supplies some very key definitions to Migo’ lingo and confirms their immaculate eating etiquette. The mixtape talk starts at the 25 second mark. Photo: Adriana M. Barraza/WENN.com

Quavo Pays Off $14K Tax Lien, Takeoff Stills Owes $14K

Unbeknownst to many, the state of Georgia hit  Quavo with a $14,000 tax lien. No worries, he paid it off—Takeoff still owes the same amount, though.  Reports The Blast : According to official documents, the Georgia Department of Revenue filed a release of a tax lien against the rapper (real name: Quavious Marshall) that he was hit with in June. The lien accused Quavo of failing to pay up on a state tax bill totaling $14,055.06 he owed from 2016. The lien has been released and it is no longer enforceable, due to the debt being paid in full. His Migos bandmate, Takeoff, was also hit with a lien — the same day as Quavo — over a similar unpaid tax bill totaling $14,348.23. Takeoff’s lien is still enforceable, though. But does this mean that Offset was responsible and paid his taxes? — Photo: WENN.com
