‘X-Men: First Class’: Everything We Know So Far

Superhero film has been a revolving door of writers, directors and actors. By Eric Ditzian “X-Men: First Class” Photo: Marvel “X-Men: First Class” is gathering a hefty ensemble of mutants and villains. There have been so many casting rumors and announcements that it’s gotten hard to keep track of everything, and director Matthew Vaughn even had to reassure us that the flick wouldn’t get too crowded with characters. “In terms of having a lot of mutants, it doesn’t feel that busy,” he said. “I don’t feel worried about it. I think it will be really cool to see all these guys doing their stuff.” Vaughn has already handled an ensemble of superheroes and villains in “Kick-Ass,” so we trust him on this one. Still, there’s a lot to remember. The latest casting developments arrived Tuesday, when word broke that a slew of actors had signed on to “First Class,” including January Jones (“Mad Men”) in the role of telepathic mutant Emma Frost. As the cast continues to grow, we’ve gathered everything there is to know so far about “X-Men: First Class.” November 19, 2008 : 20th Century Fox taps “Gossip Girl” creator Josh Schwartz to pen the “First Class” script . February 10, 2009 : Despite speculation that Schwartz would also hop into the director’s chair, he tells MTV News he won’t be helming the flick . April 15, 2009 : Producer Lauren Shuler Donner reveals that among the characters to be featured in “First Class” will be young versions of Cyclops, Beast and Jean Grey . August 21, 2009 : Bryan Singer, who directed two previous “X-Men” films, is said to be “flirting” with the idea of directing “First Class.” December 17, 2009 : Singer signs on to direct . December 18, 2009 : Schwartz’s “First Class” draft gets tossed , and Fox hires Jamie Moss (“Ghost in the Shell”) to pen a script based on Singer’s treatment. The studio is said to be moving “aggressively” with development. March 21, 2010 : News breaks that Singer is ditching directing duties , though he’ll remain on the project as a producer. May 5, 2010 : “Kick-Ass” director Matthew Vaughn signs on to direct. Fox announces the film will hit theaters on June 3, 2011 . May 28, 2010 : James McAvoy agrees to play young Professor Charles Xavier. The story will reportedly follow the early days of the partnership between Professor X and Magneto as they train the first generation of mutants before a violent rift developed between them. June 18, 2010 : Michael Fassbender enters talks to play Magneto, and Benjamin Walker joins up as Hank “Beast” McCoy. June 28, 2010 : Rumor has it that Alice Eve is in negotiations to play Emma Frost. July 8, 2010 : Nicholas Hoult replaces Walker in the Beast role, and Caleb Landry Jones lands the part of Banshee. Beast was previously played by Kelsey Grammer in 2006’s “X-Men: The Last Stand.” July 15, 2010 : Kevin Bacon finalizes his deal to play the central villain. Jennifer Lawrence is booked for the role of Mystique (previously played by Rebecca Romijn). July 28, 2010 : “Twilight” star Edi Gathegi will play Darwin. August 16, 2010 : Jason Flemyng is in talks to play Azazel, the demonic mutant father of Kurt “Nightcrawler” Wagner. Oliver Platt will play the Man in Black , a non-mutant character. August 17, 2010 : January Jones steps into the role of Frost. Zoe Kravitz will play Angel, Bill Milner will be the young Magneto (Fassbender will play the older version) and Morgan Lily will become the young Raven. B.o.B Promises To Wear Nothing But Rocket Boots To VMAs

‘Airplanes’ rapper, who’s nominated for five awards, will also perform on September 12. By James Montgomery B.o.B Photo: MTV News First, B.o.B was just a humble 2010 MTV Video Music Award nominee (five times over). Now, he’s a VMA performer too. On Wednesday (August 18), it was announced that the man known as Bobby Ray would be taking the stage at the 2010 VMAs, joining a performers list that now includes Justin Bieber, Kanye West, Drake and Florence and the Machine. It was just the latest in a string of fairly remarkable news for the up-and-coming star of Southern hip-hop , who can already count a #1 album ( The Adventures of Bobby Ray ) and a pair of smash-hit singles (“Nothin’ on You” and “Airplanes”) among his accomplishments this year. And though he presumably didn’t know he’d be performing at the VMAs when we spoke to him earlier this month at Lollapalooza , B.o.B was already making plans to wow folks at the show. “I’m just gonna wear rocket boots the whole night. And nothing else,” he laughed. “Buck naked, rocket boots. That’s how I roll.” And while we suspect he was just kidding about the nudity (though, really, who can be sure?), B.o.B was dead serious about the honor of being nominated for the VMAs. Even though he didn’t really think his chances of winning a Moonman were all that good … then again, 2010 has been a banner year for him, so who knows? “I don’t know. I really don’t know. There are a lot of very talented artists and musicians in the categories I am nominated for, so really, I feel like just being nominated is cool,” he said. “Just being there, and showing myself, and being present is the main thing that matters. And if you win, that’s cool. You have something to take home, sit on your mantle for the rest of your life and show your kids. ‘Back when I was your age, I was winning awards. What are you going to do with your life?’ ” The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on September 12 at 9 p.m. ET. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for the winners from now through September 12. The G-Unit MC also took the opportunity to “pass the mic” to SB and ask the “Crank Dat” star a question. ” ‘Pretty Boy Swag’ was like one of my favorite records for the year,” Banks told Sway. “I wanna know what the next joint is gonna be. Justin Bieber, B.o.B To Perform At 2010 VMAs

Ke$ha and Ashley Greene join the star-studded presenters list for the live show on September 12. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber Photo: Mark Von Holden/ Getty Images One is a teen pop phenomenon known for inducing Beatles-level hysteria in his fans, the other, a free-spirit Atlanta MC whose debut album suddenly shot to pop success. Now, Justin Bieber and B.o.B are set to hit the stage as performers at this year’s 2010 MTV Video Music Awards . Bieber and B.o.B join already announced performers Kanye West , Drake and Florence and the Machine. Four-time nominee Ke$ha and “Twilight” star Ashley Greene will also be among the night’s presenters when the show goes live on September 12 from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles. The night will mark the first VMA performances for both Bieber (who presented at last year’s ceremony) and B.o.B. “I’m excited to be performing at the VMAs.

T.I. Says He’s Basking In B.o.B’s Success

‘All the hard work is paying off,’ Tip says of his Grand Hustle artist and five-time VMA nominee. By Shaheem Reid T.I. and B.o.B Photo: Jamie McCarthy/ Getty Images T.I. says his camp has worked diligently, so it’s OK to celebrate now. On Monday in New York, the King of the South reflected on the success of his Grand Hustle roster member B.o.B. We all know about steadfast and patient. And Bobby Ray had to practice that virtue the past couple of years while he waited for the release of his debut LP. Everything has paid off though, as B.o.B scored two #1 hit singles, critical acclaim for his body of work and most recently, five VMA nominations. “I feel like right now, all the hard work is paying off,” Tip said about Bob. “This is what everybody has been working for. This is [why] we go late nights in the studio, early mornings in the studio. This is the reason we miss days out of our children’s lives — for moments like these. For me not to sit here, reap the benefits and take the pleasure as well as taking the moment to bask in the glory of the success of what we have accomplished … It’s necessary, very necessary.” B.o.B’s “Nothin’ on You” is nominated for a VMA in the Best Pop Category while “Airplanes” is up for four Moonmen: Best Male Video, Best Hip-Hop Video, Best Collaboration and Video of the Year. “It’s very special to me,” the B.o.B said earlier this month. I think it’s a lot more special than the success of the singles, because this reflects the work I’ve put in over the years and the word of mouth I’ve helped create. It’s definitely amazing. I’m trying to find the words to explain it, but I can’t. It’s inexplicable. I’m a real simple man, so, you know, I accept every gift with generosity and gratitude.” What do you think about how Tip supports his Grand Hustle artist B.o.B? Tell us in the comments! Justin Bieber On VMA Promo: ‘I Like Girls Chasing Me’

‘I’m kind of like the Beatles running, and there’s girls chasing after me,’ he tells MTV News of ‘Hard Day’s Night’-inspired promo. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber Photo: Michael Loccisano/ Getty Images Justin Bieber is up for a Best New Artist VMA at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards , and in an upcoming promo for the September 12 show, the Biebs is tailed by his rabid female fans. “I’m kind of like the Beatles running, and there’s girls chasing after me,” he told MTV News of the “Hard Day’s Night”-style teaser. Given that girls chasing him is a standard day on the job for Bieber, he admitted that faking it wasn’t all that hard to do. “Everything’s been going pretty smooth,” he said. “I like girls chasing me, so it’s good.” This isn’t Bieber’s first time in an MTV awards-show promo: He very hysterically appeared in a Movie Awards teaser earlier this year with host Aziz Ansari and “Hurt Locker” star Jeremy Renner. While the shoots were equally fun, the tone of this promo is a bit different. “Aziz was really fun to work with,” he said of the Movie Awards promo. “It was really funny, and this is kind of more serious.” When Justin looks back on past VMAs, one of his fellow nominees stands out as a highlight. “All-time favorite moments of the VMAs? Probably when Eminem performed,” he said. “I’m just a big Eminem fan, and I remember turning on the VMAs and seeing Eminem perform.” Who would he like to see take the stage this year? “I’d love to see Beyonc

Deadmau5 Named House DJ For 2010 MTV VMAs

Kanye West Ropes In Nicki Minaj, John Legend, Swizz Beatz, Others for ‘Power’ Remix

‘I might have to put out 5 albums this year … My spirit is full ,’ Kanye tweeted. By Gil Kaufman Kanye West Photo: Robyn Beck/ AFP/ Getty Images Now that Kanye West is back on his grind, the LV Don appears determined to push harder than ever to produce unique music. Case in point: Over the past five days, in addition to performing at an intimate club show on Thursday, where he covered songs by Rihanna and Billy Joel and was joined by Estelle, Yeezy hit the studio to work on a remix of “Power” with an all-star cast. Given his new status as the Titan of Twitter, he, of course, tweeted about the progress of the sessions. “Scheduled studio visits 2day, Nikki [Minaj], John Legend, Mos Def, Swizz Beatz, Pusha T, Phillip Lim,” he wrote of a remix session that roped in everyone from the newlywed producer he has called one of the greatest of all time ( Beatz ), to Clipse member T and piano man Legend, who tickled the ivories for ‘Ye at Thursday night’s show. He likened the sessions to the all-star power summits of the early jazz era, writing, “remember jazz musicians used to collab and do 4 song albums or James Brown used to just keep dropping sh– back to back.” In that spirit, West added, “I might have to put out 5 albums this year … My spirit is full … My heart is open … People want new music … I can’t hold it back.” And that wasn’t all. He uploaded a photo from the studio that featured him with Beatz and Def, as well as another pal who knows a thing or two about harnessing the power: Los Angeles Lakers legend Kobe Bryant. “Kobe helped me finish my #POWER remix verse … Just building on the concept of #POWE… and Mos helped me find the ‘old me’ lyrically,” he explained early Sunday morning. After a “super late” night in the lab with Mos that lasted early into Sunday morning, West said he was feeling so inspired that he actually had to unplug himself before he laid down the longest verse in rap history. “I had to cut my POWER remix verse short to not over do it with the million bar verse like the 2nd verse of ‘See Me Now,’ ” he wrote. “There’s so many ways to break down the subject of power … me and Kobe went in on it… Perfect person to help out on that.” In addition to teasing a possible Justin Bieber/Raekwon collabo , throwing out some random props to M.I.A., Matt & Kim, and Fiona Apple, and taking a break to go jogging (in Lanvin gear, of course), ‘Ye ended what sounded like a sleepless weekend on a creative and emotional high. “Sometimes I can’t control my excitement,” he wrote Sunday afternoon. “So happy … so creative … in the studio … ready to create … finished ‘Power’ verse … more music.” And, in keeping with his status as the new pied piper poet of Twitter, ‘Ye — who will appear at this year’s MTV VMAs on September 12 — wrapped the creative marathon with an early morning tweet on Monday that summed up his new philosophy: “I’m just tryna keep it symmetrical.” Right. The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday, September 12, at 9 p.m. ET. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for the winners in general categories, including Best New Artist, from Tuesday (August 3) through September 12. Drake Wishes Lil Wayne Could Join Him For 2010 VMAs

‘We could get him out for a day,’ MC says of his incarcerated mentor. By Jayson Rodriguez Drake Photo: MTV News TORONTO — Drake will make his VMA debut next month when he performs at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards , and the Thank Me Later star is already thinking about making a grand entrance. He has some history to compete with — it’s hard to beat Diddy arriving via yacht or T-Pain riding an elephant into the festivities. Drake is still wrapping his thoughts around some ideas, but one plan he wishes he could execute is to step onto the VMA red carpet with Lil Wayne. “That would be the illest moment,” Drake said while taking a break from a VMA promotional shoot. “Mob through. The whole Young Money. … Nobody knew about it. We just all show up. … Or we could get him out for a day. And even if he had to wear a jumpsuit or something.” Wayne began his one-year prison sentence for a 2007 gun charge March 8. Unfortunately for Drake, according to prison records accessed by MTV News in July, Lil Wayne has a projected release date of November 4, two months after the VMAs, which will take place September 12 in Los Angeles. Drake, Kanye West, and Florence and the Machine were announced earlier this week as this year’s VMA performers. The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on September 12 at 9 p.m. ET. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for the winners from now through September 12. How do you think Drake should arrive at the VMAs?
