REVIEW: Mind-Blowingly Charmless Katherine Heigl Will Rob You Blind in One for the Money

One for the Money feels like the forgotten pilot for a TV show that wasn’t picked up for series. Watch as Stephanie Plum ( Katherine Heigl ), Trenton divorcee-turned-bounty hunter, hunts down bail skippers in her high heels while trying to choose between troubled cop Joe Morelli (Jason O’Mara) and badass fellow bond agent Ranger (Daniel Sunjata) — Tuesdays on USA! Plum is the creation of author Janet Evanovich and the basis of a bestselling 18 novel franchise, and if you squint at this big screen adaptation (directed by Julie Anne Robinson, of  The Last Song and episodes of Weeds , Grey’s Anatomy,   2 Broke Girls and others) you can make out some of the character’s potential appeal — she’s an everywoman who discovers an unexpected talent for a tough gig, an outspoken Jersey girl who refuses to let the fact that she’s out of her comfort zone stop her from getting the job done, etc, etc. But as played by Heigl, Stephanie is mind-blowingly charmless, the latest variation of the on-screen persona the actress has mysteriously embraced — the prissy, once-wronged gal prone to bouts of inconveniently timed clumsiness and acrimonious banter with her eventual love interest. I don’t dislike Heigl on principle, but it’s all too easy to call out everything that’s gone wrong with the romantic comedy in recent years by way of her filmography. Her characters apparently need to be subjected to a journey of humiliating comeuppance in order to win over/come around to their unlikely loves — the rom-com as punishment fantasy. Here her hostile Romeo, Morelli (no one refers to him by his first name), is the roguish town heartbreaker who’s on the lam after having been charged with murdering Ziggy Kuleska, a local tough involved in some major criminal activity. For Stephanie, Morelli’s more serious offense is not calling her back after relieving her of her virginity in the back of a bakery when they were in high school, for which she still bears a grudge. ( One for the Money ‘s tendencies to see things like murder only as vexing complications in its protagonist’s personal life speaks both to its tonal confusion and to how minor the case around which it’s theoretically structured actually is to the film as a whole.) Stephanie will net $50,000 if she can bring the man in, though the first time she finds him she realizes she doesn’t actually have a way to do that unless he agrees to come with — and he insists he’s innocent. Heigl and O’Mara snipe at each other with the sizzling chemistry of two people who can’t wait to whip out their BlackBerries and check their email as soon as a take is over. The pair’s rictus pantomime of sexual tension is countered by Stephanie’s relationship with the hyper-competent and permanently Kevlar-clad Ranger, whom she describes as “Michelangelo’s David dipped in caramel,” and who serves as an alternate aloof romantic possibility as well as a tutor in the ways of bounty hunting. He’s more superhero and plot device than person, but he’s at least not burdened with the New Jersey accent Heigl and O’Mara gamely, unsuccessfully attempt. Stephanie is supposed to be earthy and sassy, not qualities Heigl is able to summon, but she’s also problematically written as somewhere between active if imperfect heroine and Bella Swan-style object in need of rescuing. She’s terrible at what she does, even for a beginner — a running gag about her having to rummage through her purse for her gun at urgent moments is enough to make you want to bang your forehead on the theater seat in front of you. She gets one person killed and another badly beaten, and she frequently places herself in danger, requiring the intervention of Morelli or Ranger. The tension between the allure of being saved and protected versus the desire to do things oneself is by far the most intriguing part of  One for the Money , because the film (which was written by Stacy Sherman, Karen Ray and Liz Brixius) has no idea how to balance the two and ends up instead making Stephanie seem like an indulged annoyance. One for the Money ‘s TV pilot air is furthered by the flat look of the film, and by characters who are introduced largely to have no other purpose, there to be given storylines in some (saints forbid) later installment. Annie Parisse is Mary Lou, the best friend Stephanie always calls for advice; Debbie Reynolds plays Stephanie’s loopy grandmother who shoots the roast the rest of the family is eating while fooling around with her granddaughters newly acquired pistol, because accidental domestic gun violence is always good for a laugh. Patrick Fischler is Vinnie, Stephanie’s sleazy cousin/boss, and Sherri Shepherd plays Lula, a brassy hooker who offers our aspiring bond agent information. John Leguizamo, Fisher Stevens and Leonardo Nam show up too. Hopefully the masses won’t, because there are 17 more of these books just waiting to be dragged, kicking and screaming and rummaging in their purses for their weapons, onto the big screen. Demi Moore Hospitalization Caps Rough Patch For Actress

Moore’s separation from Ashton Kutcher, thin appearance had fans concerned even before Tuesday health scare. By Jocelyn Vena Demi Moore Photo: FilmMagic Demi Moore made headlines on Tuesday when she was hospitalized for “exhaustion.” The news of the health scare may not have been too surprising to celebrity watchers who have been closely keeping an eye on the actress in the wake of her split from Ashton Kutcher. In 2011, Moore’s personal life became heavily scrutinized when “Two and a Half Men” star Kutcher faced allegations that he was cheating on Moore . The actress has been lying low of late — she appeared in several smaller films in the past year, including “Margin Call” and “Another Happy Day.” Last fall, shortly before she announced her split from Kutcher, Moore had many fans worried about her health after she appeared thinner than usual at several red-carpet appearances to promote “Margin Call.” But she kept up a brave face in the wake of all the rumors regarding her appearance and her marriage. Check out photos of Demi and Ashton from happier times. It all came to a head in November when Moore and Kutcher confirmed that they were separating. In a statement, Moore said, “It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I have decided to end my six-year marriage to Ashton. “As a woman, a mother and a wife there are certain values and vows that I hold sacred, and it is in this spirit that I have chosen to move forward with my life,” the statement continued. “This is a trying time for me and my family, and so I would ask for the same compassion and privacy that you would give to anyone going through a similar situation.” In the months since the announcement, Moore has kept a low profile, but in early January she was cast as feminist icon Gloria Steinem in the “Lovelace” biopic currently shooting in Los Angeles. Since her hospitalization, Moore has dropped out of “Lovelace.” Her next film release is “LOL,” starring Miley Cyrus and Ashley Greene, due out later this year. “I really loved the movie; I loved working with [Cyrus] and the director. They just put it on pause because they had another film they were focusing on. It’s a tough thing when you have a movie you’re looking forward to coming out,” she said of the flick. Lady Gaga’s Big 2012: A Psychic Weighs In

‘This tour is going to be really good for her,’ psychic Jesse Bravo says of Gaga’s planned 2012 BTW Ball. By MTV News Staff Lady Gaga Photo: Jason Kempin/ Getty Images As 2012 rolls along, Lady Gaga has already teased she has some big plans ahead. So MTV News decided to look to New York-based psychic Jesse Bravo to see what fate has in store for the pop superstar. Bravo recently rolled up to the MTV News offices and looked into his crystal ball. “Lady Gaga for 2012, it’s going to be sort of a slower year for her because she has her tour, which means she’s not putting out a lot of new material,” Bravo explained, despite Gaga’s tease that she is working on her follow-up to 2011’s Born This Way . “So for me, when I sort of looked up around there to see what was happening for her, I saw her sales sort of slow down because of new material. But she’s also building up this new momentum for running her base for this tour. This tour is going to be really good for her.” Gaga has already thought about the Born This Way Ball , tweeting over the holidays that she was pondering the things she wants to sell on tour. “Designing merch for the tour, when you see it you will die. #deathbyinexpensiveglamour ,” she wrote. Mother Monster is also famously known for her wild style, which Bravo said won’t disappoint in the next 12 months. “I believe her next big outfit is a cross between two things, and I was sort of stuck in between, like, where I should go with this because I saw two outfits, which means they can come in succession,” he said. “I don’t know which one is going to come first. But I will believe the one that I saw is this outfit, and I can’t really describe it, but it’s going to have lights embedded in it. So it’s going to be pretty bizarre. And then I saw another outfit and it’s like a body outfit, one that you spray-paint on, and I don’t know if it’s a stars-and-stripes theme, but I saw that there were stars and stripes in the right areas.” In addition to all the ups in her career, Gaga’s personal life will also prosper, according to Bravo, which means that she may get even more serious with her rumored beau and “You and I” co-star, “Vampire Diaries” actor Taylor Kinney. “Her personal life is going to stay stable for a while. The reason why is that on the outside she shows she’s a strong character — and for business she is — but on the inside she’s a mush. And so as a result, she needs to have her relationship in place, especially right now when she needs that support on going on something that’s so big,” he said. “Two years is a long, long time [to tour]. I don’t think that relationship is going … it’s not going out.” Just how serious might they get? Well, Gaga, believe it or not, is already pondering a family, according to Bravo. (Although she did note in a recent interview that the only family she is focused on is her new music .) “I also feel this need of having children. So I don’t know how this is going to play because we know she has a tour and she’s not going to stop the tour short to have a child,” Bravo predicted. “And I know that work is on her mind, but I know that [her spirit guide] Liberace is telling me about a child. And I know that in the back of her mind, she wants one. I think with her, it’s about scheduling … and I would say we’re looking somewhere at 2014-2015. That’s going to be her time.” What do you think about Jesse Bravo’s predictions for Lady Gaga? Tell us in the comments! Related Videos 2012 Psychic Predictions!

Kris Humphries Injuries Shoulder, Prognosis Troubling

Here’s some good news for Kris Humphries: the reality star/power forward won’t be getting booed in Boston tomorrow night. The bruising Nets starter sat out yesterday’s game against the Nets due to a sore shoulder, and coach Avery Johnson says an MRI is scheduled for Kim Kardashian’s ex, who won’t even accompany the team to Beantown this week. “Hopefully we’ll get some good news,” Johnson said. “It’s not looking good right now because he barely can move his shoulder, so again we’ll have to hope and pray it’s nothing serious.” Following a season-opening victory, New Jersey has dropped five straight. Humphries is averaging 12.4 points an 10 rebounds per game in the early going, hearing boos everywhere he goes on the road. Things aren’t much better in Kris’ personal life, as E! aired the Kourtney and Kim Take New York episode this week in which Humphries gets into trouble by questioning Jonathan Cheban’s sexual orientation .

Nicki Minaj Teases Twerkin’, Fried Chicken From Video Set

‘Barbz, shld i twerk in the stupid hoe vid???’ Minaj asks fans. By Jocelyn Vena Nicki Minaj Photo: Frank Micelotta/Getty Images If Nicki Minaj ‘s latest Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded track, “Stupid Hoe,” seems off-the-wall, her fans should probably expect the video to be as well. And given the hints that the fierce MC has dropped on Twitter, something zany is definitely in store. Over the course of the last few days, the singer has been keeping her Barbz and Kenz up-to-date on the video shoot, which will by all accounts feature multiple costume changes, multiple setups and even some fried chicken. “Next shot is in a bathing suit and [hairstylist] terrence got me eating fried chkn and carrot cake!” she tweeted, later adding, “gettin my nailz done. still shootin the vid. 2 more looks!!!!” The rapper later posted a photo of her manicure, which featured animal prints and rainbow colors. “Barbz, shld i twerk in the stupid hoe vid???” she asked. “but i 4got my twerkin moves … dang.” She may not end up twerkin’ in the video, but as of Wednesday, she still had some work to do on the clip, so it seems anything could make the final cut. “Stupid Hoe” will be the second video off of Minaj’s February 14 release. Earlier this month, she teased the clip for “Roman Reloaded,” the album’s lead single. “Well, [Roman] was there [in Moscow] secretly because [alter ego] Martha wanted him to go there, so they put him in this thing with monks and nuns; they were trying to rehabilitate him,” Minaj explained. “But I can’t tell exactly what happened, you’ll just see it in the video format, but let’s just say he got out of there.” Minaj added that the video for “Roman in Moscow” “will be shot real soon.” Those aren’t the only Minaj videos that fans are excited for. Her clip for Madonna’s lead single, “Gimme All Your Luvin,” had everyone buzzing when she tweeted about a kiss she shared with the Queen of Pop. While little is known about that video, a behind-the-scenes photo of Nicki donning red sunglasses and hanging out with M.I.A. on set hit the Web late Tuesday night. Related Artists Nicki Minaj
