Is The Washington Legislature Really ‘Too Busy’ To Protect Medical Marijuana Patients?

Artwork: Jimmy Wheeler The late Jimmy Wheeler, a medical marijuana patient in Washington, created this artwork. Now a proposed patient protection bill will be named in his honor. By Steve Elliott at Toke of the Town As most medical marijuana patients in the state already know, the current medical marijuana law in Washington doesn’t protect patients from search, arrest or prosecution. The recent Washington Supreme Court ruling in State v. Fry further highlighted how little protection — as in almost none! — the current law gives “legal” patients. Medical marijuana activists Ken Martin and Steve Sarich of patient advocacy group CannaCare contacted every Senator and Representative in Washington at the beginning of the current 2010 legislative session, attempting to find a sponsor for their new bill that would finally offer legal patients protection from arrest and prosecution. “We could not find a single sponsor for this bill,” Sarich told Toke of the Town . “Those I actually spoke with told me they were ‘too busy’ this session.” “This made us curious about what, exactly, these legislators were so busy working on (besides new taxes on just about everything),” Sarich said. “What we found amazed us.” “Here are just a few of the bills that our legislators believed were more important than protecting sick and dying patients in Washington,” Sarich said. XB 6255 Concerning mute swans. SB 5192 Allowing dogs in bars. SB 6207 Allowing local governments to create golf cart zones. SB 6284 Recognizing Leif Erickson day. HB 1024 Designating Aplets and Cotlets as the state candy. XB 6128 Concerning taxation of little cigars. HB 1137 Protecting landowners’ investments in Christmas trees. SB 5011 Prohibiting the sale or distribution of certain novelty lighters. HB 1638 Concerning colon hydrotherapy. HB 1993 Allowing fishing license holder to use two poles in selected state waters. “Perhaps these bills are truly important to some people,” Sarich allowed. “That said, I think it’s insulting to tell patients that making Aplets and Cotlets the official state candy is more important than keeping patients from being searched, arrested and prosecuted.” Medical Marijuana Lobby Day: Wednesday, February 24 “It’s time to send the message to our elected officials, and Medical Marijuana Lobby Day is the opportunity to do that!” Sarich said. “Show up and have your voice be heard.” “We are gathering at 1 p.m. on the north stairs of the Legislative Building,” Sarich said. “We’ll have white booths there with literature, posters and special medical marijuana patient scarves with buttons that say “STOP ARRESTING PATIENTS.” According to Sarich, the goal is to educate legislators, “let them know we are voters and activists,” to to gather legislative sponsors for the “Patient Protection Act” for the 2011 legislative session. “The bill will be named the ‘Jimmy Wheeler Memorial Patient Protection Act’ in honor of my friend and longtime activist who was providing medical marijuana to patients before there there was legal medical marijuana,” Sarich said. “Jimmy died recently without ever seeing patients free from arrest and prosecution in his lifetime,” Sarich said. “Please ask yourself how many more of us have to die before they realize we are not criminals.” “How many patients need to be persecuted before our elected officials provide us with the same protections offered to the rest of the disabled and terminally ill patients in this state?” Sarich asked. “I’m tired of being a second class citizen!” “We will do our best to arrange transportation for you to this historic event,” Sarich said. Avril Lavigne Falls Through The Rabbit Hole For ‘Alice’ Video

Clip features scenes from ‘Alice in Wonderland’ along with newly shot scenes of Canadian pop star. By Jocelyn Vena Avril Lavigne in “Alice” Photo: Disney It’s a tale as old as time: Distraught girl sees bunny, follows him, falls down rabbit hole and finds herself in a mad, mad world. It also happens to be the plot for Avril Lavigne’s new music video, “Alice,” off the “Alice in Wonderland” soundtrack , which premiered on Vevo . The video opens with Lavigne decked out in modern-day pop-punk street clothes. She sees a rabbit and follows him into a world that features Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter, a piano and lots and lots of mushrooms. In this world, it seems, she must wear an old-timey dress. Scenes from the film are edited with newly shot scenes of Lavigne. The Canadian pop star stares and runs around aimlessly as she sings, “When the world’s crashing down/ When I fall and hit the ground/ I will turn myself around/ Don’t you try to stop me.” In one scene, she sits down at the Mad Hatter’s tea party before running off to try to find her way back home. Eventually all works out for Lavigne. She’s back in the real world with her memories of Wonderland safely intact as she fondly looks back. Lavigne recently blogged about the video’s premiere , writing, “I had so much fun doing this video. We shot it in the Los Angeles Arboretum. … It was beautiful. We wanted the visuals to capture the spirit of the movie.” Although the video gives fans a taste of what they can expect from the Tim Burton-directed flick, Lavigne says that writing the song for the film has amped up her desire to see the finished product. “I feel very lucky to be a part of Tim Burton’s new film ‘Alice in Wonderland,’ ” she blogged about the project . “Working on this project was such a treat! It was such a great experience and Tim Burton was an absolute pleasure. He is very smart. I am so grateful for this opportunity … and can’t wait to see the whole film!!!!” Related Photos Freeze Frames: “Alice In Wonderland” “Alice In Wonderland” Related Artists Avril Lavigne

Olympics Opening Ceremonies: An Athlete’s Perspective

As the Winter Olympics get under way in Vancouver, softball gold-medalist Jennie Finch looks back at her Beijing days. By Josh Wigler, with reporting by Christina Garibaldi Jennie Finch Photo: MTV News Six years ago, world-renowned softball pitcher Jennie Finch took home the gold medal at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. Though Finch and her team settled for silver in 2008, the Beijing games provided Finch with at least one reward she didn’t earn in Athens: the opportunity to participate in the opening ceremonies. “My first [time at the] Olympics was in Athens, and I wasn’t able to go the opening ceremonies, so when I went to Beijing, I was super excited about it and looking forward to it, because that means you’re at the Olympics,” Finch told MTV News. “Getting ready for it, you had to think about what 90,000 people are going to look and feel like walking out. I can remember the staging process — it was hours and hours of waiting. We finally made it, walking into [Beijing National Stadium], and all of Team USA started chanting, ‘USA!’ That was the moment for me. It was so awesome because it was so much bigger than the city you’re from and the state you represent. You were there with Team USA representing your country as one.” Finch doesn’t plan to attend the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, but the excitement surrounding the games this year reminds her of what it felt like to be heading into the competition. “The atmosphere at the Olympics is intense,” she said. “I can remember being a month out and just the anticipation and the anxiety — you’re trying to make so many hours of each day because you have to do this, you have to do that, you have to prepare, you have to be ready. It’s just this constant build. Then finally being there, it’s like, ‘OK, we’re here. Now it’s time to compete.'” While pre-game jitters come with the territory, Finch’s advice to first-time competitors is to take a deep breath, relax — as much as possible, at least — and revel in the experience. “My advice to first-time Olympians would be to enjoy it,” she said. “Definitely enjoy it. You’re a part of history, and you’re doing something that you’ve worked hard at for so incredibly long, so enjoy it. I think my best advice would be to just play your game. Play your event, whatever it is, rather than thinking about, ‘Here I am, representing my country on the Olympic stage.’ Take it back to when you were young, playing the sport that you loved.” MTV News is on the ground in Vancouver all week, so stay tuned for more coverage of the 2010 Winter Olympics.

The Next Stars of an MTV Show of the Day

These kids are pretty fucking amazing. I love their punk attitude and how they think the whole thing is a fucking joke, because it is a fucking joke, not that I know what they did wrong, but it can’t be anything too seriously, it is just them wasting the resources of their local police force, who arrested them, making a bigger deal out of the shit than necessary and it ended up landing them on TV where they had the opportunity to say shit like “Kids Stay in School” and “I love Angelina Jolie”. I hope these fuckers get their own show, far more interesting than The Hills.

How is Marinelli an upgrade for Bears?

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — I made no bones about being an unabashed advocate for Chicago hiring Mike Martz as its offensive coordinator. And so I don’t mind telling you that I see no upside in promoting Rod Marinelli to defensive coordinator. Marinelli has never been a coordinator in 33 years as a coach, and his new responsibilities will take at least some of his focus away from his specialty as a defensive line tutor. Marinelli wasn’t known for his organizational skills as Detroit’s head coach from 2006 to 2008 and he doesn’t seem well-suited for this job. Frankly, I wonder if Marinelli thinks it’s a good idea. Last month, coach Lovie Smith strongly implied Marinelli didn’t want the job. Here’s what Smith said Jan. 5: “I’ve talked to Rod about all of the different things I am going to do. Rod would like to be in his position of being an assistant head coach, and helping me with other things like that, and coaching the defensive line. That’s a full-time job.” So Smith pursued one-time Bears assistant Perry Fewell for the job, only to be spurned when Fewell joined the New York Giants. With few other options, it appears Smith talked Marinelli into making the change. In a statement released Friday, Smith said: “We considered outside possibilities, but I didn’t feel our defense would benefit the same way it will with Rod in the coordinator role. From the first day I became head coach of the Chicago Bears I envisioned Rod as our defensive coordinator. I considered him for the role last year, but wanted him to have the opportunity to work exclusively with our defensive line and become acclimated to our team. He will remain in our defensive line room, but will add the responsibility of the defensive calls on game day.” Assistant defensive line coach Eric Washington was promoted to the full-time role, but it sounds as if Marinelli will split his time between the line and his coordinator duties. To me, that presents a problem on both fronts: His influence with the line will be watered down, and the Bears still don’t have a coach to serve solely as the defensive coordinator. Wasn’t that what they needed after Smith gave up those duties after the season? There are some ways this could work, and it’s worth noting that Marinelli and Smith are united in their advocacy of the Tampa 2 scheme. It’s ingrained in their souls and they should be able to hit the ground running. But it sure feels like the Bears targeted only one candidate for this job and were at a loss after Fewell went to the Giants. Ultimately, it seems they circled back on an emergency backup plan. Their offense got better with the additions of Martz and offensive line coach Mike Tice. I can’t say the same about their defense after Friday’s moves.

Sophie Turner’s Side Boob Goodness

Obviously hot Aussie nobody Sophie Turner wasn’t actually invited to the Grammy Awards , but of course she managed to wrangle up an invite to one of the hundreds of after parties. I for one am glad she did because here she is in a sweet backless dress showing off some solid sideboob. I would just like to take this opportunity on behalf of all my readers to thank the gay guy who invented the sideboob dress.
