As a typical Facebook user knows, out of our (on average) several hundred “friends,” often only a handful are “real” friends regularly seen face-to-face. Mikel McLaughlin has set out to change that. The 35-year-old set out in a red Volkswagen Beetle on a journey to spend time with each of his 400-plus Facebook friends … some for the first time ever. McLaughlin is documenting the social-media-meets-real-world adventure on his website We’re Friends, Right? He posts photos of his friends like this one: McLaughlin tells People : “I recognized that I had many Facebook friends with which I had little-to-no actual relationship. I wanted to change that, or at least see if it was possible to do so.” “I feel that having a closer relationship with a person helps me to be better. It’s easy to belittle, berate and dismiss somebody with which you have no relationship.” “But when you spend time at their dinner table, play games with their kids, and hear about their lives, it’s a little bit more difficult to be unkind and uncaring toward them.” So far, he has made it through roughly a third of his Facebook list of 400-plus, with only 25 percent being folks he already considered real-life friends. After each meetup, McLaughlin writes a short summary of the day with his “friend” outside the Web, keeping their names private and using only initials. Ranging from awkward to adorable, many of these encounters consist of simply sharing a meal and a conversation. McLaughlin says it’s been worthwhile: “Just about every time I meet with a Facebook friend, my interaction with them is my new most memorable visit, at least until I meet up with the next Facebook friend.” McLaughlin has no set timeline for his experiment, explaining that he is more focused on the quality of the visits, not the quantity or speed involved. Back home in Minnesota for now, he plans to spend time getting together with local Facebook friends before hitting the road once more. We wish him luck. Justin Bieber has pulled a Willow Smith. During the same week in which Smith created quite the online stir by lying in bed with a shirtless 20-year-old actor named Moises Arias , Bieber has posed on Instagram with Madison Beer. She’s a an aspiring singer. She is showing some major cleavage in a revealing tanktop. Oh… and she’s 15 years old. Beer rose to fame when Bieber Tweeted a link to her video for ” At Last ” in 2012 and was later signed to signed to Island Def Jam. She plans to release an album later this year and was spotted a short while back in the studio with Bieber and Selena Gomez. But she was far more clothed back then. Still, despite the photographic evidence above, we doubt Justin is actually dating Beer. Instead, he’s been romantically linked of late to a model named Yovanna Ventura . They hung out a lot last week and Justin was rarely wearing a shirt during their time in Las Vegas and Venice Beach. Justin Bieber Instagram Photos 1. Darn you, In Touch Weekly. You’re forcing us to take the side of Kim Kardashian. Earlier this week, the tabloid ran a cover story that claimed Kim and Kanye West were planning the ” Wedding From Hell ” because Kris Jenner keeps getting drunk and French Montana may show up as a guest. Typical tabloid fodder, right? Except the magazine also published a “photo recreation” of a woman trying to fit into a wedding dress and ran it alongside a picture of Kim crying. The obvious implication? That is Kim failing to fit into her gown! OH NO! In response to what she describes as a “super lame” gimmick, Kardashian has taken to her blog and brought attention to the pathetic headline grab. “It’s pretty unbelievable what people will do to sell a magazine… this picture says in really small print that it’s a “Photo Recreation.” It’s not a real photo of me, but they’re implying that it is,” Kim writes. Kim Kardashian: Wedding Dress, Butt Photos Are FAKE! Is there an irony in any member of the Kardashian family calling someone else out for desperately trying to garner some attention? Of course. But still… this is super lame of In Touch Weekly. As lame as Kim Kardashian first realizing racism is an issue now and trying to garner points for blogging about it? No. But pretty darn lame nonetheless. 44 Krazy Kardashian Tabloid Kover Klaims 1. Kim Kardashian Butt Problems Oh no! Kim Kardashian’s butt won’t stop growing! What will the reality star do?
Not everyone is excited about the On the Run tour . During a panel discussion about “liberating the black female body” at the New School in New York City this week, famous literary scholar bell hooks (real name: Gloria Jean Watkins) made her feelings about Beyonce very clear. In response to a fellow panelist saying Beyonce served as an inspiration due to “owning her body and claiming that space,” hooks offered up a contrasting viewpoint. “I see a part of Beyonce that is, in fact, anti-feminist – that is a terrorist, especially in terms of the impact on young girls,” the Ain’t I a Woman? author said. “I actually feel like the major assault on feminism in our society has come from visual media and from television and videos.” Bill O’Reilly used different language recently, but made similar points regarding Beyonce. The Fox News host believes Beyonce is part of the teenage pregnancy problem and that she’s a terrible role model for young women due to her lewd music videos and racy song lyrics. Beyonce, of course, covers the Time 100 cover and is considered one of the world’s most influential people by that publication. But hooks wonders if the fascination with Beyonce doesn’t boil down to one word: MONEY. She asks: “Would we be at all interested in Beyonce if she wasn’t so rich? Because I don’t think you can separate her class, power, and the wealth from people’s fascination with her, that here is a young black woman who is so incredibly wealthy.” The self-proclaimed feminist them concludes: “Let’s say if Beyonce was a homeless woman who looked the same way, or a poor, down-and-out woman who looked the same way – would people be enchanted by her? Or is it the combination of all of those things that are at the heart of imperialist, white supremacist, capitalist patriarchy?” Man. Jenelle Evans has upped the selfie ante again with photo of her son, Kaiser Griffith, from his most recent 4D sonogram. That’s right, a selfie before he’s even born. You can clearly see little Kaiser’s face. How cute … right? A controversial student ad campaign supporting public breastfeeding legislation in Texas is causing a stir online this week, and it’s not hard to see why. The campaign, called “When Nurture Calls,” and its provocative images of women nursing babies in public toilet stalls make its point, and then some. “Private dining. Would you eat here?” asks the text of one poster. Others ask, “Bon appétit. Would you eat here?” and “Table for two. Would you eat here?” The much-talked-about advertisements are the work of University of North Texas graphic-art majors Johnathan Wenske and Kris Haro, both juniors. They decided to take on the polarizing issue of public breastfeeding for an assignment that required students to design a campaign for a social issue or product. The viral images generated wide support, but also backlash. Some critics have labeled public nursing “trashy” and criticized women for bearing “sex objects.” Some comments personally attacked photo model Monica Young (who posed with her baby) for being everything from indecent to too young to be a mom. That prompted her to post a response: “I get more sexual comments than anything. So yeah, it’d be pretty great not to have any nasty comments made while I’m feeding my child, with or without a cover.” “Whether I was a too young or not, what does it matter what age I am? A Teen Mom can breastfeed, too. I’m 21, so yeah I’m pretty young,” she adds. “Younger mothers are less likely to breastfeed. So hopefully it will encourage younger mothers to breastfeed, breastfeed in public and to not be ashamed to do it.” Breastfeeding on Instagram Pictures 1. Teresa Palmer Breastfeeding Teresa Palmer getting feasted on by her little guy. Breastfeeding at its most beautiful and touching. Wenske and Haro, both 20, say they chose the topic while coming across the story of a woman harassed in a Texas Target for breastfeeding in 2011. They were also inspired by learning about a state bill which seeks to strengthen the state’s existing public-breastfeeding law by bringing in an enforcement statute. It would have essentially protected moms who nurse in public from being stopped or harassed. The bill controversially died in last year’s legislative session. Public breastfeeding laws exist in most states, but with the exception of a few, including Connecticut, Vermont, and New Jersey, they have no enforcement provisions. This means various authorities are not accountable for their actions against breastfeeding moms, which can make all the difference in many situations. People divided on the issue tend to spar from opposite ends of the spectrum, which supporters believing that nursing is natural and should be welcome anywhere. Certain critics, meanwhile, are steadfast that because there is an exposed breast involved, nursing is a crude action best relegated to private spaces. What do you think?
