World Cup 2010: Steven Gerrard hopes old habits bring England progress | Kevin McCarra

The midfielder is set to return to a more advanced role and revive his ‘fantastic understanding’ with Wayne Rooney Steven Gerrard believes a return to old ways will bring impetus to England’s World Cup campaign in their match with Algeria tomorrow night. The Liverpool midfielder, who scored the opener in the 1-1 draw with the USA, expects to revert to the more advanced role he had in qualifiers that saw Wayne Rooney score nine times. There have been no further international goals for the striker since the 5-1 rout of Croatia at Wembley last September. The balance of the line-up will alter now that Gareth Barry is free of his ankle injury. With the holding midfielder in place, Gerrard should be liberated as he roves from an attacking post towards the left. “I think that’s the plan,” he agreed, as he anticipated linking with Rooney. “We’ve had a fantastic understanding in qualification. “I like playing with good players and I enjoy playing with Wayne. Hopefully I can provide a goal for him to get off the mark. I’ve said all the way through qualifying that, if we got to the World Cup, we’d need Wayne to be our top goalscorer and to score the goals to take us to the later stages because he’s our main player.” Gerrard, after a trying season with Liverpool, exudes a confidence now that he has been released into a World Cup campaign. Few anticipated that Rooney might be the person in need of a fillip, yet his one goal in an England shirt

Roger Federer vs. Igor Andreev — Australian Open 2010

www.fuzzyyellowballs.com Roger Federer and Igore Andreev are squaring off in the first round of the 2010 Australian Open. The last time Federer and Andreev played was the 2008 US Open, where Andreev pushed Federer to 5 sets before ultimately losing to the Swiss star. FYB’s prediction is that Roger will win in straight sets. While Andreev has a big game — particularly a massive forehand — his results since the 2009 US Open have been very poor. He lost in the first round to American Jesse Witten in that tournament and has only won one match on the professional tour since. We’ve got a prize for the person who predicts the score of this match the best — a $25 gift card from Tennis Express. Post your predictions in the comments for this video (before the match starts!).

Robert Pattinson Explains Sexiness Of ‘Twilight’ On ‘Nightline’

‘Eclipse’ star admits he took a Valium before auditioning for Catherine Hardwicke. By Gil Kaufman Robert Pattinson on “Nightline” Monday Photo: ABC For “Twilight” fans who felt there wasn’t enough Edward in “New Moon,” Robert Pattinson agrees . The actor said on “Nightline” Monday night, too, was frustrated at the spectral role his undead vampire hero played in the series’ second film, and that he’s excited to have a more robust presence in the upcoming third installment, “Eclipse.” “That was the most frustrating thing about the last one, I was just kind of straight on green screen, and I did it all in about two days at the end,” he said. In an era when the vampires of HBO’s “True Blood” get graphically involved with their human lovers, the chaste nature of the characters in Stephenie Meyer’s “Twilight” books has hooked a teen audience. But Pattinson — whose character insists that Edward and Bella must marry before consummating their love — thinks fans still enjoy the stories’ sexual tension. “If there was a hard and fast decision by both of them saying, ‘We’re going to remain virgins our entire life,’ it’s never going to happen,” he said. “I don’t think it would be a popular series. Anyone who likes the books, they all think they’re really sexy. They just like that moment, the kind of tipping point before it goes over. Everybody likes that. That’s the best part of a relationship.” And because auditions can be nerve-wracking, Pattinson admitted that he stole some Valium from a friend to calm his nerves before he auditioned for the first “Twilight” movie. “I knew it was going to be a long audition because I was doing a screen test and it was at the director’s house,” he said of his tryout for the first film with Catherine Hardwicke. “Twenty minutes before I had to leave, I suddenly started panicking. Luckily, the person I was staying with had enough Valium on their bedside table. I stole it. Probably one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.” Pattinson, 24, also admitted that the rush of instant success he’s had since “Twilight” became a worldwide phenomenon has made him question his mortality and good fortune. “I guess I just thought if too many good things happen, then you’re going to die at 30,” he said. “I was like, ‘I didn’t want that to happen.’ ” And when interviewer Chris Connelly noted that good things keep happening to him, Pattinson responded, “Yeah, so probably I’m going to die at 30. Actually, it’s God saying, ‘You shouldn’t have asked for too much.’ ” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . MSNBC on Etheridge Assault: An ‘Ambush Interview,’ GOP ‘Set Up’

In the 2PM ET hour on MSNBC, anchor Tamron Hall did a news brief on Democratic Congressman Bob Etheridge assaulting two students attempting to ask him a question last week, proclaiming: “…there are some Democrats that are blasting the people allegedly behind this video….some would catagorize that as an ambush interview…” Hall played a clip of the video showing the assault and afterwards quoted an written apology from Etheridge. She described how the video “first appeared on Andrew Breitbart’s conservative blog BigGovernment.org,” remarking that he “was partly responsible for that notorious ACORN video featuring conservative James O’Keefe.” Hall made sure to also mention that “O’Keefe pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor for entering Senator Mary Landrieu’s office under false pretenses.” Hall then suspiciously noted about the Etheridge video: “One of these so-called camera men at one point reportedly identified himself as a student, so there’s discrepancy over who these individuals really are.” In the 3PM ET hour on MSNBC, anchor Chris Jansing spoke with NBC correspondent Luke Russert about the altercation and explained to viewers: “…in spite of the fact of what we see on camera and his apology, there are Democrats, right Luke, who frankly say they think that we need to look beyond what might seem obvious.” Russert replied: “…nobody knows who these, quote, ‘students’ are” and cited Democratic Party spokesman Brad Woodhouse claiming they were actually Republican Party operatives. He concluded: “So a lot of Democrats are saying wait, hold on, this was a set up. This guy was intentionally put out to do this by the Republican Party.” Russert admitted: “We obviously don’t know if that’s true or not,” but quickly added, “it’s quite interesting that we do not know who the folks that actually took this video are, this late in the process. You’d think they’d want some notoriety, especially if they are perpetuating this cause against the Obama agenda.” After noting that Etheridge’s  House seat was “fairly safe,” Russert made the obvious observation that “…at the end of the day, everyone agrees, it’s never a good idea to physically assault somebody who’s trying to videotape you, especially in the YouTube age.” Here is a transcript of Hall’s June 14 news brief: 2:37PM EST TAMRON HALL: And North Carolina Representative Bob Etheridge is apologizing for a video that is all over the internet, people are buzzing about it. The video shows him confronted by two camera men as he leaves a fundraiser. [ON-SCREEN HEADLINE: Confrontation on Camera; NC Rep. Apologizes for Confrontation Caught on Video] [VIDEO OF CONFRONTATION] HALL: So in a written statement just a short time ago, the Congressman said, quote, ‘I deeply and profoundly regret my reaction and I apologize to all involved. Throughout my many years of service to the people of North Carolina I’ve always tried to treat people from all viewpoints with respect. No matter how intrusive and partisan our politics can become. This does not justify a poor response. I have and will always work to promote a civil public discourse.’ Meanwhile, though, there are some Democrats that are blasting the people allegedly behind this video. It first appeared on Andrew Breitbart’s conservative blog BigGovernment.org. Breitbart, you might recall, was partly responsible for that notorious ACORN video featuring conservative James O’Keefe, when he dressed as a pimp. After a separate video project, O’Keefe pleaded guilty to misdemeanor for entering Senator Mary Landrieu’s office under false pretenses. One of these so-called camera men at one point reportedly identified himself as a student, so there’s discrepancy over who these individuals really are. But for the record, the Congressman has made this an official conversation by releasing this written statement of apology, at least regarding his actions. Not certainly those of the people who, some would catagorize that as an ambush interview, ambushing him. Here is a transcript of Jansing’s later exchange with Russert: 3:15PM EST CHRIS JANSING: Republicans and Democrats are getting fired up over a new viral video posted today on a right-wing website. It shows Democratic Congressman Bob Etheridge of North Carolina in a sidewalk confrontation with someone who identifies himself as a student. [VIDEO OF CONFRONTATION] JANSING: An edited version of the tape first showed up on websites run by well-known conservative Andrew Breitbart, of the ACORN tape controversy. NBC News’s Luke Russert is on Capitol Hill for us. Alright, let’s start with the Congressman himself. I know you reached out to his office, what did you hear from them? LUKE RUSSERT: Yeah, so the Congressman was ready and willing. It had become quite a problem for him politically and he issued an apology saying, quote, ‘I have seen the video posted on several blogs, I deeply and profoundly regret my reaction and I apologize to all involved. Throughout my many years of service to the people of North Carolina I have always tried to treat people from all viewpoints with respect no matter how intrusive and partisan our politics can become. This does not justify a poor response. I have and I will always work to promote a civil public discourse.’ So Congressman Etheridge realizing this has become a very bad political story for him, realizing that he had to get out and make a comment. It took a few hours. This obviously happened last week, it was just put into the public sphere now for the mass media to see. Etheridge realizing that it had been politically damaging, coming out and saying that he regretted it. And quite frankly, just admitting that he really had a bad moment here, I mean, a physical altercation on the street in D.C., Chris. JANSING: Yeah, and in spite of the fact of what we see on camera and his apology, there are Democrats, right Luke, who frankly say they think that we need to look beyond what might seem obvious. RUSSSERT: There’s a few interesting things here, one is the face of the reported student is blurred out. At this moment, nobody knows who these, quote, ‘students’ are. The Breitbart folks have said that this video was submitted to them anonymously. Brad Woodhouse, a Democratic spokesman, said this in a memo that was obtained by Politico, quote, ‘This was a Republican Party tracking operation. If it wasn’t a party tracker or an intern, why is the face blurred and why is the source hidden? You know if it had been a right-wing blog that identified themselves, they’d be booking this person on TV all day.’ So a lot of Democrats are saying wait, hold on, this was a set up. This guy was intentionally put out to do this by the Republican Party. We obviously don’t know if that’s true or not, but it’s quite interesting that we do not know who the folks that actually took this video are, this late in the process. You’d think they’d want some notoriety, especially if they are perpetuating this cause against the Obama agenda. So it’s going to be interesting to see what happens from here on out. Politically, Bob Etheridge, though, is fairly safe. He won his district with 57% of the vote back in 2008. Obama actually won his district 53% to 47% in North Carolina, in the Raleigh area. So politically, he should not lose his seat from this. However, at the end of the day, everyone agrees, it’s never a good idea to physically assault somebody who’s trying to videotape you, especially in the YouTube age. Chris. JANSING: Note to self. Thank you, Luke. RUSSERT: Yup.

Chris Matthews: Meg Whitman and Carly Fiorina Guilty of ‘Very Hard-right Talk’

With Americans heading to the polls in less than five months, the liberal media have once again adopted their typical strategy of depicting every Republican candidate as being a far-right extremist. Such was on display in this weekend’s syndicated “Chris Matthews Show” when the host began the second segment by saying, “This week’s primaries proved again that this anti-Washington year may usher in Republicans who owe a lot to the far-right.” Matthews then played a clip from his upcoming special “Rise of the New Right,” saying after its completion, “Well, Tea Parties have had some luck with conservatives who have beaten establishment Republicans this year. This past Tuesday night, for example, Nevada Republicans chose a Tea Party candidate to go against Harry Reid. And she’s not shy about her extreme views like killing Social Security and Medicare. After a brief clip of Sharron Angle speaking at a Nevada debate, Matthews said, “And even mainstream Republicans like Meg Whitman and Carly Fiorina who won nominations this week in California have bent to the right in reaction to pressure from the hard-right.” Matthews then showed a Whitman ad wherein she was talking tough about illegal immigration followed by a Fiorina commercial that had the nerve to use “that tried and true conservative line ‘The Democrats are soft on terrorism.'” The host then asked New York Magazine’s John Heilemann, “That’s very hard-right talk; is that the smart talk to win an election in California?” (video follows with more transcription of this discussion): JOHN HEILEMANN, NEW YORK MAGAZINE: Well, it’s not…It’s very clear in California in particular that this is a problem, and you see both sides of the problem. In the Fiorina race, Tom Campbell would have been the better candidate for the Republicans. MATTHEWS: To win. HEILEMANN: To win in, in, in November. Stop the tape. Whether or not Campbell has a better chance of beating Boxer than Fiorina does is quite speculative. After all, he got absolutely crushed by Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) in 2000 losing by over 2 million votes. He even lost his own district that year by 15 points! But even this is somewhat irrelevant, for the truly conservative candidate in last week’s Republican primary was the Tea Party’s favorite Chuck DeVore. Readers should recall former Alaska governor Sarah Palin taking A LOT of heat last month when she came out in support of Fiorina instead of DeVore. As such, Matthews and Heilemann trying to depict Fiorina as a far-right candidate here were way off base: MATTHEWS: Do they want to win or be right, I mean literally right? HEILEMANN: Well, the Republican primary, the Republican primary electorate seems to want to be right more than it wants to win. Nonsense. Republicans on Tuesday went with the person with the most money that they believe can beat Boxer. If they had wanted the most conservative candidate, they would have gone for DeVore. That is NOT even debatable: HEILEMANN: So you wind up then with Carly Fiorina saying stuff it’s not clear she really believes in order to win against a candidate who probably would have had a better chance. Based on what? Fiorina beat Campbell by 32 points! Unfortunately, Matthews didn’t challenge Heilemann’s ignorant display: HEILEMANN: Then you have Meg Whitman who an otherwise very attractive candidate with tons of money who’s on the fundamentally wrong side as history shows us in California of this immigration issue. These are two candidates who on the surface should be very attractive, very compelling, and they’re both so far off on the right they’re so stranded. Amazing. Like Fiorina, Whitman wasn’t the conservative candidate in her race. That was Steve Poizner, the Golden State’s Insurance Commissioner. Conservatives throughout California largely supported him including Rep. Tom McClintock who said in campaign ads: Steve Poizner is the only conservative candidate in this race and is serious about implementing real reform in Sacramento. I am convinced that Meg Whitman has nothing to offer other than Arnold Schwarzenegger’s third term. That is something California cannot afford. Taking this further, Whitman was John McCain’s national co-chair when he ran for president in 2008. As for her immigration position, Whitman was critical of Arizona’s SB 1070. For some reason neither Matthews nor Heilemann brought this up. In the end, now that the primary season is over, the goal of America’s media will be to make every Republican candidate around the country look far more conservative than they really are. Something they possibly haven’t considered is that in a year when liberal is likely a four-letter word, being branded as far-right might be a good thing. Hmmm.

Better Late Than Never: Rachel Maddow Taken to Task From Unlikely Quarter – The Huffington Post

It’s not often I see something on The Huffington Post I look forward to reading. Here’s an exception. In a post ungrammatically titled “Why Has the New York Times and Rachel Maddow Misled Us?”, novelist and essayist Richard Greener on Thursday wrote a stinging rebuke of a Times’ June 8 editorial and Maddow’s coverage on her show the following day of the Supreme Court emergency order intervening in Arizona’s political matching funds law. The specifics of Greener’s criticism of the Times and Maddow can be found by following this link to his post. (A video clip of the Maddow segment in question can be found here ). Greener laid it on thick when it came to Maddow, initially describing her as “always intelligent, smart and savvy and usually 100 percent credible” before going after her assertions about the court’s action. He concluded that “only two explanations remain for Rachel’s bad behavior” — One is, she’s just another TV entertainer, another pretty face in a long-line of million-dollar talking heads. She shows up, gets her make-up on and she performs her ‘show’ for the camera. Unsaid, is that she hasn’t a clue what the program’s about and perhaps doesn’t care very much. After all, it’s show business and it’s her living we’re talking about. It’s only ‘acting’ isn’t it? Second is she read the order. She knows perfectly well what it says. But she had a reason to do what she did, the way she did it. I don’t want to believe the first possibility. Don’t ask me why. I don’t know Rachel Maddow and I never will. But I kinda like her. I think she’s cool. And, I admit it — I usually agree with her. But I really don’t want to believe the second because its (sic) so fundamentally dishonest, deceptive and downright creepy that it makes me a little queasy. Greener deserves credit, as does The Huffington Post, for publishing this, knowing full well that many if not most of the readers on the site are also inclined to agree with Maddow. Where I part company with Greener is in his description of Maddow as “usually 100% percent credible.” Leaving aside the many examples on NewsBusters that undermine this claim, one need not venture far from the Maddow segment that Greener criticizes to see further evidence of this. The day before Maddow’s take on the Supreme Court action, Maddow interviewed Las Vegas Sun columnist and cable-show host Jon Ralston. The interview ended with a minor but telling error on Maddow’s part when she thanked Ralston for coming on her show ( click here for audio) — MADDOW: Jon Ralston, columnist for the Las Vegas Sun, host of ‘Face to Face with Jon Ralston,’ and as a political dean of the press corps in Nevada you’ve got one of the best jobs in American politics. … Except that Ralston works in journalism, not politics. Unless the person saying this sees no distinction between the two. What followed from Maddow on Wednesday and Thursday, however, was egregious. On Wednesday’s show, the same one featuring the segment criticized by Greener, Maddow revisited her verbal jousting with John Birchers at last winter’s CPAC gathering in her attempt to tar GOP Senate nominee Sharron Angle with guilt by association ( audio here ) — MADDOW:  Seeing the John Birch Society back in the heart of the conservative movement has been sort of a trip. I mean, once they got over the impulse to try to pretend that they are not now and never were crazy about stuff like fluoride, they then got right back into the business of being super-paranoid, highly-imaginative conspiracy theorists about stuff like fluoride. These guys really believe if we’re going to get serious about stopping communist mind-control plots, we must oppose the dreaded Bolshevik fluoride in the water. Here’s the most amazing thing, though. The John Birch Society now, in that view, has a very highly placed champion, the Republican candidate for Senate in Nevada, Sharron Angle — fighter against fluoride! Really! In 1999 the Nevada state assembly passed a bill requiring the fluoridation of water in two Nevada counties. Then-assemblywoman Sharron Angle tried to block fluoridation in one of those counties. According to an account in the Las Vegas Review-Journal, ‘Angle said she simply does not like fluoride.’ A day later, Maddow embellished on the basis for Angle’s opposition to fluoridation ( audio here ) — MADDOW:  Now that Sharron Angle has won the Republican nomination for Senate to run against Harry Reid in Nevada, now the fun part. Now the fun part is watching the national Republican political establishment try to figure out what to do with Sharron Angle. Try to figure out how to balance that national Republican frothing, clamoring, heart-racing desire to beat Harry Reid with the fact that their candidate against Harry Reid thinks that fluoride in drinking water is a conspiracy and recently suggested that beer should be illegal. Sow’s ear, can you become a silk purse? Can you?! To recap: Maddow on Wednesday — Angle’s opposition to fluoridation, according to the newspaper Maddow cited quoting Angle, is personal distaste. Maddow on Thursday claims as “fact” that Angle believes fluoridation is a “conspiracy” — as in Bolshevik. Sharing Angle’s concern, by the way, is that scurrilous right-wing rag Scientific American, which ran an article titled “Second Thoughts on Fluoride” in 2008. Guess they’re in on the conspiracy too. Maddow is “usually 100% percent credible”? Hardly. More like, slippery as an oil slick.

Olbermann Claims FNC ‘Says ‘Indefensible & Even Racist Things’ Like Helen Thomas

On Friday’s Countdown show, after having decided not to include Helen Thomas in his “Worst Person” segment for her anti-Semitic declaration that Jews should “get the hell out of Palestine” and “go home” to Germany and Poland, MSNBC host Keith Olbermann included Fox News Sunday anchor Chris Wallace in his “Worst Person” segment for suggesting that it would be “poetic justice” if Fox News were to be given her seat in the White House briefing room. Olbermann went on to claim that FNC personalities are guilty of making comments that are similarly racist as compared to Thomas’s attack on Israeli Jews: “Wallace thus implying that a far right entity that occasionally says indefensible and even racist things should replace a far left entity that occasionally said indefensible and even racist things.” On Wednesday’s Countdown show, Olbermann had similarly found a reason to include in his “Worst Person” segment the rabbi who exposed Thomas’s anti-Semitism, even though Thomas herself was never included in the segment. Below is a transcript of the relevant portion of the Friday, June 11, Countdown show on MSNBC: Runner up, Chris Wallace of Fox, saying his place, its own kind of get rich quick pitch, should get Helen Thomas`s front row seat in the White House press room. “This is actually kind of interesting because I think it would be the final sort of back payment for Helen Thomas if this were to happen because, obviously, she was very far to the left wing. And if her seat were to be taken by Fox News, it would be kind of poetic justice.” Wallace thus implying that a far right entity that occasionally says indefensible and even racist things should replace a far left entity that occasionally said indefensible and even racist things. When his implication was pointed out to him by a Fox interviewer, he said, “I just realized that`s probably not the way to go on this. We`re fair and balanced. That`s the point.” Chris, good luck with the rest of the toothpaste.
