‘American Idol’ Report Card: Who Was A Star On Movie Night?

Crystal earns an Excellent grade for her ‘Caddyshack’ cover; Big Mike’s ‘Free Willy’ fails. By Eric Ditzian Crystal Bowersox performs on “American Idol” Tuesday Photo: FOX The numbers in our “American Idol” classroom are dwindling, and that’s forcing producers to get creative. Thus Tuesday night’s Songs of Cinema theme introduced a dose of group work into the live show, as the top four contestants sang a couple of duets in addition to their familiar individual efforts. The ensembles proved to be the night’s saving grace. Before we dole out the grades, we’ve got an extra credit question for the “Idol” conspiracy theorists among you: What was the thinking behind pairing Crystal Bowersox with Lee Dewyze and Michael Lynche with Casey James? Hmmmm. And how about a bonus extra-credit question: What does it mean that for three out of the four contestants, their duets were far superior to their solo performances? In any event, “American Idol” is a competition for individuals, and the singers must be graded on this basic fact: How did each one fair? That’s exactly what we plan do as we push forward with another edition of our “American Idol” report card. (And don’t miss Jim Cantiello’s recap of their performances in the MTV Newsroom.) Excellent Crystal Bowersox : Her blown-glass mic stand was back, and so was MamaSox! After two straight weeks of adequate, if not revelatory, performances, the 24-year-old stormed back with a truly unlikely performance. A song from freakin’ “Caddyshack” ? Really? And yet, the country-rock makeover she gave Kenny Loggins’ “I’m Alright” simply worked. By now we hardly have to mention that her vocals were on point; they’re always on point. And then her duet with Dewyze (“Falling Slowly” from “Once”) showed off such easy chemistry, such likability, we’d say she might just have locked up the competition. But we already knew that, right? Good Casey James : Casey probably should have known better, picking “Mrs. Robinson” after his entire story arc this season has boiled down to a cougar-rific connection to Kara DioGuardi. Wise or not, the song — with its mandolin-driven bluegrass feel — was a pleasing choice that stayed well within James’ vocal abilities. Was it a bit lazy, as Simon Cowell suggested? Perhaps. But we’d take a few more weeks of “Mrs. Robinson”-esque ditties rather than James back in his bar-band rocker mode. Meanwhile, his duet with Big Mike of Bryan Adams’ “Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman?” was an even stronger performance. It’s going to be very interesting to see what happens between these two singers come elimination time. Satisfactory Lee Dewyze : We’ve known for a long time now that Dewyze suffers from persistent pitch problems. Have those deficiencies ever been on display as glaringly as they were during Seal’s “Kiss From a Rose”? As the judges pointed out, that tune is a crazily difficult one to pull off, and Dewyze simply wasn’t up to the challenge. He did little to change up the tune, and while we wouldn’t go so far as to label the performance “karaoke” — as Cowell did — we will say that it was a colossal disappointment from a singer who’s supposed to be giving Bowersox a run for the “Idol” crown. Luckily for him, he was paired with MamaSox for his duet, and he rode her dreadlocks to the highest praise of the evening. Unsatisfactory Michael Lynche : Big Mike gives us our toughest call of the night. Was he merely OK during Michael Jackson’s “Will You Be There,” or truly subpar? We enjoyed the gospel choir backing him up, but there’s no getting away from the roller-coaster path of his vocals from beginning to end. But in the end, Big Mike ends up at the bottom of our grading curve for making the worst song choice of the evening. Even Ellen DeGeneres couldn’t help but mock the selection, calling “Free Willy” “one of the classic, great movies of all time.” If you believe that one, you might also believe that Big Mike has a shot at winning “Idol” season nine. Andrew Garcia Says ‘American Idol’ Judges Were ‘Really Hard’ This Year

‘Idol’ castoff also insists he’s not boring: ‘If they hung out with me, they’ll love me.’ By Katie Byrne Andrew Garcia on “American Idol” Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Getty Images Andrew Garcia just couldn’t get past his Hollywood Week performance of … do we even need to remind you which song by a former “American Idol” judge he covered? His uninspired performance of Elvis’ “Hound Dog” was the last straw, and he was sent packing , along with Katie Stevens, during Wednesday’s results show. We caught up with the acoustic crooner on Thursday (April 15) to talk about his “Straight Up” albatross, his bromance with Lee Dewyze and much more. Q : You had a lot of hype going into the semifinals after your take on Paula Abdul’s “Straight Up.” Do you think your early fans were disappointed with the direction you went once the live shows started? A : I felt super excited coming into the top 24, and I don’t feel like I let my fans down at all. My fans are just so amazing, and they get me, and that’s all that matters. I know I didn’t let them down, and they know I didn’t let them down. Q : After weeks of bad reviews, were you surprised that the judges loved your take on Chris Brown’s “Forever” during R&B week ? A : I kind of knew it was gonna be a good night, just because I’m a guy who does current music and puts my acoustic twist on it. And I saw that song, and I was like, “Man, I gotta do something with that song. It’s current and my feel too.” I’m a kind of R&B/pop kind of guy. I put my twist on it, and I felt it 100 percent. I was just like, “You know what? I know the fans and supporters are gonna love it.” And I went out there, confident, and it showed. And [the judges] loved it. Q : Simon often got on your case for being boring, and mentor Adam Lambert even said you needed to liven things up. Why do you think your personality didn’t translate into your performances? A : Well, onstage, I was focused more on just performing. They’re talking about personality; they don’t really hang out with me, so they can’t really talk about someone’s personality if they’re not trying to hang out with me. If they hung out with me, they’ll love me. Guarantee. Q : After Michael Lynche was given a second chance , were you disappointed or relieved that the judges’ save wasn’t on the table for you this week? A : At that point, I was just happy with where I was at and how far I’d gotten. And the save, they couldn’t have did a better save. Michael Lynche, that guy is a warrior, and I love that guy. Q : Do you think this year’s judging panel was harder on the contestants than last year’s? A : I felt like it was harder, just ’cause they were being really hard this year. I don’t know why, but they’re being really, really, really hard on the judging. Q : Ryan Seacrest was especially wacky this week, even slow dancing in the aisle during Tim Urban’s performance. What were you thinking when you saw his behavior? A : I was like, “Ryan has lost his mind.” But I love the guy. He works a lot, so he has the right to get a little coffee in him now and then. Q : What brought you and Lee together as friends? A : We find ourselves doing the same thing at the same time, and it’s just really weird. Like, “What the heck?” We look at each other, and we’re like, “Dude, we’re meant to be!” Q : Will you be rooting for Lee at future shows? A : I will for sure go to the shows and cheer him on. That’s my brother for life. Were you sad to see Andrew go? Are you excited to hear his post-“Idol” music? Let us know in the comments below! Snoop Dogg, Kid Cudi Join Forces For ‘That Tree’ Video

Dressed like Cheech and Chong, the rappers get goofy in their ode to evergreens. By James Montgomery Snoop Dogg and Kid Cudi in “That Tree” Photo: Capitol Records Great minds think alike. So, when Snoop Dogg and Kid Cudi — two men who share an affinity for, shall we say, herbal remedies — get together on a track called “That Tree,” it’s a pretty safe bet neither of them were thinking about conifers. If they were thinking at all. “Tree,” a new cut off the reissue of Snoop’s Malice in Wonderland album, isn’t about forestry at all. It’s a classic stoner jam, a light ‘n breezy ode to the sticky green stuff, featuring a hazy, loping beat courtesy of Diplo. The accompanying just-released video is appropriately laconic and bedheaded. Directed by Erick Peyton, the clip for “That Tree” is basically a four-minute stoner comedy, featuring brightly colored, slightly goofy set pieces like dancing two-dimensional trees, women dressed as lumberjacks and a big, shiny sun. You know, the kind of stuff that looks like it was lifted from some smoked-out dude’s dreams. It’s a sly interpretation, made even more impressive when you realize that Snoop and Cudi are actually dressed like Cheech and Chong, circa “Up in Smoke” (no word on if their van is made entirely of weed). And, much like all great stoner comedies, there’s (sort of) a plotline involving the accidental ingestion of pot, a misplaced vehicle and a deer. Or something like that. These things tend to make more sense when you’re baked. The video is also amazing because it’s the kind of thing you usually don’t see from Snoop: It’s goofy and good-natured. In the past, even when he was being positively ridiculous (like, for example, his VHS-ified video for “Sensual Seduction”), there was a snarl to his performances, a bit of the braggadocio. In “Trees,” he seems content to just grin and watch the world drift by. And he looks like he’s having a blast doing it. And, really, who can blame him? Never underestimate the power of the trees, after all. Related Videos Snoop Dogg’s ‘That Tree’ Video Premieres Related Artists Snoop Dogg Kid Cudi

Whitney Houston Should Take Time To Recover

purepeople Former fashion model, singer and actress Whitney Houston is taking time to recover from a respiratory illness as adviced by doctors and is postponing her European tour. Scheduled originally for Tuesday in Paris, France, Houston had already held back the European kickoff.  According to the representative, doctors advised the singer to statement from a representative said doctors advised Houston to reschedule concerts on Thursday and Friday in Manchester, England, and a Sunday performance in Glasgow, Scotland. All concert dates are being rescheduled and the 46-year-old singer’s tour is now supposed to start next Tuesday in Birmingham, England. “Doctors visited Whitney late last night in Paris and confirmed that she was suffering from an upper respiratory infection,” the statement read. “Upon medical advice Whitney has been advised that she cannot perform to allow her time to recover.” The statement noted she delayed the tour with a “great disappointment.” Houston, is one of pop’s all-time best-selling artists. Had been on a hiatus from music as she battled drug addiction and ended a tumultuous marriage to singer Bobby Brown. But with her new CD, “I Look to You,” she returned on the top of the charts and declared herself healthy and free from substance abuse. The superstar has been on a world tour to promote the CD, which has sold more than 1 million copies in the United States alone. Performances, however, in Australia and elsewhere were negatively received by some fans and critics, who complained Houston did not showcase the majestic voice she is known for. Video snippets of her performances showed Houston sweating and struggling to hit notes, leading some to wonder about her health. In February, her representative issued a statement denying any troubles, saying, “Whitney is in great health and having a terrific time on her tour and with her fans.” Whitney Houston Should Take Time To Recover is a post from: Daily World Buzz Continue reading
