Big 3 Nets’ Evening News Audience Fails to Break 20 Million in Mid-September

They’re out of excuses. Summer’s over. It’s after Labor Day. The kids are back in school. People are back into their routines. The trouble for the Big 3 broadcast networks is that those routines don’t include watching their early-evening newscasts. Beyond that, last week was a pivotal week in Campaign 2010, with key primaries in New York, Delaware, New Hampshire, and several other states. As far as I know, Brian Williams, Diane Sawyer, and Katie Couric were firmly ensconced in their anchor chairs all week long. With all that, the Big 3 Nets’ audience for the weeks was less than 20 million, almost 5% lower than the same week a year ago, when there were no key election races. The Big 3 are not recovering from what was an awful summer. Here are the numbers (source: Media Bistro — Week of Sept. 13, 2010 ; week of Sept. 14, 2010 ): NBC and ABC both took huge hits in the 25-54 demographic groups, while CBS picked up a bit. If they expected their all-O’Donnell-bashing all-the-time strategy to translate into additional evening news viewers, early returns would seem to indicate that it’s not working out too well. NBC Reporter Warns Global Warming Now Endangering the Walrus

It seems like every few years there’s a new mascot for Team Global Warming. First it was the polar bear, then the Arctic fox and now it’s the walrus’s turn. On Monday’s Today show, Lee Cowan traveled to Point Lay, Alaska to report on how shrinking ice sheets are leaving walruses stranded, in between their feedings, adding: “Much like the polar bear, they can’t swim forever.” In fact it didn’t take long for Cowan to bring up the dreaded specter of global warming as he aired a soundbite of a local tribal president worrying: “I always thought the Arctic would be cold, but scientists tell us that there’s global warming going on.” Cowan even used another local resident to suggest that if something wasn’t done soon, that in 10 years “we won’t have any” animals. The following is a full transcript of the segment as it was aired on the September 20 Today show: ANN CURRY: Now to an extraordinary wildlife event taking place in northwest Alaska. Tens of thousands of Pacific walrus have crowded onto a beach near a remote village. And biologists think it is because the sea ice melted early, leaving the animals no other place to rest. NBC’s Lee Cowan is in Point Lay, Alaska with more on this story. Lee, good morning. [On screen headline: “Global Warning, Walruses Coming Ashore In Record Numbers”] LEE COWAN: Good morning, Ann. We’re about 300 miles above the Arctic Circle this morning and this is where the walrus has gathered, some 20,000 of them, at one point, over the course of the summer. And Ann, scientists are saying that this is a gathering that is so large and so unusual that scientists are now worried about the walruses’ safety. It’s the end of summer along the north slope of Alaska and in the tiny Inupiaq village of Point Lay, they wait for the ice to return. The tundra is usually already frozen by now, with snow on the ground and slush ice forming along the Chuckhi Sea. But instead, children are playing in the lagoon, barefoot, innocently oblivious to what it all may mean. LEO FERRARA, TRIBAL PRESIDENT: I always thought the Arctic would be cold but scientists tell us that there’s global warming going on. COWAN: Do you believe them? FERRARA: Yeah I believe them. COWAN: Leo Ferrara, the tribal president here, doesn’t mind that the bone-chilling 80-below winter temperatures are taking their time getting here, but he’s worried about the villages most recent resident, who need the ice to survive. COWAN LOOKING THROUGH BINOCULARS: Oh you can see them in the water. FERRARA: There you go. COWAN: The Pacific walrus, who normally rest on ice sheets floating out in the sea, have instead hauled out by the thousands at Point Lay to nap, unable to find refuge even on a small piece of sea ice. The scientists say most of it, has melted early. MARK SERREZE, NATIONAL SNOW ICE DATA CENTER: What this is telling us is that there is continuing pattern of sea ice loss in the Arctic. We may be looking at summers with no sea ice at all, or little to speak of in 20 or perhaps 30 years. COWAN: In fact a new report this month shows it’s the third lowest Arctic sea level in over 30 years. Walruses need that ice to rest on in between feeding, much like the polar bear, they can’t swim forever. ANTHONY FISCHBACH, U.S. GEOLOGICAL SURVEY: We suspect this is going to cost walruses more to make a living, when they have to commute from a coastal resting spot out to the foraging grounds, than it would cost them simply to roll of the ice and feed directly beneath them. COWAN: But that’s not the only worry. With upwards of 20,000 crammed so tightly together, easily startled mothers can often stampede, crushing newborn calves as they hurtle toward the water to safety. BILL TRACEY, POINT LAY FIRE CHIEF: Anything can spook them from a polar bear, a brown bear, a dog, a man, a boat going by, an airplane going over. COWAN: Bill Tracey is Point Lay’s fire chief. Last year he says, not far away, more than 100 walruses trampled each other to death. So until the ice comes back, strict limits are now in place. This is about as close as we can legally get to the walruses without disturbing them. From this point forward, the only people allowed in are researchers. There’s even a no fly zone over the beach, something residents here are happy to see. SOPHIE HENRY: What we have now, we have to protect what’s there, because maybe in the next 10 years we won’t have any. COWAN: A way after life for this village, a way life for the walrus, both trying to adapt to an Arctic changing faster than many expected. HENRY: The whales, the walrus, the Belugas, you know they, they live with the ice. And if it, if that all is gone, does that mean all the animals are gone too? CURRY: NBC’s Lee Cowan.

SEIU Activist: Local Networks ‘Willing Partners’ in Campaign Against Wis. GOP Gubernatorial Candidate

Are the three news networks actively working to defeat the Republican candidate for Governor in Wisconsin? According to the far-left Service Employees International Union, yes, they most certainly are. SEIU spokesman John-david Morgan – also, incidentally, a former journalist – told a staffer  ( audio embedded below the fold ) for GOP gubernatorial candidate Scott Walker that local media affiliates for all three major networks were “willing partners” in the union’s efforts to defeat Walker. The staffer gave a fake name and recorded the conversation without Morgan’s knowledge. “They’ve really been willing partners in it,” Morgan told the staffer. “They come in with the TV cameras, and [channels] 58, 12 come, and 6 doesn’t always. But, yeah, they’ve been really helpful. They think it’s fun.” Channels 58 and 12 are Milwaukee’s CBS and ABC affiliates, respectively. “It’s not perfect,” Morgan added, but “they get our message across.” Indeed, Morgan apparently felt that some items from these outlets reinforced the SEIU’s anti-Walker campaign. Among the issues the union planned on hammering Walker for, according to Morgan, was a disaster at O’Donnell Park in Milwaukee, where a parking garage collapsed over the summer, killing a 15-year-old boy. Morgan apparently approved of the local CBS station’s coverage of the fallout over the accident. He posted a story from the outlet on his Facebook page, as seen in the screenshot below:   Morgan also mentioned channel 4, the local NBC station, for its coverage of inspections of state facilities, which the SEIU hopes to use as the basis of an attack campaign against Walker. According to a transcript of the exchange, Morgan described the union’s tactics – and the media’s role in it – thusly: Yeah, you know, like, when we did the people’s building inspection, we went around to a bunch of buildings where we know stuff is falling apart. Scott Walker has neglected these buildings, and he keeps putting repairs off because he, you know, won’t fix anything. So, you know, they poked fun at us a little bit for having like a phony report card. It’s like whatever, but then they said, “But the group does have a point – a piece fell off the courthouse in May.” And sure enough, a search through channel 4’s website reveals a story from August 19 on the SEIU’s fake “report card” on the state of public facilities. The piece regurgitates a number of claims from union, and one attack from a county supervisor who joined the SEIU in its sham “inspections.” “I think that people should beware of the dishonest budgeting of Scott Walker,” said Democratic county supervisor Chris Larson, whose party affiliation is not mentioned in the piece. I contacted Morgan via Facebook and asked him to elaborate on his “willing partners” comment. At first, he said that he was only expressing his appreciation for “all the hard work that broadcast journalists did covering our events.” When I asked about the disconnect between that claim and the numerous comments he made in his recorded coversation suggesting more than a simple third-party-observation role on the part of the news media, Morgan refused to comment any further. He instead referred me to the transcript of the exchange, in which he said “my meaning is best reflected.” None of the three networks’ local affiliates returned requests for comment by deadline. The Wisconsin Democratic Party, Walker’s oppoenent’s campaign, and SEIU Local 1 also did not respond to such requests. But the Wisconsin Republican Party – to whom the Walker campaign directed a press inquiry – was happy to offer its views on media coverage of the race in a phone conversation. I asked whether the party thinks the media is in fact aiding the SEIU campaign against Walker. Wisconsin GOP spokesman Andrew Welhouse told me: I think that the only voice that you really need to hear is the SEIU’s. I think that the fact that the said something so blatantly – I mean, it’s their words, not ours. They’re the ones that are saying “these guys are in the tank for us.” I can’t imagine that he would say something like that if he didn’t have anything to back it up – a feeling that they were all going with. Asked whether media bias has been a significant problem in the campaign, Welhouse stated: What people see on TV and what people read in the newspaper goes a long way in determining how they perceive their elected officials as representing them, and it goes a long way in how they perceive new people coming on the scene. People know there’s a difference between paid advertising and what they read in the news and what they see in the media, and if there’s an ongoing perception that the media is biased or stilted one way or the other, that’s a big problem. And for the other side to so blatantly say, “we’ve got these guys in our camp,” that’s not only a problem for one party saying one thing and the other party saying another thing and there being a campaign between two different sides, but that’s a real problem for people who see the news media as an unbiased source of information. Though none of the media outlets in question returned requests for comment, it seems safe to assume that they would deny any official collaboration with the SEIU. But the fact that the media in question were so eager to cover events in a manner friendly to a group as far to the left as the SEIU implies a convergence either of political ideology, if not political objectives. Even if the media are not actively working with Democratic shock troops, they apparently share a sense of what is news – in this case, events damaging to the Republican gubernatorial candidate. The bottom line is Morgan’s admission raises serious ethical concerns beyond political bias. The news media can have a dramatic impact on elections, since they proclaim themselves wholly objective and non-partisan. This revelation may belie that claim – at least in Milwaukee.

Dax Shepard’s How-To-Guide: Getting Banned From a Talk Show

Sometimes showing up for a talk show interview under the influence won’t hurt your career (see: Danny DeVito, Ben Affleck, Bruce Willis, et al. ), but other times — say, when you’re just starting to get steady work on-camera — showing up drunk for a late night segment can get you blacklisted by one of the most powerful P.M. personalities. Just ask Dax Shepard, who learned that lesson the hard way.

Today Co-Hosts Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb Endorse New Bloomberg Smoking Ban

In the fourth hour of Thursday’s Today show NBC’s Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb took a strong stance against the right to smoke, pretty much everywhere, as both endorsed Mayor Mike Bloomberg’s proposed ban that goes several steps further than just restaurants. During the opening chat session of the hour, Kotbe announced: “So some good news in New York City…Mayor Bloomberg is considering banning smoking in all places like parks, beaches and Times Square.” Gifford also praised the move declaring that ” Second-hand smoke is a bigger killer than asbestos or a lot of other things” but later seemed to contradict herself as she proclaimed: “I’m all for personal rights. I’m becoming more and more of a libertarian the older I get.” The following is the full exchange as it was aired on the September 16 Today show: HODA KOTB: So some good news in New York City if you are against people smoking in public. Mayor Bloomberg is considering banning smoking in all places like parks, beaches and Times Square. [On screen headline: “Butt Out, NYC Mayor Proposes Ban On Smoking At Parks, Beaches”] KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: Outside of public buildings, everywhere? Everywhere? All public places? KOTB: That’s, I’m, I have to say I’m kind of for that. GIFFORD: Well remember the outcry when he first banned it in restaurants? Everybody said, “Nobody is gonna, it’s gonna hurt everybody. Nobody’s gonna go to restaurants any more.” KOTB: Right. GIFFORD: Really? People get hungry. KOTB: Yeah. They still go. GIFFORD: But, but they smoke outside. You know it’s so funny that, that would be announced today. Because yesterday I left our building and some of our best friends, around here, do smoke. And they’ve been battling with it! KOTB: Sure. GIFFORD: They would really love to be able to quit but they can’t so far. KOTB: Yeah. GIFFORD: As I walked out, I mean it was into, and it was a beautiful day yesterday- KOTB: Gorgeous. GIFFORD: -into this, this like, this- KOTB: Cloud. GIFFORD: More than that. Yeah, like a heavy duty- KOTB: Cloud. GIFFORD: And, and, and my, my hair stunk the whole way home. KOTB: Yeah, yeah. GIFFORD: I was gasping for breath because I’m, you know- KOTB: Asthmatic. GIFFORD: -I’m highly allergic to it. So it’s, it’s one thing to do it to yourself, and I’m sorry anybody is addicted because it’s, a terrible, terrible addiction. But second-hand smoke is a bigger killer than asbestos or a lot of other things as well. KOTB: Right and I do, there are some states that do not ban it in restaurants. I think there are 26 that do, around the country. So a lot of them still don’t. GIFFORD: Yeah. KOTB: I think a lot of people are starting to get on the bandwagon. But there is nothing worse than sitting on the beach, like enjoying the- GIFFORD: The fresh air! KOTB: And then there comes this waft of smoke and literally, and you can’t really move away. Because you move and the wind changes or you go somewhere, like you’re gonna be in it, no matter what. GIFFORD: Yeah. KOTB: But I’ll bet you this is gonna have, there will be a lot of outcry over this. GIFFORD: There will be outcry, there will be. Maybe it’ll help some people give it up better. You know they won’t have any option- KOTB: Right. GIFFORD: But the, the other thing is you know, the thing is about a personal right. I’m all for personal rights. I’m becoming more and more of a libertarian the older I get. The more they take away our rights, the more I’m saying, excuse me, wait a minute! But I don’t think any right that we have, should infringe on the rights of other people. KOTB: Right. GIFFORD: And that’s the basic problem with the, with the smoking. KOTB: I agree with that. I agree with that. GIFFORD: Okay.

Kudlow Calls Tea Parties Bullish for Economy: ‘Don’t Believe the Mainstream Media’

The Media Research Center isn’t the only ones out there telling folks to be wary of the media and its coverage of the Tea Party movement.  On his Sept. 15 broadcast , Larry Kudlow, host of CNBC’s “The Kudlow Report,” hit that point. Referring to “Tea Party” primary win in Delaware, New York and New Hampshire, Kudlow explained that this shift to the right was a net-positive for the economy. “Tonight, free-market capitalism on the comeback trail,” Kudlow said. “That is one of the messages of the Tea Party power. We saw a lot of that power last night in the primaries. I tell you what folks, that Tea Party power, that free-market capitalist power is so totally bullish for the stock market.” Kudlow advised his viewers to be skeptical of the media, which has covered the Tea Party movement and their candidates very critically, even sometimes disparagingly. He cited the “Contract FROM America,” a document put forth by various conservative organizations calling on elected leaders and political candidates to stand on a number of conservative principles. ” Don’t believe the mainstream media ,” he continued. “Don’t believe the pundits in either the Republican Party or the Democratic Party. They don’t understand Tea Parties. I do. We’ve had them on this show time and time again as guests, including, including their referendum, the ‘Contract FROM America.'”  The CNBC host has his own 12-step program for the economy.  He maintains that, if successful, the limitations the Tea Party philosophy would put on government are the best way to get back to an economy rooted in free-market principles. “They are talking free markets – lower spending, lower taxing, lower regulations, even constitutional limits to government, and you heard me talk about this last week in my free market 12-step plan for prosperity,” Kudlow said. “The rise of the Tea Party people – they are going to win the vast majority of those Senate races and we are going it see a sea change in American policies back to freedom and entrepreneurship, and that is bullish.”

TV Networks Smear Christine O’Donnell; Bozell Demands Media Tell the Truth! About Tea Party Victories

Dubbed as “ultra right wing extremist” and “crazy,” Republican candidate Christine O’Donnell and her Tea Party supporters have been smeared by every major broadcast and cable network since she won the Delaware primary against GOP establishment candidate on Tuesday night. NewsBusters publisher and Media Research Center President Brent Bozell reacts : This is mudsliging at its ugliest. Pure character assassination. These networks have never treated a viable Democratic candidate with this level of contempt.  How dare they lecture anyone on manners or decency ever again. The MRC demands the media Tell The Truth! about the Tea Party, its momentum and the revolution of people whose votes are proving America is fed up with Washington. Here are just some of the latest smears by the liberal media: NBC’s KELLY O’DONNELL (Sept. 15 “Today”): “Democratic officials are gleeful and called her an ultra right wing extremist.” ABC’s GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS (Sept. 15 “Good Morning America”) to Republican Senate nominee Christine O’Donnell: “We saw that the Republican Party chairman in Jon Karl’s piece there, he went on to say, that you’re ‘not a viable candidate.’ That you ‘cannot be elected dog catcher in Delaware.’ He went on to say that you’re either a liar or mentally unhinged.” MSNBC’s MIKE BARNICLE (Sept. 16 “Morning Joe”): “The larger problem she has, I would submit, is this: that ‘different’ this year, for a candidate, is good. People are looking for ‘different’ this year. ‘Crazy’ is not good. CNN’s JOY BEHAR (Sept. 15 “Joy Behar Show”): “She needs to watch some porn and get some tips, is what she needs.” CBS’s NANCY CORDES (Sept. 15 “Early Show”): “The chair of her own state party called O’Donnell, ‘a liar who could not be elected dog catcher,’ and yet, the tea party conservative easily defeated the well-known Mike Castle, 53 to 47%. O’Donnell, a former marketing consultant with a checkered financial record, was a dark horse until two weeks ago…” Be sure to click here to learn how you can do your part to Demand the Liberal Media Tell the Truth!
