WaPo Highlights ‘Local Opinion’ Politicizing Nun’s Death in Favor of ‘Comprehensive Immigration Reform’

The Washington Post has an opinion blog entitled “All Opinions Are Local.” Print edition editors regularly pick from the blog to excerpt a post to the editorial page under the heading “Local Opinions.” Today’s entry, “Stop the torrent of hate after a deadly drunk-driving crash,” was filed by one Simone Campbell of Washington, whom the Post noted “is executive director of Network, a Catholic social justice advocacy group.” The online edition bears a much blander headline, “A proper tribute to Sister Denise,” referring to Denise Mosier, the nun who was killed in a Sunday car crash by repeat DUI offender and illegal immigrant Carlos Martinelly-Montano. In her 3-paragraph piece, Campbell essentially lumped xenophobes and racists in with conservative critics of law immigration enforcement, slamming “hate speech” on “The Post’s online comments section” and insisting that Martinelly-Montano’s immigration status did not cause “this tragedy.” Campbell then promptly proceeded to politicize Mosier’s death by arguing that “comprehensive immigration reform” would “be a proper tribute to Sister Denise’s memory.” The Post did not note that Campbell’s group Network supports a “Realistic path to earned legalization for people in the U.S. without status,” in other words, amnesty to immigrants in the United States illegally.  What’s more, by publishing Campbell’s mini-screed, the paper passed over a more measured, conservative post by Paige Winfield Cunningham of the blog Old Dominion Watchdog.  In her 8-paragraph August 4 post, “The human cost of immigration dysfunction,”   Cunningham cautioned against politicizing a tragedy, but noted that doesn’t excuse ignoring the policy implications of lax immigration enforcement: Victims exist on both sides of every issue. They’re easy to find on the left side of the immigration debate — for example, the children of illegal immigrants whose parents constantly fear deportation and struggle to create a life better than the one they left behind. On the other side of the debate, victimization is often expressed in large numbers that fail to communicate individual suffering — like how health-care services funded by taxpaying citizens are strained by millions who don’t pay. But this week, a tragic accident involving three Benedictine sisters from Richmond offered the right a story of how deportation gridlock hurts real people. One of the nuns was killed and two were left in critical condition after their vehicle collided with a car driven by 23-year-old Carlos A. Martinelly-Montano, an apparently illegal immigrant who was charged in the accident with DUI for the third time. It’s ironic that the crash occurred in Prince William — the county known as the toughest in the state on immigration. Prince William has been something of a microcosm of the larger debate since it enacted a policy in 2008 requiring officers to check immigration status upon arrest. In the first full year of the policy, 13 percent of arrests for DUI were suspected illegal immigrants, according to the 2009 Prince William County Police Report . Illegal immigrants also constituted 10 percent of drivers without licenses and 9.4 percent of drivers in hit-and-run accidents. The Benedictine Sisters have warned against using Monday’s accident for political gain, saying they “are dismayed and saddened that this tragedy has been politicized and become an apparent forum for the illegal immigration agenda.” But these three nuns, and the victims of other such accidents, shouldn’t be ignored. Space considerations may have factored into the Post not running Cunningham’s item in full, but it could have posted an excerpt lengthy enough for print but just enough to tease readers to check out the Post website. Instead, Post editors opted to run an editorial by a professional left-wing activist over a local political blogger.  It’s not surprising given the Post’s editorial bent, perhaps, but it is a disservice to print edition readers given the marked contrast between Campbell’s simplistic, boilerplate screed and Cunningham’s measured tone, which is the furthest thing possible from Campbell’s straw man of pseudonymed blog commenters venting their spleens with anti-immigrant hate.

Local CBS Staff Join Hollywood Celebs in ‘The Dream Lives On’ Boston Pops Tribute to Kennedys

Less than an hour before CBS’s Craig Ferguson-hosted 10 PM EDT “ Boston Pops Fourth of July Fireworks Spectacular” national broadcast on Sunday night, local anchors Jack Williams and Lisa Hughes from Boston’s CBS-owned television station , along with a couple of local actors, took to the stage to narrate the music-accompanied “The Dream Lives On: A Portrait of the Kennedy Brothers.” ( Video: downloadable from NB twenty second wmv clip of Williams and Hughes in action.) Introducing the 20-minute production carried by WBZ-TV channel 4 in Boston in its 8-10 PM EDT coverage, Pops conductor Keith Lockhart ludicrously insisted it was “not political” — even though it takes its name from Ted Kennedy’s very political 2008 Democratic convention speech aimed at motivating Democrats to push for left-wing policies, starting with nationalized health care, and culminates by quoting the call to arms in that address: “If we set our compass true, we will reach our destination. The work begins anew, the hope rises again and the dream lives on!” That line was read by actor Morgan Freeman Jr. in the original May 18 production at Boston’s Symphony Hall ( mov video excerpt ) and coinciding with the concert at Boston’s Hatch Shell along the Charles River, the Pops trumpeted : On July 4, the Boston Pops will release a CD featuring the live recording of the world premiere performances of “The Dream Lives On: A Portrait of the Kennedy Brothers,” which took place at Symphony Hall May 18 & 19 with guest narrators Robert DeNiro, Morgan Freeman, Ed Harris, and Cherry Jones… In liner notes for the CD (PDF) , composer Peter Boyer expressed a “deep admiration for the Kennedys” and related: [I]t was not until I began to research his life for this project that I became more fully aware of the remarkable scope of his legislative achievements , over more than four decades. For me, the most inspiring aspects of the Kennedy brothers’ legacy are a commitment to idealism, and a sense of enduring optimism for our nation and for mankind. Thus the title of the work, The Dream Lives On, is taken from one of Ted Kennedy’s last public speeches, at the Democratic National Convention in 2008. My May 16 NewsBusters post, “ Leading Actors Lend Their Voices to Boston Pops’ Tribute to the Kennedy Brothers, ” described: A production which “combines quotes from speeches by the Kennedy brothers with original text and video, accompanied by a dramatic orchestral and choral score” so it “pays tribute to the towering achievements and singular spirit epitomized by the Kennedy brothers – the call to public service, drive for social change, and the legacy of optimism for America’s future.”… A promotional video features “Tony Award-winning lyricist Lynn Ahrens” relating the lyrics she created for the concert: Now on the rain-slicked streets of Boston and across the wind-swept Cape Code sea, over the din of Washington’s halls and down the halls of history, their passionate words can still be heard, their highest ideals a clarion call; these three American brothers inspiring the best in us all. More celebrity performances are to come: Actor Alec Baldwin will take the lead for a July 18 performance at Tanglewood and actor Chris Cooper will narrate a Hyannis Village Green event on August 1.

No Palin Setback Too Small for Couric Who Skips How Palin ‘Acted in Good Faith’

Demonstrating that no setback for Sarah Palin which can be portrayed as a rebuke is too insignificant or relevant for Katie Couric, she made time on Thursday’s CBS Evening News to inform her viewers about a disputable technical violation of arcane law: One little word will cost Sarah Palin a small fortune. Today, state investigators in Alaska said a legal defense fund she set up while she was Governor was illegal. They said the use of the word “official” on the fund’s Web site implied it was endorsed by the office of the Governor. Palin’s lawyer says she will return the fund’s nearly $400,000. Unmentioned by Couric? How Timothy Petumenos, the investigator/counsel for the Alaska Personnel Board which issued the ruling, absolved Palin of blame. “Petumenos found the 2008 GOP vice presidential nominee acted in good faith and relied on the advice of lawyers when setting up the fund,” the Anchorage Daily News reported in an afternoon posting. PDF of the board’s report , which noted: “Governor Palin complied fully with AS 39.52.210(a) by declining to take any proceeds from the Trust once the Complaint was filed pending resolution of this matter.”

Washington: Marijuana Legalization Gaining Momentum

By Steve Elliott at Toke of the Town “It’s an idea whose time has come,” said Douglas Hiatt, co-author of Initiative 1068, which would legalize marijuana in Washington State. And now it’s time for voters to take matters into their own hands, according to Hiatt. “This year, one in six legislators sponsored marijuana reform legislation,” the activist attorney said Tuesday at a press conference on the steps of the Capitol Building in Olympia. “And again this year, major reform did not get out of committee,” Hiatt said. “So we formed Sensible Washington and wrote an initiative that removes the criminal and civil penalties for adults.” Every poll taken shows that if I-1068 gets on the ballot, it will win. Washington voters support sensible marijuana laws. Tuesday’s press conference detailed a wide and diverse array of endorsements, from former Seattle Police Chief Norm Stamper to Republican legislator Toby Nixon. Photo:

UW Looking For Marijuana ‘Addicts’; Will Pay $150

Ever known someone who wanted help quitting pot? Me neither. By Steve Elliott at Toke of the Town They might have an easier time finding unicorns. The University of Washington says it is looking for people who want to quit pot. The UW School of Social Work’s Innovative Programs Research Group is looking for 70 “marijuana-dependent adults” in the Puget Sound area to participate in a clinical research trial testing approaches for people who want to stop using cannabis, reports KING5.com. The university says research has shown that nearly 3.6 million Americans use pot on a daily basis. Unfortunately, UW then puts its reputation as a center of higher learning in serious danger by absurdly claiming that “between one-third and one-half of those are dependent.” I’d love to know where the University of Washington got those numbers, but since they seem to have only the most tenuous of connections to shared reality, I’m guessing they’re from the “pull fake statistics out your ass” school of thought, sub-variety “I’ll say anything to get one of those fat government NIDA grants.” “When people smoke marijuana they don’t intend to become dependent on it, but marijuana becomes pervasive over time,” said Cynthia Shaw, project director of what they’re calling the “Marijuana Counseling Project.” “People work hard in treatment programs, and many stop or reduce their marijuana use while in treatment but lose ground quickly once they leave treatment,” said Shaw, who obviously has very little real-world experience with — or, apparently, even casual knowledge of! — marijuana. What Shaw didn’t mention — and I’m sure it was just an “oversight,” umm hmm — was that nearly all those people in rehab programs “working so hard” to quit marijuana were forced into those programs under threat of being thrown in jail. The judge says “Go to Narcotics Anonymous and tell them you’re a pot addict, or else go to jail.” Bingo! Instant marijuana addicts! Works like a charm. In any event, the Marijuana Counseling Project will test two nine-session counseling “proven treatments” (is your bullshit detector going off? I know mine is going crazy), “a blend of motivational enhancement therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy.” Participants will be offered additional counseling sessions “as needed,” and half will be randomly assigned to receive post-counseling “checkups,” which may well be a synonym for “piss tests.” To be eligible, volunteers must be at least 18, “want help in stopping marijuana use,” and be willing to travel to Seattle’s University District for “counseling.” Oh, and if you need a little additional “motivation” to claim you “want help in stopping marijuana use,” they’ll pay you to say so. Participants will receive $50 for each of two post-counseling interviews, and an additional $50 incentive if they complete both. Let’s see, that $150 would get me half an ounce… If you are interested in fleecing these poor credulous academics by participating in their sham “study,” or if you have questions about it, call Cynthia Shaw at (206) 616-3235 between 9 and 7 Monday-Thursday or 9-5 Friday, or email mcpsvcs@uw.edu .

Apple Only Wants 16+ Year-Olds Working Its Dodgy Sweatshops [Evil Corporations In Action]

Apple products are made in factories that regularly employ young teenagers, constantly work people more than 60 hours per week, and falsify records to cover up their misdeeds. That’s according to the shameless gossiping muckrakers at… uh, Apple Inc. The company’s brightly-named ” Supplier Responsibility 2010 Progress Report ” ( PDF ) contains some dark information about the contractors who actually make Apple products, mostly overseas and mostly in China. Like workers who were really 15 when they were supposed to be at least…. uh, 16, the ideal age for anyone in a factory: As Fake Steve Jobs put it, ” Tiny fingers, sharp eyes .” Also, it sounds like pretty much everyone is working insanely long hours, in excess of 60 hours per week: According to Apple’s report, workers often pay for the privilege of working these hours via recruiting fees, which in eight facilities were so extortionate as to be in violation of local law. At 24 factories, workers weren’t even making the local (shitty) minimum wage. At 48, they were deprived of proper overtime. At 57, they were screwed on sick leave and other benefits. And so on and so on. Then there was the lying: Three facilities were caught falsifying records for Apple on underaged labor and/or working hours, and one even got fired from doing business with Apple, for getting busted lying two years in a row. Apple has standards, you know. The Apple fanboys, naturally, are already defending the company from the negative press that’s come out of this report, saying other companies don’t even bother to investigate suppliers as Apple does. AppleInsider quoted CEO Steve Jobs at the Apple shareholder meeting: Jobs… passionately argu[ed] that the media and environmental groups have ignored the real issues to focus mainly on what promises companies were making, even though many companies do not actually meet their promised goals. Apple, Jobs said, was focused on actually achieving results. Jobs’s argument about achieving results rings hollow given that Apple got serious about this issue nearly four years ago. Apple launched audits — and promised progress — in response to a 2006 report in the Daily Mirror about low pay and marathon work hours at iPod factories in China. Yet the past year has seen the violations cited in Apple’s report, a worker at one of Apple’s largest contractors, Foxconn, committing suicide after an aggressive interrogation by Foxconn security, and the reported roughing up at least two journalists investigating Apple product factories. In response, from Apple, we have a report that names no names, specifies very few penalties and generally offers to fix things with toothless or meaningless correctives like “detailed standards,” “appropriate management systems,” “third-party consultants,” self inspections, “management systems… to drive compliance,” “management systems to ensure accurate payment,” and the always reliable “clear policies and procedures.” If this is “achieving results,” things must have been pretty terrible a few years ago. Maybe, just maybe, in a couple of years, the 16-year-old child laborers in Apple product factories might pay legitimate fees to work 60-hour weeks for no less than the crappy local minimum wage. Progress! (Pic: A customer at the first Apple Store in China, 2008, Getty Images.)

Is The Washington Legislature Really ‘Too Busy’ To Protect Medical Marijuana Patients?

Artwork: Jimmy Wheeler The late Jimmy Wheeler, a medical marijuana patient in Washington, created this artwork. Now a proposed patient protection bill will be named in his honor. By Steve Elliott at Toke of the Town As most medical marijuana patients in the state already know, the current medical marijuana law in Washington doesn’t protect patients from search, arrest or prosecution. The recent Washington Supreme Court ruling in State v. Fry further highlighted how little protection — as in almost none! — the current law gives “legal” patients. Medical marijuana activists Ken Martin and Steve Sarich of patient advocacy group CannaCare contacted every Senator and Representative in Washington at the beginning of the current 2010 legislative session, attempting to find a sponsor for their new bill that would finally offer legal patients protection from arrest and prosecution. “We could not find a single sponsor for this bill,” Sarich told Toke of the Town . “Those I actually spoke with told me they were ‘too busy’ this session.” “This made us curious about what, exactly, these legislators were so busy working on (besides new taxes on just about everything),” Sarich said. “What we found amazed us.” “Here are just a few of the bills that our legislators believed were more important than protecting sick and dying patients in Washington,” Sarich said. XB 6255 Concerning mute swans. SB 5192 Allowing dogs in bars. SB 6207 Allowing local governments to create golf cart zones. SB 6284 Recognizing Leif Erickson day. HB 1024 Designating Aplets and Cotlets as the state candy. XB 6128 Concerning taxation of little cigars. HB 1137 Protecting landowners’ investments in Christmas trees. SB 5011 Prohibiting the sale or distribution of certain novelty lighters. HB 1638 Concerning colon hydrotherapy. HB 1993 Allowing fishing license holder to use two poles in selected state waters. “Perhaps these bills are truly important to some people,” Sarich allowed. “That said, I think it’s insulting to tell patients that making Aplets and Cotlets the official state candy is more important than keeping patients from being searched, arrested and prosecuted.” Medical Marijuana Lobby Day: Wednesday, February 24 “It’s time to send the message to our elected officials, and Medical Marijuana Lobby Day is the opportunity to do that!” Sarich said. “Show up and have your voice be heard.” “We are gathering at 1 p.m. on the north stairs of the Legislative Building,” Sarich said. “We’ll have white booths there with literature, posters and special medical marijuana patient scarves with buttons that say “STOP ARRESTING PATIENTS.” According to Sarich, the goal is to educate legislators, “let them know we are voters and activists,” to to gather legislative sponsors for the “Patient Protection Act” for the 2011 legislative session. “The bill will be named the ‘Jimmy Wheeler Memorial Patient Protection Act’ in honor of my friend and longtime activist who was providing medical marijuana to patients before there there was legal medical marijuana,” Sarich said. “Jimmy died recently without ever seeing patients free from arrest and prosecution in his lifetime,” Sarich said. “Please ask yourself how many more of us have to die before they realize we are not criminals.” “How many patients need to be persecuted before our elected officials provide us with the same protections offered to the rest of the disabled and terminally ill patients in this state?” Sarich asked. “I’m tired of being a second class citizen!” “We will do our best to arrange transportation for you to this historic event,” Sarich said. For more information, contact Ken Martin at (509) 235-5485 or Steve Sarich at (206) 407-3017.

Holder shows no interest in justifying ‘preventive detention’

The five-page letter (PDF) that U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder issued this week defending the decision to treat the Christmas Day bomber suspect as a criminal suspect, rather than as a wartime captive, offered new insight into the Obama administration's view of the limits of preventive detention. The letter suggests that the administration sees virtually no legal foundation for holding terrorism suspects arrested on U.S. soil in preventive detention and has very little interest in trying to create any. He didn't confine his reasoning to the specifics of Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab's case, but instead offered an overarching view of the current state of the law. “Some have argued that had Abdulmutallab been declared an enemy combatant, the government could have held him indefinitely without providing him access to an attorney,” Holder wrote. “But the government's legal authority to do so is far from clear.” Holder suggested that the administration would need to see a “court-approved system” for domestic military detentions to conclude that it did have the authority. http://rawstory.com/2010/02/holder-shows-interest-justifying-preventive-detentio… added by: SleepDirt
