After watching a Will Ferrell comedy like The Other Guys , you might be expecting an outtake reel or a bizarre epilogue to play underneath the closing credits. Instead, director Adam McKay (whose political essays often appear at the Huffington Post) took the opportunity to illustrate the rampant financial corruption of America in a Rage Against the Machine-scored animated interlude.

Google and Verizon Propose Two-Tiered Internet System

In technology news, Google and Verizon have issued a proposal that could radically restructure the internet by essentially creating a two-tiered internet system. At first glance, the Google and Verizon proposal appears to promote the idea of net neutrality, that users should have equal access to all types of information online. But the Google and Verizon proposal includes a massive loophole that would exempt from net neutrality protections all internet access over cellphone and wireless networks and any future new subscription services that broadband providers could offer. Jason Rosenbaum is with the Progressive Change Campaign Committee. Jason Rosenbaum: “The Google and Verizon deal announced today is the first step towards corporate control over the internet. They propose creating two tiers of internet service: a public version of the internet that everybody will be able to use without fear of discrimination and then a private version that the big corporations will control absolutely. And that’s the version that they are likely going to put all of their investment in. So when it comes down to it, people in America will have a choice: they’ll be able to use the corporate-controlled internet, where they’ll get their information from corporate sources very quickly, or they’ll be able to use the, quote-unquote, 'public internet,' and that’s going to be relegated to the slow lane.” Craig Aaron of the group Free Press says the Google plan could permanently shift who controls the internet. Craig Aaron: “The beauty of the internet is that you’re able to get online, go wherever you want, do whatever you want, download whatever you want. And if you’re a content creator, then you have the opportunity to have the reach of a television station or a radio station or a cable channel. All you have to have is that good idea or something interesting to say. But if you change the way the internet works, if you reserve that fast lane just for a few select companies, that opportunity goes away.” Jason Rosenbaum of the Progressive Change Campaign Committee says he also has concerns about the impact of the Google-Verizon proposal on free speech online. Jason Rosenbaum: “We’ve already seen how corporate control over networks can lead to political discrimination. So, there was a text message sent out by NARAL Pro-Choice that was blocked by wireless carriers, because the wireless carriers disagreed with the message. When you have internet activities or various online activities running on a corporate-controlled network, you’re opening the door to these kinds of censorship. It’s very much a free speech issue, very much a civil rights issue. http://www.democracynow.org/2010/8/10/headlines#2 added by: treewolf39

‘Jersey Shore’ Newbie Deena Fits In With Castmates, Snooki Says

‘Not [just] anybody can survive in this house,’ Snooks says of her pal. By Mawuse Ziegbe, with reporting by Audrey Kim Deena Nicole Cortese Photo: MTV News Deena Nicole Cortese is looking to make a splash as the newest addition to the “Jersey Shore” house. The New Jersey native, who originally auditioned for season one of the guido-fest, has been pals with Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi, for two years. When the chance to party on the boardwalk with her rowdy bestie presented itself, Cortese said she jumped at the opportunity. “When [Snooki] invited me down I was just like, ‘I’m down the shore anyway. This is what I do for a good time always,'” Cortese reasoned, adding that she has tons of experience living it up in Seaside Heights. “I lose jobs because I’m down the shore so much,” she said. “So, I was like, ‘You know what. I’m packing my bags, let’s go.’ ” She may be ready to party like her friend but unlike Snooki, Cortese isn’t combing beachside bashes for a relationship. “I snook for love and she snooks for a good time,” Snooki said. Cortese concurred, adding that she’s not looking for a gorilla to call her own anytime soon. “We’re two peas in a pod but a little bit different,” she said. Cortese plans to help her girl in her quest for seaside romance but insisted viewers won’t catch the two scrapping over the same juicehead. “We won’t step on each other’s toes,” Cortese said. The 23-year-old is stepping into a house packed with colorful personalities including Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino, Jenni “JWoww” Farley and Paul “DJ Pauly D” Del Vecchio. Cortese said her chill nature sets her apart from the crew. “I’m different because I’m just a personable person. I don’t take things to heart. People can make fun of me ’til the day I die and I will just take it in and be like, ‘Yeah, you know what? Whatever,’ ” Cortese laughed. “I just don’t care what people think and I think that’s what everybody in the house loves about me. They can bust on me all the time and the next day I’ll just be like, ‘Alright, get real.’ ” Snooki said that Cortese fits right in with the “Shore” collective and that her transition into the cast has been drama-free. “Not [just] anybody can survive in this house and the fact that the first 24 hours that I brought her in … everything was cool I was like, ‘Alright, this is gonna be a good summer,’ ” Snooki said. Florence And The Machine Call VMA Nods ‘A Dream Scenario’

‘It’s kind of strange and wonderful and terrifying all at the same time,’ Florence Welch tells MTV News. By Kara Warner Tuesday’s announcement of the 2010 Video Music Awards nominees included familiar favorites (Lady Gaga, Eminem, Katy Perry), as well as a few fresh faces and lesser-known acts. One such artist is British songbird/rocker Florence Welch, of Florence and the Machine , whose “Dog Days Are Over” is nominated for four VMAs : Best Rock Video, Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography and, the big one, Video of the Year. When MTV News caught up with the lead singer in between shows in Sydney, Australia, she was still getting over the shock of her nominations. “I’m still kind of processing it, to be honest,” Welch said. “It’s such an iconic event, and it’s something I’ve watched on TV since I was a kid. It’s one of those things: It’s not real life, it’s a dream scenario. So for me to be actually a part of it feels like I’m in some sort of parallel universe. It’s kind of strange and wonderful and terrifying all at the same time.” Regarding her fellow nominees, Welch admitted she’d love a chance to chat with Gaga. “I love her work,” she said. “I’ve met her twice now, and she’s always been so lovely. If I get to see her again, that would be nice.” Performance-wise, Flo said she’d like to see Drake up on the VMA stage. “I’m a huge fan of Drake, so if he’s going to be there, I’d like to meet him.” The London native called her nominations and the opportunity to attend the show “the most incredible thing ever.” “I wrote ‘Dog Days’ in a [closet] with my friend Isabella [Summers]. We had no instruments, we banged our hands against the walls. We were using pans as instruments,” Welch explained of the song’s creation. “We did it for fun, and then the video … I wanted it to be as artistic as possible. It wasn’t about being pretty,” she said. “I wanted something that was striking and made me look a bit scary, so for it to be recognized at something as huge as the VMAs is the most incredible thing, and I’m just really grateful for the opportunity to go. It’s incredible.” The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday, September 12, at 9 p.m. ET. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for the winners in general categories, including Best New Artist, through September 12.

Ke$ha Talks Touring With Rihanna: ‘We Braid Each Other’s Hair … Naked’

‘I’m kind of just, like, her hype girl,’ opening act tells MTV News of Rihanna. By James Montgomery Ke$ha Photo: MTV News We’re rather mystified by reports that Rihanna’s Last Girl on Earth Tour has been struggling to sell tickets. After all, from what Ke$ha tells us, it sounds like the can’t-miss show of the summer. “We have slumber parties and pillow fights and we braid each other’s hair a lot,” Ke$ha laughed. “We talk about boys, naked.” We’d pay $91.75 to see that. And while we suspect that Ke$ha — who, along with Travie McCoy , has been serving as the opening act on the Last Girl jaunt — was only kidding about those backstage shenanigans, she has been having a blast on the tour. She said that sharing the stage with Rihanna has been a highlight of her still-young career. “Touring with Rihanna is incredible, you should come see it. It’s really fun. I’ve been out with her for about two weeks now, and I just learn so much from her as a performer,” she said. “She has one of the best voices of anyone I’ve ever seen live, and I kind of just take it as my opportunity to hype up thousands of people.” And though her duties as opener — and hair braider — are rather taxing, Ke$ha is also using days off from the tour to play headlining shows of her own. Because she’s still got plenty of energy left in the tank, even after she’s spent the whole night hyping the crowd … and having pillow fights. “It’s epic. She’s amazing live and her voice is just so good,” Ke$ha smiled. “I’m kind of just, like, her hype girl. I take the stage and hype it up for 40 minutes.” Related Artists Ke$ha Rihanna

Drake Gets ‘Fancy’ With T.I. And Swizz Beatz On Video Set

‘It’s a dedication to the ladies who take pride in being the flyest and finest,’ Tip tells MTV News of the clip. By Mawuse Ziegbe, with reporting by James “FLX” Smith Drake Photo: MTV News Drake’s upcoming “Fancy” video features a couple of stars known for cranking out hard-hitting hip-hop, but this time, the Toronto MC enlisted T.I. and Swizz Beatz to craft a sexy ode to the ladies. “It’s a dedication to the ladies who take pride in being the flyest and finest that there are out there to be noticed,” T.I. told MTV News on the set of the sleek clip, which reflects the song’s sultry vibe. The video features Drizzy, Tip and Swizz in all-black everything, spitting suave lyrics and flanked by leggy dancers in formfitting bodysuits. In his cool Atlanta drawl, T.I. chatted about participating in the collabo and sang the praises of Drake and Swizzy. “I was offered the opportunity and given the pleasure to be a part of this monstrosity of a record by young Drizzy and my big homie O.G., player, partner Swizz Bizzy,” Tip said. “I’m honored, privileged and absolutely pleased to be a part of this extravaganza that you are witnessing before you here today.” Anthony Mandler, who has helmed all the clips from Drizzy’s Thank Me Later, said the singer/MC’s approach to his work influences how the director develops the accompanying visuals. “For me, there’s a lot of pressure, because I feel like he’s creating music from a place that’s so pure and so unique and so original that it pushes me to try to create imagery that stands in the same zone,” Mandler said. Drake also lavished Mandler with respect and said his work with the director has changed his perspective when it comes to making videos. “As far as me evolving as a visual artist, I started in a place where visuals weren’t my strongest aspect. Me and Anthony shot ‘Over’ together, and for the first time, I really felt like, ‘This is how I’m supposed to look,’ ” Drake said. “From there, it’s sorta been like an inseparable bond.” Are you looking forward to the “Fancy” video? Will Mark Ruffalo Play The Hulk In ‘The Avengers’?

Actor is reportedly ‘in late-stage discussions’ to take over Edward Norton’s role in the comic book supergroup. By Kara Warner Mark Ruffalo Photo: Mike Coppola/ FilmMagic Hot on the heels of Marvel’s big announcement Monday that Edward Norton would not be reprising the role of Bruce Banner in “The Avengers” comes a report that studio head Kevin Feige and company have tapped Mark Ruffalo to take over the role. According to Deadline Hollywood Daily , Ruffalo is “now in late-stage discussions between Marvel and his brand-new agency United Talent to play this key member of the Avengers ensemble.” Regarding the ensemble in question, which includes Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/ Iron Man, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Chris Evans as Captain America, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury and Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Feige’s statement seemed to hint that the production wanted more of a team player: ” ‘The Avengers’ demands players who thrive working as part of an ensemble. … We are looking to announce a name actor who fulfills these requirements and is passionate about the iconic role in the coming weeks.” Whether Norton fit the bill is up for debate, but Ruffalo has often appeared in films as part of an ensemble or in various scene-stealing supporting roles (he was also an MTV Movie Awards nominee with “13 Going on 30” co-star Jennifer Garner for Best Musical Performance in 2005) and has a reputation within the industry for being very well-liked among his peers. When MTV News spoke with Ruffalo about the possibility of his taking on a comic book character or movie, the actor revealed he had been in talks to play Harvey Dent in “The Dark Knight,” calling it the “Godfather” of comic book movies. “[It] raises the bar on anything,” he said of “The Dark Knight.” “Nothing can touch it in that genre. It’s great filmmaking.” Ruffalo added that he wasn’t sure if tights or superhero garb were in his future, but that he’s open to the opportunity. “I don’t know if I’ll ever end up in that world,” Ruffalo told MTV News. “But I’d love to work with Christopher Nolan. He’s one of those directors you want to work with. He’s a great director.” What do you think of Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner? Let us know in the comments!
