Saturday Night Live Scorecard: Was Paul Rudd Once Again Overshadowed by His Musical Guest?

Poor Paul Rudd. Last time he hosted SNL , his performance was overshadowed by musical guest Beyoncé (and her “Single Ladies” sketch with Justin Timberlake). This time Rudd had to compete with a Beatle. After a very slow start, the Paul Rudd-hosted edition of SNL recovered into one of the most memorable but wildly unbalanced episodes of the season. Let’s be clear: Rudd did a fine job, but this was Paul McCartney’s episode. Not only did McCartney appear in three different sketches, the former Beatle got four — four! — musical segments: Performing “Jet,” “Band on the Run,” a “Day in the Life”/”Give Peace a Chance” hybrid and “Get Back.” So, how was the rest of the show that didn’t involve McCartney singing? On to the scorecard!

By James Dinh Christina Aguilera Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Getty Images Just like “American Idol,” the hit U.K. talent show “The X Factor” knows how to pull out all the stops for the finale. During a news conference Thursday (November 9), the finalists revealed a star-studded lineup of collaborations, including Christina Aguilera, Rihanna, Robbie Williams and will.i.am., for the final show of the season on Saturday. “We will be duetting with Robbie Williams,” judge Simon Cowell said on behalf of his five-member boy band One Direction. Asked how they felt about working with the British singer, one member was especially eager to collaborate with such a high-profile artist. “I’m a massive fan of Robbie,” Louis Tomlinson said. “In the U.K., he’s absolutely massive, and it’s an honor for us to get a chance to perform with him.” Another music sensation fans can expect to see grace the “X Factor” stage is Christina Aguilera. “I’m duetting with Christina Aguilera, and I’m very happy,” Rebecca Ferguson revealed. “She’s very talented and amazing.” Cher Lloyd announced that she’ll team up with Black Eyed Peas frontman will.i.am for her performance. The 10-year daughter of Will and Jada is officially a music superstar, thanks to her chart-busting single “Whip My Hair.” She performed this fun song at Friday’s Christmas tree lighting in Los Angeles. Paramore Get Troops Rockin’ And Reflecting At ‘VH1 Divas’

Hayley Williams and co. performed ‘My Hero’ and ‘The Only Exception’ in Kuwait for Sunday’s show. By Aly Semigran Paramore’s Hayley Williams performs for “VH1 Divas Salute the Troops” Photo: VH1 “Hero” is a word that is often synonymous with members of the military, so it was quite natural that Paramore paid their respects to the men and women in uniform by covering the Foo Fighters’ 1998 arena rock classic “My Hero” for “VH1 Divas Salute the Troops.” In their performance in front of troops at Camp Arifjan in Kuwait — which was followed by sets back in San Diego from stars like Keri Hilson , Nicki Minaj and Sugarland — frontwoman Hayley Williams, looking as rocker chic as ever with pink hair and a blue sequined jumpsuit, alerted the crowd, “This one’s for you” as her band kicked into the tune’s instantly recognizable opening notes (particularly Taylor Hawkins’ heart-pounding drum intro, taken over here by Zac Farro). It seemed the troops were just as ready to rock out as Williams and co. were, as they quickly turned into a sea of signs of the horn and crowd-surfers. (Click here to see photos from “VH1 Divas Salute the Troops” .) Amid the flashing lights, both onstage and coming from the countless cameras flashing from the crowd (many of whom held glow sticks too), Williams belted out Dave Grohl’s catchy chorus, “There goes my hero/ Watch him as he goes/ There goes my hero/ He’s ordinary.” Paramore, who have previously covered “My Hero” (from the Foo’s defining 1998 record The Colour and the Shape ) on the compilation album Sound of Superman, didn’t miss a beat during their stint on Sunday’s show. Williams and her bandmates then took a breaking from rocking and slowed things down a bit with their love song “The Only Exception.” The audience showed their appreciation for the band with waving hands and lighters. The band provided one of the evening’s few subdued numbers of the night, and the swaying crowd (many of whom sung along with the chorus, “But you are the only exception “) gave the show a much-needed moment of reflection. While the song may not have been as obvious a choice as “My Hero” (particularly when they have a hard-rocking repertoire that includes hits like “Brick by Boring Brick” and “Decode”), it seemed to resonate hugely with the crowd (many of whom, perhaps, were thinking of their loved ones at home during the performance, particularly during lines like “I know you’re leaving in the morning when you wake up/ Leave me with some kind of proof it’s not a dream”). The service members attending the “VH1 Divas Salute the Troops” weren’t the first to take Williams’ ballad to heart this year. The tune was also featured in the wildly popular Britney Spears episode of “Glee,” in which Lea Michele echoed Williams sentiment that, “That was the day that I promised/ I’d never sing of love if it does not exist.” What did you think of Paramore’s performances of “My Hero” and “The Only Exception”? ‘It’s a Lot of Pressure’: Jesse Eisenberg Reacts to NBR Win, Awards Season

Thursday afternoon, I met Jesse Eisenberg at a New York City dive bar — coincidentally named “Social” — for a pretty sprawling interview that will publish here next week. As he was en route, he heard the news that he had won the National Board of Review’s Best Actor award for his performance in The Social Network (which also claimed the group’s Best Picture and Best Director prizes). I asked Eisenberg about winning that award and what the awards season — and his real first go around with it — means to him.

REVIEW: Paul Giamatti Anchors a Sprawling Barney’s Version

Though it’s wrong to think that curmudgeons are more complex than shiny, happy people are, it’s probably safe to assume they make more interesting movie characters — as long as you don’t have to live with them. In Barney’s Version, Richard J. Lewis’s adaptation of Mordecai Richler’s novel, Paul Giamatti plays the kind of guy most of us wouldn’t want to live with, a grouchy two-bit television exec who’s blown through several marriages and who doesn’t seem to have much use for anyone. But the modest trick of the performance, and of the movie around it, is that a person who seems wholly unbearable at first ends up being someone we can almost care about. That’s the power of art: What does it mean when you find yourself reaching out to a guy you can barely tolerate?

Nicki Minaj Tweets About Regis Philbin ‘Bootygate’ Incident

Veteran talk-show host inappropriately touched Nicki after her performance on ‘Live With Regis and Kelly.’ By Gil Kaufman Nicki Minaj Photo: Steve Granitz/ WireImage Nicki Minaj has a lot to be thankful for this week. Her debut album, Pink Friday , is headed for a #2 bow on the Billboard 200 albums charts, with one of the highest first-week totals ever for a female rapper’s first effort. But after a bizarre incident during a Monday taping of “Live With Regis and Kelly,” the Young Money queen took to Twitter to air her feelings about the show’s legendary 79-year-old male co-host. After Minaj sang her hit single, “Right Thru Me,” on the program, Philbin and co-host Kelly Ripa came over to greet the 25-year-old MC. That’s when Philbin looked her up and down, said, “I love the way you dress,” and tapped Nicki on the rear end with his hand. After years of putting up with Philbin’s bizarre antics, even Ripa was surprised, yelping “Regis! What just happened?” Minaj tried to play it off, answering Philbin’s follow-up about how she hooked up with label boss Lil Wayne. “So, what advice does Lil Wayne give you?” an unphased Philbin asked. “Wayne tells me to go hard,” Minaj answered. “Go hard?” Philbin deadpanned to the audience’s groans. “I wish I could.” After the show, Nicki took to Twitter to answer a question from a follower who asked, “What went thru your mind when Regis had slapped ya? That was epic!” Minaj wrote back, “LOL. I was in shock!” Related Videos ‘Nicki Minaj: My Time Now’ Related Artists Nicki Minaj

James Franco, Anne Hathaway May Host The Oscars

Actors reportedly have been asked to host and it ‘looks like’ both have accepted. By Eric Ditzian James Franco and Anne Hathaway Photo: Jon Kopaloff/ Jim Spellman/ FilmMagic/ WireImage In an unexpected Oscar turn two years ago, Anne Hathaway joined host Hugh Jackman onstage for a parody of “Frost/Nixon.” And James Franco ‘s entire career, from starring in “General Hospital” to appearing as a pillow-humping version of himself in “30 Rock,” can be filed under the category of “What will that dude do next?” Well, as unexpected as it may be, next up for both Franco and Hathaway might be jobs co-hosting the 83rd Annual Academy Awards next year. Deadline Hollywood reports that the actors have been offered the gig and it “looks like” both have accepted. MTV News’ requests for comment from the Academy and Franco and Hathaway’s reps were not returned as of press time. Whether or not Franco hosts the show, he figures to play a prominent part in the ceremony. The 32-year-old is considered a lock for a best-actor nomination for his turn as a trapped hiker in “127 Hours,” the Danny Boyle-directed drama that’s also expected to nab a Best Picture nod. Hathaway, 28, meanwhile, remains a long-shot in the best-actress category for “Love & Other Drugs,” a film that received mixed reviews and reeled in just $14 million over the extended Thanksgiving holiday. Hiring Franco and Hathaway as hosts would certainly mark a strategic turn by the Academy, which has long been accused of being out-of-touch with the young pop-culture mainstream. A quick scan of the last two decades of Oscar history shows that not one host has even been as young as in his or her 30s when emceeing the show. Most recently, 64-year-old Steve Martin and 51-year-old Alec Baldwin assumed hosting duties, notching the show’s best ratings in five years.
