Heroes Finally Canceled

It’s the end of an (initially exciting, then terribly frustrating) era. NBC has decided to completely cut the cord on Heroes — that’s right, no reduced episode order, no miniseries, no wrap-up movie, no nothing. It was quick and brutal, and unlike the deaths on the show itself , this one’s going to stick. [ THR ]

Mercy, Trauma Canceled

Veronica Callahan’s defibrillators have been shut down. NBC’ s first-season drama Mercy , like its extreme counterpart Trauma , has been canceled . I’m unsurprised with both decisions but only disappointed with Mercy . Taylor Schilling was irreverent but sincere in the lead role, Jaime Lee Kirchner won me over as Nurse Sonia, and Michelle Trachtenberg seemed poised for a full mainstream takeover in her first big network role. And to think how excited this cast was when they found out they were picked up for a back nine — at a strip club . [ THR ]

The 9 Best Saturday Night Live Sketches This Season

Like all things in life, Saturday Night Live sketches are subjective. Even so, most viewers would agree that the show’s 35th season has gone from eh (Taylor Swift and January Jones , anyone?) to actually good, thanks to some of the strongest comediennes in the business — a shame, really, since the season ends tomorrow. Still, before Alec Baldwin closes down Studio 8H, let’s remember the highlights that Lorne Michaels gave us this year.

How Much More Money Can NBC Make Off of Betty White?

This morning, NBC announced that it plans on taking advantage of the same social networking tool that swept Betty White into Studio 8H and helped rally over 12 million people into actually watching Saturday Night Live this weekend. The network’s Facebook-compatible program, Fan It, will reward NBC viewers for talking online to their friends about NBC shows with NBC merchandise. Interested, I clicked over to NBC’ s web store just to see if there was any swag that could possibly sway me into enlisting in NBC’ s incestuous PR machine. And there it was, right next to the Biggest Loser Bath Scale ($40) and the Heroes Helix Symbol Pendant Necklace ($15): proof that NBC is still exploiting Betty White.

5 Ways Heroes Could Go Out with a Bang

It’s become a yearly tradition at NBC : Heroes gets a last-minute renewal, the creators apologize and promise that the new season will be better than the last, viewers realize it isn’t, and ratings continue to fall. This time, however, NBC may have run out of patience. Vulture reports that the network likes its new pilots so much that it may cancel Heroes outright, or at least bring it back in a severely truncated form. In case the show does get a reprieve, here are 5 things the writers could do to make it worthwhile.

NBC Unveils New Business Plan: Throw Money at The Problem

“We’re going to have to pay” — so said NBC Universal television entertainment chairman Jeff Gaspin to CEO Jeff Zucker upon his arrival to the sinking ship of a network last summer. Gaspin’s prescription for what has ailed NBC since the days of Ben Silverman — as outlined by Bill Carter in today’s New York Times — is simple: Spend money to make money. So how do they plan to do it?

Conan O’Brien Denies That His Tonight Show Lost Money, Says He Is Still Angry

CBS has been throwing buckets of tasty Conan O’B rien quotes overboard this week, hoping to bait a younger 60 Minutes audience and bring its median age down to 50. Yesterday, the network cleverly released a Jay-bashing soundbite from this Sunday’s interview. And today’s delicious excerpt slices through the very argument NBC used to boot him from his time slot.
