‘It ain’t just a whole city of gang-banging,’ the gangsta rap pioneer tells MTV News of burgeoning L.A. hip-hop scene. By Alvin Blanco, with reporting by Ade Mangum Ice Cube Photo: MTV News Ice Cube is an accomplished actor and director who regularly brings cash to the box office via family-friendly fair like “Are We There Yet?” and comedies like the “Friday” series. The Hollywood savvy Cube may be years removed from his ascent as a gangsta rap pioneer with N.W.A and as a soloist with albums like AmeriKKKa’s Most Wanted, but he’s still a menace on the mic, releasing his ninth solo album, I Am the West, last year. But when we asked about the chances of a new generation of L.A. rappers breaking through like he did in the late 1980s and early ’90s as we gear up for MTV News’ New West Week , Cube said he thought a lack of airplay was a potential obstacle — but one that is being overcome. “I’m not really happy with radio out in L.A.,” Ice Cube told MTV News recently. “I think they turned their back on the hip-hop scene out there. Not stations like KDAY, they still play the hits. But some stations that got a little more wattage, they’re not bumping the hip-hop like they’re supposed to. “I think if you really focus too much on radio, you’ll be lost as an artist anyway,” he continued. “I think radio is very deceptive. It’s kind of fool’s gold ’cause you always chasing your last radio hit instead of just going and doing hip-hop like you supposed to, you worrying about spins, stuff like that. To me, radio has messed up a lot of artists.” While some of the MCs set to be featured during our New West Week — Nipsey Hussle, Pac Div, Odd Future — have turned to the Internet when radio and other traditional outlets weren’t as welcoming, Cube called it a double-edged sword since file-sharing has affected the music business’ bottom line. And although Cube admitted he isn’t up on too many of the up-and-comers primed to re-establish L.A. as a hip-hop superpower (apart from his sons OMG and Doughboy), he’s proud of the movement’s variety. “I think people just got caught in a trick bag. L.A. has always been full of all kind of different talent, different styles,” Cube said. “It ain’t just a whole city of gang-banging. The Black Eyed Peas is a great example of how creative that region is, so I’m happy that it ain’t all just one flavor now. That a lot of different flavors are getting out there. Leave the gangsta sh– to me and everybody else can do whatever they do.” The multitalented rapper has been cast in the upcoming “21 Jump Street” film adaptation. And although executive-producing his TBS sitcom “Are We There Yet?” keeps him busy, Cube currently has his sights set on bringing the N.W.A story to theaters. “We’re in the process of writing the script,” Cube said. “Hopefully, everything will come out perfect. To me, it’s an interesting story because the neighborhood we came from created N.W.A. And N.W.A also impacted the neighborhood we came from. It’s an interesting movie that needs to be told.” Starting Monday, stick with us as MTV News turns the spotlight on the New West, the next wave of hip-hop acts helping to restore faith in the L.A. rap scene. From groups like Odd Future to rising MCs like Dom Kennedy, we’ll bring you up close and personal to these artists as they carve their own lanes in the post-gangsta rap era. Well, now we’ve seen everything. Charlie Sheen was photographed by X17 today, and he wasn’t alone: the actor was spotted getting close and cozy with someone who actually does not make her living in the adult film world. At least we assume that’s the case. When a photographer asked Sheen for the name of the mystery woman on the other end of a kiss, seen here , he replied: “None of your f-ing business.” The actor was back at work today, shooting a scene around 10 a.m. at Westlake Village. He was on location for about four hours and, according to a paparazzi member, “seemed rested and happy.” That’s nice to hear. Perhaps Sheen is excited because his kids may soon be moving to his neighborhood.
Teen heartthrob Justin Bieber is teaming up with an unlikely co-star for his Super Bowl Sunday ad debut: None other than the Prince of Darkness Ozzy Osbourne . Though it was only a few months ago when Ozzy admitted that he has absolutely no idea who Justin is, the musicians co-star in Best Buy’s first Super Bowl ad as the Pittsburgh Steelers take on the Green Bay Packers in next month’s NFL Championship Game. The electronics giant is trying to appeal to both younger and mature consumers and reportedly forked over somewhere in the neighborhood of $1 million to snag the rock great and the beloved pop crooner. “ Justin Bieber is the biggest star out there, but that’s not why he’s in the spot,” Best Buy’s Marketing Chief Drew Panayiotou explained to USA TODAY Wednesday. “He symbolically represents something important to the brand message. Very rarely do you get a big brand looking to evolve into something else. We want to get this brand to a different place.” Details of Ozzy and Justin’s 30-second ad have not been released, but it was filmed earlier this month at Universal Studios in Hollywood and is expected to premiere during the third quarter of the Feb. 6 game. We hear Best Buy has also tapped The Biebs to appear in even more ads and Facebook updates for the retailer throughout the remainder of 2011. Tags: Justin Bieber , Ozzy Osbourne

Fareed Zakaria, who occasionally throws fairly well-disguised bombs from his perches at CNN and Time in a manner so serene many fail to notice– is taking on his cable news stylistic opposite, Glenn Beck– or at the very least, his math skills. In his trademark soothing tones, Zakaria gave Beck a math lesson on those 10%, or 157 million, “Muslim terrorists” Beck claimed were plotting to attack America– namely, that that figure is “1000% wrong.” Zakaria opens up his segment, aptly titled “What in the world?,” by simply following through on the 10% math to figure out just how many people 10% of the international Muslim community would be. Zakaria’s lesson even included a virtual chalkboard, just to make sure Beck got the message, one must assume. He correctly points out would be somewhere in the neighborhood of 157,000,000 Muslim terrorists, and notes Beck’s laments of “why, oh why wasn’t this receiving any media coverage?” Zakaria’s answer? “Well, let me suggest one reason: it is total nonsense– a figure made up by Glenn Beck with absolutely no basis in fact.” He also uses U.S. State Department figures to negate Beck’s, which claim there were 11,000 total terrorist attacks around the world in 2009, including every act of terror in Iraq and Afghanistan, and testimony from terror expert Peter Bergen, who emailed Zakaria to tell him Beck’s figures were “1000% wrong.” It doesn’t get much better for Beck during Zakaria’s semi-out of character deconstructing of his argument. Team Beck, meanwhile, has already put together a comprehensive retort to Zakaria, with data showing, among other things, that support for Osama Bin Laden “ranges from 4% in Azerbaijan to 56% in the Palestinian territories.” added by: TimALoftis

I’ve got to hand it to Kristin Cavallari , at least she knows that she’s got cameras watching her most of the day and doesn’t walk around in her dumpy period pants or anything like that. Here she is all dressed up in high heel boots and everything while she takes out the trash. Amazing. The ladies in my neighborhood never look this good taking out the garbage, sure I see nipples, but they’re the size of silver dollar pancakes and they sag down around the waist area. Sick!
