XKCD on BP Oil Spill (Featuring Michael Bay!)

This isn’t the whole comic, go to the site to see the whole thing. Image: XKCD , Creative Commons. “A Rolling, alligator-filled wall of flame!” I won’t write too much here because there’s a kind of Catch 22 going on: If you are a geek, chances are you’ve already read this comic, and if you aren’t, chances are you won’t like XKCD. But it’s still cool to see Randall Munroe (XKCD’s creator) give his take on the BP oil spill (hey, it could be worse, just ask Michael Ba… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Scotland Considers Shipping Water to Drought-Stricken England

Photo via AndyRob Despite the overall impression that England is a rainy place, there are areas in with drought is taking its toll. The country already imports around two-thirds of its water in the form of products , but it may one day start importing water more directly from its neighbor to the north – at least, that’s the possibility according to Mike Cantlay, the convenor of Loch Lomond national park and chairman of the tourism ag… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Sarah Palin Defends "Drill, Baby, Drill" on Twitter

Image: Twitter, @SarahPalinUSA Palin’s Twisted Logic You have to give her that, it takes guts to seriously pretend that the BP oil spill tragedy in the Gulf of Mexico is evidence that “drill, baby, drill” was a more environmentally-friendly policy. Let’s start with the hypocrisy: Never at any time before the BP oil spill did the “drill, baby, drill” crowd advocate stopping offshore drilling and replacing it with onshore drilling…. BP Denies Existence of Giant Underwater Oil Plumes

Image: NASA , public domain. It already has been a few weeks since scientists have detected large underwater oil plumes in the Gulf of Mexico, but BP is still denying that they even exist. Maybe they’re saying that in good faith and truly haven’t found them, but let’s also remember that they have an incentive to downplay the scale of the spill because the fine they will have to pay will be based on how many b… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Rachel Maddow Covers Gulf Oil Spill… From 1979 By Alex Weprin on May 27, 2010 09:12 AM In one of the more interesting cable news reports about the gulf oil spill, MSNBC's Rachel Maddow busted out some footage from the NBC archives. Maddow broadcast reports from an oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, caused when an oil rig exploded. Except that the reports were from 1979, not 2010. Amazingly, the techniques currently being used to try and cap the leak appear to be exactly the same as the ones used over 30 years ago. The only difference are some subtle (and funny) name changes. What BP called the “top hat” containment effort earlier this month, was called the “sombrero” back in '79. ‘Top Kill’ Attempt to Plug Oil Leak is Working, Says Coast Guard Admiral [Updated]

BP’s robots are inspecting the well-head to see if the top kill succeeded. Image: BP It’s Working So Far, But Not Over Yet U.S. Coast Guard Admiral Thad Allen told the media this morning that BP’s “top kill” effort that started yesterday ( after many delays ) has “stabilised the wellhead” and that pressure coming from the well is now “very low”, but further efforts will be required to reduce the pressure to zero and seal the well with cement. … Read the full story on TreeHugger

Gulf BP oil spill top kill picture

A graphic illustrating the “top kill” procedure which BP will start to contain the massive Gulf of Mexico oil spill by sealing a ruptured well. BP nervously carried out final tests Wednesday before a risky deepwater bid to cap the Gulf of Mexico oil leak under huge pressure to get it right this time and plug the five-week-old spill. The “top kill” procedure aimed at stemming the massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico by shooting mud into the blown-up well 5,000 feet underwater will likely cont
