Rabid Adam Lambert Fans Line Up 24 Hours Before New York Show

For Lambert, ‘I’d sleep on the sidewalk again,’ one fan says. By Jim Cantiello Adam Lambert Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Getty Images NEW YORK — Scorching temperatures and puzzled looks from passersby could not keep Adam Lambert fans from lining up outside New York’s Nokia Theatre a full 24 hours in advance of his Glam Nation Tour stop. For Eileen Monahan, spending the night sleeping on a “disgusting” Times Square sidewalk in front of the venue was the only way to guarantee she had the best spot inside the general-admission concert. “I want to be up front,” insisted Monahan, before admitting, “[For Adam], I’d sleep here again.” While Monahan only trekked from the Bronx, many traveled thousands of miles to see their favorite artist rock New York City. Fans from Denmark, Venezuela, England, Japan and Singapore mingled with Georgia peaches, Connecticut natives and Californians, making Adam’s Glam Nation a truly international affair. Even Peru had a message for Adam, via superfan Lilli Becker. “Peru represent! We love you, baby! I have a llama for you,” exclaimed Becker, just in case Adam ever wants a ride over the Andes. Perhaps the most exotic fans on the Lambert line were the dudes. Brooklyn native Chris Leavitt fessed up that his lady was the one to convert him into a Glamily member initially, but now he’s excited to “glam out” with the best of them. (His homemade jeans — complete with hand-drawn dragon and space rocks — certainly spoke volumes.) Elsewhere, 17-year old Brooklyn boy Billy Tropea was stoked to make Adam Lambert’s Glam Nation his first concert experience ever. “His hair is friggin’ awesome. I really want his hair,” he said. “I’m very jealous.” Some of Adam’s more seasoned followers insist they haven’t been this gung-ho about a musician since the days of Beatlemania. “I was still stalking Paul McCartney for awhile. I was on his website all the time, but now … sorry, Paul. Adam’s taken your place,” said Claudia Cohill. Armed with bags of snacks, bottles of water, and enough homemade signs to keep office supply stores in business through 2020, fans passed the time by taking bathroom breaks at a nearby McDonalds and dishing about their favorite glamtastic performances (his sultry six-minute acoustic take on “Whole Lotta Love,” which he debuted on tour, seems to be #1 for most). As the mass of Lambert lovers stretched around the block toward West 45th street, fans promised each other there would be no shoving once the doors opened at 7 p.m. “We made friends with people [in line]. We like being fair. No cutting,” promised 20-year-old Melanie Pellegrino. But if any latecomers try to sneak their way up front, the early birds are ready to throw some ‘bows. “I’m willing to cut a bitch!” one joked. Lambert’s tour moves on to Connecticut and New Jersey after his sold-out shows in New York. Related Artists Adam Lambert

Taylor Swift Talks Nashville Flood Benefit With Miley Cyrus

‘Nashville is really being rebuilt, and everybody’s been so wonderful,’ Swift tells MTV News. By Jocelyn Vena Taylor Swift Photo: MTV News On Tuesday night (June 22), Taylor Swift will be one of the many Nashville superstars on hand for Nashville Rising: A Benefit Concert for Flood Recovery . The singer, who lives in the area, will join the night’s hosts, Tim McGraw and Faith Hill , as they raise money to help the area devastated by floods earlier this spring. Swift said she and her band weren’t immune to the destruction. “The flood definitely affected all of Nashville. You know, for me, the fact that there were members of my band that lost their homes really affected me, because those are my friends,” she told MTV News. “Those are the people I call up as soon as we get home. The fact that it affected my band, that’s the most directly it affected me.” While some of her bandmates have struggled to get their feet back on the ground, Swift said, “Thankfully, my home wasn’t damaged, but seeing people that I’ve known for years trying to figure out where they’re going to stay, it was really painful to watch. Nashville is really being rebuilt, and everybody’s been so wonderful.” Swift, who donated $500,000 to help the area back in May, will be joined by fellow teen queen Miley Cyrus , who had her big Can’t Be Tamed coming-out party Monday night, as well as country stars like Carrie Underwood, Brooks & Dunn, LeAnn Rimes, Miranda Lambert and Martina McBride. The show is set to take place at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena. Funds will go to the Community Foundation, which provides philanthropic services in Middle Tennessee. Share your well-wishes for the victims of the Nashville flood in the comments, and tell us how you’ve helped. Related Artists Taylor Swift Miley Cyrus

Dead Prez ‘Go In’ On New Gangsta Grillz Tape, DJ Drama Says

‘It’s some heat on there, man,’ Dram tells Mixtape Daily of Revolutionary but Gangsta Grillz. By Shaheem Reid Dead Prez i> Revolutionary but Gangsta Grillz cover Photo: Gangsta Grillz Don’t Sleep: Necessary Notables Headliners : Dead Prez and DJ Drama Mixtape : Revolutionary but Gangsta Grillz Essential Info : The red, black and green forever! M-1 and Stic.Man of Dead Prez are celebrating the 10-year anniversary of their classic debut, Let’s Get Free, with a new mixtape in conjunction with DJ Drama. The street CD — which came out Tuesday (June 22) — also gives a nod to another classic of theirs, 2004’s Revolutionary but Gangsta. “The Dead Prez tape is called Revolutionary but Gangsta Grillz, ” Drama said Saturday in Atlanta, backstage at Birthday Bash 15. “I jumped on it. I remember when Dead Prez first came out. I did an interview with them, [during the] old ‘Soul in the Hole,’ Loud Records day. It’s a way for me to get in and do projects that people might not expect, but it’s still quality music. I take my brand where I want to. Dead Prez is definitely deserving of a Gangsta Grillz. It’s a good balance. “The guys go in on a lot of records,” Drama added. “The hits as well as some obscure joints. They had to go in on ‘Over.’ Drake borrowed the style; they took it right back. They did their thing. They went in on Gucci’s ‘Wasted.’ You’ll be surprised about that. They went in on a couple of instrumentals. It’s some heat on there, man.” Of course, the Drake track Dram refers to is the song “Far From Ova,” which is already on the Net. Last month, for Mother’s Day, Prez also released “The Beauty Within,” which uses the beat and reworks the hook from B.o.B’s “Nothin’ on You.” Other Heat This Week

The Roots Are At ‘Crossroads’ On How I Got Over, Says ?uestlove

‘You really don’t hear any hip-hoppers dare use the word ‘midlife crisis,’ the drummer tells MTV News. By Mawuse Ziegbe, with reporting by Steven Roberts ?uestlove Photo: MTV News The Roots’ long hip-hop career is rivaled by only a few acts. With the release of their 11th studio album, How I Got Over, however, the Philly collective shows it can still push boundaries, exploring some fairly un-hip-hop themes. “The whole premise of How I Got Over is basically … a coming-of-age record,” ?uestlove told MTV News last week of their latest effort, which came out Tuesday (June 22). The Roots drummer added that the band wanted to switch things up and touch on some thought-provoking themes, a practice he said is more typical of rock than hip-hop. “There hasn’t been a real precedent of anyone being at the crossroads [in hip-hop]. I hear [it] a lot in rock records … where it’s sort of like, ‘I’m at a point in my life where I don’t know what to do and things are happening around me.’ ” The Grammy-winning group known for keeping a tireless touring schedule has more recently eased up on the concert dates, putting down roots as the house band for NBC’s “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon.” The band has no doubt arrived at an enviable level of success for an act that dropped its first effort back in ’93. Still, ?uest explained that the group wanted to get candid on How I Got Over about the issues confronting them at this stage in the game. “You really don’t hear any hip-hoppers talking about some sort of … existential existence of God or even dare use the word ‘midlife crisis’ in any of their verses. So we wanted to make a completely honest record.” But How I Got Over isn’t all existential musings, ?uestlove insisted. The drummer points to tracks like the upbeat “The Fire,” which features soul singer John Legend, who also happens to be working on a collaborative album with the legendary Roots crew. “As far as ‘The Fire’ is concerned, we wanted to balance the record out also, with a sign of hope, a ray of hope,” ?uest said. ” ‘The Fire’ is … almost an anthem, if you will. It’s like a hang-on-in-there, if you will, for us.” Are you glad to hear the Roots will touch on some more complex subjects on their next album? Tell us in the comments!

Miley Cyrus’ MTV Live-Stream Show: The Good Girl Grows Up

During six-song set in L.A., singer speaks her mind and performs ‘Who Owns My Heart’ for the first time. By James Montgomery Miley Cyrus performs at the House of Blues in Los Angeles on Monday Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Getty Images Her new album is available now. She has a brash new attitude to go along with it. And both of those things were on display Monday night (June 21), as Miley Cyrus took to the House of Blues in Los Angeles for a live-streaming concert called, appropriately enough, “Miley Cyrus: Live in L.A.” Her six-song set — streamed on MTV.com — showcased songs from her just-released Can’t Be Tamed and gave the 17-year-old Cyrus a chance to get a bit rebellious, speaking her mind on a host of topics (including abusive relationships and gay rights), prowling the stage with purpose and even working a profanity or two into the mix. She kicked things off with the title track from Tamed, a strutting, steamy thing that saw her spitting lyrics, tossing her hair, popping her hips and even re-enacting the faux kiss she shared with a female dancer earlier this month on “Britain’s Got Talent” (though, perhaps in the spirit of equal opportunity, she also shared a fake smooch with a male dancer). But it wasn’t all sass. At song’s end, Cyrus showed off her pipes a bit too, extending a “knoooooow” to glorious lengths. That was followed by another Tamed track, “Who Owns My Heart” (which Cyrus introduced by telling the rapt audience that it was the first time she’d ever performed the track live), which galloped along on a shuffling beat and was given added punch thanks to the addition of a live band. There was some heavy panting from Cyrus and a big-time chorus — “Who owns my heart/ Is it love, or is it art?” — that had the crowd shouting along. Loudly. She changed things up a bit with “Liberty Walk,” a song she co-wrote and dedicated to “women who are stuck in abusive relationships … to empower them.” The song — which features a stomping beat and even a bit of rapping from MC — also gave her the chance to slip a couple of “sh–s” by the censors too … much to the delight of the audience. Up next was her cover of Poison’s “Every Rose Has Its Thorn,” which featured some genuinely windswept guitar work, but not Poison main man Bret Michaels (the two performed the tune together last week on “Good Morning America” ) though she did dedicate the song to him and urged the audience to “pray” for his continued health (she also said the song was her mom’s favorite). “Rose” was followed by the anthemic “Robot,” which saw the reappearance of her backup dancers, and then the MTV.com live stream ended with “Heart Beats for Love,” a power-packed ballad that Cyrus introduced by saying that she wrote it “mostly for my gay fans,” adding that she abhorred the fact that, “We have people on this earth who hate someone for loving another.” She then launched herself into the song, eyes closed, making a pair of peace signs with her hands, and by the time the tune had reached its crescendo, everyone in the audience was doing the same, showing (much like everything else on this night) not just the power and confidence of Cyrus’ new songs, but the sway she holds over her fans too. Sway she’s apparently decided to use for good. And, really, that speaks a lot louder than some fake girl-on-girl action any day of the week. What did you think of Miley’s six-song set? Jimmy Kimmel Goes DIY After Power Outage

You didn’t see any clips from Jimmy Kimmel Live in Late Night Highlights because a power outage shut down the control room, broadcast transmission center and tape operations area just one hour before the show was scheduled to tape. That was bad news for guest Seth Rogen — who was set to premiere the trailer for The Green Hornet — but good news for Steve Jobs, since Kimmel decided to tape the entire broadcast on his Macbook Pro webcam. And it worked! The fruit of Kimmel’s labor will air tonight at his regularly scheduled time. [ USA Today ]

Movieline Has the Final Word on Conangate — and the First Interview with the Author

Back in February, Viking confirmed that Bill Carter, the bestselling author of the Late Shift had flown to Los Angeles to begin research on a new book chronicling the latest late night shakedown at NBC. Proof of the project arrived earlier this week online via cover art for The War For Late Night: When Leno Went Early and Television Went Crazy (pictured right) and a September release date. Anxious to hear more about the surefire bestseller, Movieline phoned Carter earlier this week to discuss the impending release date and whether Jay Leno is really as cold and calculating as Conan fans make him out to be.

Friday Night Lights’ Zach Gilford on His Big Episode, That Facebook Campaign, and the Series Finale

Friday Night Lights has always has passionate fans, but over the last few weeks, their fervor has been updated for the Facebook age. It’s due in large part to Zach Gilford’s shattering performance in the recent episode “The Son,” which found his character Matt Saracen grappling with his hated father’s death. Perhaps inspired by the grassroots activism that landed Betty White on Saturday Night Live , the website PopEater launched an unofficial Emmy campaign for Gilford (he’d be nominated in the guest actor category, since he went from regular to recurring this past season) and now it’s become a surging Facebook petition that’s brought a spotlight back to the acclaimed but underseen series. As he films an arc of episodes for the show’s fifth (and presumed-to-be final) season, Gilford rang Movieline to talk about filming the tough episode, the things we didn’t see, and what the FNL series finale will (and won’t) have in common with the final episode of lost.

World Cup 2010: France v Mexico – live! | Barry Glendenning

Hit the auto-update button for the latest posts, discuss all the day’s action and email barry.glendenning@guardian.co.uk 12 min: For Mexico, Franco turns and shoots over the bar from the edge of the penalty area. Moments previously, France had gone close when Malouda tried to pull the ball back for Ribery in the Mexico penalty, only for a defender to make a crucial interception. There was somebody nipping at Malouda’s ankles in a crowded penalty area – if he’d gone to ground he might well have got a penalty. 10 min: It’s been an entertaining opening 10 minutes, despite the best attempts of the referee, who seems a bit whistle-happy and has already had words with Mexican full-back Ricardo Osorio, telling him to pull his sleeves down. Are referees even allowed do that? 8 min: From outside the centre circle inside his own half, Carlos Vela dinks a beautifully weighted long ball over the top of the France defence. It bounces and sits up beautifully for Carlos Vela to try his luck with a diagonal volley or square for two team-mates – Franco and Salcido – sprinting into the middle. The Arsenal striker opts to shoot but blasts the ball high over the bar. 7 min: In quick succession, both goalkeepers are forced to race into action to catch through-balls being chased down by strikers. Hugo Lloris was probably given most to think about. 5 min: Mexico striker Guillermo Franco picks up the first yellow card of the night, either for a foul on Abou Diaby or for standing in front of the ball so FVrance couldn’t take a quick free-kick. He’s furious with the referee. Nic Anelka blasts the ball over the bar from the edge of the final third. 3 min: Mexico gallop clear on the break, the ball is played down the left channel into the path of Giovani Dos Santos, who shoots across the face of goal only to see the ball hit the foot of the post and bounce back into play. Wouldn’t have counted anyway – he was offside. 2 min: Mexico concede a free-kick not far inside the Mexico half for a Carlos Salcido bodycheck on Franckl Ribery. The ball is launched high into the night sky towards the Mexican penalty area. They clear their lines. 1 min: Mexico win the toss on a windy night in Polokwane and Elect to play from right to left. France kick off. Both sets of players line up in the colours you’d expect them to. Not long now: The teams emerge from the tunnel, led by the referee who picks the ball of its plinth. I remain cautiously optimistic that one of them will forget to do that some night and then have to scurry back to get it hoping nobody will notice. Alternatively, it would be amusing if whoever it is whose job it is to place it on the plinth decided, for a laugh, to put a rugby ball or a nice cake there instead. What are they going to do on the night of the final, when they’ll need two plinths: one for the World Cup trophy and one for the official match-ball? These are the things I lie awake at night thinking and worrying about. Brian O Donnchadha writes: “I’ve been living in the states now for just over four years and I was finally beginning to forget what craggy-face Dunphy looked like,” he says. “Thanks for undoing years of hard work.” Living in the States with a name like that? Rather you than me. I’m going to go out on a limb and guess the natives struggle with it. Match pointers with which to bore your fellow drinkers (if you’re in the pub and reading this on an iPhone or Blackberry, for whatever reason) • Mexico have never won a World Cup match against any of the seven countries that have won the competition (11 defeats and five draws) • France are unbeaten in their last eight finals games, although they have drawn half of those matches • Mexico have scored at least one goal in each of their last nine World Cup games against European sides • Nicolas Anelka has failed to have a shot on target in 384 consecutive minutes for the French side • Mexico have made it to the knockout stage in their previous five World Cup participations On yellow cards and will miss next match if they get booked France: Jeremy Toulalan, Patrice Evra, Franck Ribery. Mexico: Efrain Juarez, Gerrardo Torrado. France: Lloris, Sagna, Gallas, Abidal, Evra, Govou, Toulalan, Diaby, Malouda, Ribery, Anelka. Subs: Mandanda, Reveillere, Planus, Gourcuff, Cisse, Gignac, Henry, Squillaci, Diarra, Valbuena, Clichy. Mexico: Perez, Osorio, Moreno, Rodriguez, Salcido, Marquez, Giovani, Juarez, Torrado, Vela, Franco. Subs: Ochoa, Barrera, Castro, Blanco, Aguilar, Hernandez, Guardado, Magallon, Torres, Bautista, Medina, Michel. Referee: Khalil Al Ghamdi (Saudi Arabia) Okey dokey , for anyone who’s heard about them, but never seen them in action, here’s RTE’s answer to the Match Of The Day Lineker, Hanson, Shearer and Dixon axis of tedium in action, picking over the bones of the Republic of Ireland’s exit from the World Cup qualifying play-off at the hands of France. From the left: Bill O’Herlihy and pundits John Giles, Graeme Souness and Eamon Dunphy. This is Dunphy in comparatively mellow mode. Here is in slightly less mellow mode after seeing Sven-Goran Eriksson being interviewed by Garth Crooks after England struggled to beat Ecuador four years ago. Good evening everybody. Sombreros, berets, comedy moustaches, onion necklaces and other lazy national stereotypes at the ready for tonight’s Guardian minute-by-minute coverage of this Group A encounter at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane, 1,229m above sea level. To put that in perspective, this is the fourth highest of the 10 World Cup finals venues. To put that in even more perspective, Paris is 130m above sea level at its highest point, compared to Mexico City at 2,240m. I make that advantage Mexico before a Jabulani has been kicked … 5mph faster than it would be at sea level. Diego Forlan drove Uruguay top of this group last night with their emphatic win over hosts South Africa, which means defeat for either of these two sides would leave them in all sorts of bother, leaving them three points off the pace with one match to play and relying on other results, goal difference, other teams not conspiring against them by colluding and all the usual last-round-of-the-group-stage shenanigans. But you’re clever and already know all that, so you don’t need me to tell you. If you’re struggling to recall how either or both these sides fared in their opening matches because you’re in the early stages of senility, your synapses are fried through years of alcohol and/or drug abuse, or some other reason, here are David Hytner’s report on France’s dull opener against Uruguay and Paul Wilson’s account of Mexico’s opener against South Africa , for your reading pleasure. Kick-off is at 7.30pm. I’ll be back at 7pm or so to bring you all the team news and pre-match build-up. World Cup 2010 France Mexico World Cup 2010 Group A Barry Glendenning guardian.co.uk
